lack cats are a prominent symbol of Halloween and have long been associated with evil superstitions. We’ve all heard the old wives tale: “It’s a bad omen to have a black cat cross your path.” But where does this negativity towards black felines stem from? The story dates back to the Middle Ages, a time in European history when witchcraft was greatly feared. During this time period, those (mostly women) believed to be witches were tortured and even burned alive. Many people of this time also believed that these witches used small animals to cast their spells. According to the History Channel, “The idea of the witch as the embodiment of evil was so powerful that even animals associated with witches took on demonic reputations. The black cats we decorate Halloween with today came from a belief that the cat — nocturnal by nature — was a witch’s spirit but in animal form.” In celebration of Halloween, Latest 7 implore you to adopt a black cat, we’ve found the perfect moggy for you! Meet Tucan, she is a very sweet, placid female aged 12. This lovely old girl will need a quiet, adult only home with no other pets and a
HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS > How to keep your pets safe 1. Stash the treats: The sweetie bowl is for trickortreaters, not Scruffy or Fluffy. Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate in all forms – especially dark or baking chocolate – can be very dangerous for cats and dogs. 2. Watch the decorations and keep wires out of reach: While a carved pumpkin certainly is festive, pets can easily knock it over and start a fire. Curious kittens are especially at risk of getting burned or singed by candle flame. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered relatively nontoxic, but can produce stomach discomfort in pets who nibble on them. 3. Be careful with costumes: For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. The ASPCA recommends that you don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it. 4. Keep pets calm: Halloween brings a flurry of activity with visitors arriving at the door, and too many strangers can often be scary and stressful for pets. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept away from the door during peak trick ortreating hours.

L A DY C H AT T E R L E Y ’ S LOVER > Actress Hedydd Dylan, who plays Lady Chatterley in Theatre Royal Brighton’s upcoming show, talks about the production Tell us about Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It’s primarily a love story set during the aftermath of the First World War against a backdrop of social unrest. Communities are trying to recover from the trauma of war. Working men are revolting against the wealthy, because the camaraderie that they enjoyed during the war is over and capitalism is dividing people again. It’s a theme that’s still relevant – the disparity of wealth in society and the tension that causes. Lady Chatterley’s husband was injured in the war. He’s in a wheelchair and they can’t have a child together. She’s more of a carer to her husband than a wife. She’s struggling with depression, feeling numb to the world, but she finds a way back to herself through a love affair with a game keeper called Mellors. Phillip Breen, the director, has done a lovely job of projecting her emotional change through the changing of the seasons. What attracted you to the role of Lady Chatterley? As an actor you’re incredibly privileged if you’re able to play a character who hardly leaves the stage. You can build a character very gradually. It’s wonderful when an audience shares the journey with you and watch your character change throughout the play. It’s also quite a strongly feminist point of view. We’ve been very careful not to objectify Lady Chatterley in this presentation. Not to make her sexy or pornographic in the typical sense. She’s just a human being with a right to physical pleasure. I love that. And I enjoy that the nudity in our production is very innocent.

strongly feminist point of view ”

Do you think the immediacy of theatre makes the depiction of sex on stage different to sex in literature or on screen? Absolutely. Perhaps it’s because you’re never alone in a theatre and you worry about how people will judge your reaction. We do occasionally get some nervous giggles from the audience the first time the lovers undress in front of each other – which, incidentally, is not the first time they have sex. The characters are shy about their nudity and it’s nice that the audience are also slightly shy. D. H. Lawrence hoped that tenderness could build a better world after the war. Do you think that message still applies today? A sense of masculinity is still encouraged in young boys. Phrases like ‘don’t be a wuss’ and ‘man up’ teach men that it is shameful to be emotional. Shameful to cry. I think it’s no coincidence that more men under the age of 25 commit suicide than die in car accidents. D.H. Lawrence recognised that men should be allowed to be soft and there’s still progress to be made. This production marks the centenary of the Somme. Was that timing deliberate? Certainly. It’s important to remember people who sacrificed their lives – on both sides – but it’s also important to remember those who survived but lived on with the consequences of the war. There’s more to remembering the War than just remembering the fighting.

> Kitchen supplies
W
hen I first moved out on my own, I determined that I wanted to have a kitchen like my mother’s. It wasn’t that it was big – in fact it was downright tiny – but that everything that I might need, should I want to follow a recipe, would already be there.
“ I had a tub of readymade
breadcrumbs and three tins of ‘stuff’ ” Student halls inevitably disappointed, despite my approach of buying random ingredients in the hope that I’d end up with a store of staples. I had a tub of readymade breadcrumbs and three tins of ‘stuff’, bought in a whirlwind of hope and ambition. I accidentally stockpiled milk and butter and random kinds of flour, with the knowledge that my mother always had these things in the house. I didn’t really think too much about how much they might be used. And by the end of term the weevils had claimed them. Now I live in my own flat and have my own tiny kitchen, and I finally have the staples. It would seem that this kind of a kitchen storing only grows organically. I didn’t want to leave the house to go to the shops the other night and so found an old tin of soup for my supper. I just knew that there would be one there, right at the back of the cupboard, by the law of a permanent kitchen. Whilst having a rummage I even surprised myself by finding a bar of Kendal mint cake right at the back too. Clearly all of my rhetoric about zombie apocalypse supplies registered somewhere in my supermarketbrain, for that to have arrived and found a space. So finally, I have stores. I have flour – that I use, I have sugar, tins of soup, even a selection of herbs and spices, emergency orange squash, and various Oxo cubes. Only a home’s kitchen is supplied so well, it seems. There’s no place like home. 8 | LATEST 7
> The photographs that destroyed photography
P
hotographs dominate our lives. We snap away willy nilly with our phones and posting them on social networks with the same abandon. I'm not against this, it can be lovely to see what friends are doing, families, their exploits… but is this photography? Well not the art form that I had come to love. In a career spanning 40 years I have been privileged to work with a great many photographers, exciting new talents and those who had already attained the respect due from years of brilliant work. I still see brilliant work, here in Brighton I see the work of Julia Claxton, an artist with a camera who can also turn her lens to great commercial work, and JJ Waller, who has a razor sharp eye and creates impressively exciting human images. I love their work. This might sound dismissive, I do see great images online, some well crafted, but I suspect that on the whole they are happy accidents, being in the right place at the right time with your phone. And yes, I take phone pics and share them. It is a very seductive form of image making I agree. I recently spent time with my mum looking at old family photographs. To be honest the images are pretty poor but what they have is heart, they were taken on special occasions and with due thought because taking a photograph actually cost quite a lot of money. Back then we didn't snap away in the hope that we might get a good shot. We took our time, rationed our film and then had to wait to see what we had captured. We invested in those images in a way that we do not in phone pics and selfies. I don't want to sound like I'm the picture police prosecutor, far from it but I do want to suggest that we look harder at how we use our phones to record modern life and what we choose to record. There have been some amazing exhibitions of photography across our city in October, the camera making art and not just keeping track of our daily life.

MARK THOMAS > Activist, comedian, journalist, writer, and much more – Mark Thomas has many strings to his bow and it just keeps getting more tuneful. He talks with Victoria Nangle about The Red Shed Hi Mark, how are you today? I am currently in the tour van heading to Nottingham so I am slightly crumpled, in need of coffee and wondering if I really did see a “Baby on board” sticker on the back of an Eddie Stobart truck. The Red Shed is the latest in your theatrical trilogy. Whereas Bravo Figaro was familial, and Cuckooed about a betrayal, would it be fair to say that The Red Shed digs to bare the twining of your emotional and political roots? Yes, it would. The Red Shed is a wooden socialist shed in Wakefield and it was the

McThomas thing… we could do that ”
place where I came of age politically as a student involved with the miners strike. So this story is about the mining communities and the left, Labour, and what happened to those communities the Labour leadership decided to ignore. AND it is about personal and class history. It is also f***ing great and very funny. You keep an inspiring fire in your belly as an activist. What keeps your fires stoked? I think it is a mix of belligerence and utter
incomprehension that the rest of the world doesn’t know that I am right. The Red Shed is a labour club. Do you feel the gap between the labour clubs and the Labour Party may change with the last 12 months’ activities within the party and in a wider Brexit landscape? I think the gulf between the membership and the PLP is the thing to watch here. What did you enjoy most in the writing and gathering of stories to make The Red Shed? Hanging out with friends and comrades and talking to people I was on nodding terms with and finding out their amazing stories. Everyone in the club has done something remarkable. The chap who collects pots and always turns up to help move chairs sat and told me about his involvement in the 1972 builders’ strike. Amazing. And silly of me not to expect this to be the case. With your movement into a theatre/stand up crossover, would you ever write something for the stage that took yourself out of the equation as a performer? A PLAY?!?! I have written a short play for Theatre Uncut which ended up being performed at the Young Vic! I just sat in the audience thinking “**** I wrote this while waiting for a beef stew to cook”.
LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Also there is nothing that reveals your own failings as a writer than someone else trying to make the words work. Perhaps franchise out the successful Manifesto gathering of new policies? A sort of McThomas thing… we could do that. But I promise you it always takes more work than you imagine. Conversely, would you ever step onto the stage solely as a performer of someone else’s words, as other comedians have done in recent times? ACTING?!?!?!?! Yes, if it was fun and interesting and the person I was working with knew what they were doing.
But I have to say casting agents have not been beating a path to my door, possibly because I can never keep to the script I write let alone one someone else has. If everyone did one small thing every day to help make the world better, what do you think that should be? Throw away their car keys. If everyone did one small thing to make the world sillier what do you think that should be? Talk like Mark E Smith at breakfast time. > Fatto a Mano
I
t might seem odd, unlikely even, unbelievable perhaps but I do not have a massive appetite. Much as I love food, and I know, my size is evidence of this undeniable fact, I am not a big eater, or at least not in one sitting. Far better to describe me as a frequent eater. Yes, I like that and I would like to get frequent eater points, can anyone organise this? Why bring this up, well a week ago I was invited to try a new pizza joint in Hove. Fatto a Mano is a bright tiled restaurant with a huge domed and tiled woodfired pizza oven at its heart. I like pizza yes and I really like pizzas from wood fired ovens. Much as I like them I find it hard to finish one, for me they are so often just too big. I like nothing better though than sharing one with a friend and having a platter of antipasto to share too. In fact a kiddy portion would suit me fine. Fortunately the Fatto a Mano menu had some very tempting options for my unusually dainty appetite, an appetite you will soon realise is not as dainty as I might be claiming. I was joined by Mr S, a seasoned pizza fan, in fact pizza is his staple diet so an ideal accomplice on this venture. Mr S has a massive appetite I was soon to discover when he ordered their fries – as a starter! It was a huge mountain of nicely seasoned chipped potatoes, not particularly Italian but it put a wide smaller on his face, as did the beers that we had ordered to accompany our meal. I took a look at both the house menu and their October Best menu at 20 which had plenty of great treats on it and one in particular that caught my eye. On the main menu I spotted an old favourite, melanzane parmigiana, aubergine, tomato, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. So there I had it, the perfect combo of two starters.
We were sat at the counter facing the oven and watching the traditional country dance that is three pizza chefs at work, fine choreography and plenty of dough swirling to behold. Suddenly I realised that the enormous dish being prepared before my very eyes was the tronchetto, the very starter that had caught my eye with its promise of Brighton blue cheese wrapped in parma ham. What I had not realised was that the cheese was encased in a roll of pizza dough. Ah well I thought, as the chef loaded the plate with rocket salad, at least the salad will be light. It was delicious, a real treat, and I ignored my appetite and scoffed the lot. I certainly hope that they put this own their main menu very soon. Mr S, after having the difference between a white pizza and a red pizza explained to him, no tomato sauce on the white, chose the Capricciosa – tomato, ham, mushroom, artichokes, olives, salami, basil, mozzarella – yes all of that! Very good it looked too, and he made a fairly good job of demolishing it, leaving only some of the crisp crust, usually my favourite part. My melanzane was great and plenty big enough to be honest, especially after the larger than expected first course. Mr S finished with icecream, I had affogato, a good one, especially couple with a shot of amaretto. I really enjoyed my meal and the company, the service is good, friendly and relaxed but very efficient and I would certainly go back and have that melanzane again, and the tronchetto if it makes it to the menu. Price wise it is pretty impressive too with pizzas starting at a modest 6.50 and rising to an equally modest 9. 6567 Church Road, Hove BN3 2BD 01273 325400 www.fattoamanopizza.com

I saw you play Love Supreme Festival in July. How was that? It was good. I felt we were very well received, a nice crowd.
I
Tell me about the album... Initially we thought we were going to make an acoustic album. As the songs grew and Ross developed them, we thought the songs would sound great with drums. When we play live it’s a lot more guitarheavy, we speed up the tempos more, and the drums are live rather than programmed. So we thought, why don’t we capture what we do live on the record. You’ve got another child, a oneyearolddaughter. Did she play a part in the recording!? I was heavily pregnant at the time when we wrote the first song 'Clear My Mind'. My daughter came three months early. That was a very frightening experience. A week before she came I was on stage in my sixinch heels and sparkly trousers. The song ‘Hold On’ is inspired by that. She is child number four… My son (Jaega) is on drums with us. He’s 20. I was pregnant with him when we recorded the Who Can You Trust album (Morcheeba’s debut). All of the children have been on tour with us, travelled with us up to school age. When we came to needing a new drummer Ross suggested Jaega. I was 18 when I first started in Morcheeba, so we thought we'd give him a chance. Taking to it like his Mum? His first gig was in Argentina in front of 1,000 people, and he killed it. He’s a natural. 'm a big fan of podcasts, and would heartily recommend shows such as The Russell Brand Show (6 Music era innocence in particular), Professor Blastoff, Kermode & Mayo's Film Review and International Waters. The Football Ramble is a little more niche, chiefly concerning football and all, but it's worth a listen for anyone who might think football commentary is just for the shouty or misogynist types.
“ Football commentary isn’t just for the shouty or the misogynist ” The Football Ramble is Marcus Speller, Jim Campbell, Luke Moore and Pete Donaldson, who release their main weekly show every Tuesday, as well as a shorter Premier League preview show. Although the main show heavily focuses on the Premier League, it is notable for also discussing the wider football world in general. It can be a nice way to hear about football news in fact, through the prism of four knowledgeable and funny presenters. I don't know what the Ramblers' views are on the term banter but the word is tainted now, by the type of scoundrels who use it as an excuse for derogatory comments. The Ramblers’ teasing of each other's views and team loyalties feels friendly however, and their reactions to news stories reflective rather than reactionary. The live show should be good fun if it can recreate half of the jovial atmosphere of the podcast, and there will be a chance to purchase a signed copy of their new book for a discounted price with your ticket too. COMEDY
VICTORIA NANGLE > Style council
D
iversity has always been a buzz word in comedy – and not just as quotas on panel shows. The great thing about going out for a laugh is that there are so many different styles in which the aforementioned laugh can be served up. This week’s picks are a prime example of just that. Gary Delaney is a very clever jokewriter. Puns are his stock in trade, oneliners his bread and butter, and such is his talent with the form that he can machinegun them out without a single joke lost in the crowd. Delaney is a classicist, with a modern talent. Laura Lexx went viral earlier this year when she put a sexist punter in his place whilst MCing at Komedia and it was caught on camera. This is the hourlong show she took to Edinburgh this year that the critics loved, covering marriage, feminism and the folks that
made Stonehenge. A bit of politics, some great stories, and plenty of funnies. And the internationallyacclaimed whimsical, surreal, propassisted comedy of Jason Byrne is in town too. Pick a comedic style to suit your mood and batter those autumn chills. Gary Delaney: There’s Something About Gary, Wednesday 2 November, Komedia, 8pm, £14; Laura Lexx: Tyrannosaurus Lexx, Monday 7 November, Caroline Of Brunswick, 7.45pm, £5/3; Jason Byrne: Propped Up, Friday 4 November, The Old Market, 8pm, £17.50 Laura Lexx

pologies if I gush. But sculptor Eve Shepherd really is supremely talented. And if you don’t head to Corridor Gallery for her incredible solo exhibition ‘Blood & Bone’, you will be missing something very special. In this mesmerising new show, Eve explores the journey of femininity, shaped and inspired by her own experiences as an artist and mother. For the first time in her working practice, she pulls together a singular theme that captures fragility and fortitude through feminine archetypes of maiden, mother and crone – interrogating the strength of women from the primordial ancestry of our beginnings to the complex femininity of modern day. Haunting and ethereal, while remaining fleshy and visceral. Until 4 December. www.artymagazines.com LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

> Kennedy St's TV debut of ‘Recovery St’, produced by Coronations Street’s Curly Watts
B
righton based Kennedy St & Co are launching ‘Recovery St’, the not for profit’s first documentary. It will be broadcast on Latest TV on 6th November at 9pm, with further opportunities to catch it every week during November and December. This Big Lottery funded project brought together a group of budding film makers with a shared desire to produce a film about their own recovery journey. Kevin Kennedy (known for his iconic role as Curly Watts on Coronation Street and 18 years sober himself), led the filmmaking course with his recovery coach wife Clare. Identifying a need for the work Clare does in the Brighton community, the couple recently launched Kennedy St & Co, a Community Interest Company. In a short space of time, Kennedy St has established a popup ‘Dry Bar’, currently running once a week, as an alternative, substance free social space; a coaching; mentoring academy; and various multimedia productions projects. The social enterprise is looking for investment, funding and sponsorship options so they can continue to offer volunteering, social entrepreneur coaching & self employment opportunities to people, engaging in active recovery from a variety of health issues. Their key aims are to provide peerled support & coaching, education, workplacements, retraining, informal access to information, as well as a range of other courses, workshops, social entrepreneurialism opportunities and visual recovery to wellness activities and events.

J
osh Dillon only started doing standup comedy three years ago, but has certainly been making his mark on the comedy scene with his dark, deadpan humour. I've gigged with the Brighton local quite a lot on the circuit and recently I thought I'd find out more about Josh's career and how he got into comedy. What made you start doing standup comedy? Well, I wanted to be a comedian when I was 18 or 19, but it didn't happen. Then years later I had a drunken rant one night to my wife, saying I wish I'd been a comedian. So my wife surprised me by booking me on a comedy course in Brighton. I tried to get out of it and said I wasn't being serious, but I loved it and realised I should have done it years ago!
“ I struggle to write jokes that aren’t dark ”
What are your stand up highlights of 2016? Performing at Brighton Fringe this year. I did a show with Cally Beaton and it was a sellout so that was fantastic. Also I loved playing the Komedia. That's a great venue. You describe your style of comedy as dark and deadpan. who influenced you? I adored Jack Dee, but I think my style is darker than his. I'm not sure where the darkness comes from. I struggle to write jokes that aren't dark. I don't know what's wrong with me! Maybe it's growing up on council estates and having been a probation officer for 15 years!

SATURDAY 5 Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 6.55pm As much as it’s prime Saturday night telly fare, there really is a core of feelgood feeling at the heart of this show. Whether it’s Ore’s incredible jive a couple of weeks’ back, or Claudia and AJ’s speedy speedy turns, it warms the cockles and is surprisingly addictive. Makes you want to go out and waltz the night away.
The X Factor ITV1, 8pm So, by this time we’ve got a pretty good idea as to who will be on next year’s live tour stage. We know who the judges don’t like... they love. And how sweet it is to have an X Factor couple in the house (fingers crossed they’re both still in there). Now all that’s left is to enjoy the music, watch the judges snipe, and vote.
Scorpion ITV2, 8.45pm The team are used to saving the rest of the world – it’s old hat. This time they’ve got to save one of their own, because as clever as they are, they’re not always that savvy. Which is why it will come as no surprise that Walter has accidentally launched himself into space and is running out of oxygen. Dude.

SUNDAY 6 Planet Earth II BBC2, 8pm It really is autumn when the evenings draw in and Sunday nights are warmed with the comfort of a fresh stunningly shot David Attenborough nature documentary. Feast your eyes on the rare pygmy threetoed sloth, young marine iguana escaping racer snakes, and an avalanche of penguins. Beautiful.
Humans Channel 4, 9pm If humans are co-existing with humanoids known as ‘Synths’, it’s probably a bit dodgy when Karen and Pete learn about a special Synth being sold on the black market for a big massive heapload of moolah. Yikes. Meanwhile, Hester is being less than ethical when she tries to get information out of her prisoner.
Storyville: Weiner – Sexts, Scandals And Politics BBC4, 9pm It’s a cautionary tale usually told to teens, the dangers of sexting. Not one that you would normally associate with an American politician, but the unfortunately named Anthony Weiner found his texting scandal not only led to a Congressional resignation but a blighted mayoral bid too.
