CAT TALES > Twinkle, twinkle, little star
I
n this week’s Cat Tales, Latest TV’s channel manager, Erik Selby, shares his story about his landlady’s cat Twinkle... “Hello world, meet Twinkle. For those of you that are lucky enough to follow me on Twitter and Instagram, or have the joy of being my friend on Facebook, will I’m sure be fully aware of my love for cats! “OK, so Twinkle isn’t technically my cat; she is my landlady's adorable, dainty, youthful looking, old cat. A black and white, who can only be described as beautiful. “Twinkle struts around the house demanding attention, often mistaken for wanting food, head butting you until you give in to the kitty hypnosis techniques and let her moult her jet black fur all over your lovely clean cream bed sheets! “Let’s talk about photos: I’ve always taken snaps of pawed pussies, and Twinkle is no exception, there’s just one thing… she is a natural born poser! When I take photos of her, stood up like a majestic queen who owns the kitchen table, she knows what I’m doing. Twinkle realises that the slim black device I shove in front of her face is none other than a social ‘like’ grabbing moment capturer, that will draw friends to her home, ultimately bringing her even more food and attention!”
ONLY IN BRIGHTON > The Disco Bunny strikes again!
J
ames Mortimer sent us his Only In Brighton moment: “I had the absolute privilege to spend a few hours with the The Disco Bunny. What an absolute legend he is and SUCH a nice guy. We spoke about his philosophy on life and how he likes to help people and give out love, which to be honest if we all did, the world would be a much better place. “While we were chatting I noticed he had holes in his trainers from dancing so much… so I took him to get some new ones which totally made my day, obviously he had to do a handstand on North Street to show them off in true Disco Bunny style!” LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

> The wildly successful epic tale of Liverpool life visits Theatre Royal Brighton
T
he international smash hit musical Blood Brothers comes to Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 28 November to Saturday 3 December. An additional matinee has been added on Wednesday to meet exceptionally high demand for tickets. Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she first played in 1997. Lyn played Mrs Johnstone in the final West End performances at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012.
“ One of only three musicals ever to exceed 10,000 performances ” Lyn rose to fame in the early 1970s as a member of the New Seekers. She was the featured vocalist on their 1972 Eurovision Song Contest entry, Beg, Steal or Borrow, in which they came second and lead vocalist on the 1974 number one hit You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me. Among the group’s other works, they recorded the song I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing, adapted from an advertising jingle for Coca Cola, which sold over 20 million copies and still remains one of the 100 best selling singles in the UK. Hailed as one of the best musicals of all time, Blood Brothers, written by awardwinning playwright Willy Russell has triumphed across the globe. Scooping up no fewer than four awards for best musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway, Blood Brothers is simply LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
unmissable and unbeatable. This epic tale of Liverpool life ran in London’s West End for 24 years and exceeded 10,000 performances. It is one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax. A sensational cast, incredible show stopping music, remarkable staging and five star performances make Blood Brothers an enthralling night of entertainment. Willy Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita, originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two year run in the West End and was made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters.

> Don’t keep it under your hat
I
t’s that time of year again. When we start arguing about whether it’s cold enough to put the heating on yet – or if, just because it was cold enough yesterday, does that mean it’s cold enough today? Autumn clothes are coming out, hats are for keeping you warm not just for stopping the sun getting in your eyes, and going out in the evening means definitely wearing a coat. It’s getting chilly. Which means it’s getting even chillier for those on living on the streets. We’ve always had a prominent residency on the pavements of Brighton, and a few years ago I decided to start knitting bobble hats and giving them out to people huddled in doorways. My reasoning was that if you’re homeless something that’s a rarity is frivolity, the unnecessary, and a pom pom on the top of your head is just that. And it’s dang cold, so the attached hat might be a good thing to receive.
“ If you’re homeless something that’s a rarity is frivolity ” Last year funds were a bit tight for me so I started doing Hats For The Homeless, whenever I had a stall at a craft fair selling my other knitted wares. It’s an arrangement where you can buy a hat for yourself for the regular price, or you can pay the price of the wool alone (cheaper!) and choose a hat to go into a bag that I then deliver to a local homeless charity (Project Antifreeze, www.offthefence.org.uk/antifreeze). It worked pretty well and about two thirds of my hats went to the charity – with lots of different colours to choose from. This year my friend is helping me make even more Hats For The Homeless, and we’re hoping every hat on the street will be warm and bobbleattired by Christmas. Stay warm. Hats For The Homeless will be on sale at on Sunday 27 November at the Christmas Gift Fair in Exeter Street Hall, and Thursday 8 Saturday 10 December at New England House Open Studios LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
> Man flu
I
've not got it, far from it and yes I do know the difference. Once you have had influenza proper you know that everything else is just a cold. And boy have I had a cold, a wheezing sneezing snotty monster of a cold that has been with me now for a few weeks and is showing no signs of abating. The funny, or not so funny, thing about this cold is that rather than feeling unwell I simply feel inconvenienced. The sneezing and wheezing is a bore, it doesn't hurt and I have not had a bad head really, or a fever. But going out feeling like this is not pleasant for me or for my friends. Coughing fits are a nightmare at the theatre and in restaurants so that has made my usual social life somewhat depleted. I have been out but I'm not on top form and if I am honest I am enjoying staying home. It's certainly preferable being accused of having "man flu" by female friends and I am sorry to say that those accusations are nearly always made by women. I take it in good heart most of the time, I'm sure you don't really mean to dismiss all men who complain of feeling a little under the weather of being malingerers. Surely not! Of course women are not solely to blame, there are men out there who only need to handle a packet of tissues to declare that they have flu. Come on boys, you're letting the side down. But how do we know? Doctor’s surgeries are happy to suggest that a cold can be cured at home and does not require the attentions of your GP, but at what point do I seek medical attention? I'm not keen on taking antibiotics but after two weeks do I need them? So far I have been medicating with vitamin C, fruit juice, paracetamol and Appleton's rum, the rum helps me sleep through the coughing fits, well that's my excuse. I do not have flu and I do not have man flu, I have a cold that's all so leave me alone – or I'll give it to you!

JOSH WIDDICOMBE > Sitcom star, popular panellist, and acclaimed standup comedian – Josh Widdicombe brings his latest considerations on the world to the Brighton Dome
J
osh Widdicombe has a flourishing TV career. He copresents the award winning C4 programme, The Last Leg, one of the most popular comedy shows on television. He has also made memorable appearances on Mock the Week, QI, Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You and The Jonathan Ross Show. In addition, he has written and starred his own sitcom, ‘JOSH’, which was broadcast on BBC3 last year, and returns for a highly anticipated second series this autumn. Josh begins by underscoring how delighted he is to be
hours driving to tonight's venue, your day is prescribed. You think, 'This is going to happen'. So you just sit there and chat because you can't do anything else. It's actually very stressfree." So what subjects will Josh be addressing in ‘What Do I Do Now...’? "As a standup, you naturally talk about what's interesting you, so I'll be discussing what's annoying me right now. "But I'll also be doing a lot about growing up in Devon in the 1990s. At my primary school, there were only four children in my year. It was a very different
“ The fact that The Last Leg goes out live helps – that gives it a real energy. ” returning to the live comedy arena after a sustained period locked away in various TV studios. "I love standup," he beams. "I think of myself as a standup. It's not like a proper job, but it's what I do. Other things just happen to me, and they have all come out of my standup. It's good to remind myself why I ended up getting my own sitcom." Josh adds that he relishes the whole process of touring. "I really like the lifestyle, and I really like travelling around the UK. It's a very pleasant way to see the country. It's really interesting to see where people come from and then talk to them about those places. "It's also quite a meditative way to spend your time. When you know you're going to be in a car for the next four
experience from a lot of other people's. So I'll be doing some comparing and contrasting with how I live now." During the tour, BBC3 will be transmitting the second series of Josh's sitcom. The comedian explains that, "The main character is called Josh and it's based on me five years ago. It's me when I wasn't as successful and was living in a shared house. It's about the trials and tribulations of that. "The sitcom Josh is not a success. He's single and frustrated with his life. He's a character who's trapped – that's what all sitcoms boil down to. I don't want to watch anyone else being successful, and I don't want to put viewers through that, either!" The comedian is also
continuing with his other major TV project, The Last Leg, the muchloved topical comedy show which Josh co presents with Adam Hills and Alex Brooker. Josh attempts to put his finger on why The Last Leg, which has grown in popularity since its initial short run during the London 2012 Paralympic Games, is so widely adored. "Why has it struck such a chord? It's a total fluke rather than a grand plan! We didn't plot a good way of making the show – we just stumbled across it! "The chemistry between the three of us is obviously key. You can theorise as long as you want about why we click, but the truth is that some groups just work really well together & some don't. “The fact that The Last Leg goes out live helps – that gives it a real energy. Also, for the last ten years, a lot of TV panel shows have looked the same, but The Last Leg feels very different." Finally, Josh would like to convey a reassuring message to the people. "I don't draw any conclusions in this show. You won't learn anything about me or yourself. But hopefully it'll be really funny. That's
the primary aim." And it's one that Josh achieves quite brilliantly.

s this the thin end of the wedge? Will they be letting girls read the news next? Are Rodger and Wilco safe? Can Jock return Daphne’s jewels and save her reputation? Some, if not all, of these questions will be answered in the next exciting instalment of – Dick Barton, Special Agent” Dick Barton, hero of the BBC’s acclaimed 1940s wireless serial, is brought back to life in this, the third of Phil Willmott’s critically acclaimed and hugely successful series of musical comedies. A ruthless Latin lothario has set his sights on the women of London. No gal is safe from his sultry seductions. Thank heavens that square jawed British hero, Barton, is on hand to save the dignity and diamonds of our dowagers and debutantes. But will the fancy footwork of this foreign fiend and the dreaded EFIL (Evil Foreigners in London) defeat Dick and his pals Jock and Snowy. This joyful Christmas production promises to be a bit of a romp. It will be staged in the style of a 1940s Radio play; with the actors broadcasting as if from a BBC studio, but will also include lots of singing and dancing. he idea of this Dickens being condensed to an evening of theatre breeds a fear that it would be crudely filleted – but this was far from the truth. The heart of the novel is delivered with style and dramatic skill that stretches from the talented cast and direction to the brilliant setting, costumes, lighting and soundscape. The entire evening was gripping, moving and at times truly scary, there was a tangible sense of fear that had the audience rapt. Full marks to the company who convincingly play multiple roles without ever being confusing. Great performances all round but a particular mention for Joseph Timms whose portrayal of Sydney Carton was captivatingly sleazy and finally deeply moving. > Crystal Fighters
T
he core of London based internationalists Crystal Fighters is made up of singer Sebastian ‘Bast’ Pringle, guitar and txalaparta player Graham Dickson and multiinstrumentalist Gilbert Vierich. Following a gruelling tour schedule that followed the release of their second album, ‘Cave Rave’, they all took some much needed time out: to travel, find inspiration, and live life outside the bubble of being in a band. And it’s reflected in their new album, ‘Everything Is My Family’. “We travelled a lot more, writing for the album,” says Sebastian ‘Bast’ Pringle. “We took time off when we could, to go on longer trips. I spent some time researching and living in the jungles of Central America. Graham went to Peru, and various different places in Europe to write. It was more concentrated, and being alone a long time, writing to get the initial ideas. We spent a lot of time together on the road, and we felt we needed some time to experience life a bit, separate from the band, and then come back and record together. Last time it was quite a concentrated experience writing together. “I lived in the Basque country, for six months, and then went to Central America for six months. We lived in tents or little huts, sitting around a camp fire, writing songs, and learning traditional songs from many cultures, which was a new approach for me. Normally I would be making beats on computers and adding little riffs. This was more about learning this body of work I had never heard before; Bolivian folk songs, Brazilian music, African songs...” Despite theses newfound inspirations, Crystal Fighters music is a bit less folk, and more electronic and upbeat than ever, although the folk, and in particular, Basque influences, remain an integral part of their sound, a global and genremashing spirit that defines their music and philosophical outlooks. > Two gig picks: melodic posthardcore and sex & cross dressing in subversive opera
O
ne exciting thing when listening to the brilliant ‘Imposter’ on IT IT ANITA’s Bandcamp page is that it sounds like Touché Amoré, who put on one of the best rock gigs that I’ve ever seen in Brighton There are more dirgy, noisier elements too, taking clear cues from Sonic Youth and Pavement.
“ Alcina bewitches young men with magic mushrooms ” The Belgian band played The Great Escape last year, plonking their drumkit in the middle of the crowd and the noisy and ferocious set was one of the most memorable of the weekend. ‘L'Invention Du Chien’ is a more feedbackfocused drone song reminiscent of Boris with a poppier vocal not a million miles away from Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. We can therefore expect a gig with multiple moods and tones to keep the atmosphere fresh and invigorating. Later next week we have a psychedelic reimagining of Handel’s opera Alcina, translated into English. I saw Glyndebourne’s stunning Saul production last year and can’t wait to hear the evermelodic Handel performed live by the exciting Brighton based opera company Opera Alumnus. Saskia WesnigkWood is directing this production, set in Mexico, 1965, which sees Alcina bewitch young men with magic mushrooms. The men are fleeing being drafted into the Vietnam War and witchwoman Alcina gets into some romantic scrapes that I won’t spoil here. I’m hugely excited by this production: regular readers will know I love anything that tries to bridge the pop/classical divide, and sex and drugs might do the trick. Regardless, Handel’s music is always beautiful, and the tickets are astonishingly cheap to boot. COMEDY
VICTORIA NANGLE > Diversity quota
O
ne of the great things about the creatively adventurous comedy circuit in this country is the diversity of things to make us laugh. Case in point is the rise and rise of The Boy With Tape On His Face, aka Tape Face as seen on America’s Got Talent semifinals and all over YouTube this year. Before that, though, Sam Wills – as he’s less well known – had been performing in the UK, gathering awards and rave reviews for some years, at the forefront of the resurgence in clowning, silent comedy, and prop comedy with shows that resonated long after leaving the venue. This week Tape Face is in town with a three night residency of his latest show, and with tickets going fast. A local showcase of the bizarre and unusual in comedy is Gittins To Know You, a monthly
night hosted by anticomedy hero Brian Gittins and with phenomenal headliners playing in a small safe space. This week top billing goes to Doc Brown, most recently seen on Dave’s Taskmaster, but will also have a mix of character and straight stand up support from Sussex and the south east. An underground gem, get on their mailing list for secret gig info before it’s announced. Gittins To Know You, Thursday 10 November, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, 7.30pm, £8; The Boy With Tape On His Face Is Tape Face, Thursday 10 – Saturday 12 November, The Old Market, 7.30pm, £15.50/13.50 Doc Brown

> Making light work at Phoenix
O
h, I wish Patrick O’Donnell would put together a retrospective. Because of all the local artists we’ve encountered he surely is the master of reinvention. Well, until he does we’ll head to the Phoenix, where ‘Retreating Light’ showcases ink works that stem from Patrick’s current astronomical obsession. Temperature and the chemical composition of bodies such as comets are denoted by specific hues radiating out from a whitehot centre as Patrick explores ‘subtractive colour’. He paints onto a white paper, using washes of ink to build up the images. Colours are created by subtracting parts of the spectrum to eliminate the visible white paper beneath. In contrast, the paintings start with a black canvas and build up a surface of colour and luminosity by layering films of paint over this. Until 11 December. www.artymagazines.com LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

I
magine all the city TV stations covering stories from the bizarre to the wonderful across the UK. Now imagine all of the best stories combined into one cleverly edited, easy to watch entertainment show, broadcasting all the talent that the local TV industry has to offer. Well that’s exactly what Digital Nation is.
“ Our approach has been to reinvent
and update the model that was set by the popular Nationwide show ”
“Our approach has been to reinvent and update the model that was set by the popular ‘Nationwide’ show back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. It’s a fastmoving magazine show, aimed at a modern audience, delivering stories to stimulate and entertain viewers, in watchable bitesized chunks.” said Angi Mariani, series producer. Digital Nation is part of an ongoing partnership with the BBC: all of the city TV stations work closely with the BBC, who broadcast the programme every week on iPlayer. It’s a great way to get all of the amazing local content out to the UK, reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers on the local TV stations broadcasting on Freeview 7, and also online with BBC’s excellent digital reach. The range of content is so vast and amazing – from snow dogs in Brighton, to the ‘oldest gay in the village’, Digital Nation is a great opportunity for everyone to hear stories on TV, filmed and edited in a ‘second to none’ way.
You can watch new episodes of Digital Nation on Latest TV every Tuesday at 9pm – Freeview 7, Virgin 159, or via our website www.thelatest.co.uk, or even on iPlayer. 18 | LATEST 7
ommunity groups are being invited to bid for a grant to put Pride into our city. For one weekend every year, the city is taken over by a sea of rainbows. From the parade watched by tens of thousands, through to the festival in Preston Park, through to the street party in St James' Street, the whole city comes together to mark the LGBT celebration. Now, community groups are being invited to bid for money raised from the event to ensure that the positive message of Pride has an impact on areas of Brighton and Hove all year round. Paul Kemp, director of Brighton and Hove Pride, said: “Community fundraising is central to the purpose of Pride in Brighton and Hove. On top of our record breaking fundraising for the Rainbow Fund we are thrilled to be able to deliver small grants funding through the social impact fund to small grass roots community organisations that can help deliver a positive community impact to the wider community." The Pride Social Impact Fund aims to support those groups or organisations which need a little helping hand in making a difference in their community. However big or small, the only criteria is that it will brighten up people's lives by the time Pride comes round again next year. This year, up to £12,500 is available for groups to bid for. Funding comes from contributions made by businesses within the St James' Street Party area. The application process for this year's fund is open now and bids will be considered by a panel made up of representatives from The Argus, BBC Sussex, Juice 107.2, Brighton and Hove Independent, Gscene, Latest magazine and Latest TV. Submissions should be a maximum of 400 words mapping out how the money will be spent and why the cause is deserving. Please note the maximum award will be £1,000. There is no lower limit. There is no restriction on numbers of entries by individual groups. However, the emphasis is on supporting community and grassroots groups, rather than individuals.

They may have covered the US election last night, but there’ll be more to say on that still – as well as reactions, satire, and humour about the rest of the world. Clever chaps.

It is 20 years since Southgate was part of the national team who beat the Scots 2-0 at Euro 96 - a similar result would keep England in control of Group F. Gordon Strachan’s men suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat in Slovakia last time out, so a victory against the ‘auld enemy’ would be a welcome morale boost.
