DOGGY TALES > Big Brother winner, Jason Burrill, helps dog rescue charity K9 Angels in Romania

S

ince winning this summer's Big Brother, Brighton’s own Jason Burrill has been a very busy man. Apart from filming a new Hollywood action film that will see him appear on screen with Julia Roberts’ brother Eric, he is now supporting the UK charity, K9 Angels. Between filming the movie, Jason flew to Romania with the K9 Angels, to work on the front line of their dog rescue mission. He revealed: "I really wanted to rescue dogs myself, but with so many commitments in America coming up I realised my time would be much more valuable to the charity in trying to raise awareness for their programme.

“ There’s one dog I fell in love with named Alfie ” “There's one dog I fell in love with, his name is Alfie and I really need to find him a home. He's been playing on my mind ever since seeing him in the Romanian dog pound, we've moved him to the K9 Angels small private shelter, but I really want to find him a loving home since the shelter is already full of dogs that the K9 Angels help." Jason met the remaining founders Victoria Eisermann and Pola Pospieszalska at PupAid and was really impressed with the rescue work they do. Since setting the charity up just five years ago the girls and a small team of dedicated volunteers have built a dog rescue shelter, re homed over 800 dogs, spayed and neutered over 3,000 dogs and started a UK school tour to educate children about responsible pet care, as well as raising hundreds of thousands to save homeless dogs. Victoria and Pola are delighted with the support of their third Angel Jason: "Jason helped us a great deal while we were away and as a genuine dog lover who wants to help animals we are thrilled to have his support. He is a really super guy so it's no surprise that he won Big Brother too!" To adopt visit: www.k9angels.org

righton & Hove businessman, Jordan Tsar, launched SkyFall, a contemporary, modern British/European restaurant in the heart of Hove, to realise a lifelong dream of owning a restaurant. SkyFall – a stylish, relaxed, high quality restaurant with a seasonal menu – opened its doors in 2015 and has quickly become a firm favourite for locals and tourists alike. This summer, SkyFall welcomed a new Head Chef – one of the UK’s youngest. At 21, Nathan Pfefferle is already delivering creative, exciting menus with a focus on quality, locallysourced produce. SkyFall has also actively supported a range of charities, including The Sussex Beacon, Rockinghorse and Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Jordan told Latest that “Engaging with our local business community is an important part of our ethos, and through our charitable commitments we strive to make a difference to people’s lives in Sussex”.

SKYFALL STYLISH • RELAXED • HIGH QUALITY Sussex Beacon CEO, Simon Dowe, said “we rely on the commitment and support of local businesses, like SkyFall, to fund much of our important work within the City and beyond. As HIV infection rates continue to rise in Sussex, it’s vital that we continue to educate, inform and support people living with or at risk of HIV. The special, ongoing relationship we have developed with SkyFall enables us to continue our work. They have been so supportive, and we’re very grateful”.

“ A firm favourite for locals and tourists alike ” A recently refurbished, fully equipped private function and corporate events space is proving extremely popular and SkyFall have donated the space to several charities already, including the Chestnut Tree House Big Heart Auction which went on to raise over £35,000 earlier this year.

ANDREW KAY TASTES THE FOOD & MEETS THE CHEF

S

kyFall is stylish, there is no denying that and the smart interior is very appealing as is the short but varied menu. I did that crazy thing of taking a look online and spotting a dish that I really wanted. It can be a fatal mistake but on this occasion I was lucky and on arrival there it was. But I'm getting ahead of myself so I will slip into reverse. It was a bitterly cold evening but once inside it was warm and cosy, not an adjective that you can often employ when describing modern restaurant interiors. I ordered a glass of white and Miss L had some sort of girly pink prosecco affair which she loved. The menu has about the right number of choices, by which I mean that you can feel confident that it is all cooked fresh and to order but still offering a good choice of dishes. Ms L started with scallops on a bed of aubergine caviar with slices of romanesco, a good looking dish with fat and perfectly cooked scallops. I spotted a clam and mussel chowder, perfect fare for a cold night and it was a good choice in which the chef had managed to do the almost impossible and create a flavour packed soup that was in contrast rather light and the presence of saffron was excellently judged adding just the right amount of musty interest. I was once asked what I though saffron tasted and smelled of and I said hymn book and I mean that in a good way. Miss L then chose the hake with chorizo and I looked on with envy at thick slice of perfectly pearly white fish accompanied by spicy chorizo, a classic combination that the chef had clearly pulled off to perfection.

“ I was impressed by the food and equally impressed by the chef ” I had my heart set on trying his oxtail dish. Oxtail is a favourite and I would go back again and again to eat this. It came with a rib eye steak too and the balance of rare and well cooked beef was inspired. If I had any criticism it would be that the dish is generous, way beyond my capacity – but I can see that for a lot of diners this would add to its appeal. I certainly would not have wanted to miss his divine sweet potato gnocci, curly kale and roast courgette either! This meant that I was too full for pud but Miss L tried the tarte aux pommes with sorrel icecream. I could see that it was made by the chef and not bought in. She loved it and having lived in France she should recognise a good tarte when she tastes one. I was impressed by the food and equally impressed by Nathan when he joined us. He’s intimidatingly young but clearly born to cook and started early, first as a pot washer gradually learning his craft and working in some of the city’s best know eateries – including the impressive 23 St. Georges. His passion for creating great food and flavour combinations is obvious but he is also passionate about creating seasonal dishes using the best local produce he can source. Working in a kitchen is hard so his youth is in his favour when it comes to the energy required and right now he is putting that energy to good use. I love talking food and I loved talking to Nathan about food. He has a youthful excitement about the dishes but as yet is modest and ready to learn and grow more. I reckon Nathan Pfefferle is a chef to watch! 42 Church Road, Hove, BN3 2FN www.skyfallhove.com 01273 041007 Twitter: @skyfallhove Facebook: /SkyFallHove

CELEBCITY

Charmaine Davies > Jolly Comedy!

NOW & THEN Andy Garth > November auction

Jo Public

A

s I write this column I'm working in Prague, in the Czech Republic, at the International Comedy Festival. I'm here for ten days as the MC, along with Geoff Whiting and getting to work with great comedians such as Brighton's Zoe Lyons, Dave Thompson, Nathan Caton, Carly Smallman and Christian SchulteLoh.

“ I’ve been here five days and am having a wonderful time ” So far I've been here for five days and am having a wonderful time in a beautiful city. When I return I'm looking forward to going to watch a show a little closer to home in Worthing, on the 19th of November. 'Jolly Comedy' is a well established comedy night run by musical comedian Jo Public. I've known Jo for many years now and she is one of the funniest people I know. Her self deprecating style and comedy songs are hysterical, but the comedy night she runs in Worthing is a great night out with class acts. This month Suzy Bennett ("vibrant, gorgeous and extremely funny” say the BBC) is the headline act, with support by Sam Savage and her comedy character Lynda Larkin. Both of whom I've worked with in the past and are brilliant comedians. The night will be hosted by Jo Public. It's an evening not be missed with this line up of fantastically funny ladies. The other bonus about this night is you can take your own drinks with you! Result! Jolly Comedy will be at Heene Road Community Centre, 122 Heene Road, Worthing, BN11 4PL. Doors open at 7.30pm, you can get tickets in advance for £10 on WeGotTickets or on the door for £15 www.jollycomedyclub.com

I

t's the last auction of the year which I hold jointly with Mr Postcard (Robert Jeeves of Step Back In Time in Queens Road) and the interest has been incredible. We have 254 lots to offer for sale on Tuesday 22 November at Aldrington Church Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove, with viewing from 6.30pm and the actual sale starting at 8pm. We have now offered over 1,000 lots this year of anything and everything to do with Brighton, Hove and Sussex from books, prints, photos and posters to postcards, ephemera and brass plaques. The prices range from £2 to £500 and we have a lot of fun doing it, and only charge 10 per cent commission for sellers and buyers. Come along or email me at brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com for a catalogue. Anyway, briefly onto a couple of bits from the sale. Firstly a great view of life on the seafront in the 1950s with serious buskers playing for their money on Kings Road. A great shot of social history... but you wouldn't stand as close to the road these days, or in fact try and get your music heard. Too dangerous and too noisy with the traffic. Guide for this one is £8. The next couple of postcards are completely bananas and fun advertising or joke cards for Cricket at Sussex circa 1910. I'm really not sure of the thought process behind the idea but hey, each to their own! Guide on this lot is £12. If you want any more info please let me know. 009_LS805_Interview_Daniel Sloss_Layout 1 11/11/2016 16:31 Page 1

DANIEL SLOSS > The acerbic wit of Daniel Sloss comes to town this week, but not before the popular Scottish comedian talked to Victoria Nangle about Irn Bru and what he wants for Christmas Hi Daniel, how’s tricks today? Great. Just went to the gym and now I’m relaxing before tonight’s gig in Livingston. What are the main issues in your life, on this day where motions towards a second Scottish referendum are being put into play? I tend to not have many issues in my life, at least not any I’m taking seriously. Those are problems for future me to deal with.

Going back to the original question though, what superpower would you like to have, and what kind of adventures would you have with it? Nowadays I’d just like the ability to stop time so that I could pause time, have a nap, and then wake up and not have missed any of the day. I’d also use it to murder a bunch of people I don’t like, but mainly the sleep thing.

“ I’d also use it to murder a bunch of people I don’t like ” Three years ago I asked you what superpower you’d like to have, and you said the power to punch Jaden Smith in the face. Do you still have a vitriolic line of fire, and if so who is currently in your sites? I think now that he’s older and wiser, he’d probably punch me back. And I don’t do well in fights, so I’ll revoke that. Now I’ve moved that hate onto other places and people, like Paris, and Donald Trump. You used to write for Frankie Boyle, back years ago. Now that he’s not touring would you ever get him to write jokes for you? I don’t think I have the skill or poise to be able to pull of Frankie’s jokes. He’s far more intelligent than I am and that’s why he’s able to get away. If you weren’t performing comedy, what would you be doing? Hating every second of my life.

You have been gigging semi regularly Stateside over the years with a respected and growing profile. Would you ever relocate there with a sitcom and a movie franchise? Absolutely not. Have you seen whats going on over there? I love America and I love gigging there, but Scotland is my home. I never want to leave here. I’d happily go to America for a couple of months if something I liked came up, but they don’t have Irn Bru, so they lose in the long run. If so, what would your movie franchise be about? Who knows? But I’d make sure there was a sad ending where everyone died and nothing got resolved. There are too many unrealistic happy endings in movies, where the guy gets the girl, the girl gets the guy, the guy gets the guy, the world is fine, everything works out, kisses all round. That’s not real life, everyone dies, love is a chemical, nothing matters. I find humour in that.

This show premiered at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and has been cited as garnering your biggest audiences to date. Do you enjoy the big crowds – would you play the O2? – as you are very good at audience connection, or do you enjoy the more intimate venues? Absolutely never playing the O2 in my life. I have undying respect for the comedians who can play rooms like that, but that’s not what I want to do. I like intimate crowds. Even some of the bigger theatres still manage to maintain that level of intimacy, so I wouldn’t mind playing the 2,000 seaters as long as it felt comfortable still. Also, my comedy absolutely does not have the market to sell out the O2. Not enough people in Britain want to hear about drugs, why love is dead and death.

What are you going to do when you visit Brighton to play here? I have a bunch of friends that live down there so probably going out after the show and getting completely, but respectfully, drunk. What do you want for Christmas? A table football table. Daniel Sloss: So? With special guest Kai Humphries, Komedia, Sunday 20 November 2016, 8pm, £14.50/12

olitics is baffling me. We’ve just had the presidential election last week and I’m still reeling. If there’s one thing we have learned in the last year it’s that polls cannot always be trusted and that unrest is a bit global at the moment. It wasn’t always this way. I did an Alevel in Government & Politics and used to follow the news avidly. Always a keen fan of satire, from Drop The Dead Donkey to The News Quiz, I’ve found it a useful and entertaining way to get a different perspective on the mixture of dry facts and wild panic often presented by the mainstream media.

“ Like a Hollywood newsreel of the end of the world ” The thing is, recent news pieces – and by that I mean in the last twelve months at least – are reading like a Hollywood newsreel of the end of the world. I put it down to viewer attention spans getting shorter and so a more sensational grabyoubythethroat delivery started, developing into a oneupmanship of Fox News style reportage. News is being spread via short clips on social media and someone spewing Katie Hopkinsstyle bile gets you a lot more hits than a Channel 4 Dispatches 45 minute detailed investigation. It’s not helped by the fact that when I popped Rik Mayall’s outrageous political lampooning from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s ‘The New Statesman’ on the other day, it was all filled with expensesfiddling and cash for questions gags. Maybe protagonist Alan B’Stard gave them the ideas... We are in times of change with very few clear voices coming through, which is why I’m baffled. There are exciting good changes, like the growing ecological awareness and wave of new feminism. It’s not all bad. I’d just like someone to send me a history book from the future to tell me how it all turns out. 10 | LATEST 7

hat makes you smile? Lots of things make me smile, silly things for the main will put a grin on my face but also some serious ones too, a great painting, a well crafted play, a choir that produces a sweet and powerful sound and, wait for it, theatre organ music. Some of you will not have a clue what I am talking about, and some of you will never ever get the chance to hear this wonderful and sadly disappearing musical form. I managed to spot that there was going to be a concert a The Dome in Brighton featuring their amazing theatre organ at the hands of the quite incredible Michael Wooldridge. I immediately organised tickets to go along with a friend who is equally keen on this art form, yes I am declaring it an art form. Theatre organs, or cinema organs are mighty beasts, beasts that merit the phrase 'bells and whistles' because they have bells and whistles – and a whole host of other 'voices'. And if you ever wondered where the saying 'pulling out all the stops' comes from then here is the answer. Wooldridge certainly pulled out all the stops and wrested from the beast an amazing array of complex sounds, some serious and some very frivolous, that is the joy of this music, it's capable of being rock solid and at the same time deeply shallow – I love it. And what's not to admire about a man that can announce that the day before it came to him to perform a medley of songs from The Sound of Music and then 24 hours later sit at the mighty organ and do just that without one sheet of written music – more than impressive. So I loved it, it filled me with joy and admiration – and it made me sad too. Why? Well it was a Monday afternoon and there were about 100 of us there soaking up the genius. Only 100 and at 60 I might well have been the youngest! It made me realise that this is an art that could become extinct. How many new organists are embracing the style and the repertoire, the technique required to keep this thing going. Very few I would guess. And if no one is listening and no one can play then who will keep these mighty beasts maintained, it cannot be cheap! I cannot wait for the next one and forgive me now if I become a theatre organ evangelist and start nagging you all to go, I guarantee that you will be amazed by the extraordinary musical dexterity and amount of joyous fun that you will see and hear.

“ Theatre organs

merit the phrase bells and whistles ”

THE DAMNED > The Captain speaks to Jeff Hemmings

4

'New Rose' still stands up brilliantly today. How did it feel when that came out and got attention? I was particularly pleased when we did Top Of The Pops. "Is this the stage where The Sweet performed ‘Ballroom Blitz’ I wondered?" 'New Rose' was

0 years ago this October, The Damned released what is universally thought of as the first ever UK punk single, ‘New Rose’. They were also the first UK band to release an album (Damned Damned Damned) and the first to tour America. 40 years later. Who would have guessed they would still be going strong? This year they had played Coachella Festival in the USA, the Royal Albert Hall, are in the middle of a long UK tour, and have been recording a new album. Their debut album of 1977 will be rereleased in February of 2017. Brightonbased Captain Sensible and singer Dave Vanian are the only two remaining original members of a band considered one of the 'Big Four', along with Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and The Clash.

Chrissie Hynde said about the Damned: "they were probably the most musically accomplished punk outfit in town". Brian's (James, original guitarist) an amazing guitarist, and Rat (Scabies) was the punk drummer. It could all get quite frenzied onstage at times when

Vanian was climbing the lighting rigs and I saw my job as the bassist that glues it all together.... Somehow.

recorded in a dingy demo studio round the back of a garage. It sounds like it too. No ProTools on that.

What does the Captain make of it all? You sound like Goldfinger... “So, what happened Mr Sensible? I expected you to die!” We were on auto destruct for a while, and for someone with a stage name like mine bad behaviour was almost obligatory. I'm as surprised at us reaching our 40th as anyone else to be honest, but having fun with it.

At the time, in 1976, did you feel that something good and different was happening? Dossing about for a couple of years, going to the Marquee every night, living in the clothes you stood up in, blagging an occasional meal off interviewers. I think Sniffin’ Glue's Danny Baker took us to a Wimpy... it was burgers and knickerbocker glories all round.

The first UK punk band to tour the US as well... Do you think you helped to kickstart the hardcore punk revolution in the States? I don't know anything about that scene. I’m an easy listening buff. The Carpenters and The Monkees float my boat.

“ It could all get quite frenzied

onstage at times when Vanian was climbing the lighting rigs ”

'Smash It Up' is one of my favourite Damned songs. That's

your guitar work on there, isn't it? The guitar is all over the place... Yes, must be me then. All that listening to Hendrix albums... some of it must've stuck. The rest is bluff. You were enjoying a solo career in the early ‘80s (including the chart hit ‘Happy Talk’), and left the band for a while. Can you tell me about that period? I had a bunch of songs... some of which were too pop for The Damned and binned. Got me a record deal with A&M though, with whom I had a few fun years as Britain's most unlikely pop star. People remember ‘Happy Talk’, but there were some other decent songs, selfpenned, too. New album coming soon. And you’re raising money via Pledge to make it happen. How's that one going? Don't worry, we won't abscond with the cash! Having said that, the old Damned probably would've. Every album we made sounds different from the previous one. So, expect the unexpected. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Thursday 24 November, 7pm, £27

> The Jetty

A

fter 30 years of living by the sea it seems hard to believe that only now are there real choices of places to eat that specialise in fish and seafood. It's not that there was nowhere but those places that did exist were few and far between. Now we have The Jetty, a new restaurant in the smart new Harbour Hotel on the seafront. I slipped in for a sneaky lunch soon after their excellent launch party and was pretty impressed but after visiting with Mr M and Mr F for dinner I would like to confirm that this place is serving very impressive food.

“ I looked on with envy as these are amongst my favourite things to eat ” We started at the bar with a cocktail, excellent drinks made with style, before moving into the spacious dining room where smart staff explained the menus and the dishes, there are lots of options that need a little explanation. We're good mates with similar tastes so we decided to share the fruits de mer, a small one, to which we added a couple of extra oysters, well you cannot share an oyster, and a pot of cockle popcorn. It was all good, especially the fat mussels and creamy smoked salmon, I liked the crab mayonnaise but would have liked more brown meat in there to add that musky note, but the other liked it as it was. Mr M chose plaice with brown shrimps and a side of buttered potatoes and declared it first class. I have to say that the chef certainly gave him a good portion of shrimp atop the plaice and I looked on with envy as these are amongst my favourite things to 14 | LATEST 7

eat. It was certainly a nice plump fish and cooked perfectly so that the flesh lifted cleanly from the bone. Mr F chose the stone bass which looked equally impressive as did the small potato topped seafood pie that sat on the plate. He enjoyed it too but felt that it could have taken a touch more seasoning. Not a huge problem and certainly better than over seasoned fish which is basically ruined. His side order promised a little chilli heat and again he could have taken a little more – but all in all he enjoyed the dish. I chose skate, my favourite fish and it came with capers, radicchio and bacon, a perfect seasoning for the huge wing that arrived. It was a more than generous portion and it was perfectly cooked and it came on a bed of buttery tender stem broccoli and French beans. It was so easy to eat, the long threads of sweet flesh lifting cleanly from the cartilage, yes no tiny bones with skate, and it was made easier by the provision of fish knives, yes I am a cutlery geek! I also ordered a salad of avocado and pine nuts which was superb but not so easy to eat as the large portion came in a deep dish and diving in meant that it fell all over the place. It tasted great but could have looked so much better. Mr M and Mr F both chose to finish with an espresso martini sabayon. Mr F scoffed the lot but Mr M was beaten. I guessed it would be rich and chose the boozy plums with ginger bread and yogurt sorbet. It was a beautiful autumnal dish with dark fruits and spices lightened by the sorbet and great contrasting textures from soft fruits and cake to shards of caramelised plum. A real pudding delight. We drank an Argentinian pinot gris which was pretty good but moved on to a great Riesling from Alsace. The Jetty is cooking up a seafood storm and is well worth a visit, I will certainly be back very soon. EXHUMING McCARTHY IN THE AGE OF TRUMP The election of Donald Trump, concluding as it does the most bitterly divisive Presidential campaign in popular memory, may be said to echo another torrid, smearhappy period of American history: the age of McCarthy.

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

This November, the University of Sussex takes a look back on that age with two freetoenter events presented as part of the nationwide humanities festival Being Human. Staged under the umbrella title The Art of Lying, both events will focus on the remarkable life of McCarthyite supergrass Harvey Matusow. Matusow, whose archives are held by the UoS, became notorious in Cold War America for his professional witness work, all of which came to a halt in 1954, when Matusow announced that most of his “evidence” had been fabricated. The Art of Lying comprises two events over two nights. On 22 Nov, Professors Diarmuid Hester and Doug Haynes will be joined by writer/actor Robert Cohen at Brighton’s Latest Musicbar, for a discussion aimed at answering the question, Who is Harvey Matusow? On 23 Nov, also at the Latest Bar, Cohen will perform The Trials of Harvey Matusow, the awardwinning oneman show he researched in the Matusow archives at UoS. More info at beinghumanfestival.org Tickets for both events are FREE, but must be booked in advance by emailing bookings@thelatest.co.uk.

> The Boys In The Band It’s around 50 years since this milestone of theatre was written and first produced and in those years it has lost none of its poignancy or power. The cast is excellent, it will only work if you can believe in them and their associations and you really can. Ian Hallard’s gradual descent through the play is beautifully delivered, an extraordinarily moving performance. Daniel Boys is the perfect foil as self doubting friend Harold, and James Holmes delivers an Emery that is cloyingly brittle and likeable too. Director Adam Penford drills deep down into that and does it with a great deal of intelligence. The gay community may have achieved a level of equality now and a level of acceptance too, but within our own ranks are we any more accepting? I fear not. The Red Turtle

C

Toy released their selftitled debut in 2012, quickly followed by Join The Dots in 2013. And although they have recently lost keyboardist Alejandra Diez, they’ve been joined by Max Oscarnold as they get ready to tour the new album Clear Shot. That came from something that Dom came up with: “you get a clear shot through the miasmic power.” “It was an interesting phrase he wrote down. “We just thought it was synonymous with things we were going through, personal problems we were having as everyone does. As a band we were trying to push through and take it as far as we can. It seemed like a call to arms and that ended up being the title for the album. It seemed apt.” Now based in London, the band all met originally in Brighton. “All of us, except for Max, grew up as teenagers in Brighton. We were at Cardinal Newman and then me and Dom went to Bhasvic. As soon as we finished that we moved up to London. I’ve still got some friends there. It’s always nice to go back there, to play.”

inecity is a fantastic film festival for its blending of art documentaries, foreign language cinema, local films, short films, Q&A sessions and more at an affordable price. You can get three tickets for the price of four and there are also plenty of £5 tickets available for under 25s. I can’t hope to cover all of the highlights here but will select a few that look particularly enticing. Cassette: A Documentary Kiki Mixtape explores the culture of music sharing through cassettes with contributions from Thurston Moore and Henry Rollins. (Tues 15 Nov, Duke’s At Komedia, 9pm). After The Storm is the latest outing from Hirokazu Koreeda, a superb director of contemplative, personal and insightful films (reminiscent of Tokyo Story) that I can’t wait to see. Kick off your Friday night with some solemn tears. (Fri 18 Nov, Duke of York’s, 9pm). It didn’t make much of a splash but Kenneth Lonergan’s film Margaret had some memorably strange, fussy dialogue and a stunning, agitated lead performance from Anna Paquin. Only his third film in 16 years, Manchester By The Sea could be one for any fans of characterdriven drama such as Six Feet Under. (Sat 19 Nov, Duke of York’s, 6pm). Lynn Ruth Miller is The World’s Oldest Comedienne, as you can see in a riotous documentary by our very own Bill Smith. Tickets are only £5 and include a Q&A with Miller herself, and Bill too. (Tues 22 Nov, Latest Music Bar, 7pm). Kiki looks like a different sort of vibrant documentary, shedding light on the artistic/activist ballroom dance movement for young queer people in New York City. (Thurs 24 Nov, Duke of York’s, 9pm). The Red Turtle, meanwhile, is an international collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Oscarwinning Dutch animator Michael Dudok De Wit. Studio Ghibli’s films are consistently, mesmerisingly beautiful so I have high hopes for this one. (Sun 27 Nov, Duke’s At Komedia, 2pm).

Londonbased band with strong Brighton connections, the five piece Toy have just released their third album, and it’s another great slice of psychedelic rock infused with elements of the cinematic, Krautrock, shoegaze and indiepop. Fronted by Tom Dougal (whose sister Rose was once in The Pipettes, and now has her own solo career), Toy were born out of the ashes of Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, a band who were signed to a major label and were just about to release a much hyped debut album before the band imploded due to ultrahigh expectations. “We just stopped the whole thing very quickly,” says Tom. “It was a little bit tough to deal with for a while, but very quickly we pulled ourselves together. We realised it wasn’t the kind of music we wanted to be doing. We didn’t want to play second fiddle to someone else. We wanted to be in the driving seat. We never looked back from then.”

COMEDY > Victoria Nangle hails The Big Yin

T

he Big Yin is coming to town, and such is his popularity an extra date (the Monday) was announced in September as an addition to his miniresidency.

“ Billy Connolly was voted the best comedian of all time ” Hailed by many as one of the originators of the contemporary storytelling style of comedy, Billy Connolly was voted the best comedian of all time by Channel 4’s viewers.

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

Having been hawking his craft touring for the last half a century, as well as taking time out to star in films, pick up awards, and chinwag with the royals as he picked up a CBE, Connolly’s live humour is still strong and his comedic voice true to the rebellious nature he started with. He may no longer be hanging about working in Glasgow’s shipyards, but his eccentric flights of fancy and determination not to follow the crowd’s opinions simply find new outlets in his current life, with family, politics and whimsy all still strong. For a star that’s a more recent arrival to the spotlight, check out Nish Kumar – currently at the Helm of BBC Radio 4’s Newsjack. Smart, funny, and intelligent, Kumar has had a lot of attention in the last 12 months, and for all the right reasons. Enjoy. Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour, Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 November, Brighton Centre, 8pm, from £39.05; Nish Kumar: Actions Speak Louder Than Words Unless You Shout The Words Real Loud, Komedia, Wednesday 16 November, 8pm, £14/12

merica, Kosovo. Latvia and many more nations, have something in common. Tiny TV. Hundreds of small communities of a few thousand people in these countries have local micro TV. Britain has none. Micro TV company CHALK TV, wants to put that right. It has started the first truly local web based micro TV service in the tiny town of Lewes, letting the townsfolk see what's happening in their own back yard when no one else will. Exciting. Innovative. Brand new, its shows are shown on Latest TV, every Tuesday at 5.30pm. CHALK TV is the UK’s first micro TV station based in Lewes. It might never have come about if it hadn’t been for Latest TV’s Bill Smith!

“ Exciting, innovative, brand new! ” CHALK TV’s founder Keith Hayes and Bill are both champions of local TV and spent many hours talking about local TV for Brighton. When the government legislation was implemented, it became apparent that small communities such as Lewes would miss out. But Bill never forgot the conversations and suggested a half hour programme about Lewes to be shown on Latest TV would be intriguing to his wider audience. As a result, a group of TV experts in Lewes including well known TV professionals such as former ITN cameraman Mick Hawksworth, have developed web based TV as a micro TV service for Lewes, supported by Latest TV and the half hour programme ‘Latest in Lewes’. Our programmes are produced by leading professionals, who live in the tiny town. Producers, presenters, camera crews, graphic artists and more, who have worked for top TV companies in Britain and many other parts of the world, who now want to use their skills to bring a vital news and information service to the place where they live. CHALK TV knows that the rich and colourful life of small towns can be intriguing to people outside their community. A recent TV programme on a local pub brought accolades from international viewers. Keith Hayes enthuses: "That's what we never see. The weird, wonderful, esoteric customs and peculiarities of English daily life. A dog buying a pint of beer in a 'Pub' with a beer mat". CHALK brings this rich tapestry of British tiny town life every week! 18 | LATEST 7

MONDAY 21 The Last Miners BBC1, 9pm Just over 30 years after the Miners’ Strike this documentary follows the workers at Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, the last deep mine in Britain, as it prepares to close. Dropping over 800 metres below ground, in temperatures that rise to 33 degrees, this is a rare opportunity to see the true conditions.

Two Doors Down BBC2, 10pm Series two of this comedy kicks off with Cathy and Colin returning froma luxury cruise – and they can’t wait to book another one. They’re so keen they want the rest of the neighbourhood to go with them, which turns out not to be entirely altruistic. Christine’s flush though, after a PPI windfall, and being pushed to celebrate.

Murder, She Wrote ITV3, 7pm So Jessica is involved with a house that was reputedly owned by Benedict Arnold. Who’s that? Only an American Revolution general who defected to the British army, that’s who! No wonder he kept quiet confirming where he lived. Anyway, there’s a murder there. Who’d’ve guessed that? Best start hunting for clues.
