Starting on November 26, the Artists Open Houses Christmas Festival covers the last weekend of November and the first two weekends of December, stretching across Brighton and Hove to Ditchling and Lewes. Waiting behind the door at 11 Rugby Road is a festive forest of trees hung with handmade decorations and a candyland kitchen crammed with Christmas treats. While at TheBigForest, in Chester Terrace, Mr Rowling and Mr Craven welcome visitors to their retro Christmas emporium. Handmade gifts include felt dog sculptures, dog brooches, miniature animals, cutout and dress Brighton men dolls and felt tree decorations. Peculiar, wonderful and thrilling, The Stanley Road Store will be holding special themed weekends, including Merry Kitschmas, Rough Luxury and Blooming Botanics. On offer are children’s soft toys made from recycled fabrics, knitted kitties and a special children’s grotto.
offering an amazing array of gifts from their talented collective of designers to complement a show of new work by local illustrator Dan Walters. And in a small gallery in Fisher Street, right in the heart of Lewes, portrait and reportage photographer Rosie Wooldridge exhibits her new exhibition Images of Childhood. In this series of portraits, children and young people were photographed engaged in an activity important to their lives. The portraits are accompanied by drawings and writings by the children telling their own stories. Don’t miss William Collier House in North Road, displaying work by people who have experienced unsettled housing and homelessness. Their last Open House exhibition was described as ‘really inspiring and thought provoking’. At Grace Eyre, in Marshall’s Row, see an inspirational collection of works by some of Brighton and Hove’s finest outsider artists. And at 48 St George’s Road view paintings and sculpture by seven students entering their final year at the University of Brighton. The Artists Open Houses Festival is the perfect way to explore and celebrate this winter – and what better way to shop for unique presents than with a glass of mulled wine and mince pie in hand! > Bringing feminism, antianxiety, and occasionally a pregnant friend to Brighton, last year’s Fosters’ Edinburgh Comedy Award Newcomer winner Sofie Hagen talks to Victoria Nangle After the success of Bubblewrap, did you feel a lot of pressure for what Shimmer Shatter ought to be? Yes but the pressure I put on myself had nothing to do with Bubblewrap. That's just how my mind works I rarely give myself
tourshow a really nice and comfortable place to be. So people can email me at anxietytour2016@gmail.com (which is an awful email, I know, I created it at 2am) and tell me if they need anything. Then I'll come out and walk them in and

permission to be mediocre, except when it comes to exercise and healthy eating. Had Bubblewrap failed, I still would have aimed to do an amazing show this year. Hopefully people agree that I have. I really like that you are appealing to have anxietysafe venues, with genderneutral toilets. What made you decide to take a stand on these issues? Thank you! I am so excited about it. My audience is a bunch of introverted, uncool, intelligent and kindhearted oddballs like me. And I struggle with shows sometimes. I hate buying tickets for something if I can't choose a seat. I panic if I have to sit in the middle of a huge crowd. When I realised my audience are similar to me, I desperately wanted to make my
they can pick a seat or whatever they need. We'll take it on a 'one person at a time' basis. You manage to combine being political with being immensely likeable, bringing the idealistic back to the personal with things like your examples of failing at feminism in your popular Guilty Feminist Podcast. What made you want to draw attention to the politics of life? Haha, you make it sound like such a conscious choice. Which I guess would be the normal thing to do. I usually just run with my feelings. I get excited about something, or curious or angry or sad, I share it. On stage, in my newsletter, on Twitter, in podcasts. Feminism is a thing that makes me both extraordinarily happy and sad
and angry at the same time and being allowed to think out loud about it with one of my best friends (Deborah Frances White) is such a gift. What is your favourite ‘Failing At Feminism’ example? When I'm really overworked and stressed and anxious because I don't know where the next paycheck is going to come from or I feel I have too much responsibility over a project, a tiny voice in my head goes: If only you were a 1920’s housewife. But then I remember how much I love to, you know, vote. Post Brexit – and being successful in both Britain and Denmark – where do you see yourself spending most of your time over the next few years? Britain. For so many reasons. Obviously because I love it so much. It feels like home. But also, weirdly enough, BECAUSE of Brexit. People are terrified, apparently. Why else would you choose to vote for something that's so hateful? And we can only fight fear and hatred with love and kindness. People need to understand that we are not the bad guys. I do realise that I'm not the person they're afraid of, as I'm awfully white but all I can do is stay and make sure to add a bit of that lovely melting pot of cultures that Britain is. Which makes it great.
Has the Brexit result made any difference to you? On a personal level, it has made me incredibly sad. I feel myself get incredibly emotional just remembering the morning the results came in. I refused to believe it. The right wing gained power in Denmark years ago and I tried to close my eyes and believe that it was just Denmark. Now it seems to be the whole world. Have we learned nothing from history? How is this possible? I am disappointed and angry. I don't know what, but I feel like I should have done more. Spoken to more people, tried to make them less afraid. I wish there was an answer or that I could go around and hug every single person who voted 'leave' and tell them to stop being so angry at the wrong people. Are you looking forward to coming to Brighton? I am awfully excited! Brighton is my vacation place within Britain. I went there for a weekend break with my pregnant friend. The atmosphere is like nowhere else. Komedia is also my favourite venue, so it's definitely one of my favourite spots on my tour. I only wish it was a bit further away from London, so I had an excuse to spend the night and not go back home. Sofie Hagen: Shimmer Shatter, Komedia, Thursday 24 November 2016, 8pm – £12/10

lright, I think it’s okay to talk about Christmas now without getting my head bitten off. I know lots of people that think the best time to buy presents is Christmas Eve – and good luck to them! – but what with having a big family, some of whom involve an elaborate and confusing timetable of trains and meals and passing like ships in the night, it’s always paid to be organised and start early. Not to mention spreading the cost of the presents I’d like to give between two months’ paychecks always seems like a good idea.
“ Get away from the jinglebell buzzing throng asap ” My main thing is that I like to give presents that won’t just annoy the recipient and gather dust. I mean, I’ve given my fair share of those – I’ll never forget the look on my Dad’s face when I gifted him a giant inflatable hammer that squeaked whenever you hit anyone with it. I believe it squeaked more when it was in my hands before delivery than ever it did after his confused face opened the paper on that bundle of joy. But I do like to try and give someone something that they might actually enjoy. Put a bit of thought into it, have a wander around the shops until the right present jumps out at me – without that murmur at the back of my mind that says all I really want to do is see if I can carve a trail through the busy seasonal masses and get away from the jinglebellbuzzing throng asap! These things need time... and space. Which is why I start my Christmas shopping in November. Craft fairs present opportunities to pick up oneoff prizes that can just about hold their own okay against wealthier family members’ offerings. Boutiques provide bespoke treasures. And engraving a small but precious article can convey that special something. Plus, this way January meals can consist of more than turkey curry and beans on toast. Here’s to a balanced diet! few weeks ago I went to a fund raising concert in Brighton where I listened to two of my favourite singers, Claire Martin and Barb Jungr. Claire is an amazing jazz singer with truly captivating interpretive skills. Barb is a chanteuse whose voice is unique and she has the skill to wring out every last emotion from a song. I love her work and cannot wait to hear her new album of Beatles songs when it is released. At the weekend on social media she posted a video of a northern brass band. I love the sound of a brass band but it does have the most extraordinary effect on me. Brass bands make me cry. I think my first memory of hearing a brass band was a childhood Christmas, I must have been five or maybe six as the memory is located close to my grandparents' home where at that time we still lived. It was Christmas morning and overnight it had snowed. Our street was cobbled but that morning everything lay under a thick blanket of pure white snow (yes cobbled, I am that old). Of course I had hardly slept in anticipation of the gifts that Father Christmas would bring so everyone had to get up early. My grandfather was in the kitchen cooking sausages and bacon and lamb chops and my baby brother and I were running round with new toys and selection boxes that we had been forbidden to open. Eventually I was coaxed into my best clothes ready to go to church. It was only two streets away but being late was not going to be an option. Finally, dressed in my best, we stepped through the vestibule – now there's a word that marries well to cobbled streets in terms of dating me – onto the front path which dad had already cleared of snow and from there out on the slippery York stone paving slabs beyond. It was cold and crisp and quiet – or was it? Wafting across the air came the sweet, golden and mellow sounds of a brass band playing carols. It was the Salvation Army Band, all dressed in crimson uniforms, caps and bonnets. It's a memory that I will never forget and one that always prompts me to donate to them to this day.

> Moksha Caffe
I
’ve been a fan of Moksha since day one. and confess that I find it slightly alarming that it was almost nine years ago, how time flies. Moksha is a success story and it’s easy to see why, proprietor and cook Oliver de Trafford is hands on, even after nine years you can see him there most days with his apron on, up to his neck in cake batter. And it was the cakes that first grabbed my attention, I mean, what’s not to like about a man that can make a battenburg that would put a smile on the face of Mary Berry. This time though I was in the mood for a late lunch, Moksha has over the years developed a great lunch menu and breakfast too, of which more later. The menu is always tempting and there are many classics to choose from. I trust that they are classically made too as Oliver prides himself on doing things properly, hence a perfectly made hollandaise and not some prefabricated job out of a jar.
“ A battenburg that would put a smile on the face of Mary Berry ” I like huevos rancheros but spotted a new item, huevos benedictos. Now that really is a tempting idea and one that I could not resist. I was right to give in to it too. It ticked so many of my boxes and left me with a big smile on my face, chorizo, avocado, tomato perfect poached eggs and hollandaise on toasted sourdough – bliss. Oliver spotted me there and came for a chat, bringing with him some hash browns and baked beans. Now I’m neither a hash brown or baked beans sort of man but I had to give in to these, little clouds of soft grated potato in a nest of crisp potato and zingy pinto and butter beans in a vibrant sauce. It was far too much for me to finish sadly. I had ordered a latte too which was great, the coffees are always great here, but again Oliver trumped it with a scary green smoothie. Now I have tried so many superfood smoothies and pretty much all of them sound good but taste like pond water. Not this one, it was deliciously sharp and fresh with a ginger kick. Oliver is always ready to rise to a challenge and by popular demand he has launched an excellent Christmas menu that will be available not only during the day but also some evenings and also LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
for private parties by arrangement. I took a look and as expected there is a great mix of traditional and new to tempt any palate and at sensible prices too, and the cafe is of course licensed to sell alcohol. I should have stopped with the smoothie but out came a stack of blueberry pancakes. In my view blueberries can be rather dull unless of course they are coupled with pancakes and maple syrup. In that combination the sharp fruits are balanced by the soft pancakes and sweet syrup in an utterly irresistible fashion. Oliver makes great, light pancakes with not a trace of the baking powder that is so often the downfall of this classic American dish and although I did not finish I had a damned good go at them. I also praise Moksha for serving a breakfast at breakfast time, open as they are from 7am weekdays, and I sent my colleagues Sam and Lesley to try. Sam’s report is below, and I urge you to get along there very soon. Moksha Caffe 45 York Place, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4GU mokshacaffe.com | Twitter: @mokshacaffe 01273 248890 Open seven days a week from 76 Mon to Fri, Sat & Sun 8 6
Moksha Breakfast I've always been partial to a full English and wasn't disappointed with Moksha's fabulous offering. The perfectly presented plate arrived festooned with delicious, high quality food Cumberland sausage and bacon, freerange eggs (poached to perfection), a grilled flat mushroom and beef tomato with homemade baked beans and hash browns. Having never tried homemade baked beans, I was in for a real treat. Moksha uses a combination of haricot and broad beans, covered in a rich, fresh tomato sauce. I also sampled classic Eggs Royal. Smoked salmon, freerange poached eggs covered in a delightfully lemony homemade hollandaise sauce, served on sourdough toast. For something different, the slightly spicy Huevos Rancheros (Ranch Eggs) is amazing. Freerange chorizo, black bean, sweetcorn and chipotle sauce is served on a crisp tortilla, then covered with melted cheese, fried eggs and an avocado salsa. Three delightful plates of food. > Exclusive UK concert sees Nigel Kennedy & band reinterpreting the music of Jimi Hendrix
I
’ll admit to initially being curious rather than excited when hearing about Nigel Kennedy performing the music of Jimi Hendrix at Brighton Dome. Would it simply sound like a covers band, but with the added novelty of the world’s biggest selling violinist instead of a guitarist? Further investigation and YouTube video perusing has made me more excited about the show however. Kennedy has reinterpreted Hendrix before (although this is an exclusive UK concert in his hometown) and the footage you can easily find online highlights how these improvisations or composed reinterpretations provide a distinctive musical experience in their own right. Kennedy explains that “what attracts me to Jimi Hendrix's music is the amazingly open mind that he had.... There were any number of influences that you can hear through his compositions; these ranged from rock, blues and Celtic through to trance and experimental styles....”. You can hear his passion for the openness and fluid musicianship of Hendrix’s work through his performances. Some might only think of the hits when considering Hendrix’s oeuvre but give lectric Ladyland’ a spin to remind yourself of the hypnotic and fairly experimental side of his music. Kennedy will be performing ‘1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)’ for example which is a lengthy, hazy number with striking stops and starts and an almost proglike ambiance. Kennedy will be joined by Robert Plant collaborator Doug Boyle, 18 year old guitar prodigy Julian Buschberger, vibraphonist Orphy Robinson and rhythm section Tomasz Kupiec and Adam Czerwinski. There will be acoustic and electric renditions so the concert should be varied and feature strong performances across the board. I’m looking forward to hearing some fresh reinterpretations of arguably the most unique guitarist of all time.

ith such luminaries as Kurt Cobain calling the band the best in the world, and Noel Gallagher saying they were the second best (after Oasis, of course), Teenage Fanclub have developed a deep and loyal fanbase over the years, releasing a string of critically lauded and commercially successful albums, culminating in ‘Songs From Northern Britain’, which reached number three in 1997. Last year Dave Grohl, exNirvana, asked the band to support his Foo Fighters at Old Trafford, eulogising about them on stage, too. Indeed, Teenage Fanclub's 1991 album ‘Bandwagonesque’ was voted best album of the year by Spin magazine, beating Nirvana's ‘Nevermind’ in the process.

Blake has been a resident in Canada for the last seven years, living with his Canadianborn wife, but he along with the other core members Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love continue their love affair with all things The Byrds and Big Star via new album ‘Here’, full of breezy numbers that ride along that west coast vibe with big guitars, strong melodies and gloriously melancholic harmonies. “I think it’s a reflection of us as people,” says Blake. “We are a fairly optimistic group of people. There's always a bit of pessimism, but I hope that the music and lyrics are a reflection of us and our personalities.” And it seems that despite a gap of six years between albums, the band are being warmly embraced once again. “It's going really well. It may be the case of absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or maybe it's people thinking, 'you know, these guys are getting on a bit, they may not be around much longer’." Concorde 2. BRIGHTON’S ARTY > Worth the wait
T
here are always three cheers at Arty Towers when a new Brighton gallery is announced. So great to hear that Art of Treason has opened its door on Gloucester Road and will be boosting the local art scene with work from the best cutting edge artists from Sussex and beyond.
“ Every surface is covered in drawings and paintings ” Owner Mark Jones is setting the bar high from the start. His launch show ‘The Glory Of Imperfection’ is by the inimitable Jim Sanders – the artist’s first solo exhibition in five years. This is a rare treat as Jim works obsessively, producing a phenomenal amount of work, but rarely releases anything for sale to the public. Having interviewed him a few years ago, we can testify that his house is truly a living art shrine with every surface covered in drawings, paintings, and various strange objects for work in progress. If you’ve never experienced ‘Outsider Art’, don’t www.artymagazines.com miss this opportunity. Until 10 December. @brightonsarty LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

CELEBCITY SHOPPING > ExBig Brother winner Pete Bennett is running a celebrity cleaning service in Brighton!

t’s time to get glam – party season is here. It all starts with Christmas work parties, filters out with present exchanging over drinks with friends and ends with New Year celebrations. Luckily Churchill Square is full of sparkle for him and for her but there are a few fashion commandments to keep in mind first…
Thou shalt not dress head to toe in glitter. Glitter is great, a personal favourite of mine anytime of year but add just a touch somewhere in your look – you don’t want to resemble a bauble or the Christmas Trees they hang from. Either choose one statement piece like a sparkly sweater or shoes, or introduce shimmer with makeup, a belt, or for the gents a sparkling tie, a twotone shimmering blazer or a jazzy velvet jacket which is a key fabric this season. Sparkle doesn’t have to mean River Island Velvet Jacket, £110 in your face, but it is definitely fun.
P
ut down your dusters and Dysons immediately, former Big Brother winner Pete Bennet wants to clean your house for you! He recently set up a home cleaning business in Brighton, called 'Celebriclean', ditching his party lifestyle in favour of establishing the unusual new business venture. The famous Tourette’s sufferer told The Daily Star in a recent interview: “I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and I’ll do any sort of cleaning job.” As a result of this statement, many fans have requested that he clean their houses in his underpants – or even naked. But he doesn’t mind them asking!
“ Many fans have requested that he
clean their houses in his underpants ”
An hour’s cleaning from Pete and an assistant costs £50 an hour, and £30 for carpet cleaning. The business has already received rave reviews on its Facebook page, Pete says the service will allow people to meet their favourite celebs “in a fun way… not stuck in a queue at a club” Speaking exclusively to Latest 7, he revealed: “I’m starting a UK cleaning tour at the beginning of 2017, where I’ll be picking up mystery celebs on the journey. I’m in talks with a big TV production company for a Celebriclean TV show, fingers crossed, we’re just waiting for the thumbs up!” A portion of Pete’s earnings will be donated to the Tourettes Action Charity www.celebriclean.com

Thou shalt not dress inappropriately for the weather. It is tempting to go skimpy for party season and why not? BUT please don’t forget that it is zero degrees out there and that backless floor length number may look better without a coat, but you won’t later on when you’re waiting for a taxi outside. Instead, make the essentials that keep you warm part of your entire look. Coats, capes, blanket wraps and blazers are all available with a touch of sparkle, metallic thread, bold colours and glamourous faux fur collars – all details that vamp it up. Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, Pull & Bear and River Island have some musthave ‘details’ Next Sequin Sweater, £46 in. For men, suits never fail to impress – just have more fun with your shirt and shoes by picking ones with a bold print.
“ It is tempting to go skimpy for party season and why not? ” Thou shalt not banish sparkle to the daytime only. This is your chance to shine day and night and is the perfect way to take you from office to party. Don’t keep the sequins just for parties – choose a sequin sweater and play it down with jeans and high tops. Next has some amazing ones in, including matte sequins that offer more ‘grown up glitter’. Jumpers with metallic thread are also an option, TOPSHOP and River Island are brimming. Glimmering diamante touches on everyday practical items such as beanie hats and belts are another great way to add a glow, and the latter works for guys too. Images: Next Sequin Sweater, £46. River Island Velvet Jacket, £110. Bethanie Lunn is Churchill Square’s Style Ambassador – blogging regularly at www.churchillsquare.com, hosting events and now offering Personal Shopping services. REVIEW

W
hen asked to recommend an opera as an introduction to the world of opera I would always recommend starting with Puccini's beautiful and moving La Boheme. It has the brilliant combination of a great story and lots of memorable tunes. It's probably the key to most successful musical theatre, whether it be an opera or a West End or Broadway hit. When Jonathan Larson decided to create a modern version of this classic he updated it to an age when consumption was no longer the dread disease it had once been and it had been replaced by AIDS. His characters were rock musicians and modern artists and the whole was set in poor bohemian New York setting. All this good, but would the score live up to the inspiration of La Boheme? The answer is yes. Two new productions can be seen in Sussex, the first at Brighton’s Old Market. This brand new production, marking the 20th Anniversary of the show’s debut, is produced by Bird Studios. Featuring a hugely talented young cast, the production is directed, staged and supervised by many of the creative faces that led the original West End production of the musical including Mia Bird (Maureen Original London Workshop Cast), Mykal Rand (Collins Original London Production and Resident

In the new year another 20th Anniversary production of Jonathan Larson’s ground breaking Pulitzer Prize and multi Tony Awardwinning musical comes to the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne. Larson’s musical won four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996. The show ran on Broadway for 12 years, from 1996 and premiered in London’s West End in 1998 at the Shaftesbury Theatre and was adapted into a film in 2005. Larson’s world is inhabited by a group of bohemian artists who struggle to maintain their friendships and their non conformist ideals in New York's East Village. Facing their problems head on, they make

personal selfdiscoveries and find what matters most. The poignancy of the story was heightened when Jonathan Larson died on 25 January 1996, the night before the show’s first offBroadway performance at New York Theatre Workshop. He never had the chance to see how his opus would become one of the alltime great musicals, loved by millions all over the world. The muchloved score features songs such as Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me, What You Own, One Song Glory, La Vie Bohème, Without You, I’ll Cover You, Out Tonight and I Should Tell You. The cast includes the brilliant Layton Williams (Bad Education, Billy Eilliot the Musical, Hairspray) and Lucie Jones (XFactor, Legally Blonde the Musical, Les Miserable) and Javar La’trial Parker (Showboat). Rent premiered exactly 100 years after La Bohème was first staged to the world, the parallels betweens the two are strong but Rent stands alone as a stunning work of modern musical theatre. ooks, books everywhere – even the set is magical, and that’s the least of the awe inspiring ways this production captivates you with. From aerial feats of childpropulsion to shadowpuppetry and of course the incredible Tim Minchinpenned score and lyrics, anything is possible in this anthesis to Disney saccharine. Most people are familiar with the storyline from Roald Dahl’s canon of clever children and repulsive adults. Matilda The Musical mixes mischief with cleverness, jawdroppingly tight choreography and smart alec lyrics, with a script to appeal to both adults and children (from the decidedly adultappealing Dennis Kelly responsible for C4’s dark drama Utopia) – it’s captivating from start to finish. Stand out performances came from the monstrous Miss Trunchbull (Craig Els), who terrified and enthralled with equal glee, and Ben Lewis’ Bruce – a fabulous turn when caught with rogue cake. Impressive and enjoyable in equal measure, no wonder there’s talk already for a film version. Cambridge Theatre, London, booking until October 2017, www.matildathemusical.com. Victoria Nangle

Whitehawk, Worthing, Lewes, Shoreham, Lancing, Peacehaven and Worthing United are all featured on the show, which will visit a different ground each week and bring you the best on the pitch action as well as postmatch reaction from the managers and players as well as getting the thoughts of the fans who are the lifeblood of our NonLeague clubs. We felt that a show entirely dedicated to NonLeague football is exactly what the channel needed. These local sides have been a huge part of Latest TV since its inception and with a growing hunger for local football in Sussex we wanted to showcase the best sides that the south coast has the offer. For anyone involved with their local club, to them it means the world, no matter how big or small that club may be, and we believe it's time that these sides were treated like they are the most important thing.

The Flash Sky1, 8pm You’d think someone surrounded by people with superpowers would be thrilled to bits to get a bit of the fab fizz for themselves.
