CAT TALES > An East Sussex rescue has saved the life of a loveable cat who is set to be a TV superstar!
S
ince setting up Catastrophes cat rescue in the ‘70s, Alan Knight OBE and Liz Varney, have rescued dozens of cats who were about to be put down or who could no longer be cared for by their owners. Janet is a special case. When the furry fouryearold feline came to the nokill sanctuary a few months ago, her jaw was fused shut. Thanks to demanding dental surgery she has been given a new lease of life and is set to star in More4’s Vet on the Hill. “Before her operation, Janet couldn’t clean her fur and we couldn’t clean her teeth, which caused big problems,” Alan said. “She was starting to get a mouth ulcer where her teeth were interlocking, which must have been terribly painful.”
“ When the furry fouryearold feline
came to the nokill sanctuary a few months ago, her jaw was fused shut ”
Janet’s surgery went ahead about a month ago, and was made possible by wellwishers who donated over £1,000 to the cause. Surgeons flew in from Spain to perform the procedure, which was described as: “worthwhile attempting, although it may be challenging” by Ronan Doyle, European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery at Davies, Herts.
The surgery was a huge success and Janet is now recovering in the company of the many other cats at the sanctuary’s cottage in Dallington, East Sussex. The affectionate white and grey cat is now a picture of health. Her distinctive tongue makes her a firm favourite among visitors and volunteers. “She used to drool all the time, and because she had to use her tongue to pick up food before her surgery, it’s grown stronger and longer,” said Alan, a purring Janet sitting in his lap. The sanctuary is home to misfit cats from as far afield as Saudi Arabia, and takes in feral cats as well as moggies with disabilities or temperamental problems. “We welcome cats with bad temperaments,” explains Liz. “It takes a great deal of patience and care for them to settle, but once they’re here they do tend to settle very quickly and form friendships easily. If they don’t, they’re allowed to be cross and grouchy here.” Catastrophes has proven to be so popular that the cottage is now at maximum catpacity, and Alan and Liz are busy preparing for the hectic Christmas season and for Janet’s TV debut. www.catastrophescats.org

THE CUTTING EDGE
Razor sharp styling at Cutter & Grinder
Latest 7’s Andrew Kay went along for a spot of tonsorial titivation
I
was 22 years old the first time I went to a professional hairdresser. I know it sounds unlikely but as a small child my father, who had cut hair under orders whilst doing his National Service, had always trimmed my unruly curls. Then, in my teens, I did what all teenage boys did in the late 1960s and grew it long. At 17 my art teacher cropped it all off, he asked and I said yes, I cannot remember why but I went from looking like a Marc Bolan to looking more like Diana Ross, an interesting transition. It was only after leaving art school that I ventured into a professional hairdressers and how I wished I had done it sooner. All those years missing out on that strangely intimate experience that can only be gained when putting your hair into the hands of someone you trust. Well the trust only comes on the completion of that cut but I was hooked on the whole thing and have been since. Now I not only enjoy going for a cut but also for a wet shave too,

and I’m not averse or ashamed of indulging in a little pampering too. But this time I needed a change, a big change from my rather long, wild and latterly unmanageable curls to something altogether sharper and easier to deal with. I had spotted Cutter & Grinder and had even popped in to buy some seriously strong hair dressing. I loved the place, it’s almost museum like inside, the walls lined with tonsorial clutter and ephemera and there are two of the finest looking barbers’ chairs I have ever seen. I made an appointment, early morning, to have my hair cut by owner Hossein. Hossein has that sharp contemporary look, the large groomed beard and sharp lined classic haircut that is timeless but bang on point when it comes to fashion. I knew that it would be less easy for him to give me exactly that as my hair is very thin (bald) on top now and of course he would have those curls to deal with. First off he complemented me on the

‘tache, hairdressers usually do as, even if I say it myself, it is a fine specimen. He then complemented me on the whiteness of my hair, it is now my natural colour, then after playing with it for some time he set about the cut. How short did I want it? I really wanted a difference so I said short. Out came the scissors and off he set, cutting my hair dry. This he explained helped him to see how it was shaping up. “That would be the curls then?” “Yes” he replied explaining that cutting curly hair was rather like topiary! I’ve often thought the same. The long white curls fell to the floor until it looked like a fleece, but in the mirror I could very soon see that what was left was taking on a rather impressive new look, sharp, clean lined and stylish. He gave my ‘tache a much needed trim too, a job that I find rather difficult to do myself, and after brushing me down and adding a spot of pommade I was done.
As important as it was for me to look good I desperately need a cut that was more manageable. This Hossein has achieved, and he has reduced my pommade bill by at least 90%! The whole thing was great and that is what I would like to really emphasise, go and make the most of the experience. This is no clipper bashing inandout job, far from it, Hossein and his team take their time making you feel valued, finding out what you really want and giving great advice. Next time I will go the whole way and have a shave too. Oh yes, I almost forgot, he also sharpens knives so I will take some along and avail myself of that service too. All in all an ideal place for a food loving, hair cut and shave fan like me! yperbole – exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.” There is too much hyperbole in my media streams. I mean, it’s literally going to make my brain explode. Did you see what I did there? I added my own hyperbole to the tirade that slips through, from social media, to Saturday night television, and on to the absolutes being decried about people in the news fringes with opposing views. He voted that?! He must be a racist and a fascist! None of which is very conducive to moving forward in the spirit of compromise and understanding and people not wanting to knock each others’ blocks off.
“ Having a couple of differences shouldn’t be lines drawn in the sand box ” The first time it really came to my attention was a few years back when Simon Cowell proclaimed that he believed a thing “110 per cent”. You can’t do that. One hundred per cent is the full amount that you can believe anything and then it’s with a vitriolic fervour of a zealot. It’s nice that you think that your talent competition hopeful will have a promising career, and I’m not detracting from the fact that you have a full and expansive career in the music industry, Simon – but you just can’t believe in anything or anyone more that one hundred per cent. It’s nuts. I’m sure it was around before then, it’s not like Saturday early evening telly is known as a place for trailblazers, but from then people have been “literally” going to pieces, talking in absolutes online, and generally preparing for all out war. I am not “literally” going to pieces. I am “literally” in one piece, sitting on a chair and typing this. I do not believe that simply because a member of my family voted differently from the way I did during the referendum that I shouldn’t talk to them or that I have nothing in common with them. This isn’t high school where lines were drawn if you liked Take That instead of Westlife, Bros instead of Brother Beyond, The Beatles instead of The Stones. Having a couple of differences shouldn’t be lines drawn in the sand box. It’s why we go on holiday. Or has that not occurred to anyone? How can resolutions be found without engagement? And how can maths be taught without proper respect for one hundred per cent? Unless we’re talking about statistics of course... 8 | LATEST 7

ast week I spent a fun evening watching Latest Bill's film of the extraordinary Lynn Ruth Miller, the octogenarian comedian, raconteur and burlesque artiste, yes you read that right. And after the screening I interviewed them, asking them about what it is that drives them on. Funnily enough most of the things I wanted to ask them were things that I could easily ask myself, what is it that drives me forward? Well a week ago I realised what it is.
“ Take a look on Amazon Prime and enjoy the joy of chefs ” Three years ago I started a project called International Chef Exchange. It started in Maastricht when I met an extraordinary chef called Audrey Eussen. She was quite brilliant and sparked in me an idea to bring her to Brighton in an exchange project. When I got back I put the wheels in motion with the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival and I engaged with the restaurant at Drakes Hotel who became the most valuable partners in setting the project on its course. I then went to Bill Smith, we had launched Latest TV at that point, and asked if I could have a camera crew to film it. It was the start of an incredible journey that has taken me around the world meeting amazing chefs and food and drink producers. It also turned me into a TV maker. When I started I was 57 and a novice. Now I am 60 and although I would never claim to be an expert I feel that I have learnt so much – and there is the answer, that it was drives me on. There is another driving force of course and that is recognition, who amongst us does not like to be recognised for their achievements? When the series was finished it was gratifying to hear from friends and strangers alike that they had enjoyed the programmes. Now that recognition has reached a new level as International Chef Exchange is on Amazon Prime, yes you read that right, my programme has gone global and is already being seen by a huge and new audience. They have declared it to be the very opposite of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Hell, a programme I love by the way. It is certainly about food passion and is not car crash TV, far from it. That said there are disasters and lots of laughs along the way. If you missed it on Latest TV then take a look on Amazon Prime and enjoy the joy of chefs! RUSSELL KANE > Awardwinning comedian, novelist, YouTube sensation – Russell Kane talks literacy, fatherhood, unfulfilled ambitions and farts with Victoria Nangle Hello Russell, how are you today? Buzzing like a bee on a Berocca! I like the title of your new show – ‘Right Man, Wrong Age’. How is it, do you think, that such a fuss has ended up being made about what your own age actually is? In the end… my biggest discovery has been the maturity and age are not linked (farts and laughs). Do you have a favourite age you remember being in your life so far – and what is it that makes you remember it so fondly? 30. Finally the adolescent screaming hormones began to chill out. At 35, they started again though… You seem to be one of the busiest performers in comedy – touring, television, podcast appearances, YouTube videos, author – is there anything you’d like to do that you haven’t found the time for yet? Porn. And opening a restaurant. Your videos have had a phenomenal reception. I heard you say to Richard Herring that it takes you an hour to make each one, including editing. How important do you think it is to be techno savvy as a comedian? I never thought it before, but to be able to get one’s stand up out there – directly. It’s been a game changer for me. You’ve spoken a lot about your relationship with your father. Has he featured in your own decisions in how you want your relationship to develop with your own daughter? Very much so. I’m trying to be a moaning old bellend. An old crone comes up to you after a gig with a bag of shiny
apples she says are for her stepdaughter – very suspicious – and offers you three wishes. What do you wish for? Apart from 10 wishes? I would wish for: 1) Very long life and happiness for me and my immediate family. 2) Lottery numbers 3) Global peace and prosperity
I enjoyed seeing you on TV encouraging literacy recently. What are you reading at the moment, and what book do you like to give to other people? Currently reading 'The Collected Ghost Stories of E. F. Benson' – after Halloween.
Your date in Brighton is near the end of your tour. What are you looking forward to most about coming to our seaside home? Just that room… it’s one of the best in the country. With 1700 people in it it’s magical.
“ Finally the adolescent screaming
hormones began to chill out. At 35, they started again though… ”
Madame Bovary is my favourite novel of all time.
And then it’s Christmas after the tour! Any idea what you’d like Santa to leave you under the tree? A bottle of vodka and Lindsey. And some of her hot mates. And a hot tub. I’m kidding! Chill out…. he ohso closetobeingthepin upboy of folk music, Devon's Seth Lakeman has come a long way since his album of 2004, ‘Kitty Jay’, was released on a minuscule £300 budget, but to much acclaim. Recorded in his kitchen (as was his 2002 debut, ‘The Punch Bowl’), it went on to be nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. It didn't win, of course, but the Mercury people knew that here was something a

to a major label, and that included Seth, as well as his two brothers, Sean and Sam, and a very young Kate Rusby. ‘Kitty Jay’ also established Lakeman's writing style, his songs speaking of the ancient, such is their raw, visceral and simplistic hues and tones. But while his albums normally consist of all original compositions, his recent album ‘Ballads of the Broken Few’ has reached out to the deep traditional songbook of the UK and America, bringing back to life four songs that he has stamped in his idiosyncratic style, producing updated versions that sit snugly with seven originals. With ‘Ballads of the Broken Few’ he has collaborated with the intuitive female vocal trio Wildwood Kin, made up of two sisters, Emilie and Beth Key, and their cousin Meghann Loney; their angelically lush tones contrasting with the more gritty voice of Lakeman. Lakeman's experimental and adventurous bearing has seen him go to unusual places to record in the past. He’s used a disused copper mine and cooperage (Tales From The Barrelhouse), whilst utilising loads of found instruments there including anvils, whilst his last album, Word of Mouth, was recorded in a Cornish church. For ‘Ballads of the Broken Few’, Lakeman, Wildwood Trio and producer Ethan Johns went to a great hall of a Jacobean Manor House, in effect delivering a rustic and rootsy contrast to the opulence of the setting. JOHN WILSON > Ranging from Gone With The Wind to Star Wars, John Wilson talks to Joe Fuller about what to expect from his ‘Music from the Movies’ Brighton Dome concert What is it about film scores that reaches a wider audience than a lot of other classical music? Is it familiarity, joviality or length for example? We play very few film scores in the JWO – probably only a dozen or so. The core of our repertoire has always been song – either from Broadway or the Hollywood film musicals. That said, our current tour programme contains a number of what you might call ‘classic' films scores from the Golden Age (Korngold, Waxman etc) which are immediately attractive and engaging and full of good tunes – that may account for their popularity.
I saw you at the Proms last year performing Frank Sinatra and other swing music with Seth MacFarlane. The sharpness and volume of the brass live really opened my ears as to how great the music can be. Is there anything particular in music from the movies that a live orchestra can illuminate or enliven?
Do you see your recordings and concerts as a way of bridging the pop/classical divide? No, not at all. I record a Cole Porter song in much the same way I’d record some Elgar or Vaughan Williams. It’s all real music – the only thing that separates the genres is the style.
There is nothing quite like the thrill of hearing an orchestra playing live. Come to our concert!
What is it that drew you to including a jazz band in the orchestra rather than sticking to a traditional setup? The repertoire demands this – all of the Golden Age film musicals require a compliment of saxophones, dance band brass and rhythm instruments.
“ Anyone can come to our concerts – there is absolutely no age limit and no etiquette ”
What is it like conducting an orchestra of 80 players? Exhilarating, uplifting, exhausting.
I attended a scifi film score evening put on the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and was happy to see how much more mixed the crowd was agewise. Are children encouraged to attend your concerts? Would you suggest a minimum age?
Anyone can come to our concerts – there is absolutely no age limit and no etiquette. Just turn up, turn your phone off and listen. What can we expect from the Brighton concert? Can you give us an idea of some of the Hollywood film scores and Oscar winning songs that you’ll be performing? A very wide range of scores and songs from a fifty year period – 1930s to 1980s – as diverse as our suite from the Tom and Jerry cartoons, Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, songs from Funny Girl, Gigi etc. It’s a long old list…! > Food For Friends
I
n the recent Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival Awards, Food For Friends won the bronze award, a fine accolade for a restaurant that over the last few years I have come to respect. Bronze is good when you see who the public voted had pitted them against and it was certainly enough to remind me how good my last meal had been there. So with Mr F we decided to drop in and have a look at some of the new dishes that have been put on the menu as we head into the festive season. I was having a tough day, sprained ankle, late taxi, you know the kind of thing. So when our waiter waved the cocktail menu under my nose I was there and before very long drinking an excellent sour plum fairy, very appropriate I thought given my mood. The mood was soon to lift though as the drink was good, as were the nuts and seeds that came with them dressed in a mix of pomegranate molasses and Tamara. We found the Christmas dishes on the set dinner menu and tempting as they were Mr F chose his starter from the a la carte selection, a stuffed courgette flower. When it arrived I looked on with envy as he cut open the delicate flowers and a mixture of creamy soft cheeses oozed out. It looked wonderful and he declared it to be very tasty too.
“ This was the best pudding I have
tasted in some time, truly delicious ”
My starter of chestnut, parsnip and cumin rosti was excellent too, the rosti a perfectly seasoned mix of vegetable and nuts and the outsides wonderfully crisp. There was a creamy dressing and a sharp cranberry compote too and the addition of crispy kale added a wonderful bitter note against the sweet flavours and excellent texture too. If I had one complaint, and this will sound mean and lots of you will see it as a plus, it was just a bit too big. I would have been satisfied to dine on the dish as a main course. That's just me and I should never criticise hearty and generous dishes really. For his main course Mr F chose Jerusalem artichoke fritters with caramelised turnip gyoza, celeriac and pistachio purée, braised leeks and spiced plum sauce. He relished the dish and kept telling me about the component parts as he crossed the plate from ingredient to ingredient. I have to say it looked very good and the presentation was very stylish indeed. My main course was an easy choice as I love king oyster mushrooms. These were delivered with chestnut and walnut rissole LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
cakes, saffron mash and a rich red wine and cranberry jus. The mushrooms were expertly cooked, grilled to perfection so that the exteriors were crisp and savoury but inside remained sweet and soft. The chestnut and walnut rissole cakes reminded me of Lebanese kibbi which is a very good thing and I absolutely loved the saffron mash which was perfectly made and judiciously seasoned with the musky saffron. The presence of cranberry added a good sour note but I felt that I had already had that with my rosti, which was a shame, but neither wrong or a disaster. We drank a bottle of their house white which is decent, as of course it should be, and sensibly priced in a city where some house wines are commanding rather silly prices. And although we were both rather full, I pointed out to Mr F that this was after all work and not fun, haha. So desserts were ordered. Mr F chose the spiced poached pear with chocolate cointreau mousse, orange powder and a flax and chia seed snap and once again the presentation was first class, the food here is certainly very stylish. It also eats well as Mr F was pleased to announce and he made light work of his pud. I chose the maple and muscovado parfait with a caramelised pistachio crumb and a cardamom and clementine sorbet. I love desserts and I really loved this, it was an extraordinarily good pud, a creamy parfait dotted with crisp caramel pieces, with the scented delight of maple and the almost burnt sugar flavour of the muscavado, the crumb beneath added a brilliant textural contrast too. But the real delight was the sorbet which was packed with bitter sweet notes that balanced the rich and creamy parfait. I was already full, I should have stopped at the main – but I didn't and I am very glad I didn't. This was the best pudding I have tasted in some time, truly delicious. Did I mention that Food For Friends is vegetarian? No? Well no need really, it is great on any level, it just doesn't serve meat or fish! STAGE > Sunny Afternoon heads to Brighton
T
he Theatre Royal Brighton has given up panto and in its place brought in a far more adult entertainment for the festive season, a brave but brilliant idea. This year it is Sunny Afternoon, the Kinks musical, so we went up to London to catch the new cast in rehearsal and see the West End production. Firstly let’s talk about the show. Stages have been littered with ‘Jukebox Musicals’ for years now. Strings of pop hits tenuously attached to an often lame plot. Sunny Afternoon is no such show! This is a tightly scripted drama about The Kinks and their early career, the successes and the disasters and it has been penned by the man himself, Ray Davies. It’s a frank and honest tale, warts and all, in which he spares nothing. Of course it is peppered with their hits which range from moving ballads to cheesy pop. Rehearsals were intense, the cast are not simply playing the roles, they are playing all of the instruments too, every one of them, singing, dancing, acting and playing quadruple threats as they say in the business – and there’s not a weak one amongst them. Over coffee we got to meet members of the new cast bringing the show to Brighton. They are out of breath from the stunning number they have just performed for us but eager to talk about their show and how much they love it. One of the new members,

“ The joy of
fabulous pop classics ”
Mark Newnham, is a local boy who studied at Steyning Grammar school and then on to BIMM, Brighton’s very successful modern music academy. “I seem to have found a little niche in playing 60s rock stars, I’ve done quite a few.” I asked if it is interesting as a performer to embrace the musical style of the sixties, it is a sound that they slavishly achieve in their performance. “I was a fan of 60s music anyway, bands like The Zombies and The Beatles and of course The Kinks, they are some of my favourite bands, that is my family’s influence and especially my mum and dad.” Andrew Gallo has just played a mind blowing drum solo in the role of Mick Avory. I asked when he started to play drums. “I was quite young, about 12, and I backed away from playing the piano which I now really regret. Finally I persuaded my parents to buy me a kit, which they installed beneath our sitting room, a big mistake. I started
playing in rock and punk bands but moved on to playing jazz and swing.” It’s a very flamboyant performance that he has just given. “That actually comes from my time playing in school orchestras where the other musicians would be playing seriously and I would be sat at the timpani giving it all this…” and he starts to flail and thrash his arms, a real showman. “It came from having to sit quietly for 48 bars before getting to do something.” How did the drumming lead on to acting? “Well I started as a choir boy and we sang psalms, a few bars of melody repeated over and over and the choir master said that it was not about that melody but about the words, read those words, think about it. Words inform how you perform. At school I fell in love with Shakespeare
and at Liverpool I studied straight acting, so now it is great to bring the two together, my musicianship and my acting.” Is Mick Avory still alive, have you seen him perform? “He is and he still plays a lot of gigs around London and I’ve watched a lot of footage of him performing, I really want to see him live.” How daunting is it to go on stage and perform the role of someone who is still alive? “It has to be a mix of a portrait and an interpretation. There has to be a little of me in my performance and this is not Stars in Their Eyes either! You doff your cap to the real person of course but there has to be artistry.” There were of course tensions within The Kinks, how difficult is it to get that across? Mark Newhnam who plays Ray Davies’ younger brother Dave replies. “It’s great for me because there are so many problems and fights between them and Dave is such a flamboyant character, it’s great fun but it has to be very precisely played.” These guys are summing up what it is that lifts Sunny Afternoon above the ordinary. It’s real theatre with a strong script and a gripping story, one filled with anger and sadness but also with humour and of course the joy of fabulous pop classics – delivered so well – real entertainment. One of Brighton’s brightest creative sparks Kellie Miller has brought together an intriguing trio of artists for her Winter Exhibition in the South Lanes. Rock pool paintings by Trevor Scobie capture moments of the natural world, while George Antoni’s abstract paintings work with themes of beauty in deterioration. Complementing the group are land and seainspired ceramics vessels by Paul Wearing. And, of course, there’s plenty more to delight the eye from Kellie Miller Arts’ resident artists. Until 12 December. www.artymagazines.com Twitter @brightonsarty

THURSDAY 1 The UK’s Strongest Man 2016 – Final Channel Five, 7pm It’s a time-honoured tradition that Christmas includes the world competition to find out who’s the strongest man alive, with all manner of ingenious trials and challenges. Marking the start of the festive month, tune in to the final of the UK’s Strongest Man 2016 to see who will represent.
The Apprentice BBC1, 9pm Lord Sugar likes to keep an eye on the cutting edge technology – you may not be queuing up to buy an Amstrad this Crimbo, but you can bet he’s got fingers in plenty of pies that are flying off the shop shelves – hence this foray into virtual reality games. No pressure though candidates, you’ve only got to launch at Comic Con.
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow Sky1, 8pm Earthquakes are so passé in superhero-land. We’ve even got them in the Midlands, so despite the destruction and all round “it’s-the-actual-Earth-having-ashufty-with-her-undergarments!” Legends Of Tomorrow pull out the trump of experiencing a timequake, which can be traced back to the White House. Hmm.
