WINTRY

AFTERNOON

> Theatre Royal Brighton’s Christmas show this year will be Sunny Afternoon, recipient of four awards at the 2015 Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music

T

he multiaward winning West End musical Sunny Afternoon will open on Tuesday 13 December 2016 and run till Saturday 31 December 2016. Featuring some of The Kinks’ best loved songs, including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset, All Day and All of the Night and Lola, Sunny Afternoon tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks. The Kinks exploded onto the ‘60s music scene with a raw energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next?

Set against the backdrop of a Britain caught midswing between the conservative ‘50s and riotous ‘60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations. Sunny Afternoon is the perfect show for Brighton this Christmas. Tickets are selling fast so do not delay. Best availability is from 19 December onwards and there are two midweek matinees per week throughout the run. he other day I was sitting on a train – that was running on time! – on my way to Horsham to meet my aunt for lunch. We do this from time to time – she gets her hair done and then we meet up and catch up before having a quick wander around the shops and then a slap up lunch. It was that horrid torrential rainy weekend, so I was wrapped up warm with a waterproof anorak and my nice big scarf. You know the kind of thing, where you tuck it into your jacket and then zip the jacket up and end up with a chest that would do Bluto from spinacheating cartoon ‘Popeye’ proud.

“ Firstly: I’d better take my scarf off when I arrive at the restaurant ” Anyway, I started settling in to a bit of food fantasy about what I might be eating for lunch, and was surprised to find that the first thing I thought of was how much gravy I might spill on my scarf if I wasn’t careful. It’s like wrapping up warm also provided me with a bib. Which set my mind to thinking... Firstly; I’d better take my scarf off when I arrive at the restaurant – my mama didn’t raise no messy fool. And secondly; what kind of a state did Elizabethan ruffs get into back in the day?! Those Tudors and the like were not known for holding back – just look at Elizabeth’s dad, Henry VIII! Not that I’m knocking a bit of decadence, but with their reputed aversion to frequent washing too, those ruffs must’ve been in a right state! Either that or they had the steadiest soup spoons in the land. Now, I’ve done no research into this whatsoever, but can I just share how much fun I had for five minutes expanding and questioning my timetravelling daydream. I was gazing out of the window, watching the world flash by, occasionally getting disproportionately happy about spotting a cow or some other livestock in a field, and my mind wandered. Which was a treat I’d forgotten about. Usually I have a book, I have a phone, I have a friend to talk to – I don’t know about you but I am spoilt for choice when it comes to a bit of brain stimulus. When I get ill my marker for when I’m starting to get better is when I get to the point of being bored. It means my brain wants to go outside again. But I would like to endorse wholeheartedly the wonders of wondering. It can be such ridiculous fun. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

t's confession time. On November the 29th I ate my first mince pie of the festive season. I know, just a few days too soon, a rule of my own making I confess, but one I had hope to stick too. I'm no Christmas curmudgeon, no bah humbug monger, not I. I love Christmas in all its gaudy glory, really I do. But I also love mince pies and being a man of more than ample waist I was hoping to moderate my intake of these delights until December had started. No such luck, or should I say restraint. They were there on the website as I was doing my online Ocado shop, dangled temptingly in front of me, pimped even. I succumbed. The night before I had ventured into town on my slowly mending ankle and having disembarked the bus I stood in wonderment looking at the North Street Christmas lights for the first time. I'd read various people's thoughts online but reserved my judgement until I had seen them for real. Well I'm pleased to report that I was amazed, amazed that so many of you do not like them. Really? I love them, I love the fun of them, the silliness, the huge cheery statements. I even love the fact that if you put yourself on the south side of the street and look west from certain points the "T" in TWINKLE is obscured, leaving just WINKLE and behind that the word FAIRY – it's just so Brighton! Anyway, heartened by the spectacle of North Street and the twinkling prettiness of East Street I went about my business knowing that the very next morning the raspberry Ocado van would be delivering my first instalment of edible festive cheer. I woke early, answered some email, showered and prepared for the groceries to arrive, mainly I hasten to add, things for my cat Willow. There were seven bags in total and in the last one I found the mince pies. I made coffee, settled in my Eames lounger, and took my first bite. It was good, not as good as mum's, not as good as mine dare I say, but if I make them at home then I have the temptation of two dozen deadly fattening pies and not just six. There were five left, and I sealed the box up and placed it in my biscuit tin for safe keeping. It's December now, the gloves are off, and it's open season for mince pies, cheese footballs and advocaat snowballs – hooray!

STAGE > Let them hear Kate

B

righton will get to see plenty of Kate Tempest next May. She has been named Guest Artistic Director for next year's Brighton Festival. A handson job, it will enable her to curate artists and acts she believes in. Only 30, Tempest’s list of achievements are already extraordinary: Mercury Prize nominee for her debut album ‘Everybody Down’, Ted Hughes award winner for Brand New Ancients, writer of several plays including ‘Wasted’, ‘Glasshouse’ and ‘Hopelessly’; and acclaimed novelist with the multi generational tale of drugs, desire and belonging, ‘The Bricks That Built The Houses’. But it is her music that she is best known for. She has a long history of performing at open mics, spoken word events and with bands, all of which prepared her for ‘Everybody Down’, released to much acclaim in 2014. It was a brilliantly conceived collection of narrative tracks that married her traditional poetry craft, her skilful and resonating spoken metre, with the kinetic agitation of hiphop and urban electro beats courtesy of Dan Carey. With that album she spoke from the heart and with a great deal of courage about everyday tales of poverty, class, consumerism and even simple everyday living – at times drawing on mythology and holistic philosophy to tie the individual narratives into a cohesive whole, with socio political issues subtly woven

into the fabric of her characters’ lives. She's also very sharp and funny with it.

“ The

vulnerabilities of these characters are completely open ”

A couple of months ago, she released her second album, ‘Let Them Eat Chaos’, also made with Dan Carey. A continuation of ‘Everybody Down’, Tempest delved deeper into her thoughts on the universe and everything: each individual's place within it and the interconnectivity between them and all things. It’s a collection of songs centring around an apocalyptic storm,

that ultimately pulls together the lives of seven seemingly unconnected individuals, living on the same anonymous street in London. It details their lives at 4.18am. "What is important about this album is that it is not necessarily that it's set in that particular place, but this idea that with each individual's private moments there is much more commonality between them than they feel in their isolation. When they are brought out of that they realise they are part of something bigger than themselves." Why did she choose that particular time, 4.18am? "I suppose because the vast majority of people are sound asleep, the question of who is awake at that time is quite an interesting one for me. If these people had no pressing concerns they probably would have been sleeping soundly. It

just happens that they are awake at this very particular time of the morning, which is not yet dawn, not quite night anymore. It's a very strange time, this 4am time. And there's something I'm interested in about before the time belongs to your employer or your family, or your partner. “So, the vulnerabilities of all these characters are completely open. And that cyclical, repetitive nature of thought at that time, the kind of insomniac’s hour, when you can't quite sleep and your thoughts are not doing what you want them to do, lends themselves quite well to the rhythms of song cycles and rapping and the poetics of thought.” And so to Brighton, where she will be spending much of her time in the lead up to the 2017 Brighton Festival in May. I tell her that the social media feeds were buzzing with excitement when it was recently announced that she was going to be the Guest Artistic Director. “That's good to know! I do have a real affinity with Brighton. I've been going down to Brighton since I was two or three years old. “I'm really excited by the festival because it feels like such an important opportunity to be able to immerse myself in the arts, in what I love. And to be given an opportunity to think about how to broaden the scope of the festival a little bit, and invite some people to perform who probably may not have been invited had it not been me who gets to do the inviting,” she laughs. Friday 9 Dec, All Saints Church. SOLD OUT Jeff Hemmings

SUNDAY 11 Planet Earth II BBC1, 8pm All this nature stuff, it would seem that if we keep building over the nature-land that some of the nature might actually still be there despite the push. Who knew? Well, what with there being a finite amount of space, it’s hardly surprising the edge is blurring. Leopards in Mumbai and falcons in New York. Marvellous.

The X Factor Results ITV1, 8pm One last result, after all the duets, the hearts broken, the passive aggressive judging – after months of searching and voting tonight we’ll find out who the winner of the life-changing record contract is. And Dermot will hold their hand as it shakes and the confetti falls from the ceiling on them in sparkles.

Rosemary And Thyme ITV3, 8pm We all became aware of the dangers of dog-walking in the woods with the popularity of Crimewatch – but who knew that professional gardening would encounter so much murder and bloodshed? It’s a dangerous lightentertainment early evening world. This week they’re fixing a walled garden with some inmates.
