EDITOR B
righton is inescapably brilliant: a luminous centre of culture, food, nightlife, shopping and other tantalising prospects. As the editor of Latest 7 & Homes, I'm happy to be helping you pick what to go to, where to live, telling you what's going on in the city and lots of other bits. I'm a culture geek and have had the pleasure of seeing hundreds of shows. I derive real joy (hard to imagine by some who might see me as a bemused, contemplative sort of person but I promise there is joy in there) from sharing good things with good people. A great night out is something to savour: I vividly recall my first ever opera (Britten's elegiac Turn of The Screw at Glyndebourne), some startling dance at the Dome (Hofesh Shechter's barbarians), my first ever gig (Madness at the Brighton Centre), a Back To The Future marathon at the Duke of York's for my birthday (quick snooze allowed in the second one), thoughtful characterdriven scifi (Pioneer at the Old Market), Spymonkey's sublime anarchy at Theatre Royal (The Complete Deaths), Animal Collective playing Merriweather Post Pavilion at Concorde 2, and the honed comedy of Richard Herring at Komedia. I could go on and on and on and on but I shan't. The point of the selfindulgent, nostalgic list above is to emphasise the breadth of things on offer in and around Brighton, and at generous prices too. Tickets for all of the shows above were affordable (Glyndebourne was £20 for example) and I'm keen to highlight good value for money when I can. The arts shouldn't be considered expensive, esoteric, distant, lofty, pompous or aloof. There is something for everyone here and we're going to help you find what that something is.

> Top winter tips from Bone Idol
D
ays may be getting longer but winter is far from over. Here are our tips on keeping your pooch in tip top condition.
• Brushing Regularly brushing – short or long haired breeds – helps keep the mats at bay, promotes coat regrowth and keeps the skin healthy. • Bathing Keeping your dog clean is a great way to keep a look out for sores in the skin and lumps or swellings. With the rise of ‘Alabama Rot’ the best advice is to remove any woodland mud from the coat and skin of your dogs after their walks. • Paw and nose care There is a lot of salt about in winter. Be sure to check your dog’s pads and nose for dryness and cracks. Use a balm to help keep them just the way nature intended. 4 | LATEST 7
• Keep warm & be noticed While dogs have their own fur coats it’s not always enough. A coat or jumper can be just the ticket for keeping them cosy. LED collars or lights and reflective elements to collars, harnesses and leads will ensure your dog is noticed on dark evening walks. • Eat well Just like us, a balanced diet goes a long way. Feeding a complete meal is a great step in keeping healthy this winter. Winter collection: At Bone Idol the ‘Winter 2017’ collection is in. Our Bobby ranges are designed in Paris and feature functionality blended with great design and detail. Coats and jumpers are inspired by different themes and have a host of practical features, while beautifully soft lamb’s leather and Swarovski crystals decorate leads and collars in a range of colours. @latestvicky
canon of knowledge is an interesting thing. I liked that advert for a particular cable company that came on the TV in November. It proclaimed that a group of children held the power, because they knew how to programme the digiboxes, how to find the box sets, and that last episode you’d recorded but didn’t know where it had been saved. And this is their canon of knowledge. Equally, I have been spending time with a septuagenarian friend who is frequently blown away by the amount of facts I just don’t know. Things that were a stalwart of his own education – like British history, basic British geography, and words that go in one of my ears and out the other with alarming speed all bowl him over at my ignorance. And yet, at the same time I am frequently baggsied to join quiz teams – so I must be doing something right.
“ I have only the vaguest of ideas where Manchester is on a map ” Trends in education ebb and flow. I went to a school that focussed on the arts and learning by questioning rather than by rote. Subsequently, I buy most of the things I need when popping over The Channel with my 25yearold GCSE French, and am happy to have a punt at communicating even if my grammar proves a bit dodgy. But I have only the vaguest of ideas where Manchester is on a map of Great Britain. I think the thing is to keep learning from each other. If I want my nephew, who can crack the security on my iPhone in a heartbeat, to listen to the wisdom I’ve got to impart – I probably ought to listen to the things he’s just learned at school that day too. Chances are, some of what he’s learned will be fresh news to me. I surprised my older friend the other day by commenting that an idea we had been discussing was ‘oxymoronic’. Here was a glimpse of where our educations intersected, learning words that are a bit fascinating with their many syllables and contrastingly simple meanings. (Definition – oxymoron is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect. The common oxymoron phrase is a combination of an adjective proceeded by a noun with contrasting meanings, e.g. “cruel kindness” or “living death”.) Suddenly our knowledge was in sync. Which was nice. And then we were back to learning from each other. Which was also a bit wondrous. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

ello. Are you still there, survived the revels of the festive season? Yes? Good, me too, which is a blessing as 2017 promises to be a big one for me, a real challenge. Not that 2014, 2015 and 2016 have not been a challenge – on almost every level. Since the boss, Latest Bill called me up and said we were about to create a TV station it's been challenge upon challenge. Of course those of you know know me well will realise that I thrive on challenge and always have. A few years ago I worked out something key to the way I approach life. I am a yeasayer and not a naysayer. I prefer to say yes and see where it takes me. I can almost hear some of you shivering at the very idea, but I promise that on the whole this policy has worked for me. Saying yes has meant that I have had some incredible experiences over the years, things that, had I said no, I would really regret having missed and Latest TV has provided some of the most memorable moments. There have been regrets in my life too, I would be a fool to deny that and there are plenty of you out there who I am sure would be very fast to point them out. On a purely personal level I would like to say that for all my failed relationships there were many good times that in hindsight far outshine the weight of failure when things went wrong. A happy new year and sparkling future to all of you, you know who you are. As for me, well Latest Bill has done the usual and set me a whole load of new challenges, challenges that will see me on Latest TV even more often than in the last two years – if that is possible. I am delighted that, with my colleague and friend Sophie Cook, I will be heading up our new projects LGBT+ TV. Sophie is making a whole load of new shows and so am I. Between us we will be presenting the LGBT Papers in alternative weeks and in the opposite week we will take turns presenting The Vote – with of course a slant towards LGBT news, not just from Brighton and Hove but from around the world. I will also be presenting my own chat show, AK Soufflé, and I cannot wait to get some of the amazing people that I have met over the years onto the set to talk about the highs and perhaps some of the lows of their lives – but with the emphasis on fun always. We launch in early February with an hour of programming every day to start but watch this space, LGBT+ TV plans to be big!

Dines Out
> The year ahead
A
t the end of last year I looked back at what that year had held for we food lovers, and there was much that is good. To be honest, here in Brighton & Hove we are pretty lucky to have such a wide range of food and drink choices. On my travels I sometimes despair at other British cities where there are so few choices and so many of them are those all too familiar chains. Not that I have anything against the better chains, they offer value, reliability and comforting familiarity. How often have I drifted into a Pizza Express
“ Will dining in be the new dining out? Not with so much local talent to devour and enjoy! ”
knowing that my American Hot with extra capers will hit exactly the right spot? Too many times to number. I am also a fan of Carluccio's and when in doubt when out and about will seek the comfort of their tasty and satisfying menu. Good chains are the no risk option when out and about unarmed of local intelligence. Here in this city by the sea we have become champions of the independent business in so many fields, from estate agents (turn the mag over) to restaurants and I suspect few other cities or towns of a similar size (we should not lose sight of just how small Brighton & Hove is) can boast as many independent restaurants. It is without doubt the reason that we have become a major culinary destination for visiting food lovers and dining in many of our most noted restaurants we should not be surprised if the people at the next table have travelled here to enjoy that experience, not just from the UK but from around the globe. Given all of this what might we expect in the year ahead? For me LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
my first major food event will be the first of the year's Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. Already planned is another epic festival including Brighton Cocktail Week; chef exchanges with St Lucia, Guernsey, Gibraltar and Holland; a Pommery Champagne dinner; German wine dinner at the Chilli Pickle with Johannishof winery; Sussex wine bus tour; Food Lab at 64 Degrees and lots more including the epic free entry Sussex & The World Weekend on Brighton's seafront Hove Lawns on Saturday 27 to bank holiday Monday 29 May. Keep an eye on the festival's Facebook page over the next few weeks for more info and events and details of how to book tickets to those events. And please note that our festival on Hove Lawns is free entry unlike other food festivals that charge for entry. I will certainly be there for my 12th year hosting the live food stage in the marquee and already we are talking to the city's best chefs about them coming along and sharing their kitchen secrets, and again it's free entry. As you have just read our International chef exchange project continues and although I am not currently filming them you can now watch International Chef Exchange, the Latest TV series on Amazon Prime, six episodes and there is one further episode filmed in Vancouver and featuring Brighton's world acclaimed restaurant Terre à Terre in all its gastronomic glory. I will still be on your screens on Freeview channel 7 and Virgin 159 and I will be hosting a new chat show called AK Soufflè as part of our brand new LGBT+ channel. Any other predictions? Well I foresee that there will be lots more pop up events across the city as young chefs seek that opportunity to prove themselves and that supper clubs will go from strength to strength too. I also think that we will be dining in and extending our home cooking skills, after all, with so much great local produce now available who would not want to dive in and entertain chez nous. Will dining in be the new dining out? Not with so much local talent to devour and enjoy! LATEST 7 | 11

STAGE > Gaslight
> Holiday on Ice: Believe
O
ne of the greatest thrillers of all time, Gaslight, returns to UK theatres starring the celebrated stage and television actress Kara Tointon. Kara plays Bella Manningham, memorably portrayed by Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman in the classic 1944 film adaptation. Rupert Young of BBC 1’s Merlin joins Kara as husband Jack Manningham and the multitalented Keith Allen is cast in the role of Detective Rough. While Jack Manningham (Rupert Young) is on the town each evening his wife Bella (Kara Tointon) is home alone. She can’t explain the disappearance of familiar objects, the mysterious footsteps overhead or the ghostly flickering of living room gaslight is she losing her mind? Does the terror exist in her imagination or are dark secrets living in her home? The surprise arrival of retired Detective Rough (Keith Allen) leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core. Gaslight is written by one of the 20th Century’s most renowned British writers, Patrick Hamilton whose works also include the chilling Rope successfully adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock. In the tradition of heavyweight thrillers from Hitchcock, Christie or Priestley, Gaslight is a genre defining, all round elegant masterpiece. Kara Tointon has received universal critical acclaim for her

Anthony was an associate director at the National Theatre until 2014 where he commissioned and developed one hundred new plays for NT Connections. A tense and hugely satisfying evening of great British theatre, this new production of Gaslight is one not to be missed. he set is HOI’s best yet and works well in realising the grimy underground life of the drones and the precious world of the privileged. Dean and the creative team have included some amazing effects, pole dancing behind a veil of choreographed water, a robotic number danced in near total darkness with stunning light covered costumes and an unravelling of red silks for an aerial acrobatic duet to, yes to Ravel’s Bolero (was that word play intentional Christopher?). And this is the best lit HOI show that I have seen and I have seen many, lighting that is considered as a part of the whole and achieves a cohesive vision. Holiday On Ice is a wonderful thing but of late it has struggled to find the huge audiences that it once enjoyed. I only hope that this amazingly strong show will revitalise the company and bring in a new audience who will see that ice dance spectaculars are more than feathers and sequins, leaps and spins when put in the hands of great creatives as Believe has been.

First they have a chat with his ex-wife Tessa, then they look through the original investigation files, and lastly a conversation with an old school friend is vastly illuminating.
The Big Spell Sky1, 8pm One of those most excellent brain-teaser programmes that is also entertaining – well, it certainly will be with this lot. As well as being hosted by Sue Perkins it also features Joe Lycett and Moira Stuart. They’re testing the country’s brightest young spellers – not of the Harry Potter variety, disappointingly.

FRIDAY 13 Not Going Out BBC1, 9pm Lee Mack’s sitcom has fastforwarded a few years for Lucy and their collection of oddball friends and family. They are veterans of holy union with seven years of marriage and several kids in tow. So what’s the secret? Tricky. Especially as they’re arguing about how to best to keep the romance alive.
Tina & Bobby ITV1, 9pm First in a three-part drama series telling the true story of Tina and Bobby Moore’s marriage. It’s love at first sight, which is great when you first meet someone but usually there’s a relationship after that to be navigated, and theirs is no exception. Tina struggles with being a housewife, and Bobby’s football star is rising.
Delicious Sky One, 9pm With more lingering shots of decadent foodstuff than a Nigella Christmas special, the metaphor is not without beauty – but do make sure you have at least a jaffa cake to munch along with. Gina (Dawn French) returns to Penrose and reminisces about her relationship with Leo, and then has a run-in with Rosa.

MONDAY 16 Insert Name Here BBC2, 10pm Do you know a Mary? Not so many of them about these days, but a fair few in history for our teams to be quizzed on. First Dates Hotel Channel 4, 10pm First Dates continues to dazzle its romantic hopefuls, this time not just with tasty treats but with a sunny climate in the South of France and pretty snazzy hotel rooms. Keeping with the mix of ages, interests, and characters, and with maitre d’ Fred on hand to gently guide them when the wheels fall off, it’s delightful.
