his Tuesday I will be giving blood and I’m sort of looking forward to it. In fair weather it can be a nice stroll to a fine view, combined with a nice, unearned, smug sense of easy altruism. Back when I was a lad in Eastbourne I rounded up a group of boys to give blood and it was surprisingly sociable and memorable. We bumped into our old headmaster because Eastbourne is that bumpintosomeoneyouknow kind of place. One person calmly fainted in the chair, which we supported him through (nice people that we were rather than the stereotypical loud, selfish pissants normally associated with the lad moniker). We used the excursion as an alternative form of predrinking, reducing the amount we would have to drink later in town and thereby saving us money, while also sticking two fingers up to the establishment who said that we shouldn't be drinking after giving blood. You have to get your kicks somehow in a small town. Regardless of an individual's reason for going however, giving blood seems like a good thing to do and one that is pretty straightforward for a lot of people. Brighton has a pretty competitive blood market so you have to book quite far in advance but it's worth doing, both because you might help save someone's life or so you can do something different, get free food, catch up with friends: the possibilities are endless. New this week, we have a brand new columnist in Gogglebox star Louis Michael. We’re very excited about having him on board and he’s been a pleasure to work with. The cover image was taken by his cousin Cass and we’ve also covered his sister Alex’s charity comedy evening before, so the Michaels are certainly a potent and talented family unit. I look forward to reading Louis’ column every week.

o... the Queen had a cold over Christmas and I had a cold over new year. Not being in my ‘90s there wasn't the same kind of concern over my health amongst the media, although Facebook was very supportive. I snuggled into my dressing gown and pyjamas, slapped a superhero movie I'd been given as a Crimbo present on the telly, Lemsip in a cup, and those all important soft feel tissues by my side as copilot of the sofa. It's only a cold. And we all know how to weather those. Colds bring out the best in coping mechanisms. There are no antibiotics or special pills to knock a cold on the head. The only thing you can really do is stop what you're doing, buckle in, and ride it out listening to your body like it's the lyrics to your teenage crush's latest chart hit with all the dedication of a 13yearold in fullon devotion.
“ 'Only a cold' has been the damning dismissal of this seasonal blight ” 'Only a cold' has been the damning dismissal of this seasonal blight for a while, but in all fairness – as wretched as we might feel for a few days, usually it passes pretty swiftly once given the requisite down time. Besides which, the time immediately after all that hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year is ripe for germs that have been waiting in the wings whilst I dash from pillar to post. Not driving might feel like a freedom for most of the year, but come train strike season merging smoothly into seasonal train stopaltogether for Christmas, the lack of mobility steps up well as an emotional and physical petri dish for lurgies. I like my freedom of movement, dargnammit! Oh, and there’s the crotchitiness of feeling poorly too. Sorry about that. To be honest, after those few days of feeding a cold leftover Quality Street and little oranges from under a sofa blanket I’ve been feeling a lot better. And may I heartily recommend it as the correct action to take to all of you currently being hit by winter germs. The point at which I definitively know I’m getting better is when I’m bored. And the point at which I know I’m actually better is when I start getting chores done again as a matter of muscle memory. I posted a late package yesterday that has been waiting since November. Things are looking brighter. 4 | LATEST 7

ver wanted to know what I was thinking without having to lower the volume on your TV? It's time for your eardrums to have a break: you're in luck. I was known for shouting my opinions over the dinner table long before I was known for shouting my opinions over the television. But being the youngest of four meant having to wait until the more recent years until anything I said was actually listened to.
“ I learned that writing was the
perfect outlet for a motor mouth like myself ” Alternatively, it may have something to do with going from the smallest to the tallest in the family; a 6’2” man is hard to ignore. At dinner times I would constantly try to break out of the annoying younger brother/baby of the family box, but the louder I got the tighter the walls of that box pressed. What I had learned on the playground, that decibel level dictates right to speak, clearly did not translate to the dinner table. This was a distressing realisation. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
During those earlier years, either in an attempt to journal the trials and tribulations of my young heart, or more likely during a school assignment, I learned that writing was the perfect outlet for a motor mouth like myself. In fact, paper proved to be a far better conversationalist than any of my family. It never interrupted and always let me finish, it was consistently a good listener, and best of all it had the uncanny ability of making me sound more intelligent. With this revelation my family was gifted with a break from my incessant chattering (although by this time I’m told it was just background noise) as I turned more and more often to writing. When I wrote I found that it gave my voice a fluency and coherence that I only rarely struck on in speech. Given time to properly articulate myself, and seeing the rhythm of my thoughts in the structure of the sentences, meant that being left floundering for words was something I could gladly leave in the past. Never again would I be upstaged and left speechless at the dinner table — at least not in my written versions. The idea that those early scribblings were the real beginning of something is humbling. I am so grateful to have this platform and I so look forward to sharing the churning of my brain cogs with you all. It’s taken 20 years but maybe I finally don’t need to shout to be heard anymore. STAGE
REVIEW
> Not Dead Enough
> Sister Act
B
righton author Peter James has achieved international acclaim as a best selling crime author and along the way garnered every writing award that the genre has to offer. It's a remarkable achievement and one that has put him at the forefront of the world's literary scene. And James is driven, not only penning the Roy Grace novels, amongst other writing, but also seeing three of his books transposed to the stage once again to great acclaim. Now the award winning actor Shane Richie and leading television presenter Laura Whitmore will star in the next thrilling stage adaptation of Peter James’ Not Dead Enough. Following Peter James’ 11th consecutive Sunday Times No.1 in the UK Book Charts and the huge sell out success of The Perfect Murder and Dead Simple on stage, the thrilling work of multimillion selling author Peter James returns to Theatre Royal Brighton with the world premiere production of Not Dead Enough. Shane Richie has played numerous roles on stage and screen and is perhaps best known for his role as Alfie Moon in BBC TV’s EastEnders. He will next be seen on screen in a brand new six part series based on EastEnders’ characters Kat and Alfie Moon as they embark on a new life in Ireland, which is set to broadcast in early 2017. No stranger to theatre, Laura

Peter James with Laura Whitmore and Shane Richie
Whitmore’s acting career began at a young age with the Leinster School of Music and Drama in Dublin. In the very same year that she completed her Diploma in Performance with a special honour for her final performance she was chosen as the new face of MTV Europe. Laura is best known for her work as a presenter for MTV, The Brits, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Here Now and most recently for gracing our screens as one of the stars in 2016’s Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1. Shane and Laura are also joined on stage by award winning actor Stephen Billington, best known for television roles in Coronation Street and Hollyoaks as well as film roles including the Academy Award winning Braveheart. Not Dead Enough is the third novel in the award winning Roy Grace series and now becomes the third play in his box office smash hit and critically acclaimed stage franchise. James has been acclaimed as “one of the most fiendishly clever crime fiction plotters” (Daily Mail); his brilliant international bestselling Roy Grace novels have been published in 36
languages and have sold over 18 million copies worldwide. On the night Brian Bishop murdered his wife, he was sixty miles away, asleep in bed. At least that’s what he claims. But as Detective Superintendent
“ Peter James – best selling crime writer ”
Roy Grace continues to deal with the mysterious disappearance of his own wife, he starts to dig a little deeper into the chilling murder case and it soon becomes clear that love can be a dangerous thing. Following the nationwide success of The Perfect Murder with Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace earlier this year, Not Dead Enough will reunite Peter James with theatre producer Joshua Andrews, the Olivier award winning director Ian Talbot and award winning writer Shaun McKenna. packed house seemed united in thinking that Craig Revel Horwood's production of Sister Act was heaven sent. He is of course blessed with a cast of talented actor/musicians who can sing, dance and play. The story is good, but so too are the songs penned specially for the musical which are not the classic soul and disco numbers we know from the film. Whoopi Goldberg made the role her own in an iconic performance so for anyone taking on the part of Sister Mary Clarence they have a mighty hurdle to leap, Alexandra Burke leaps it with ease and proves that she can not only deliver the songs but deliver the comedy too, she is a natural. The voice is superb but there is a comic physicality to her performance that is the surprise of the production. There are also enough numbers and opportunities for the rest of the cast to show off their individual and ensemble vocal skills and this they do. Energy packed, musically joyous and delightfully funny, Sister Act is heavenly! Brighton Centre, 4 January Andrew Kay

MILES JUPP > After taking over the reins of The News Quiz, acting and writing (from the selfpenned ‘In And Out Of The Kitchen’ to ‘Outnumbered’) Miles Jupp is back on the road with a brand new stand up show
C
omedian Miles Jupp describes his new show, Songs of Freedom, as “a rant about me, you, domestic imprisonment, fatherhood, having to have opinions, hot drinks, the government, bad balance, housing, ill health, the ageing process, navigation and other people's pants”. That's a very long list of thing to be fretting about. “Oh, I'm not a fretter,” he replies thoughtfully. “More a despairer.” But his fans shouldn't despair, nor indeed fret; in conversation Miles is warm and witty, and in no way negative about his situation in life. It's just that the modern world can – in his word – “discombobulate” him. Take a recent incident at the house he shares with his wife, Rachel, and their five children in the Welsh borders. “I can get angry very, very quickly about inanimate objects, particularly if they don't do what I want them to do,” says Miles. “We've just had a new boiler put in and I can't operate it. I've read the instructions but it's got this enormous control panel and I don't understand it, or for that matter why it makes the radiators come on at 3am. The man who installed it has had to come back and talk us all through it. “And now we have bought a smart TV and, after not having had a television for eight years, it's all slightly baffling. It's the equivalent of going on a yoga
retreat and in the intervening time the industrial revolution has happened. 'What's going on? I don't know how to use a loom...' “Of course our sevenyearold understands how the TV works perfectly, but I can't very well go and wake him up at midnight and say, 'We want to watch Peaky Blinders, come and find it for us...'”
as: 'I don't tweet, but I write down things that ought to be a tweet, and here they are'.” In actuality it's a very funny, wry take on life. Many of Miles' fans will be keen listeners to Radio 4's topical comedy show ‘The News Quiz’, which he took over as host of last year, and which he is enjoying enormously. “I love working as part of a team, and I
“ I don't tweet, but I write down things that ought to be a tweet ” In case you're thinking that Miles is a man born out of his time, he goes on to wax lyrical about the reversing camera in the family car. “It's just brilliant,” he says. “It's just that I am slightly out of kilter with the modern world and I do come at things from a different angle sometimes.” You will by now have guessed that Miles is a man who can have a joke at his own expense, and that his wit is the kind that demands there should be a typeface called “ironic” for conversations such as this. When we ask if the new show contains any material about his young family, he responds: “Why talk about something as wonderful as my children when I could be talking about something completely pointless? The show can be summed up
hope people listening get some sense of me as a person, rather than just some bloke capable of reading stuff out loud.” Miles' father was a minister in the United Reform Church and he himself studied Divinity at Edinburgh University. While still a student there he started acting and, for those of a certain age, he will forever be Archie the Inventor in CBeebies' Balamory. “I often get people come up to me and start talking about it,” he says. “For me it was a long time ago, but for them it's a defining part of their childhood.” Apart from ‘The News Quiz’, people know Miles from television as fusspot Nigel in the ecclesiastical comedy ‘Rev’, as Captain Fanshaw in soldiering comedy ‘Gary Tank Commander’, as John Duggan in
‘The Thick of It’ and from his selfpenned ‘In and Out of the Kitchen’, in which he played minor celebrity chef Damian Trench. Miles says ‘In and Out of the Kitchen’ won't return to the BBC, but he is currently writing Damian's memoir, due for publication later this year. He also appeared as the Valet of Greystoke in ‘The Legend of Tarzan’, which was released earlier this year in July, and is Blackberry in an upcoming new adaptation of Richard Adams' ‘Watership Down’ for the BBC, part of a starstudded cast that includes Sir Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton and John Boyega from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. He usually gets to play posh and/or clever chappie roles, but says he would really love to be cast as a baddie. I suggest that's because, as an unfailingly polite man, he would love to play against type, and he agrees. "You would get to cut loose and say bad things,” Miles says. “You can be unpleasant without having to apologise for it." In the meantime, audiences at his live shows will be able to enjoy the real version of Miles having a rant at modern life's multiple irritations – politely, of course, without a hint of unpleasantness but with a lot of laughs. Miles Jupp: Songs of Freedom is at Brighton Dome on Friday 3 February, 8pm. For tickets visit brightondome.org

FRIDAY 20 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown Channel 4, 9pm After a week of rinsing your brain for pay, it’s quite good fun to exercise the old noggin for fun – and compete against comedians who are a mix of those that spot the conundrums and others who have difficulty spelling ‘cat’. Entertaining, engaging, and perfect Friday night fodder.
Lip Sync Battle UK Channel Five, 10pm The show that brings the most fun to be had in a tweenager’s living room onto an actual stage with a live audience, plays host to model and entrepreneur Katie Price, aka Jordan, and adventure presenter Ben Fogle taking to the mute mic. So much fun. Thank you Professor Green and Mel B for playing host to this treat.
FILM: Strange Days Syfy, 11pm There was a time when the year 2000 was the future – as opposed to the past it currently resides as. It revelled in its flying cars and jetpacks with some, and for others it was a near future with a blackmarket in recorded experiences delivered straight into your brain. Ralph Fiennes’ thriller lives in the latter.
