wo weekends ago I ventured out of the house properly for the first time this year. Coldridden and selfpitying, I thankfully had commitments and nice stuff to do to take my mind off it. I love Duke's At Komedia: the seating is generous and comfortable and the screen is sharp and large, filling the space perfectly. The pub/cafe environment is also wellsuited to pre or postfilm catch ups with a friend. Manchester By The Sea was a quiet, melancholy film (not too much wallowing though) with some of the most welldrawn, rounded, real characters I've seen on screen in a long time. Kenneth Lonergan's justifiably lauded film is worth seeking out if you can find it: particularly if you're a fan of slowburning, simmeringly beautiful drama like Six Feet Under or the films of Hirokazu Koreeda. Sunday saw the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra play the Dome in one of their regular afternoon concerts. If you've never been then I urge you to try it out. Full price tickets start at £12 and under 18s and students can go for half price. It was great to see some younger people in the crowd, which also boosts the atmosphere and helps to bridge the pop/classical divide (something I’m passionate about as regular readers might already know). Live classical music is a startling spectacle and conjures a sense of musical awe that's hard to convey in this little column here. The next concert is on Sun 5th Feb and I think you should consider it if you want to try something new. Enough gushing anyway. We're lucky to have so much to do in the city on a weekend, and the amount of options we have is worth celebrating. Email me if you hear about a great event and I could maybe feature it in the magazine, on TV, or might just want to go myself.

ennis Healey. My grandpa. Father Christmas. When I was a kid a common thread for all of these men was the copious and creative hair that called itself ‘eyebrows’. Spitting Image ran with this and the curls were bountiful – of Healey, they didn’t know my grandad. Then there began a trend for trimming back a bit and the eyebrows that ran free in my youth appear to be disappearing fast. Watching Billy Crystal in a film the other day his almost total absence of eyebrows reminded me of when I'd noticed a similar vacancy on the face of James Woods a few years back. And I'd been concerned as to how it might affect the way his face acted. In Postcards From The Edge Meryl Streep draws Shirley MacLaine's eyebrows on again after she's been in a car accident. "The studio made me shave them off and they never grew back properly", the older actress mutters quietly. And perhaps the tradition of over grooming has simply continued.
“ Semi permanently tattooed like a proud stroke of calligraphy ” I've seen them pencilthin and semi permanently tattooed like a proud stroke of calligraphy. My grandmother used to express admiration for my straight brows, whereas I'd wish for arched ones to appear overnight so I’d look like Marilyn Monroe. I genuinely didn’t understand what an eyebrow pencil was for until I was in my mid twenties and asked a pal I was on holiday with, as we got ready for a night out. The thing is, even the absence of eyebrows is expressive. Eyebrows dress the face so well, they’re easily overlooked until their farewell makes a bigger statement than their gradual departure. High brows in Hollywood used to imply a familiarity with the old scalpel and a telltale sign of a facelift. It moved from the classic Katherine Hepburn knowing arch, to a surprised catlady. These days the trend seems to be for strong thick brows – with none of the telltale straggly characters I am so fond of, making them untidy. But like every fashion, I’m sure this too will change. Maybe in ten years time we’ll all have them drawn on our foreheads like Divine. Which sounds like fun too. And will leave Billy Crystal and James Woods already one step ahead of the rest of us. to being an adult
W
e all spend our early lives craning our necks to look up at the distant world of adulthood, pondering its secrets, impatiently awaiting our induction. I can only speak for myself when I say I was somewhat disappointed to find that one of the long awaited secret keys to being an adult, that sacred division which separates the immature from the mature, is time management. I was hoping for something more magical. My first realisation upon turning twenty was that there wasn't enough time. Or rather, the time I did have was suddenly so much more precious. The distinction between child and adult is solidified as childhood innocence dissipates to reveal our limited time on earth. So suddenly all the things I assumed I'd have time to do need their own slot in my diary with two weeks notice; my eagerly anticipated piles of unread books transform into far more daunting piles of hours and days; skills I’d hoped to learn loom over me with the demand of time commitment. It isn't not having enough money that worries me; it’s not having enough time.
“ Time travel may not yet be possible but good time management is close enough ”
Like I said before this is a recent revelation. For the past few years I’ve been a diehard procrastinator, and my adolescent procrastination has clung onto me in my transition to adulthood. But it’s by the examples of my new heroes, the busy bees and the jugglers, people who can do three things at once and cross fifty items off their to do list everyday, that I intend on finally shaking it off. There’s so much admiration to be had for the ability to get things done, to maximise efficiency, to make the most of the time we have. This, I think, is the secret within the secret. Time travel may not yet be possible, but good time management is close enough; if you manage your time well comparatively you get more time than others. Getting what once took me three days done in one day means I get two whole extra days. That’s the magic I’d hoped for as a child. In my first few steps into adulthood I’ve learned that instead of mourning our lack of time we should make the most efficient use of the time we have. When we switch our perspective from not enough time to grateful for every second, the calendar seems to get a heck of a lot longer. LATEST 7 | 5

urgers, burgers, burgers, it's the food craze that goes on and on. I like a good burger, like most people, but I do baulk at
being told that a burger is "the best burger in town" by nearly every place that pats a patty onto a griddle. The truth is that there are a fair number of decent burgers on the market, being served in a fair number of ways, from the fast and on the hoof, by which I do not mean horse meat, to the rather poncified. I can do fast when needs be, but as a man of a certain age I do like a modicum of comfort when I dine. With this in mind, and with a visiting friend over from Denver, we headed out for burgers to show him that we Brits can do justice to this most American of culinary delights. Where I hear you ask? Well to Coggings & Co, a firm favourite since it opened a few years back. Andrew Coggings has been around on the city’s food

scene for some time but when he realised that in his smart gastro pub most people were ordering the burger he decided to start a new business dedicated to that. It proved to be a great move. The emphasis is on quality local produce, Sussex produce. Now I know that "local" can often mean that a chef has wandered down to the corner shop, but not here. Andrew has built up fantastic relationships with Sussex producers to create a menu that is in my view small but perfectly formed. There are some great dishes on there and a changing menu of specials too. I was very tempted by a pulled beef burger but in the end, swayed by the fact that it was on the menu for the last time, I had the burger with mushroom tapenade and pale ale rarebit. It was a succulent feast that dribbled down my chin, there's no tidy

way of eating a burger to my way of thinking and this was filthily delicious, as were the beef dripping chips and proper onion rings. s there a soundtrack to your life? You know, a selection of songs and tunes that are a perfect fit. I have always loved listening to the BBC Radio programme Desert Island Discs, but how often do you get the impression that the guests are choosing music that they think makes them look like a more impressive human being? All too often I think. I was a guest on a similarly formatted Radio Sussex show a few years back and tried my hardest to choose the music that really does mean something to me. My word, what a rag bag of tunes that turned out to be, from the very serious to the very silly. I must have come across as being slightly crazy – not that it bothers me, I have traded on being slightly crazy for some time now and it works fairly well. Well it does for me and no doubt you will see that on my new Latest LGBT+ TV chat show. I went along to the cinema recently to catch a preview of La La Land. It is being billed as a five star triumph, the feel good movie of the year. The last time I fell for the line "Feel Good Movie of the Year” was in the marketing for Slum Dog Millionaire. I was so shocked to see so much misery and violence and an opening sequence that ended up with a small boy falling into a cess pit, that I did not feel even remotely good. Lala Land is rather jolly and opens with an amazing cutfree camera shot that is seriously impressive and made me believe that the Hollywood musical might indeed be back. In many ways it is and there are great set pieces, a fairly decent love story and a very likable couple of leads who can just about hold a tune in that paper bag and dance a bit too. But when I say dance a bit I do mean a bit, they're no Fred and Ginge, not by a long chalk. When it comes to dance I found Ed Balls more entertaining! As for the tunes, well they're okay, but I didn't come away singing them, far from it. I came away trying to remember one decent tune and one memorable lyric. How I wish there had been a Stephen Sondheim, a Jule Styne or a Cole Porter on hand when they put this together. If this seems harsh then I apologise. I did for the most part enjoy the film, it's well made and has some really great moments, just no great songs whatsoever. I am an unashamedly gay man who falls happily into the stereotype of loving a good musical and whilst the film is okay it does not stand up against the greats. I know everyone is raving about it, sorry I just can’t join in.

STAGE > International best seller Peter James talks to Latest 7 about his life of crime
When you moved from psychic thrillers to crime fiction did you imagine that they would become so globally popular? Never! I’d always been a fan of crime fiction but I felt the market was already far too crowded. I had a two book deal and I figured that would be it and I’d return to my psychological thrillers. What makes the Roy Grace novels work internationally? It’s a combination of universal themes, the fact that Brighton is an iconic city known around the world, but most of all people of all nationalities seem to find a connection with Roy Grace. As a writer creating such a well established character, how difficult is it for you to see an actor portraying your vision? It will be impossible to have a lead actor that fits everyone’s vision of the role. The key is that more than just physical appearances, I want to see an actor who will have the very essence of Roy Grace’s warmth and intelligence. You love theatre, is turning a novel into a play a satisfying experience? Immensely, it’s a wonderful feeling to sit in a packed theatre listening to the audience react and enjoying themselves. You can never sit and watch someone reading one of your books in the same way!
You talk with police officers in your research, do you ever talk to known criminals to get their side of the story? And who else do you talk to for research? Yes, all my novels are written from the perspectives of the victims, the perpetrators and the police. I talk to criminals and I talk to victims almost as much as I talk to the police. I’m an absolute stickler for research so I will talk to experts in the field of whatever I’m writing about. In depth research has taken you out with Sussex Police many times, have you ever been really frightened? Yes, I’ve been scared on a number of occasions – even being a passenger in a bluelight run, whilst exhilarating, can be pretty terrifying too! I’ve been the most scared at 2am one morning in Crawley approaching a parked car with a suspected armed killer inside with just one single police constable, in a singlecrewed car. Will we ever see Roy Grace make it to film or TV? Yes, we will, its taking a long time because I’m determined that it is as faithful as possible to the books and I’m not prepared to allow any significant changes that some of the past idiots in TV have tried to make. I hope we will see some real progress during 2017… watch this space! When writing crime do you have to think like a criminal? Yes, very much when writing the scenes involving my villains I put myself into their minds; I wrote a scene in which a thief was picking a door lock and a professional burglar told me the way he thinks is as himself

being inside the lock – I was very pleased with that scene. The novels have a common subplot involving Sandy, Grace's first wife, do you regret that this is hard to include in the staged versions? No not at all – we have made references to it in the stage plays and it always gets a pleasing murmur from those who know the novels. Shaun Mckenna, who has adapted the book to stage has been brilliant at finding ways to bring Sandy in.
amount that we don’t understand and I have a very open mind. I have a standalone thriller coming out in October called ‘Absolute Proof’ which is in this terrain – it revolves around the theme of what it would take to prove God’s existence and what would be the consequences if someone claimed to have that proof. Is Roy a selfportrait? No, but there are strong elements of my own character and views in him, such as his feelings about Brighton’s horror hospital, The Royal Sussex County!
Roy Grace is a dedicated detective, but will you ever allow him to be promoted? It’s a good question. The problem with all promotion is the higher up the rank the more detached officers become from front line policing and inevitably turned into pen pushers. Roy is happiest – and my readers are happiest too – when he is a handson detective.
You write about crime but have you ever committed one and would you like to confess to it here? No major crime, but I certainly know how to commit the perfect murder, so anyone planning to give me a bad review on Amazon watch out!
Grace has often uses psychic mediums in his cases, do you believe in psychic forces? I certainly believe there is a huge

hen the story of my transition hit the tabloids in January 2016 I had no concept of where my new notoriety would take me. Over the past year I've spoken at Wembley Stadium and received a standing ovation at the TUC, I've met thousands of amazing people and I've found a new career, on your TV screens. A mere 12 months later and I find myself, not only presenting and reporting but running an entirely new TV channel, and a UK first at that!
“ Latest LGBT+ TV will be bringing the best in LGBT news ” Latest LGBT+ TV will be bringing the best in LGBT news and entertainment to your TV screens, and will stream globally online. I can't believe that I've been given this opportunity and I'm thrilled at the prospect of leading one of the most exciting developments in British television for decades.
The world is changing, and not always for the better, throughout the world there is an increasing wave of bigotry and prejudice. This channel represents a very real possibility to combat that and change people’s lives. We're aiming to entertain, educate and inspire our viewers. Together we can be the change that we want to see in the world, we're giving people pride not prejudice. 9 to 10 every night from Wed 1st February on Latest TV, Freeview 7, Virgin Media 159 or thelatest.co.uk
