P
lonking down in front of my Playstation 4 is an incredibly fun and immersive experience I'd like to extol. Some might find it odd that I'm a music/opera/book lover who’s also into gaming but I find cultural snobbery irksome anyway. Ranking pleasures has always been problematic: just look up Bentham’s felicific calculus if you want an example. Gaming fans might even roll their eyes at my alluding to it being looked down on anyway: it's a multibillion pound industry with countless millions of players across the world. I bought my PS4 in late September and have played some sensational games since then. Firewatch is what's known as a “walking sim” where you wander around a beautifully rendered, unrealistically vibrantly coloured forest as a fire warden and select dialogue options. The game is noteworthy for the strength of its writing and voice cast. You play from a first person perspective as Henry (whose wife has become ill), as he struggles with his marriage and identity and takes a break with an isolated job. He converses with his boss Delilah via walkie talkie: they flirt, bicker, discuss strange events, and also just pass the time with idle chit chat and observations. It's an enthralling story with some mystery elements that takes about six hours or so to play through, and I got it for about £9. On the other end of the scale, I loved Final Fantasy XV for its swashbuckling combat and a stunning mystical world to explore. It cost me £38 but happily ate up about 45 hours of my spare time. Gaming is a very cheap, startlingly entertaining art form, and will be the dominant cultural medium of the 21st century, as film was for the 20th century. Are you a gamer? Do you think it's just twaddle for kids or do you agree with me that it's one of the most thrilling, developing, protean art form around at the moment?

ecently I was having a chat with my godmother. As I was never confirmed I like to pretend that she still carries the can for any ethical or theological hiccups I encounter. We also just like to have a chat. We were having a ‘state of the nation’ catch up and I told her how proud I am of her for running her own successful business. “I’m not sure if it’s that successful,” she muttered, batting off the compliment. “No,” I argued, “it is successful. It is respected by everyone who employs you – they come back time and time again.” And then I realised that that is my measure of respect. How well something or someone is respected for what they are or do.
“ These days scraping a living is something of a Krypton Factor challenge ”
These days scraping a living is something of a Krypton Factor challenge, with many people selfemployed and constructing a mish mash of jobs and ventures to reach the requisite income to keep body and soul together. It’s something that can also be something of a marvellous adventure – especially in this neck of the woods where the creative minds whirr constantly on overload, with great ideas popping up at venues and on new websites frequently. It’d be an interesting figure to find out who has set up and who has contributed to Kickstarter ventures in this city, in relation to the average numbers across the rest of the country. We like business curiosity. I admire the boldness to try and bring big ideas into reality. And there’s a history of it right here – from Marc Abraham’s brilliant PupAid to Summer stalwart Paddle Around The Pier, the popup marvel of The Warren every Brighton Fringe, and Brighton comedy landmark Komedia. At some point someone had a wild idea – and made it a reality. And I respect that so very much. Which is why it was nice for me to realise that the cornerstone to success, to me, is personal fulfilment and a respect for that. I don’t mean simply selfemployment, but doing what you do to the best of your ability. My godmother thought about it for a moment, and then seemed to settle into being happy with that. I respect her. Her clients respect her. And she respects herself. Who could ask for more? 4 | LATEST 7
n January 21st 2017 myself along with the rest of the world witnessed one of the most momentous global collaborations of this century to date, and the biggest protest in all of American history, as millions of people across the planet took part in the Women’s March. Despite the fact that the march took place in large part due to certain political activities, I think that the far more interesting part of the march, and what I really want to talk about today, was the people themselves. The way in which we came together on Saturday 21st was phenomenal. To see such unification among humans is such a rare thing— it’s difficult enough putting together a pub quiz team. Witnessing such encouraging solidarity reminds us just how easy camaraderie with our fellow human is. In a time when war, hunger and oppression are still realities across the globe this message has never been more important. Too often we lose ourselves in the bubble of our individual concerns. Pressured by the responsibilities of our lives it’s understandable, and forgivable, that we forget to consider those around us. But that’s just it, there are constantly people around us. When we’re in such close proximity to each other all we need to do is reach out and we instantly establish a connection. The Women’s March was establishing a connection across the globe, one of solidarity and community and support. More than this, I saw it as a reaffirmation of that most obvious community to which we all belong: humankind. Definitions of gender, race, nationality and sexuality may help us discover our own individual identities, but we can only come together as one united people when we come together under the shared banner of humanity. The Women’s March was a day where the needs of women and the right to equality were rightfully the main agenda, but the beautiful byproduct was the human cooperation that it incited. I for one hope that this historical action of humankind indicates a new direction for humanity, one which establishes more connections more frequently until the apathy we have become acquainted with dissolves and a new era of empathy emerges. To quote Madonna, one of the speakers at the march: “welcome to the revolution of love”.

aslight is written by Patrick Hamilton, one of the 20th century's most renowned British writers, and stars the highly acclaimed stage and television actress Kara Tointon (The Halcyon, Mr Selfridge, The Sound of Music Live!). Kara is joined by BBC Merlin's Rupert Young and Keith Allen direct from the critically acclaimed West End production of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. The play tells a chilling tale: while Jack Manningham is on the town each evening his wife Bella is home alone. She can’t explain the disappearance of familiar objects, the mysterious footsteps overhead or the ghostly flickering of living room gaslight – is she losing her mind? Does the terror exist in her imagination or are dark secrets living in her home? The surprise arrival of retired Detective Rough leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core.

hat a week! No let me say that again. What a week!!! I'm seldom profligate with exclamation marks but it has been the most marvelous of times. When Latest Bill came to me with the idea of starting our new LGBT+ TV channel I was, to say the least, enthusiastic. I've been out far longer than I was ever in, and as a noisy gay man I have enjoyed my fair share of fun, notoriety and sadness too. But now, now is my time to celebrate being gay – big time. It took me a little time to decide what format I wanted to create, but once I had the idea, and the title (I do believe in the power of getting the title right from the very start), then it all fell into place. I was going to chat, or to be honest I was going to let my guests chat. Of course the first thing I had to do was get those The Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP, Minister of State for Digital & Culture guests. It's all well and good deciding to do a chat show, but would anyone want to be on it? Well the proof is in the long list of guests that I have already filmed and those booked to appear over the coming weeks. Episode one of AK Soufflé was a hoot, the legend that is James Ledward talking about playing oboe (not a euphemism) and being a choir boy, and Aneesa Chaudhry hugging me and impersonating her aunt and belting out a great number. The response was massive, waves of love from viewers and friends. Week two went equally well with Kathy Caton talking gin, that was a real tonic, and Sophie Cook coming in to talk about the channel launch and the mass of international coverage we have had in the media already – someone in Mexico was tweeting about it only this morning and then again a news piece from the Bay area of San Fransisco. The week got even better when as a team we went up to the Palace of Westminster to a cross party reception for Local TV Stations. It was an excellent opportunity for us all to meet our counterparts from across the UK, share our thoughts and lobby to MPs present to fight for ongoing support and funding. The canapes were good too! Most fun for me though was being a splash of bright yellow in a sea of sombre suits, I do love to stand out in the crowd. For all this support we thank you all and if you want to support us more then do get in touch, there are so many ways we can work together, not just LGBT businesses but those of you who recognise the value and broad appeal of what we hope will be a totally inclusive media opportunity.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD > Hugh Brunt talks to Joe Fuller about performing the stunning, visceral score of There Will Be Blood live with a 55 person orchestra and an exciting rare chance to hear an Ondes Martenot Could you tell me about the Brighton concert? Yeah sure, it's a screening of There Will Be Blood which picked up a couple of Oscars and has an amazing score. In my opinion it's one of the most important scores of the last few decades. We'll be bringing 55 musicians to perform the score live so it's a pretty conventional orchestra with strings, woodwind, brass and percussion and we have three soloists. One of those is playing a really interesting instrument from the 1920s called the Ondes Martenot. Only a handful of musicians have mastered it: we have Cynthia Millar performing for us and she's one of the best in the world, if not the best so we're very lucky to have her. There will also be violin soloist Galya Bisengalieva and cello soloist Oliver Coates who will perform two works: the last movement of the Brahms Violin Concerto which features a couple of times in the film and then the cello accompanied by piano also for Arvo Pärt's Fratres. It's a full rendering of everything in the film including those preexisting works alongside all of Jonny Greenwood's writing [Radiohead’s guitarist].
Will pieces be truncated or elongated? No it's exactly how you would experience it watching the original film. With this though, it's going to have a heightened atmosphere and tension because all those musical cues
Is it a challenge for you as a conductor without a click track? Is there a lot of pressure on you? We performed this a few times now. We feel really secure. We've spent a lot of time since we first performed it in 2014 in

are being performed live. A lot of time goes into the preparation and rehearsal process to refine all those tempos, to make sure the pacing's right. It's a much freer way of working and really enjoyable. The music has been stripped out of this print of the film and all that's left in is the dialogue and the SFX. So that's all mixed live and balanced in a very detailed and intricate way so that all audio elements have the space that they need. It's a constant conversation between what the orchestra is doing live and what our wonderful sound team do on the mixing desk.
rehearsals and general preparations. There's always a little bit of adrenaline but we've worked hard to ensure that all of those elements are really tidy and exciting for the audience. I'm keenly interested in bridging the classical divide and think this concert is a great way of reaching a wider audience. That's very true. It's a really good way to introduce a first time concertgoer to the potential of what an orchestra can do. The score has such a visceral impact and is so raw and earthy. In this context that music will speak very directly to the audience. It's a big screen, a big orchestra and in a very beautiful big space as well.
Have you performed at the Dome before? I visited it but never performed. This is the LCO's first performance in Brighton so we're very excited about it. All those elements come together to offer something bespoke I feel. It's such a different experience to seeing it in a cinema when you have the communal aspect of it. You have thousands of people enjoying this film with the music live. It does heighten the energy and the atmosphere. To me, focusing the attention on the music is one of the exciting things about it: framing the whole experience in a different way. There will be times when the audience are more drawn to what the orchestra are doing but sometimes hopefully times where they forget there's an orchestra there at all. That means that everything is being balanced effectively and subtly. There are dramatic peaks and troughs where the audience will realise if there's an orchestra there or not. THE ANDREW KAY > Skyfall charity dinner
I
heard the very sad news last week that my lovely dog Holly had passed away. She had for many years lived with my ex mother outlaw, very happily. It was an odd coincidence that the news came after a splendid charity dinner held by Skyfall in Hove in support of the animal charity Raystede. Holly had come from there many years ago and I was delighted to be there to raise funds for this excellent local organisation that looks after and rehomes animals that have been abandoned or neglected. The dinner itself was something of a feast with course after course of delicious dishes prepared by their amazingly young and talented chef Nathan and his team. Creating a menu is one thing but delivering it is quite another and they certainly managed to pull it off. The first course of smoked duck with remoulade and an orange gel was pretty impressive. The smoking perhaps a little to acrid for my taste but the remoulade really hit the spot and the orange gel worked wonderfully at leveling that smokiness.
“ Hats off to Skyfall & their young chef ” Next a scallop, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The long menu, which on first reading was slightly daunting was turning out to be delightfully light and well balanced. Next out fillet steak with the best carrots I have been served in many years. I know it should all be about the steak, and that was extremely good, well handled and brilliantly seasoned, but oh my, what great carrots! How often have I bemoaned the demise of the carrot in this column but in recent months I have been served dishes that have resurrected the humble vegetable. More fish next, a perfect tranche of hake with mussels and a delicious sauce and again beautifully cooked vegetables, Nathan certainly can handle the veg. At some point there was a sorbet, I forget quite when, and it was tasty but rather too sweet for my taste. I like a sorbet but if the intention is to be a palate cleanser then it needs to be sharp and refreshing. Despite being full I could not resist the pudding. Strangely it was not as beautifully presented as the other dishes, but oh my it was good and in particular the lightest baked cheesecake that I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of cheesecake! Hat's off to Skyfall and their young chef for pulling together a charity event where the food was equally as good as the cause.

GIVE PRIDE Pride makes an impact > Community groups benefit with £8,000 from Pride Social Impact Fund
C
ommunity groups from across Brighton and Hove have received a boost thanks to the Pride Social Impact Fund. From Whitehawk in the east to Portslade in the west, a record number of groups and organisations across the city have been awarded a slice of nearly £8,000. The hope is they will use the money to bring a rainbow of happiness to their communities – in much the same way Pride does for more than 300,000 people who attend events in August. Bids were considered by a panel made up of representatives from The Argus, BBC Sussex, Juice 107.2, Brighton and Hove Independent, Gscene, Brighton and Hove News, Latest TV and Latest 7 magazine.
“ Money raised by the public is going back into something that celebrates the city ”
Among the groups to benefit were the Tarner Community Project, which has received £1,000 towards providing a dropin centre for a group of young people not in employment, education or training. A further £1,000 will go towards supporting the LGBT History Big Top event, due to take place in New Steine throughout February. One of the groups to benefit is citybased creative writing charity Little Green Pig, which was awarded £500 towards a project creating a unique travel guide to Brighton and Hove. Emily Hogan, of Little Green Pig, said: "It is fantastic that money raised by the public is going back into something which celebrates our city and the children that live here, and we are most grateful for the support." 10 | LATEST 7
Other grants saw a sum of £495 awarded to the Friends of Farm Green to bring a mobile farm to Bevendean during the June half term, while the residents of Ardingly Court will get a new lawnmower and garden shredder thanks to a grant of £300. Bob Hammond, of Ardingly Court Residents' Association, said: "Pride has been having a positive impact on Brighton for many years, and it's great to see them also having a positive impact on local communities. Further awards were made to Dottie's Cafe, which provides employment to deaf people in East Brighton Park; Friends of Regency Square, to establish an exhibition in the subway linking their area to the sea; and the Mile Oak Recreation Action group, which is trying to refurbish an open space in the heart of a Portslade community. Tiffany Soanes, chairman of the Mile Oak Rec Action Group, said: "We are really looking forward to using the money to help us create a community garden for all of the local residents to enjoy for years to come. The Pride Social Impact Fund (SIF) is in its second year and is separate to the Rainbow Fund, which also raises money from Pride but supports LGBT causes. The SIF aims to support those groups or organisations which need a little helping hand in making a difference in their community. They do not have to be LGBT related; they don't even have to directlylinked to Pride (although applicants directly impacted will be favoured). However big or small, the only criteria is that it will brighten up people's lives by the time Pride comes round again next year. Funding comes from contributions made by businesses within the St James's Street Party area. Paul Kemp, of Brighton Pride, said: “Pride fundraising aims to both the Rainbow fund and the new Social impact fund are central to the delivery of Pride each year. "Pride must thank the panel of local media editors who independently assess the community grant applications, it’s great to see such a diverse group of organisations applying for grants. We hope that the grants have a positive outcome for groups and projects that might not otherwise have support or receive funding elsewhere.” He added: "Pride is only able to deliver this fundraising with the help of local businesses who contribute to the fund and take part in the Pride village party. We’d like to encourage more local businesses across the city who benefit from the bumper weekend of business Pride brings into the city, to get involved with our fundraising efforts for all our communities.” www.brightonpride.org

B
righton Festival have announced that this years programme will include The Gabriels: Election Year in the Life of One Family, a trilogy of plays by Tony Award winning playwright and director Richard Nelson. Particularly topical, The Gabriels is the followup to Richard Nelson’s The Apple Family Plays which was the theatrical highlight of the 2015 Brighton Festival. Those of us who were lucky enough to see those performances back in 2015 will no doubt be clamouring to get tickets to see this new production. This was modern theatre of such high quality, moving, intense, revealing and challenging all at the same time, and performed with a savage yet gentle reality that one seldom experiences in the theatre. It was quite remarkable how such a large body of work could be seen and digested with such ease as gradually the story unfolded over a series of extraordinary gatherings over food. I left the theatre both hungry for food and hungry for more from this incredible teaming or writer, actors and director – and now we have it. The landmark series from New York’s leading theatre company, The Public Theater, follows one extraordinary, imperfect American family in real time, tracking their lives throughout the turbulent election year of 2016. History, money, politics, art and culture
are all on the table in this moving trilogy about a family celebrating, remembering and waiting for the world to change. The first play Hungry places us in the kitchen of the Gabriel family of Rhinebeck, New York. The family discusses their lives and disappointments, as they fight the fear of being left behind and attempt to find resilience in the face of loss. What Did You Expect? brings us back to the kitchen of the Gabriel family, with the country now in the midst of the general election for President. In the course of one evening in the house they grew up in, history (both theirs and America's), money, politics, family, art and culture are chopped up and mixed together, while a meal is made around the kitchen table. The Gabriels gather once again in Woman of a Certain Age to await the result of the election. As they consider the future of their country, town and home, they compare notes on the search for empathy and authenticity at a time when the game seems rigged and the rules are forever changing. You'll be pleased to hear that it's my birthday this Sunday, and to celebrate I will be watching the BPO at the Dome. They'll be playing Mozart Symphony No. 29, Haydn Cello Concerto No. 1 and Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony. I love Mendelssohn's music: it's got beautiful, bold melodies but also emotional depth and musical heft. Brighton Dome, 5 Feb, 2.45pm

C Duncan reminded me of the brilliant band Papercuts with his debut album Architect released in 2015. He's gone more experimental and electronic with his second album The Midnight Sun, although recent single ‘Other Side’ still retains the poppy sensibilities and prominent vocals of his earlier work.

Where better to kick off your tour about living large than here? Eleanor Conway – comedian, music journalist, presenter – shares all of her dirty secrets in her debut show ‘Walk Of Shame’. From working for the Triads in Asia to rinsing London’s Tinder population, these are marvellous adventures. Komedia, Friday 3 February, 7.30pm, £10/8

Elf Lyons is a fresh, funny and thoughtful voice in the comedy landscape. ‘Pelican’ is her second show, mixing personal stories with feminist questions, packing punchlines and a remarkably likeable persona. This time she’s wondering if everyone wants to kill their mother, or if it’s just her. Caroline Of Brunswick, Tuesday 31 January, 7.45pm, £7/5

Live cinema screenings are a convenient and fun way to get my opera fix: the Duke's At Komedia in particular has stunning sound and a sharp screen to immerse yourself in. The Royal Opera House present Il Trovatore: a classic Verdi opera with plenty of love duets and rousing choruses. Duke’s At Komedia, 31 Jan, 7.15pm

I saw this show at Edinburgh Fringe last year and it was brilliant: a finely crafted, bitter critique of someone obsessed with a privileged notion of perfection. Georgina is more than a crude character however, the whole work has real heart and a great message behind it, as well as a fantastic comic actor in Anna Morris.
Following her recent travels in Southeast Asia, the beaches of the Thai coast have provided fresh inspiration for ceramicist Rowena Gilbert, taking her work in a new direction. You can see the results at Cameron Contemporary Art, Hove, where ‘Coast Series #2’ responds to the skylines and shores of these tropical islands, capturing the constantly changing hues and movements of these spaces with accents of waves splashing against rocks and birds in flight. It’s a step away from Rowena’s more controlled work of past years: a more abstract interpretation that embraces intuitive markmaking, showing this artist’s more playful side. Until 20 February. www.rowenagilbert.com www.artymagazines.com
