A

trip to Glyndebourne is special: a lustrous, vivid, vibrant spectacle combined with dazzling singing and music. I've seen some of my favourite ever shows thanks to their generous scheme offering cheaper tickets for Under 30s. The rightfully revered 2015 production of Saul was beguiling and even lurid at times in it staging, while also being transcendentally beautiful musically. Just stream ‘O Lord, Whose Mercies Numberless’ to sample the celestial, lilting grace of one of Handel’s arias as an example. My first ever opera at Glyndebourne was Britten's haunting, unnerving Turn of the Screw whereas Mozart’s Figaro last year was riotous fun, so there’s a diverse range of different experiences on offer. Those aged under 30 can buy £30 tickets in great seats for certain performances, which go on sale on Monday 27 February. This year’s Under 30s shows include a UK premiere of Cavalli’s Hipermestra, a new version of Hamlet and the brilliant Richard Strauss’ bold, comedic Ariadne auf Naxos. Any music lover should give opera a go: it's a startlingly complete musical performance, with striking variance between different singing styles meshed with an evocative, stunning live orchestra. The Glyndebourne Chorus exemplify how incredible the voice can sound in finely rehearsed unison. That's to say nothing of the staging, lighting, choreography, acting, directing, costumes and lots more. Yeesh, I get excited just writing about it. The tickets go quickly so you should persuade some friends and arrange who's booking in advance. For those over 30, it's worth noting that you can still find cheap standing tickets or look into other pricing options with the Glyndebourne box office. You won’t regret it.

alentine’s Day. The curse and the gift. I remember a past Valentine’s Day where my then partner and I had arranged a beautiful meal out together. We both even dressed up fancy. And we both seemed so charged that we couldn’t help but start the sniping before the starters had been cleared away. Fortunately we sussed out that we were both just on edge, and by dessert were back on an even keel again. Last Valentine’s I’d only been seeing someone for a couple of weeks – that stage where you’re not even sure if you should mark the day or play it cool. I received a single playing card – framed – of a queen of hearts. Now that’s cool. I think I gave a Star Wars colouring in book. Less romantic but showing I was listening to interests and activities. I did my best, considering the tricky timing of how long we’d been seeing each other.

“ We were not good sharks ” When I’m single I’ve longstopped looking for any random anonymous cards arriving in my letterbox. Those stopped when I left home and my Mum wasn’t around to ‘find’ a couple of homemade collages to pop in my brother and my porridge bowls before school. Both sweet and a little disheartening, as a teenager. When I was a student and single I’d go out with my mate unsuccessfully ‘sharking’ on Valentine’s night, but having a lovely time with him. We’d eye up single people in the bar and see if we could play it cool and catch their eye. Apparently it doesn’t work if you can’t keep a straight face – which was entirely down to us and our lack of faith in our ability to do what we were attempting. We were not good sharks. And then there have been the marvellous antiValentine’s nights I’ve been out on. Glorious anarchic comedy nights revelling in relationship independence. No knocks to those paired up (or other numbers that work for your particular relationship), but we were happy that we were with the friends we loved the most, and not settling with something that hadn’t been right for either of us. Raucous standup, great characters, free laughter without inhibition – a great celebration of a real love. This year I’ve made a thing for someone. Specifically tailored, but small enough to still be a token. Happy Valentine’s everyone. And may you all find a collage in your porridge bowl. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

> The Public Transport Phenomenon

I

’ve been using public transport for the last nine years. As an eleven year old starting secondary school and straining at the leash for every shred of independence I could get, the idea of the bus was a sacred symbol of autonomy. I imagined all the places I could go, all the freedom I would have, all the magic waiting for me inside what I saw then as a mysterious, colossal car. About a month in and the sparkles started to fade from my vision as I realised public transport actually offered very little excitement. The only great adventure to be had on a bus was the epic journey from A to B. But that was before I had taken notice of a phenomenon that is exclusive to communal travel, something that’s lightened the burden of public transport with a fresh coat of humour. I call it the Public Transport Phenomenon.

“ A battle between decorum and an animalistic instinct ” In this era of anonymity we may all be civil enough to share means of transportation, but the civility stops short of actual communication. It’s this reluctance to talk, but this necessity to congregate that facilitates the Phenomenon. I theorise that it is this removal of the cornerstone trait of humanity, our ability to verbally communicate, that is responsible for what I see as a battle between our human decorum and a much more animalistic instinct within us all. Have you ever noticed the atmosphere surrounding the doors of a bus about to open? That’s a crowd of people who are ready and focused. Though seemingly composed they balance the social protocol of proper etiquette with an overriding primal urge to bolt onto the bus and secure their seat. All those waiting to get off the bus see is a hungry crowd, remorseless and ready to pounce. And the Phenomenon isn't just restricted to buses. On trains we pick our place in the platform line up, obedient and compliant, but the second the doors open the every man for himself mentality possesses us as we flood into the train in one swarming movement. Even aeroplanes aren't out of reach of the Phenomenon's influence. Polite, single file, and considerate boarding just precedes the inevitable anarchical freeforall as people try to stand up, get their bags, and get off the plane all in one movement. So next time you’re squashed in a press of people on the bus, have a little look around and have a little laugh at the caged beast within us all. LATEST 7 | 5

J O S I E L O N G One of the sharpest and kindest comedians out there – Josie Long talks to Victoria Nangle about President Trump, reality television, and The Arts Emergency Service ahead of Sunday’s show

Hi Josie, how are you today? Hi Vicky, I'm great thanks, nice to speak to you again.

Quickfire, in honour of the title of your show – can you think of something better than…

2016 has been chockablock full of shocks. What would you like to predict for 2017 – nationally, internationally and personally? Nationally I predict that culottes will come in. Internationally, I predict that Donald Trump will be impeached. Personally I predict that I will be the cause of both of these things. I should warn you that I thought Ed Miliband would win in 2015, Brexit wouldn't happen and Bernie Sanders would be president, so this might not be super reliable.

Donald Trump Everything else that exists otherwise.

Is there any chance of more of your Radio 4 series Romance And Adventure? I would absolutely dream of writing another series but we weren't recommissioned so we are trying to find a way to make it happen. It was the coolest experience of my life to work with Clare Grogan. You had a bit of a foray into reality television this year. Would you ever go on another reality show, and if so which one? Ha! I am not sure I would. I wanted to do ‘The Island’ because I love watching the show and I wanted to do something to support Stand Up To Cancer too. Bloody hell it was a strange, gruelling experience! The only other reality shows I really love to watch are ‘First Dates’ and ‘Bake Off’, and I've got a boyfriend and I'm a shit baker so those aren't on the cards.

“ Nationally I predict that culottes will

come in. Internationally, I predict that Donald Trump will be impeached.

Your shows are always a delight of optimism mixed with integrity. What do you do when your positivity gets a knock in the world? Thank you! I think it's important to take some time out to be kind to yourself when you're feeling low, nobody is Magic and you can't be positive all of the time. But what always cheers my heart is knowing that even when I am a quivering wreck, there are other people who for whatever reason have fire in their belly and feel charged up to be positive and kind. I also like spending time with my niece, who's nearly three – because she's so silly and lovely I feel like the world is a wonderful place again. Plus she laughs if you put a hat on and then take it off, so she's an easy comedy audience.

Homemade banana bread Gluten free, sugar free home made banana bread (I am tedious). Hugging a rabbit Two rabbits in a band together. Marmite The band The Spook School. Brexit Everyone who voted Brexit moaning for the rest of their lives because they set the country on fire for no reason and now they have to deal with the consequences. (I'm worried that sounds bitter.) The Arts Emergency Service (that you run with Neil Griffiths) is an incredible idea to offer support in lots of ways to those wanting to pursue the arts but unable to pay for it. How can other people get involved to help? We would love people to be involved in any capacity they have, from donating, to joining our network of people oncall to provide help and advice, to training to be a mentor to part time volunteering in our London office. Go to our website arts emergency.org to get involved! Thanks! What do you find the most rewarding about being involved with The Arts Emergency Service? Meeting young people and getting to speak to them about their plans, ambitions and creative work. They are always so smart, energetic and inspiring that I feel excited about the future. What is your goto book that you love to give to people you like, and why? At the moment it's ‘Hope In The Dark’ by Rebecca Splint. It's so wise, calm and reassuring about how to keep going in dark times. It reminds me that there is always plenty going on to be proud of, excited by and involved with, so take courage! Josie Long – Something Better, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Saturday 11 February 2017, 8pm, £15/13

cclaimed by critics and audiences in theatres and churches throughout the UK, awardwinning actor George Dillon is presenting an unforgettable vision of Jesus in churches across Brighton, London and the South East during Lent this year as he performs a highly intense, very human and occasionally humorous solo staging of his own translation of the first Gospel, by candlelight, with 25% of the ticket sales going to support local homeless charities. Experience a stunning, virtuoso delivery of the greatest story ever told... as Jesus' followers first heard it... in a darkness illuminated purely by candlelight and the Word! Inspired by an encounter with Bob Geldof at Euston Station, created in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, and shortlisted for The Stage's 'Best Actor' Award in Edinburgh, Dillon’s epic, impassioned performance portrays Jesus not as a meek and mild lamb to the slaughter but as a contemporary raging fighter for God. Since the première at the Brighton Festival in 2002, Dillon has performed The Gospel of Matthew nearly 150 times in the UK, including three runs in Edinburgh and appearances at the Greenbelt, Soul in the City and Pentecost festivals as well as in Canada, Poland and Bermuda. "A mesmerising oneman

featured on Songs of Praise and on the cover of Salvation Army newspaper The War Cry. During Lent (1st March 14th April 2017) Dillon will be giving 20 performances in churches in Brighton, London and the South East. Tickets are just £10 (£5 concs) and will be available on the door or in advance from the church office (at most churches) or online from ticketsource.co.uk/dillon (0333 666 3366). should feel guilty laughing so much at JM Synge’s inflammatory play. In 1907 it caused furious riots, questioning as it did the masculinity, even the sanity, of the Irish male. However, it is no secret that actors and audiences love it for the incandescent flow of language, English in spelling but so very poetically Irish in idiom. The Little Theatre cast, led by Charlotte Atkinson and Nik Balfe, revelled in its beauty. There isn’t a weak link in this very accomplished ensemble and Nick Roche’s production flows so easily, sometimes helterskelter, through all the delightful twists of the plot. BRIGHTON LIGHTS WHAT TO DO IN THE CITY > MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WITH JOE FULLER

1

Local band grasshopper are disarmingly young, especially considering how good they are. There are postpunk moments as well as a shoegaze sheen, and some songs remind me of Broadcast. Tuval & Strings and Murder Boys support, and it's at a great small venue in Coachwerks so should be an atmospheric gig. Coachwerks, 11 Feb, 8pm, £5

2

Thought Forms plunge deeper depths tonewise than many other guitar bands with a hazy ambiance and Stone Roseslike drawling vocals. Fans of early Velvet Underground’s chiming guitars or the languor of The Brian Jonestown Massacre might well find much to love at this gig.

The Hope & Ruin, 13 Feb, 8pm, £8

3

The Worthing Symphony Orchestra present some big melodies this Sunday. I always love the dynamic of the piano and orchestra in a concert setting, and it will be exciting to see what Ukrainian pianist Olga Paliy brings to Mendelssohn's first piano concerto. Also featuring will be Beethoven's second symphony and the wedding cake caprice by Saint Saëns.

Assembly Hall, Worthing, 12 Feb, 2.45pm

4

Playwright Gail Louw directs her own play Two Sisters, set in Israel at the turn of the century. The sisters are played by Anne Kavanagh and Norma Cohen, and the play has been praised by Broadway World as “an exquisite play that will resonate with anyone who's ever been part of a family”. Room 101 BBC1, 8.30pm Pet hates and peeves come under scrutiny as Frank Skinner hosts the comedy panel show that seems to conduct three interviews at the same time. Nifty. This week’s celebrities sharing their wit and disgust are Brighton favourite Zoe Lyons, Joe Lycett and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson.

The Last Leg Channel 4, 10pm With the political landscape changing faster than Philias Fogg’s postcode, it’s good to have Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe on hand to pick through the avalanche of ‘fake news’ and ‘factoids’ with humour and grace. MONDAY 13 The Good Karma Hospital ITV1, 9pm ITV have twigged that picking up an emergency services drama and dropping it in a tropical location (well done BBC with Death In Paradise) makes for good telly. Welcome the medical drama set in southern India starring Neil Morrissey and Amanda Redman. This week a snake catcher’s luck appears to have run out.

The Halcyon ITV1, 9pm The drama in a plush hotel in wartime London continues. Opulence and danger – surely that’s the equation for pretty much every James Bond plot! It’s here too, and The Halcyon is recovering from tragedy. The hotel is also under increasing pressure from the police. Oh, and Freddie’s back.

First Dates Channel 4, 9pm Fred and the gang may have had a grand time on the South of France with First Dates Hotel, but they’re back whispering Cupid’s sweet nothings in good old Blighty again. Not that everyone hears love’s call, as demonstrated by the mixed levels of success for tonight’s romantic hopefuls.
