Q
ueer film strand Eyes Wide Open's screening of Moonlight at the Duke of York's made for a brilliant Valentine's Day evening. I'm a romantic person but I dislike a lot of the cloying, mawkish sentimentality that Valentine's Day elicits. I’m also not a fan of the sense of sectarianism, with the us and them mentality of those in relationships vs. those who are not. It's a false dichotomy anyway, which conjures up images of the happy and the unhappy, those with and those without, which isn't borne out by reality. I mention this because I know some people who were unhappy last Tuesday because they weren't with a partner, in case you're wondering why I'm waffling on about it. I think that social media can also add to these constructed mythologies of happiness, wherein selfpromoting types celebrate their relationships while making some singletons feel awkward about themselves. It doesn't matter to you as a reader if I was with a partner, with friends, or was alone for the Moonlight screening. The crowd was friendly, creating a nice atmosphere while the whole auditorium was silently, communally riveted by the drama. The film was brilliant: I was wary that it would be overblown Oscar bait but instead it's a focused, moving, beautiful movie with memorably understated performances. Like a Jane Austen novel, I don't know if I've ever wanted someone to kiss someone more. So I'd like to thank Eyes Wide Open for arranging the early preview so we could do something a bit different on Valentine's Day. It was an antidotal balm.

RAMBERT > Ghost Dances, Flight, and Tomorrow arrive
R
ambert, Britain’s national dance company, returns to Theatre Royal Brighton with an exciting programme combining classic repertoire alongside new work. The programme features the much anticipated revival of Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances, returning to UK stages for the first time in over 13 years. Originally created in 1981 as a tribute to the victims of political oppression in South America, it is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated contemporary dance works of its generation. It tells stories of love and compassion as death, in the form of the iconic ‘ghost dancers’, interrupts the lives of a series of ordinary people. Visually referencing Day of the Dead celebrations and set to the bewitching rhythms of traditional Latin American songs it is a moving, intensely human work.
“ Set to the bewitching rhythms of traditional Latin American songs ” Flight is a new work by former Rambert dancer Malgorzata Dzierzon that reflects on ideas of migration and borders. Dzierzon’s first work for the company is inspired by her own experiences of travel and migration as well as other stories, images and overheard conversations. A moving set and multimedia projections by video designer Luke Halls create an ever shifting backdrop as the dancers dramatise the mix of hope and fear that make up the migrant experience of leaving one home in search of another. Completing the programme is Tomorrow by Lucy Guerin, which inhabits the dark and dangerous world of Macbeth. This abstract retelling of one of Shakespeare’s seminal works focuses on some of the main driving themes of the play – fate and inevitability. VEGFEST > Celebrity vegans hit the Brighton Centre
T
he weekend of 11th to 12th March sees the 9th annual VegfestUK Brighton event at The Brighton Centre, and the celebrity vegan guest list just seems to get longer every year, with some especially big hitters for 2017. Vegan strongman Patrik Baboumian is the star of the show in more ways than one – apart from being absolutely huge, he is also a world champion strongman and vegan for a numbers of years now. He’s visiting on the Sunday and will be presenting in front of 200 visitors as well as joining a panel on easy veganism – whilst helping transform the rather tired and dated vegan stereotype of ‘weak’ and ‘feeble to ‘extremely strong’ and ‘really rather large’ as well as being one of the highest achievers on the planet in his chosen field.
“ The rise in all things vegan continues to escalate ” Actor Peter Egan of Downton Abbey fame is another guest of honour at the event, which sees over 200 stalls and 20 caterers packed with the latest vegan products and food, and will be joined by another well known TV personality, presenter Wendy Turner Webster, who many will know from the much loved TV series Pet Rescue. And some highly achieving vegan athletes will also be joining the estimated 12,000 visitors, with World Record Holding cyclist Kate Strong, Belgian cyclist Christine Vardaros, professional
Carl Donnelly
English freerunner Tim Shieff and extreme marathon runner Fiona Oakes also amongst the guests. Vegan comedian Carl Donnelly is a well known name from the independent comedy circuit, heading up a vegan comedy festival on the Sunday along with Chris Stokes. The show also features live bands, a vegan film festival, kids areas, Teen Zones, Mature Zones, a number of vegan cookery demos and over 100 talks and presentations from speakers and presenters as the rise in all things vegan continues to escalate across the UK. VegFest, The Brighton Centre, 1112 March, 11am6pm (Saturday) and 10am5pm (Sunday), £7 a day or £10 for the whole weekend Tickets available to buy at www.brighton.vegfest.co.uk/admission

NANGLE NATTERS Victoria Nangle @latestvicky
> The end is nigh?
H
ow was your weekend? Grand. Brilliant. Without a lapse in the marvellous good times? How are you feeling? Like crap. Everything's rubbish. What not even bunny videos can crack a smile? Well, maybe a twitchy nose offers a bit of respite. I’ve been hearing a lot of polarisation of feelings, that only gets amplified in the echo chamber of social media. Everyone is scared. Everyone is suspicious. Everyone is overwhelmed by global affairs. All of the time. 24 hours a day. And nobody is sleeping – ever – despite the onslaught of suggested remedies that can be found in the Facebook thread. And if you read or say these things enough times it's as if they become the truth. It's like when you half remember a conversation with a friend and then realise it was between Samwise and Frodo in last week's Lord of the Rings marathon. I’ll remember a story I told about an event sometimes better than the event itself. Mark Thomas’ The Red Shed show last year spent a long time with him trying to research whether his own memory was true or just a good story he’d retold a lot and now believed. We’re good at convincing. Especially if the outcome is a lot more simple than the truth. I like to remind myself that how I feel now is not how I feel always. And that goes for the good times as well as the bad. I'm riding high, having a glorious day out with my best beloved, just the two of us, grinning like fools and I'll quietly take a mental snapshot. This is a good time. And I'll file it away to remember when things aren't so rosy or sunny. When I hear that Russia is repealing laws protecting women from domestic violence, when all I see are articles fearing international despotic rulers and their increasingly erratic behaviour, it can leave
me flinching at every news source. Believing that this is 'always' and how it is in every corner of the globe. Which it isn't. As frequent articles from Canada and Scandinavia encouragingly proclaim. I think what I'm trying to say is; everything changes. Seems basic enough but as generalisations are bandied about and hysterical reactions encouraged everywhere from Big Brother to CNN it's good to know that this moment in time is not how things will always be. They’re also not the full story. Imagine the reels of news stories that came out during World War Two and compare it to the libraries of books that are now written trying to explain even just a fraction of what happened. I feel like news is being shouted at me with perspective losing out to volume far too many times. The big thing to take into account is how much we can affect what is yet to come what the change from now will move into. It’s far too easy to despair of ‘people’ – people are the ones that got us into this almighty pit of a mess, they’re all yucky, and let’s put up a wall to keep them away. Oh, now no one is here to help me change a duvet cover. ‘People’ are the ones who introduced the National Health Service to us less than 70 years ago. They’re the ones who more recently brought gay marriage into law in this country. People went on marches all over the world to have their voices heard only last month. Everything is not terrible and everything is not brilliant. We don't live in a screen print of black and white. And if it feels like we are, surely that's the best time to stop and seek out the finer shades and colours of the world.
“ I feel like news is being shouted at me with perspective losing out to volume far too many times ”

KIERAN HODGSON
> Maestro earned Kieran Hodgson his second Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination, he’s recently had his own BBC Radio 4 sitcom commissioned, and he’s coming to Brighton! Victoria Nangle finds out more. Would you say that you are more of a musical comedian, or a comedian who knows a lot about music? I'd probably be in a third category of comedian who knows just enough about music to write a show about being a guy who likes writing music despite not knowing enough about music to do so. It's a new and exciting genre. Your show is called ‘Maestro’. Traditionally that has been translated as meaning ‘master’ or ‘teacher’. Who would you say has taught you the most – in person, and by example? That's a fantastic question! I mean, the obvious answer is my parents, who taught me to walk and socialise and so on. But in the nonfamilial realm I think I've probably learnt the most from The League of Gentlemen by example and, in person, from my old sketch group partners, Joe Markham, Joe Parham and Tom Meltzer. Those guys taught me all the rules and gave me a career into the bargain. What instrument would you most like to be able to take a pill and know completely? I would love to be able to know the piano completely. I mean, I can already play the piano but to such a mediocre
standard that it's of no use in party or singalong situations. Imagine how nice it would be to just sit down and whack out Moon River for all your friends! Maestro has been described as your most personal show to date. Was there ever a time when you had to deliberate whether you felt okay sharing so much of yourself every night in cities you don’t live in? I think that sharing personal details in strange cities is the easy part! It's sharing those things in front of the people closest to you that I find scary, especially when you may or may not possibly have maybe occasionally just a bit used
If love sings, what musical noises do heartbreak, adventure and curiosity make? Heartbreak is a loud wail that becomes a low moan, never running out of breath. Adventure is a some sort of brass fanfare, probably in 6/8 time with the strings doing a heck of a lot of arpeggios underneath. Curiosity is that thing the guy did where he filmed his cat playing the piano. You’ve been seen doing more acting of late, in Upstart Crow, We’re Doomed The Dad’s Army Story and Jonathan Creek. What would be your dream role to play from a favourite book?
“ I think I've probably learnt the most from The League of Gentlemen by example ”
things to do with them in the show. Last year I did my previous show, Lance, in my home town to a crowd of old teachers, Scout leaders and school friends. It was exhilarating but terrifying, and I'm not sure I'll do that again for a while.
One day I'd love to give the world my Porthos from The Three Musketeers. In most films they make him out to be this buffoonish glutton, but in the novel he's also incredibly vain and avaricious as well. Come the sequel books he seems to acquire superpowers
and is able to eat a whole deer and lift tree trunks above his head. Depardieu did not do him justice. Radio involves a great freedom of expression of music and comedy combining. Who would you most like to have – alive or dead – on a radio bill show of your own programming? I would love to have my friend Matt Fraser with me so that we could recreate our illfated university radio show 'Classical Snaptin'. It had an average listenership of 7, I was free to play pieces of music an hour and a half long, and due to the unreliability of the broadcast equipment our most frequent phonein question was 'Can you hear the show?'. Reinstated to its proper place on Radio 3 prime time, the new series of Snaptin’ would boast some of history's least cooperative musical guests, such as Beethoven and Henry VIII. What is the most fun you can have for a pound? My publicist has told me I need to plug the show more in interviews so I'm going to go with one tenth of my show, 'Maestro', at The Old Market. Kieran Hodgson – Maestro, The Old Market, Saturday 25 February 2017, 8pm, £10/8

STAGE > Season's greetings
N
o, it's not a very premature yuletide announcement but it is the time when two of the South East's, if not the UK's festivals reveal their programmes for 2017. Yes the Brighton Festival, now in its 51st year has just launched their programme for May and Chichester Festival Theatre have announced their own summer festival programme. In Brighton the guest director is Kate Tempest who is bringing her own slant to the proceedings with a real emphasis on exposing the arts to as wide an audience as possible. Her mission statement, and it does feel like a mission she is passionate about, includes the statement "Everyday Epic". It's a great idea and one that she explains with an endearing clarity. When it comes to theatre the Brighton Festival has an amazing reputation for excellence and for bringing the very best of stage work from around the globe. This year there will inevitably be a clamour for tickets to see a new trilogy of plays by the company that two years ago presented the Apple Family trilogy. The Gabriels by Tony Award Winning playwright Richard Nelson is set in real time during a turbulent US election year. Local actor/director/creator Tim Crouch returns this year with an exciting new project. Crouch has achieved global acclaim for his innovative and often startling work and in this new work he is collaborating

with Tony Birch and Julia Crouch for an outdoor event that will take place throughout May in Shoreham Harbour. This is the kind of experiential theatre that always excites and in the hands of Crouch and friends promises to be a highlight of the coming festival. Internationally acclaimed Kneehigh are also back with their adaptation of the Cornish legend Tristan and Yseult. Director and adaptor Emma Rice has created many notable stage productions, including Brief Encounter and Rebecca but this particular production remains one of the company's most loved shows. This is only the tip of an iceberg of great work in May this year.
The Gabriels
“ Only the tip of an iceberg of great work ”
Over in Chichester the programme is as exciting as ever with the announcement that Sir Ian McKellen will be appearing in an ensemble production of King Lear. McKellen, who has recently won massive praise for a new production of Harold Pinter's No Man's Land, will no doubt be the hottest ticket on the theatre scene. In recent years Chichester Festival Theatre have of course made a massive impact in the world of musical theatre revivals with nearly every new production being transferred, to great acclaim, into the West End. This year their two musical offerings will be Fiddler on The Roof starring Omid Djalili and TracyAnn Oberman and a new production of Caroline, or Change.
Kate Tempest
Sir Ian McKellen
Richard Wilson will star as the headmaster in Alan Bennett's Forty Years On in a production directed by Daniel Evans and Jonathan Kent will direct Sweet Bird of Youth by Tennessee Williams. Again the very tip of an iceberg of excellent theatre programmed with skill to appeal to the widest of audiences.
Take a close look at both programmes too to find out the very best ticket deals, especially those aimed at younger audience members and group bookings. For more information go to www.brightonfestival.org, box office 01273 709709 And www.cft.org.uk, box office 01243 781312

REVIEWS > Our verdicts on Peter James’ latest adaptation, karaoke politicism & a courtroom drama
“ Don’t be wrongfooted.
There’s a darker heart here. ” Josie Long: Something Better rrive early and you’ll be greeted by Long, already onstage, blasting music out of her phone and singing karaoke. Don’t be wrongfooted. There’s a darker heart here, with Long, having started out wanting to write a positive show, being forced to face Brexit headon. Those still hurting from that will find some release (and a lot of laughs) in her account of her horror and political self doubt after the events of last year. Long bounces from topic to topic, throwing in some fun diversions about aging and the wonders of Pinot Grigio, in a way that may leave you a little fatigued but never left behind. Then, at the end, she’ll karaoke you out, too.

Not Dead Enough or his third foray into theatre Peter James and his stage adaptor Shaun McKenna have found a fine balance. Transferring a complex crime story set in multiple locations to the stage is no mean feat, but this time, with a clever set and a fine cast, they really pull it off. Roy Grace is so firmly implanted in the minds of Peter James fans that it must be difficult for any producer to find the right man for the job, but in Shane Ritchie, they have found the best yet. He captures the unassuming intensity of the character well and reveals the inner anger and demons with a deft hand. Good to see that his missing wife Sandy is referred to, an insight into why he is the man he is. Laura Whitmore is delightful as his feisty lover Cleo and Michael Quartey delivers all the cheeky charm that one hopes to see in Glenn Branson. Stephen Billington has perhaps the toughest time as Brian Bishop, facing a barrage of interrogation as the plot twists and turns, and how it twists and turns in true Peter Jamesian fashion, but he delivers a brilliant performance throughout. This is a thrilling thriller that had the audience on the edges of our seats, even though many of us had already read the novel.

★★★★★ The Verdict ood courtroom dramas build their tension slowly, seasoning it with human frailty, humour and a touch of romance. This excellent production goes further. The cast holds back, making it seem workaday, normal and real. In a black&white legal fiction we could easily believe Jack Shepherd’s veteran Jewish lawyer – it is a loser’s case, take the money! It’s difficult to like the almost burnedout, alcoholic highflier (Clive Mantle) but we sort of do. There are few surprises or moments of ‘drama’ but this carefully measured, entertaining 1980s study of legality and ethics is still valid in these days of alternate truth.

I enjoy synth nostalgia and the reinvigoration of the keyboard since it reminds me of big melodies, discos and the fun of pop in general. Brighton duo AK/DK use live drums in their stage setup (which works very well for Caribou) and there’s also fuzz, disco and punk directions for a varied night out.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is possibly my favourite book, with outstanding, effulgent prose. A new stage adaptation is therefore something to cheer, playing in Brighton after two showings in London. It will be performed in Russian with English subtitles.

The Castalian Quartet are playing a particularly exciting coffee concert which features a brilliant recent piece by British composer Thomas Adès. Beethoven and Haydn quartets will also feature on the bill, and 8 to 25 year olds can go for free: you just need to talk to the Brighton Dome ticket office about the Cavatina Scheme.

A
nyone who is watching my new TV show, AK Soufflé, and if not why not, will have spotted that I have a natural gift for spotting the saucy nature of anything my guests might say, and no more so than when I welcomed Tom Wooldridge from The Terence Higgins Trust to the studio. Poor Tom, poor, poor Tom. But it has to be said that his mission was to promote their Shrove Tuesday event, the Big Toss Off, yes, you read that right. The Terence Higgins Trust has been in action from very early on in the history of HIV and AIDs and has been campaigning and fund raising ever since. Back at the start HIV was seen as a death sentence, with no known medication there was little hope for those who were diagnosed. But it wasn't only the life shortening condition, it was the stigma attached to it that caused much of the problem. This terrible disease raged havoc with both men and women, let's not forget that this terrible virus was an equal opportunity disease and did not differentiate between either men, women or gay or straight. Many diagnosed would give up work and for many reasons, ill health, depression and perhaps most frightening of all prejudice. The stigma attached meant that many would be hounded from their jobs by the illinformed who in many cases thought that they might be at risk from sharing coffee cups, cutlery, desks… We've come a long way and in many ways the Terence Higgins Trust has been instrumental in this. Medication means that people live long and healthy lives, but the battle is not over, here in the UK things might seem good, and for many it is. But for those long term survivors of early diagnoses, those who lost their jobs, many now live in poverty. It is a massive issue that the THT is keen to highlight and to tackle. Tom came in and tackled it in a lighthearted way, but the message was strong. If like me you enjoy a nice pancake, I'm a purist so like fresh lemon juice and sugar, but go mad and go mad raising money for the THT. You can get the full details and register for their event and to receive a pack containing recipes, buntings and much more at tossoff.tht.org.uk Thank you for coming along Tom and apologies for my very saucy behaviour!
“ Apologies for my saucy behaviour! ”

W
e live in a world of angry people, and with good reason: there’s a lot to be angry about. But is anger helpful, and is it even necessary? When I was younger I thought that anger was helpful. I reasoned that it was an emotion that played its designed part like any other. I assumed that it was there to propel you into action by burning away fear and inertia. But the simple and well known (and my personal favourite) adage ‘holding onto anger is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die’ changed my mind. The logic of the saying argues that anger is not a source of motivation, but rather toxification. Though that might seem obvious to some, it was a revelation for my child mind. As I pondered this new way of thinking I became increasingly repelled by the thought of anger. But as much as I tried to avoid it I couldn’t keep the lid on the pot when whatever triviality caused me to bubble over. I may have been poisoning myself before, but now I was doing it knowingly, and that was somehow even worse. So I came back to my previous assumption that anger had to have its intended function. Following the trail of triggers I deduced that anger came from passion, whether it’s being passionately against someone coming to dinner, or passionate about which religions, sexualities, genders and races deserve what kind of treatment. Regardless, passion can only take root and grow within issues you care about. So if you care about something, rage is never the answer. Passion is likened to fire because the two burn in the same way. Controlled, passion provides a warmth of contentment within us, fosters the life of creativity, and generates a light within us that we can then share with the world. Eventually I realised that anger was the product of losing control of this passion. Uncontrolled passion becomes an inferno, an anger that relentlessly consumes us and overrides our other faculties. My more recent revelation is that this loss of control, this burst of anger, is just a kneejerk reaction to being hurt. Under every layer of rage is a root of pain. Anger is the energy of our passion twisted into a fiery wall to protect our tenderer spots. It is an instinctive defence mechanism. If we can learn to control this reaction we can stop that wall from going up. If we can stop hiding behind anger we can expose our hurts and pains, and only then can we begin to heal ourselves, and each other.

passion becomes an inferno ”

O
nce in a while you stray upon a hidden gem. This time I have to thank my friend Mr F for inviting me along to one of my old haunts, The Sir Charles Napier in Southover Street. I had been a regular Sunday night quizzer for longer than I care to remember but recently they ditched the quiz and we stopped going. Now I have good reason to return and that reason is some very interesting food.
“ Full marks to the landlord for what must be a wellkept cellar ” I love spice, love heat and I love to try new things so it was with high hopes that I invited Mr F for a predinner Caesar at my place before a bracing yomp over muesli mountain for a spot of supper. The kitchen has been taken over by a rather unassuming young man who is recreating the dishes of his childhood as cooked by his mother and family, a family exiled from Uganda in the terrifying reign of the despot Idi Amin. It's an unusual cuisine that grew out of an immigrant Indian community in that country before they were cruelly turfed out. History is a terrible tale for the most part, but the arrival of this interesting food is certainly to be welcomed. The menu is very short, but the kitchen is very small so that is a good thing. We started by ordering the chicken samosas, the meat balls and the cassava chips. I love a good meatball and these were not only very tasty but very generous. I wouldn't want to do the chef out of business but you will definitely want to share these tender treats. The chicken samosa were piping hot, but after being instructed to poke a hole into the top and squeeze fresh lemon LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
into their heart, they were truly exceptional, again share a portion. I have had bad experiences of cassava, it can be dry, floury and flavourless – not here. These chips were steamy hot, sweet, creamy even and when dipped in the superb chutneys and tamarind sauce they had us both agreeing that this was something of a find. For our main courses we chose the lamb dish and the chicken thighs. The lamb was very tasty, very tender and succulent and the spicing was judiciously balanced so that we could actually taste the meat's own characteristics, a factor so often lost with badly and overspiced food. What is it about food so hot that it wrecks your mouth on eating and make its presence know the next morning – not for me. I liked the chicken dish but not as much, it was good but not as strikingly delicious as the lamb. The side dishes however were another story and the rice was perfect, the kichidi, forgive my phonetic spelling, a triumphant delight, creamy and sweet soft lentils and rice wallowing in a shed load of butter, what's not to like, well except that lentils do my gout no good. But for a dish as good as this I was prepared to suffer. And the parathas very good indeed, very good. Two other things make this a great find, first great beers and well kept beers too. We really enjoyed the two pints that we each quaffed and full marks to the landlord for what must be a wellkept cellar. Secondly, and by no means least, the sensibly affordable pricing policy, this is great food at slender prices, and in good sized portions too. Thirdly, how nice is it to see a packed pub on a Tuesday night, full of people chatting to each other, drinking good beer and enjoying great food. In other words I really liked this mix of East African Street food and Gujarati dishes and I hope to return very soon. BRIDGET CHRISTIE > Whichever way you voted in June's European Union referendum, the Brexit result was seismic – no more so than for Bridget Christie. She speaks with Veronica Lee about the show that is her reaction.
S
tunned by the outcome, Bridget Christie decided to ditch the show she was preparing to take to the Edinburgh Fringe last year and – almost overnight – write a new one about Brexit. Because You Demanded It was the result – which received rave reviews and sold out its entire run and now she is touring an expanded and updated version. “It was a huge moment in politics,” says the Gloucester born comic of the EU vote, “and it would have felt like a real failure on my part not to talk about it. I was gutted, but I needed to make sense of it. Lots of people I know voted Leave.... But although she herself is a fervent Remainer, Bridget doesn't want to preach to the converted – she is playing dates in several towns that voted firmly to Leave – and wants Leave voters to come along too. “More than any other show I've done,” she says, “this one has been the most divisive, in terms of audience reaction”. She is avowedly on the left of politics, but says: “I don't know what right and left means any more, and Brexit has changed everything, the way we talk about politics, the way it's reported. I might find myself agreeing on the EU with somebody whose views on everything else I hate, then I’ll read an article or see someone 'from the left' who I’ve always agreed with, that’s proLeave,
and I think, 'How can you possibly think that?'. Nothing is clearcut any more. And even my core audience – lefty, feminist, Guardianreading – is split, and that's a reflection of broader society. But if you think a show about Brexit may be a bit heavygoing, fear not. Bridget is an entertaining host who leavens the passionate discourse with much faux outrage, and the show is full of playful mockery.
“ It's important
to engage with differing views ” It was critically acclaimed in Edinburgh, and it covers all sorts of subjects from the BBC and Ladybird books to parenthood and experts and even King Charles II gets a mention. The show has expanded since its Edinburgh outing. “So much more has happened since the vote, including the growth of the “altright” and Donald Trump's election, and obviously I needed to update it. I also talk more about Nigel Farage than I did in Edinburgh,” the comic says drily. Is there a message in the show? “No, not really, not intentionally, anyway,” she
responds. “I just write about what I’m interested in and passionate about. I do enjoy the challenge of trying to talk about serious or important things in a funny way, though. I’m very interested in that process. It’s like a puzzle you have to work out. So there isn’t a message as such, but I did want the show to be a reminder of who did what and why during the campaign. Anyway, if people agree with me, then great, but equally it's important to engage with differing views. I want the audience to leave the show laughing and upbeat. The blurb for the show, she reminds me, is: “If you didn’t want to leave the EU, or you did, but now don’t, then this is absolutely the show for you. If you did want to leave the EU you will still find it funny, but for different reasons, as you witness the liberal female comedian’s exasperated and despairing meltdown.” She uses a clever gardening metaphor to tackle some of the big issues, such as the nature of Britishness and immigration, centring on the fuchsia that her mother, an Irish immigrant, lovingly tended in the home where Bridget grew up. Fuchsias, for the nongardeners among you, are nonnative plants but thrive in British soil. I ask how she came up with that theme. “I never thought I would have a garden of my own,” Bridget says, referring to
the home she shares in north London with her husband and their two young children. “I genuinely love it and find it really therapeutic; it's a great way to switch off “When I was planting my roses it struck me that I will not see my garden mature, and that set me thinking about the futility of creating and nurturing things. But you can't not fall in love because you might have your heart broken, or not have children because you're terrified of what could happen to them. I thought I could incorporate those feelings into the show, and it strikes me that people always get that bit because we can all relate to loss and fear. The show she had planned to do last year – which she had started previewing before the EU vote, and which may see life in 2018 was inspired by American surgeon Atul Gawande's book Being Mortal, and is her reflection on death, dying and the possibility of an afterlife. More light comedy, I say, and Bridget laughs. “I just thought there may be a show in all of that – in something we're all facing but we don't really talk about,” she says. “I thought I might be able to make it funny. But then the Brexit vote came and death sort of became irrelevant.” Bridget Christie: Because You Demanded It is at Brighton Dome on Saturday 4 March, 8pm, £17

MONDAY 27 The Good Karma Hospital ITV1, 9pm More hospital drama in the tropics. On the same day that Ram is attending a lavish Indian wedding he has a zinger of a clash with Lydia when a medical case becomes personal. Ruby treats a British patient whose story doesn’t quite make sense, and questions where she really belongs. Again. Stick with the programme, Rubes.
Meet The Lords BBC2, 9pm If you went to work in a literally gilded office, it might be understandable if you were a little eccentric. This new series follows the larger than life characters that populate the House of Lords. It’s been an incredible political landscape to be behind the political scenes in, so feast on this.
Broadchurch ITV1, 9pm Series three sees the coastal Bafta award-winning drama back with DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller investigating a serious sexual assault. The sleepy Dorset landscape is shaken, but bound to be dramatically twisted and turned in the forthcoming weeks. Gotta love quality drama.
