hat books have you enjoyed recently? I'm trying something different at the moment in reading two books at the same time, for two reasons. Firstly, I'm considering joining a book club so need to read The Green Road before the meeting. The second reason is that the other book I'm reading is Infinite Jest, which is far and away the longest book I have ever embarked upon. Bleak House is probably second place in my tome experience, but Infinite Jest is something else: coming in at approximately 200,000 more words on 900+ thinlymargined pages of tiny font, plus about 150 pages of footnotes. A dip into something more accessible timewise is therefore welcome, although I'm worried I won't be able to hold all the information if I divide my attention too widely. Had I seen Infinite Jest before getting it I might have felt too daunted, but I'm glad I've dived in now. It's a bewitching book, switching between a huge cast of characters with precious little hand holding, and some of the vignettes have been a startling and refreshing mix of humour, melancholy and absurdity. The book is written in wildly different styles, ranging from the esoteric eloquence of Nabokov, to Irvine Welshtype phonetic head wrangling or the parlance of like, American teens. One small section of only six pages solely devoted to a drug addict in dire straits was a particularly vivid, entertaining passage for example. I thought I'd ask you for book recommendations, since they are often shared personally in my experience as opposed to other art forms I’m used to hearing more about in magazines, online, TV and the radio etc. I'm a fan of Nabokov, Chabon, Franzen, Salinger, Tartt, Austen, Rowling and many more so if you have any recommendations for me (or would like some!) then send me an email.

T H E AT R E > Artistic Director Daniel Evans explains why the joy and laughter of Alan Bennett’s play Forty Years On is perfect to open the Festival

C

hichester Festival Theatre’s 2017 season kicks off this month with a new production of Alan Bennett’s first play, Forty Years On, set in a school on the South Downs on the day the headmaster retires. Chichester’s new Artistic Director Daniel Evans is directing the production: why has he chosen this particular play? “There are several reasons for doing Forty Years On”, says Daniel. “The first is that Alan Bennett is one of our most beloved living playwrights. The second is that the play requires us to work with a large group of young people from our community. “The third reason is that the play contains much joy and laughter, and it was important that we began our Festival season at Chichester with a proper sense of joy, and that we were inviting our audience to have a great time. “Finally, thematically the play is incredibly interesting because it’s about an England at a crossroads. It was written in 1968 at a time of great social change, and I think we’re also at a time now of great social change. The play looks at an England which is being lost while also looking towards the future. “The play is still very, very funny and at the same time very poignant”, Daniel reflects. “More than any other playwright I can think of, Alan Bennett somehow manages to put both those things together at the same time – you can be laughing through your tears. “We have a great actor in the leading role: Richard Wilson. People know him most famously, of course, as Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave. He is a comedy genius.” Forty Years On is the first of a wealth of contrasting plays and musicals which audiences can look forward to during Festival 2017. “As a complement to the Alan Bennett, we have a musical on in the Minerva called Caroline, Or Change, about a black maid living with a Jewish family in Louisiana in 1963,” says Daniel. “It’s a political and very moving piece with wonderful music. “If [Executive Director] Rachel Tackley and I had just one hope for our first season, it would be that Chichester Festival Theatre will be a place where everyone in this region, from all kinds of backgrounds and creeds, feels welcome.” For full details and tickets for Festival 2017, visit cft.org.uk.

good while ago a Canadian friend of mine was explaining why many of her family members had voted against free healthcare and for tax cuts for the rich. “They think they’re rich,” she told me. “Are they rich?” I asked. “No.” Was the answer. But the selfidentity of being ‘rich’ was so important to them that they endorsed the tax breaks happily. They were told that this was something that the ‘rich’ benefited from so it must be good for them. Because they couldn’t possibly be ‘comfortably off’ or even ‘poor’ themselves. Anything other than ‘rich’. Ringing any bells Mr Chancellor Of The Exchequer?

“ We’re still a first world country, we’ve got running water that you can drink ” Britain does not rule the waves. Britain is in a massive state of flux, of change which is likely to be remembered historically. It is that captain of the waves that keeps insisting that everything is okay and if we just don’t look at the storm too hard it’ll most probably go away and sort itself out of its own accord. The impression is, we may be feeling the squeeze a bit financially but there’s bound to be a few pound coins down the back of the sofa that’ll sort us out – after all, we’re rich. We’re not. I mean we’re still a first world country, we’ve got running water that you can drink from the tap and electricity and transport infrastructure – but we also have food banks growing at an alarming rate, ruthless cuts to muchneeded benefits for the disabled (and everyone else), charities taking the strain when the government used to be present, and now school girls in Leeds taking days off from school every month because they can’t afford to buy sanitary products when Auntie Flo comes to visit. This will not be fixed by loose change in furniture. Britain is not poor, but if it keeps living it up ignoring the big tax dodgers and saying that school libraries aren’t really very important, the infrastructure will crumble. Alright, I feel like I should be holding a placard bemoaning; “The end is nigh”, but we’re already being told of how squeezed the NHS is and felt the strain for longer than the last year of industrial action with the trains. How many weekends have not had ‘delays due to works’? There’s got to be an indie band album with that title due out soon simply for the familiarity value. Somewhere along the way priorities seemed to shift for the government and basic human needs were overlooked. That needs to change. Because a change is acoming, and we need it to be for the good. 6 | LATEST 7

round the world, people are being bullied this very moment. There are many types of bullying: cyber bullying, physical harm, verbal abuse... Are you or have you ever been bullied at school? Perhaps you have been the bully? Well, it’s time we stop, and work together to beat bullying. I believe that schools do not do enough to stop bullying: victims have hurt themselves and even committed suicide over the years. 80% of children agree that schools are not doing enough to prevent bullying in or outside the classroom. I want to stop people from suffering from bullying. People not only suffer through bullying, but suffer a system that does not recognise the problem. Some schools do have assemblies, but these can be easily ignored by bullies. Also, some teachers think they have dealt with bullying with 1:1 and group talks, but in a few weeks’ time they move on and forget about it and the bullying can resurface. When someone is being the bully, it is most likely that they have a bad life at home and are envious of the victim. They could also just think it is a small joke and do not realise how hurtful it can be.

“ It may be the bullies need real help and counseling ” A way you could try and stop the bully is by showing them how the victim feels when they are being bullied. It may be the bullies need real help and counseling. Other people could argue that verbal bullying is just like joking around and that people are just overreacting. People might have this opinion because they just simply do not care about bullying or they have not experienced it and do not know what it feels like. Even though most schools do their best to stop bullying with talks, assemblies and posters it still is not enough. An easy way to stop cyber bullying is to keep the bullies off the computers and ban them from having phones both at home and school. This is why parents need to be involved what happens in school. More public assemblies, private talks and ongoing reminders are ways that bullying could be prevented. If you are being bullied, you should tell your parents or a teacher who you can trust. And if you are bullying someone, it’s time to stop the cycle and think about how upset they will be and how your hurt is affecting them. Nine students from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy have been writing their own articles about something that matters to them, as part of Little Green Pig's weekly afterschool Tuesday club. ROB BECKETT > James Rampton talks to the Taskmaster and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown comedian

R

ob Beckett is one of the most popular comedians in the country. His standup shows sell out at the drop of a hat, as audiences are attracted to his brilliant sense of humour, his superb material, his livewire stage presence and his dazzling, megawatt likability. What makes the 30yearold appealing is the fact that he does not take his huge success for granted. "I just try and be a normal bloke," observes Rob, who is also the popular host of the Absolute Radio show,

Rock'n'Roll Football. "You don't need to be diva ish in this business. At the end of the day, we're just chatting on stage. I'm genuinely grateful that people come to see me. If it wasn't for the audience, I wouldn't have a jetwash – I'd just have an ordinary hose!" Rob, who gave a blistering performance at Channel 4's Comedy Gala at the 02 recently, goes on to explain the depth of his gratitude. "I've done hundreds of lowpaid jobs in my time. I used to work

in a flower market carrying around bags of compost. So the fact that I can now put my face on a poster and people will turn up for the show makes me so pleased! "When I started out as a comedian, I thought, ‘If I can just about make a living doing comedy, I'll be the happiest man in the world!' So, as you can imagine, I'm pretty happy now!" Mention of his audience brings us to the fact that one of Rob's trademarks is his wonderful relationship with the people who flock to his shows. The comedian, who between 2012 and 2014 copresented the ITV2 spinoff show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! NOW!, says that this stems from his natural curiosity. "I'm just nosey! I love talking to the audience and getting them involved. I really like hearing their stories. People do the strangest jobs. "Last night, for instance, someone in the audience told me he was a change manager at a company producing floret salads. So basically he's in charge of what leaves go in the salad! I like asking questions – it keeps the show fresh." Another element that keeps ‘Mouth of the South’ fresh is the fact that Rob never rests on his laurels: he makes sure his material is constantly evolving. The standup, who won the Amused Moose LaughOff in 2009, reflects that, "I don't want to feel desperate and that I have to hold on to certain bits. I don't want to be living in fear of altering a routine.

“ I'm as funny as I can be for 90 minutes ”

"For my own sense of self worth, I'd rather change it and let it progress. I enjoy that much more. That's how I can do 200 shows on a tour because it's always growing and changing. If I didn't do that, I'd have gone mad by now!" Rob, who also enjoys a thriving TV career and has

appeared on such shows as Mock the Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Live At The Apollo and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, reveals that on the ‘Mouth of the South’ tour he will be covering such downtoearth, relatable subjects as holidays, Christmas, cold calls and nights out. His routines work so well because they are taken from his own life. Rob, who hails from South London says that, "I adored the American standup Bill Hicks. He used to do fantastic routines about drugs and guns. After hearing that, I thought, 'No one will want to hear me talk about my life". "But then I saw Alan Davies and Peter Kay and realised you can be just as funny talking about nothing very much. If you walk into a pub and say to your mates, 'What about the new Kit Kats?', and you can be funny about that, I think that's quite an achievement." Rob adds that he never scripts a show with an over arching theme. According to the comedian, "I never write a show with a big narrative because I'd end up trying too hard and getting bored. Rob proceeds to underscore just how delighted he is by the way in which his comedy career has panned out. "I enjoy making people laugh so much. I'm as funny as I can be for 90 minutes. I try and take people's minds off things for an hour and a half. If you ever stop enjoying that, that's the moment to give up." He concludes that, "Before I did standup, I'd always been rubbish at everything. I was doing all sorts of terrible jobs on the minimum wage and living in a grotty flat in Lewisham. "Then I started doing comedy, and all of a sudden I finally found something I was good at. People were coming up to me after shows and saying, 'I was feeling down beforehand, but you've really cheered me up tonight'. What a lovely thing to hear! "At last I've discovered something I can do well, and I'm not letting it go!" I’m sure I’m not the only one who is very glad to hear that! here's been a foodie tsunami of dining related awards in the city of late. All of them with their own methods and mission statements and so on and so on. Personally I admire them all in their own right, whoever and wherever they spring from, public votes, expert votes, who cares really, the city, and the county, should be justifiably proud that it boasts a gastronomic scene that merits such attention. Three cheers for the lot of them I say, and thank heavens I live here and not in some epicurean wilderness. If you are one of those who thinks we have nowhere decent to eat then I challenge you to find a city with more options, whether that is based on price, innovation or any other criteria you care to chuck at it. One thing I have noticed though is that no matter where you look to seek advice on the best there is a pretty convincing cluster of places that all seem to hog the top spaces. Right up there, time after time, is 64 Degrees. I recently had to entertain two charming Chinese ladies from a TV delegation. I wanted to show them the city's food scene and how exciting British cuisine is, so it was off to see chef Michael Bremner and his team. If you are wondering why I didn't choose to take them somewhere oriental, surely they get enough of that back home. Even with a translator I thought it would be best to hand over the reins to chef Michael and let him select our menu. It was as ever an excellent idea, but regular readers will know that this is a course of action I often take. We drank a bottle of Ridgeview's award winning sparkling wine and indeed the one which had been served to the Chinese Premier on his last visit to Buckingham Palace, they really liked this and the delicious wine too. Pretty soon the dishes started to arrive. 64 Degrees create food which is ever changing, is based on seasonal produce and on genuinely local ingredients, and we were not disappointed. Dish after dish was a feast for the eyes, the nose and finally the tongue. There is excitement at every turn, surprises, bursts of flavour, brilliant contrasts of texture and of heat, shocks and then comforts... With each dish our guests' eyes opened wider and wider, and their mouths too. They ate with a delicate respect, as if being served jewels, and I have to agree that this food is indeed jewel like. Michael has had plenty of media attention in the last year, reaching the final of Great British Menu on the BBC, but for local food lovers he is a star above and beyond that, and that heady place at the top of the awards is more than well deserved.

T

he standard for storytelling is always being raised. Whether one looks at films, games, series or books all industries that deal in narratives have felt the sting of the unsatisfied public who now expect a masterpiece or their money back. Most contenders battle it out for the public’s favour by churning out deviations from a successful formula that are slight enough to not be risky but considerable enough to be lapped up as original. But in rare circumstances we are gifted with something that transcends these competitive squabbles by entering into new and exciting realms previously unimagined. Simon Amstell's Carnage is just that. In a brilliant vision that is commendably both humorous and sobering Amstell projects his audience into a future that is entirely vegan. The ingenuity of this move is that by basing his narrative in the future he cleverly frees himself from dealing with the resistance veganism faces in the present. Instead, he harks back to our present within a fictional timeline that tracks the build up to the emancipation of animal kind. In the process he discusses our disregard for animal welfare and our refusal to deal with the negative implications that the animal agriculture has on our climate with the alarm and bewilderment we would accredit to Elizabethans using lead based make up.

“ Thanks Simon Amstell for humanising me ” As the film plays out we become the pitied subjects of history living in dark, ignorant times, before the revelatory breakthroughs of the future. It shakes off the model adopted by most vegans that consists mainly of statistics and guilt and instead operates on the premise of the simple question ‘how will we look back on our treatment of animals’? Amstell's work is the kind that makes me grateful to have been born in the 21st century. It highlights how we are living through one of the most exciting periods in history, stood as we are at precipice of an era of upheaval and change. But more than that, it emphasises the importance of utopian fiction in a culture that is obsessed with dystopias. It is utopian fiction that offers the key to our future, by offering us visions of a golden world that is within our reach. Simon Amstell constructs a realistic chain of events, but it is up to us to make it come true. As a vegan I want to personally thank Simon Amstell for humanising me. But as a human I want to thank him for helping to expose the serious dangers of the human ego and bring back some sorely needed balance into the world. 10 | LATEST 7

I

was seeing the doctor for a regular check up, the annual one that men of my stately age get called in for. It was a GP that I had never seen before, but what of it, the service is stretched way beyond its strangulated means so I was not for complaining. He did all the usual stuff and then sat back, put down his pen and came out with rather a surprising line. "Do you go to a gym?" Well I don't think you need a degree in medicine to see that I do not, so the question was somewhat rhetorical. He followed on with this; "You must be the only gay man in Brighton that does not go to the gym." I was rather taken aback as I had never met him before and could only assume that he was making an assumption. Of course I realise that as well as clearly not going to a gym I am probably fairly obviously gay, but the assumption was, to me, rather annoying. As was the attitude that all gay men go to the gym, like saying that all lesbians own a cat. It's strange how people love to allocate labels to us all. A few weeks back I talked about tribalism, and now I am questioning whether people really need to define you by your sexuality. I'm sure he would never suggested that I was the only man in Brighton not to go to a gym.

“ I realise that as well as clearly not going to a gym I am probably fairly obviously gay ”

One of the things I love about modern society – and my own life, is that I do not conduct it by adhering to a set of rules laid down by my sexual preferences. I am equally likely to spend an evening in the local pub as in a gay bar. Actually that is not true, I am far more likely to spend my evening in the local pub than in a gay bar. My group of friends is all encompassing, men and women, straight, gay, trans, uncertain, dare I say it – willing to help out of we get busy…. I am of course joking, what I am saying is that it is really wonderful that here in Brighton I do not need to hide away or change the way I behave or the way I dress, pretend to be younger or older even. As for the doc, well let me put it like this: I know I should try to lose some weight, should endeavour to do more exercise and get more sleep even. But these will be my choices and are certainly not based on my sexual preferences, so go spin! To use a cliché, I am what I am! LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

an’t Take My Eyes Off You, RC’s 2017 Fringe concert. Latest 7 has been following the progress of Brighton & Hove's Rainbow Chorus for some years now. It has been a pleasure not only to go along to their performances throughout the year but also to watch with both interest and admiration how they have grown and developed. Expectations of community choirs who live by the tenet of come one come all can be pretty low. Hardly surprising if you see that they work on a no audition basis. What the Rainbows have achieved is quite remarkable and time after time we have seen the raising of standards, of ambition and of course musicality. You would be hard pressed to spot the difference between them and audition only choirs these days. This must be down to two things, a passion and commitment from the members of the chorus and power house of a musical director, in the form of the irrepressible Aneesa Chaudhry.

At most performances we meet up with our media friend James Ledward of G Scene who says this: “If you wonder where the LGBT community in Brighton is, just go and see a Rainbow Chorus concert!”. We could not agree more!

“ We are always

eun Kuti led the band and an eager audience through a highly energetic, exuberant and exhilarating set. Son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Seun has developed the style further whilst retaining the heart and sensibilities. A strong social and political message pervaded, with inequality and the responsibility of artists to raise consciousness as well as energy being the main focus. The grooves were driving, the brass punchy, the artists were in their element, and the audience? Well, we all felt the explosive power in that room as the floorboards bounced under our feet, united in music.

BRIGHTON LIGHTS WHAT TO DO IN THE CITY > MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WITH JOE FULLER

1

Saxophonist Trevor Watts doesn't play live often so this intimate ‘bring your own booze’ gig at West Hill Hall is a thrilling improvisatory treat. Wolf Eyes are a great noise band and there's also support from local free jazz band Bolide so £12 is great value for money.

> COMEDY WITH VICTORIA NANGLE

Times they are achanging – providing ample ponderings for the publican, politician and philosopher, Al Murray’s Pub Landlord. With two performances in one day of his new show ‘Let’s Go Backwards Together’, you can expect raucous laughter mixing intelligent satire from simple great observational comedy from the blazerwearing man himself. Theatre Royal Brighton, Sunday 9 April, 3.30pm & 7.30pm, £31.65

West Hill Hall, 8 April, 7.30pm

Guy Lloyd is Vince Venus, who is part of SOCK, and the reformed band play at Latest Music Bar this Saturday. Also performing will be freestyle rapper Gramski who will open the night with a set inspired by audience participation, and ‘chap rapper’ Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer.

The Edinburgh preview season is here! An absolute treat to start your ball rolling of halfformed shows and glimpses of comedic genius is a double header from two highly acclaimed comics – Phil Jerrod and Ivo Graham. Jerrod explores why it’s still worth trying to be happy in the face of terribleness, whilst Graham brings his unapologetic Eton and Oxford alumnus perspective to bear on the general world around him. Caroline Of Brunswick, Thursday 6 April, 7.30pm, £5

Latest Music Bar, 8 April, 8pm, £8£10

Tamsin Greig's turn as Malvolia has been described as “resplendent” by thestage.co.uk, so I'm excited about her take on the role in Shakespeare's comedy of mistaken identity. The acclaimed new version also features Doon Mackichan from Smack The Pony, so any British TV comedy fans will be well catered for. Odeon, 6 April, 7pm, £15£17.50

4

I’m always a sucker for a show ridden with four or five star reviews from a wide range of publications, and Kieran Hurley’s show Heads Up at The Marlborough fits the bill. The show asks what people would do if they found themselves facing the end of the world, including teenage girls, finance workers, celebrities, and the writing and storytelling have been lauded. Heads Up, The Marlborough Theatre, 4 April, £12/£10

If you’re stuck in the mindset that galleries are intimidating and only for the artyinitiated, you clearly haven’t poked your nose into the delightful Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel. Head there between 8 and 29 April and you’re in for a real treat as owner and curator James Stewart is welcoming back Tom Farthing with a new series of paintings. Although this latest collection is entitled Still Life Paintings, you can expect a few observational figurative works that the artist is known for – all captivating contemporary studies with timeless appeal. It’s worth the trip for a chat with James himself, and once you’ve been you’ll want to go back again. zimmerstewart.co.uk artymagazines.com

> Jamie Walker puts women’s football at the forefront with new Albion show

O

ver my last two years as part of the sports team at Latest TV it has been a pleasure to be able to cover the progression of the Brighton & Hove Albion Women's team. For any of you out there who haven't gone to see them I would highly recommend it! It's affordable, with a great atmosphere and the team play to a very high standard.

“ Albion Women’s games are

affordable with a great atmosphere ” With all that being said I had wanted to put women's football at the forefront here in Sussex and now we are able to thanks to our new Albion Women's show. The first series will document the Seagulls’ first venture into the Women's Super League with the Spring Series, before the show returns at the beginning of next season.

It is a chance to bring the team to a wider audience and give them the platform to shine on that they deserve, and I hope it will be the perfect partner to our current coverage of the men’s team. You can catch the show on Latest TV via Freeview Channel 7, Virgin Media 159 or thelatest.co.uk at 7:30pm every Wednesday night, with the show available on YouTube later in the week.

MONDAY 10 Homeland Channel 4, 9pm It’s interesting when a crime drama reflects the anxiety and paranoia of the global temperament. Yes, we had a degree of that with Jack Bauer – who can forget the pressure-filled ‘tick tock’? – but we’re primed now to get on board when Keane and Saul have to join forces to shut down the campaign for disinformation. Fake fake news.

Brighton Lights Latest TV, 8.30pm Joe Fuller shares some of this week’s highlights you might like to join in with if you’re venturing out into town this week. And with the weather turning so nice, why not? From old skool ‘80s Batman at Duke’s at Komedia to Caro Emerald and the Harlem Globetrotters at The Brighton Centre, there’s loads.

How’d You Get So Rich? Channel 4, 10pm Katherine Ryan meets movers and shakers that have moved and shaken their way into the millionaire bracket through their own hard graft. Clever folk. Moolah comes from unusual sources, as shown by the man who made it rich from owning caravan parks, and the motivational speaker done good.
