5 THE CRUCIBLE Arthur Miller’s terrifying, alltoorelevant classic comes to Theatre Royal Brighton

I

n stark contrast to my effusive praise for the intellectually invigorating book Infinite Jest last week, here I'd like to revel in the rush of sheer spectacle and pageantry one can see at the theatre. I saw Yamato Drummers at the Dome recently, who are a group of approximately 10 performers who flamboyantly play a wide range of different drums. As I discuss in my review on page 14: there was real musicianship aligned with playful showmanship, and the sense of enthusiasm in the crowd and on stage resulted in a fun night out. I've been told that I have quite eclectic interest in the arts, when I worked at Resident for example some found it odd that I would veer between manufactured pop, classical and metal. I don't want to limit myself with a few descriptors in this brief column, but my tastes probably, generally, skew towards the strange, the intelligent, the eloquent, the beautiful and the musical in art (which might be why Twin Peaks, The Beatles and The Simpsons register so fondly with me as confluences of all those things). There's certainly something to be said for the bold and bombastic however. The Drummers were fresh and stark in a directly entertaining way which sounds similar to how Nick Aldwinckle enjoyed the “unashamedly ridiculous spectacle” of metal band Ghost (also reviewed on page 14). Whatever your tastes then, it's great that we have such a wealth of shows on our doorstep, be they an avantgarde performance art piece reflecting on the diurnal rhythms of the 19th century factory worker subtitled with the impenetrable argot of an obtuse website coder as imagined by a sadly neglected but luminously artificially intelligent suprasubliminal vacuum cleaner from the future... or simply some loud drums played together impressively.

THE CRUCIBLE > Arthur Miller’s terrifying, alltoorelevant classic comes to Theatre Royal Brighton

A

brand new production of Arthur Miller’s landmark work, The Crucible, will arrive at Theatre Royal Brighton to transport you to seventeenth century Salem, where truth holds no currency, fear is used as a political tool and where intruding threats are invented to explain current woes. In a tight knit community, a group of girls is caught dancing wildly in the woods. Allegations of witchcraft ensue. Lust, superstition and personal grievances collide and the whole village is quickly consumed by an unstoppable flow of fear, paranoia and manipulation suddenly noone is safe from their neighbour and the noose. Who will survive?

“ We live in a world of scapegoating the vulnerable and the innocent ” This terrifying classic couldn’t be more pertinent in today’s political landscape, a parable for our times. The unrelenting and violent witchhunt, originally written as an allegory about the brutal reign of McCarthyism resonates into the present day as a stark and ferocious warning from the past. Director Douglas Rintoul’s explains: “Unnervingly The Crucible is as relevant today as it was when it was first written, if not more so. The text operates in three time frames. It explores the events of the late 17th century whilst excavating the political events in the United States of America in the 1950s but also illuminating our own time. It’s easy to look around today and see the analogies that one can make between LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Salem, America in the 1950s and our contemporary world. We live in a world of posttruth, The Crucible is a world of posttruth. We live in a world of scapegoating the vulnerable and the innocent for control and power.” Charlie Condou, best known for playing Marcus Dent on the UK’s best loved soap, Coronation Street, takes on the role of witchhunter Reverend Hale and adds: “What’s so brilliant about the play is that it can apply to so many different times and that’s why it’s so prescient every time it’s staged. Of course, it’s about the story, but you can always find parallels going on in the zeitgeist and it invites those kinds of conversations in the audience.” Charlie’s costar, Call the Midwife’s Sister Winifred, Victoria Yeates, who plays Elizabeth Proctor says: “It’s an intense show but it’s fast paced and the audience is completely gripped. You can see their astonishment as they are thinking ‘What? No! Oh my God, I can’t believe that has happened.’ By Act 4 they’re on the edge of their seats. We’ve received so much feedback that people feel the play is completely relatable to them and feels as though it was written for these times.” This bold new production of one of the 20th century's finest plays is coproduced with award winning producing house Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch and Selladoor Productions. Don’t miss the spine tingling and chilling reminder of the frailty of reason in the face of hysteria. grew up with a drinker in our household. He wasn’t abusive, in fact X was lots of fun. As kids my brother and I would play our own version of Buckaroo when it came to waking up X from his afternoon nap after a boozy lunch. There would be ‘dry’ days to balance out the excess, and bottles of Aqua Libre would be brought out as replacement offerings when the family went ‘round to others for lunch. X was – and still is – one of the sweetest and most lovely people I have ever known. I only realised X was a drinker when I got well into my teens – perhaps that was when I began to notice other people in the world besides me – and then knowing it made me examine my own blossoming relationship with alcohol, rather than throw myself into boozing full throttle with a lot of my peers. I went along to AlAnon meetings, got my own perspective, and continued with the rest of my life. This was the first time I ever heard the sentence: “The first step in solving a problem is recognizing there is one”. I’ve since updated the phrase for myself to: “just because you can see the monster in the room, have pointed it out to people and called it a name, it doesn’t mean you don’t still have to deal with the monster”.

“ I’m not saying that the first step isn’t tricky – but it’s not the whole journey! ” Fast forward to, well, the rest of my life, and I find I’m throwing this out to all and sundry. It’s become a bug bear of mine. I’m not saying that the first step isn’t tricky – but it’s not the whole journey! Whether you’re writing a book (isn’t everyone in Brighton?) or learning an instrument, saying you’re going to do it is the first step – not the last. Loads of people shout about taking that first step – it’s less exciting to walk further down the road and keep going. You don’t get heaped with congratulations for doing more of the same and keeping up the good work. There’s really not much kudos incentive. That’s probably why Alcoholics Anonymous have things like sobriety coins and medals to mark landmark dates. A pat on the back when everyone else has simply adjusted and forgotten you were any other way. But it is worth remembering that you could also get that book you’ve always wanted to write, a kick ass riff all of your own on the bassoon, or a new appreciation of coffee you picked up when you actually went to Latin America rather than just talking about it. Pull your finger out. 6 | LATEST 7

o you believe that people who have committed minor crimes should only do community service? Minor crimes such as graffiti, stealing from shops, getting into a fight are all punishable by doing time within the local community. Many people think these people should face punishments that are more serious such as imprisonment. However, I believe community service fits the level of these crimes. I think that people should do community service for minor crimes because it is cruel to send these people to prison. If a person goes to prison for a minor crime, it could seriously knock their confidence in life when they may have not meant to do such a petty crime in the first place. Another reason is that prisons are overcrowded and that it could put pressure on the staff working there. It could make breaking out of prison easier because if there are more people in prison there will be less prison officers to keep people under control. Another thing is that many people who commit minor crimes suffer from mental health issues and might not have meant to do this, and so they should not go to prison but be treated properly within the community. In our class poll, 50% believe people should go to prison for minor crimes. One girl said: “They may do it again and if they go to prison it would teach them a lesson”. Another said: “They should lock people away for the safety of other people around them and that it would be better for society”. A third said: “They could influence and teach other people to commit offences, but if they go to prison, there is a smaller chance of someone doing the same thing”. A general feeling was that any crime is not right and all criminals should be punished. The people who are the victims are the ones who suffer. In light of all these opinions, I still believe that people who have committed minor crimes should do community service and not go to prison because prison does not stop them and will not build better communities. I believe this is the better way to deal with less serious crimes and is an overall better solution for our society.

“ It could make breaking out of prison easier ”

RICHARD HERRING > Acclaimed comedian, podcaster, writer, question asker and more Richard Herring is coming to town with the best bits from his last 12 oneman shows. Victoria Nangle asks about parenthood and pasta Hiya Richard – how are you doing today? I am mildly tipsy. This is my first day off in two and a half weeks and I had a couple of gin and tonics on the way back from Glasgow. You revel in mischief quite a lot. Did you find that in going through your 12 oneman shows for the best bits that your opinion over the years has contradicted itself – and did that tempt you further to include it? Of course, but I said loads of things I didn’t mean in the shows. So I was very rude about kids and parents and now I have a kid. But I always wanted to be a dad and never really meant the stuff I said. Except the bit about children being sexcrement. That’s definitely true. Is there any material, when you were revisiting your older shows, that you’d forgotten you’d written, or did it all come back to you fresh as a daisy with no surprises? Yeah, loads. That’s partly why I wanted to revisit the shows. But my memory (at least for old routines) is pretty sharp and the ant trails in my brain are strong, so most of it came back pretty easily. You create so much material every day, with your blog, podcasts, articles – is the plan to make sure your daughter never discovers your wickedest life stories due to the sheer amount of material she’ll have to go through? I am happy for her to find out all about me (when the time is right). I would be surprised if she’s ever interested enough in me to wade through all this crap though.

You did say, during (your wife) Catie’s pregnancy, that you would continue without self censor once your daughter was born. Have you found you’ve gotten any more squeamish over certain topics since her arrival? I used to do loads of jokes about paedophilia and all my parent friends said that I wouldn’t find that stuff funny any more once I had kids. I thought they were crazy. But they were right. Because now I’ve got a kid I have realised that paedophilia is really bad… so sorry for not realising before. I guess some things you need to have kids for to really understand, right?

“ I just wrote the

question ‘Who is your favourite member of Blazin’ Squad?’ ”

How are you doing with your book of emergency questions (as mentioned in Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Podcast) – any you’d care to share that have tickled you particularly? It’s all done, in fact I’ve just done the blurb for the back cover and then it’s off to the printers. I just wrote the question “Who is your favourite member of Blazin’ Squad?” Quite pleased with that. Mine is Plat’num obvs. Who are you chasing – or would like to chase – as your dream guests on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Podcast (RHLSTP), and what questions would you like to ask them?

I’d love to talk to any of the Pythons, but particularly Michael Palin who I ADORE! And also hopeful that I might be able to tempt Jerry Sadowitz on board. Maybe Palin and Sadowitz together. Now that would be a show. What’s your favourite pasta – and why? Brown penne. It’s classic, but perfect. And the sauce goes inside it and makes it better. What are your ambitions for the next 12 months – personally and globally? I don’t have many ambitions left. Just to carry on doing what I am doing, getting slightly more popular, but not

so much more popular that it impacts on my day to day life. I have just recorded a sitcom for Radio 4 called Relativity and am waiting to hear from Channel 4 about another sitcom called “Everything Happens (for no reason)”. It’d be great if I got to do more writing. I am releasing the new video episodes of AIOTM in the next few months, finishing off The Best tour and writing a new show for Edinburgh called “Oh Frig, I’m 50!” And I am doing at least another 40 RHLSTPS. So I guess my ambition is not to land too many more jobs. Richard Herring: The Best, Theatre Royal Brighton, Sunday 23 April 2017, 8pm, £19.15

ith the arrival of the sun came an invitation to join Ms C with her mum Mrs O for a spot of lunch. They have been telling me about Perch on Lancing beach for some time now so it was a great opportunity to discover if their praise is justified. I am pleased to report that it certainly is. Perch is the kind of seafront cafe that you dream of finding, one where you can actually see the sea and relax with some decent food, and the food is more than decent and very well priced.

“ I chose

mussels, plump and generous ”

One of the keys to a successful outing with Mrs O is access, not as spritely as she once was, we needed easy wheelchair access, which it has. Secondly it helps if it is dog friendly, she loves dogs and they put a big smile on her face. Perch is dog lover's heaven. We were seated in minutes, even though it was very busy, very for a Wednesday lunchtime. A lot of eateries would be happy to be that full on a Saturday night, so it is clear that this place is a real hit with the locals. The format is great, a restaurant area, cafe area and a bar too. It means that if you want to dine you can, if you just want coffee and a cake then you have that option too. We wanted to dine and both ladies wanted the fish and chips with mushy peas. I was pleased to see that they were mushy peas too and not the lazy route of squidging frozen peas, not good enough in my book. These peas looked good as did the fish in crisp batter. The chips are great but oddly shaped, almost scoop like. I like them as there was a nice big crispy surface area, and they were well seasoned and dry too. I chose the mussels, a kilo of them cooked with leeks and bacon in cider with a dash of cream. Absolutely lovely, nice and plump and generous. They came with chips and bread, again good chips but sadly dull bread, I suspect that bakeoff stuff that can have a rather claggy crumb. Claggy crumb does not suck up mussel broth, not that it stopped me trying. Tea came in an enamel pot and my ginger beer was a quality brand and icy cold, perfect as the sun was streaming in from the seafacing windows. I have to agree with my friends, Perch is rather good and I will certainly return.

> A hirsute resolution

Y

ou’d be surprised how much of an effect having long hair can have on your life. I remember on a train journey I took when I was much younger, coming back with my family from a day trip to London, I was transfixed by the long hair of a man in the same carriage. I don’t know what it was about the hairstyle at that point that left me so enraptured but I remember vowing to myself there and then that I would never cut my hair again until it was long and luscious and swishable. Fast forward a few vowbreaking years to January 2014 and we see the declaration of the same vow. However this time it was made especially sacred by the allowance of magical commitment fairy dust you get with every new year’s resolution. Hold down that fast forward button one more time and here we are three years later with three years worth of hair hanging from my noggin. No big deal right? Wrong. It turns out growing your hair is more of a trial that I ever could have imagined. Firstly there’s the self inflicted hell of the awkward inbetween phase where it’s all you can do just to stop yourself from looking like you jam your fingers in plug sockets for fun. Fortunately rather early on I discovered the blessing that is hats,

“ I remember vowing to myself that I would never cut my hair again ” so my eternal bad hair day was locked away under cap and key. Then there was my personal discovery that unbeknownst to me my hair had been curly all my life, it had just never been given the chance to strut its ringlets. Although an intriguing realisation, now I was faced with the prospect of waiting twice as long for my Baywatch hair swish moment! And eventually, after blagging that a hat really can go with every single one of my outfits, and failing to find anything that converted frizz into ringlets, I was faced with the final hurdle: conviction. After two long years of getting up in the morning and being greeted in the mirror by an asylum escapee you begin to question why you’re doing this to yourself. Truth be told, I came incredibly close to lopping the whole thing off. I was just so tempted by the idea of a life without shampoo and conditioner and a never ending rotation of mousses and serums that could allegedly control the demon that lived on my scalp. But like a marathoner who hits the wall and breaks through I resisted the final temptation, and that first Baywatch hair swish was worth every moment of bad hair day torture. 10 | LATEST 7

cannot recall the amount of times over the last 25 years I have received messages, letters and emails from readers asking me to recommend a gay restaurant. In case you have been hibernating I am the same AK as the one who reviews eating and drinking places, yes that’s right, the fat one. I always sigh in despair when that question is asked. In my view it is and always has been the most redundant of requests. Oh of course I understand that there are people who want to hide away in gay ghettos and not have to engage with the rest of the world. Good luck to them, but don't come to me for a recommendation of where is ‘best’ because in their nature they will be limited, I do not rate eateries by sexual preference, I’m sorry, I do it by the quality of dining experience, from the food and service to the atmosphere. I get the same question asked about law firms "Can you recommend a good gay solicitor?". Well again I am sorry, I cannot. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great gay lawyers, barristers and solicitors I am sure. But would you not benefit from a recommendation for the best lawyer? I know that is what I would want, just like I want the best food.

“ I hope that this is not sounding like I have a downer on gay professionals – far from it, I applaud them ”

Now I hope that this is not sounding like I have a downer on gay professionals, far from it. I applaud them and encourage their success, and I hope that success brings them huge amounts of work, from across the wide range of beings that populate this planet. Over the last year or so I have become more and more conscious of a personal belief. I don't want to live a separate life, bobbing along cushioned by a fake belief that in separatism I have found equality. In separatism I would lose all semblance of equality. For me equality will have arrived when noone asks me those silly questions again. When noone judges me on my sexual preferences. Putting things in the simplest way, I want what is best, I want to exist without prejudice, without prying eyes and minds, without interference or restriction. I believe that we will only have achieved equality when we no longer need to use the word equality. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

n an age when entertainment is never further than a keystroke away, teaching the next generations about live performance has never been more important. How many times have you sat in a theatre and been frustrated by the presence of children who simply do not realise that live theatre does not have a pause facility or a rewind button? I know that we have. Now the Theatre Royal Brighton has announced its new Creative Learning programme for Spring/Summer 2017.

The Creative Learning programme is designed to open the doors of Theatre Royal Brighton to as many people in and around the city as possible. Running alongside

This term’s theme is favourite books and stories and each session includes drama, arts and crafts, games and a look on stage. We believe our theatre should be open to everyone in our community and our Creative Learning programme gives people an opportunity to get to know more about the theatre and have fun in our beautiful building.” Skip’s After School Club dates: Wednesdays 5 & 19 April, 3 & 17 May, 7 & 21 June. PWR BTTM played a great show at West Hill Hall last .December, with The Guardian praising their debut tour for being a shambolic amalgam of beards, biceps and big hair. If it's anything like their previous gig, the queer punk band's gig at The Haunt should be a lively mix of glitter & politics.

Barely Methodical Troupe have been lauded for their “mortifyingly funny” new wave British circus. Their new show KIN explores group dynamics and how it feels to jostle for attention, told through some bold catching, flying and tumbling.

The Harlem Globetrotters have been going for 90 .years, and if you don't know them, they're an exhibition basketball team that deals in trick shots and entertainment in a theatrical, comedic way. Kind of like wrestling for basketball, and I'm intrigued enough that I'm gonna go myself.

REVIEWS > Ridiculous spectacle, musical theatre, playful showmanship & intimate storytelling

“ An enjoyable riot of lurid synchrony ” Yamato Drummers amato Drummers are endearing, energetic and effervescent. A group of approximately 10 performers play various drums, ranging from massive to tiny, with real musicianship aligned with playful showmanship. The noise is fantastic, and the mood enthusiastic, although the first half could have benefited from some more variety in sound, colour or staging perhaps. One attempt at a change featuring a three stringed instrument called a shamisen fell flat however. A small cymbal section in the second half was a theatrical, innovative highlight, and an extended bout of audience participation went down very well, eliciting a generous ovation. The evening overall was an enjoyable riot of lurid synchrony.

Y

Ghost and Zombi stride the stage on which Abba won Eurovision, their fellow Swedes, popmetallers Ghost, served up an equally camp slice of theatrical rock. With synth/drums prog duo Zombi supporting, evoking the creepiness of ’70s Italian slasher films, the headliners upped the ante with their quasireligious blend of Alice Cooper posturing, Rocky Horror musical tomfoolery and devastatingly hooky heavy riffs. His nuns handing out booze to fans, Papa Emeritus, figurehead of this “Popestar” tour, was a dazzling frontman, musing on topics as charming as cannibalism to female orgasms. The odd keytar, masked ghoul musician and pyrotechnic flourish thrown in made for an unashamedly ridiculous spectacle.

A Chorus Line t’s over 40 years since A Chorus Line premiered, but it is as good and as powerful a piece of theatre to this day – especially when done well. This new production by local company Apollo does it better than well, they do it brilliantly. It depends on many things, fine ensemble work, great solo performances, thrilling dancing and terrific vocal skills. Apollo deliver them all. With, for the most part, a solo piano accompaniment, the songs have a clarity that allows the clever lyrics to shine. The well drilled company can certainly dance and vocally they shine, beautiful harmonies and precision diction, essential when a piece of musical theatre is driven by lyric and not just by dialogue.

Heads Up eads Up started as an Edinburgh Fringe show, and playing in the Marlborough’s theatre space retains that intimate feel – one man, a candle, and limited lighting and sound effects, telling a story. He says it’s about the end of the world, but storyteller Kieran Hurley uses the apocalypse to ask us to look at ourselves through the characters of the story. All four of the voices (spoken in second person) are perfectly portrayed, from eyerolling groans of a teenage girl to the chaotic exclamations of a coked up popstar. An utterly enrapturing show that will hold you to the end.

> Tales From The Margins: Presented by Rainer Schulze

T

ales From The Margins is a different kind of LGBTIQ film programme: it is not only showing films on LGBTIQ issues from around the world, but I am also talking with the filmmakers about their films: why they made them, the problems they faced and the impact their films had.

“ A man outed by a Ugandan tabloid as one of the “top homosexuals” ” The programme has a global outlook and focuses on struggles and issues which LGBTIQ communities in the western world often believe, rightly or wrongly, they have long overcome. It includes both documentaries and narrative films, short films as well as feature films, and over time it aims to cover all the six letters of L, G, B, T, I and Q The first introductory series comprises films on LGBTIQ communities in a number of African countries. It opened with the

disturbing Ugandan feature film ‘Outed: The Painful Reality’ which, based on a true story, looks into the life of Vida, a man outed by a Ugandan tabloid as one of the “top homosexuals” in the country and as a result loses his job and his house and is hunted by the authorities. The next series of Tales From The Margins will shift the focus to South Asia where LGBTIQ people are also still struggling for legal equality and social acceptance. Tales From The Margins wants to stimulate discussion, create solidarity in our global community and, hopefully, be entertaining as well. By Rainer Schulze, Tune in to Tales From The Margins, Mondays and Fridays at 9.00pm on LGBT+ TV, Virgin Media 159, Freeview 7 or thelatest.co.uk
