I

t might feel selfcongratulatory, but it's worth reminding ourselves that we’re lucky to have such a wealth of cool stuff to go to in the Fringe and Festival on our doorstep. I'm going to highlight a mini series in the Fringe that you might have missed: the Listen America! series from 'music of our time', a music arts education charity. It might sound odd but modern classical music is arguably far more experimental and innovative than modern rock music, which can often fall back on the same old templates. If you're interested in more provocative or bold music you can stream George Crumb's 'Black Angels' quartet at bit.ly/1jvwajV to hear the occasionally overwhelming piece. David Bowie commented that it “scared the bejabbers out of me” which is a ringing endorsement in my book.

It might be more tempting however to sample the more accessible music of Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell who are being showcased in a solo concert by American pianist Joel Sachs. The sparse Night Thoughts (Homage to Ives) by Copland will feature, which is redolent of jazz and starkly thrilling in a more quiet way than the Crumb piece (bit.ly/2nHnwSb).

American Piano Music: Joel Sachs, St Nicholas' Church, 2 June, 7.30pm

It might feel repetitious to regular readers but I will keep banging the drum for classical music in today's musical landscape since I consider it a little detached and aloof. If you're into strange music in the jazz or indie realms for example, I think there is a lot of crossover appeal in these shows. I don't have space here to discuss the other two gigs but flick to page 91 of the Fringe brochure or visit musicofourtime.co.uk to read more about the series.

an I come down to stay?”, my friend A asked. Not an unusual request from London pals, until he added that it was so that he could be up in time to pick up his registration pack to run the Brighton Marathon. I’ve never had a marathonrunner stay over before. And could he bring his friend too. Yes, if he’s a very good friend because I’ve only got the one spare futon. And so it was arranged. I, myself, was up in London the night A and M stayed over. I got back at around midnight that night, having said a quick hello in the afternoon when I’d handed over spare keys and the duo had headed off in one direction and I’d hastily put on some slap before hotfooting it to the station and fairytale hopes of trains that might be generous with my travel plans. Sunday morning I woke up to vague movement noises around the flat, steadfastly ignoring them and any hosting duties. However, after both had left the bright sunshine pierced the mothholes in my curtains, inching into my head the idea of joining M on the marathon’s sidelines in support of the runners. I’d never been in town on marathon day before. It might be fun. And I could get a tan.

“ The bright sunshine pierced the mothholes in my curtains ” I have never been so overwhelmed with good nature and enthusiasm. M had a spot with the charity that was sponsoring A – CALM, Campaign Against Living Miserably –right on Marine Parade. Inbetween the drummers of GOSH and the sweetness of a dementia charity. M was an old hand at supporting. M had run marathons and races all over the world. M was the best asset I could’ve found to be next to for my first marathon. I absolutely loved it. Our small group of supporters supported everyone. We shouted cheers of general enthusiasm, whoops of triumph for those running victorious and others plainly struggling. M had brought 6kg of jelly babies, which we poured into small plastic bowls and held out as far as our arms could reach over the barriers, digging into our sides, for runners to get a sugar hit without sticky fingers or a large choking hazard. We high fived. We stayed just the right side of cat calling – enthusiasm for activity, not form. It was amazing. A finished his first marathon with a good time, and a deep tan mark from his headband that promised plenty of humblebrags in the following weeks as people asked its origin. And I have an even deeper respect for all of those runners, every last one. Well done! 6 | LATEST 7

I

don’t agree with my school’s bullying policy. In my experience, it hasn’t made a difference to help children who are getting bullied that I know of. Eight out of ten people I asked in a class poll agreed that not enough is being done with the problem of bullying in school. One person in my group had to leave her school after experiencing bullying for three years and no one did anything about it. My own school has seven different points to their antibullying policy. These points cover: taking bullying seriously; reporting it to a member of staff; all teachers encouraging children to report any bullying that they have witnessed; every student should stay safe from physical and emotional harm. I experienced bullying recently and I told many members of staff at the school. Unfortunately, they have not been doing anything except having an interview with the bully. It didn’t really change anything. Eventually, the bully and I sorted it out between us. The school did not really help in this matter.

“ Many children come home feeling depressed from being bullied ” So what could the school do more of? I think the school should have given out a harder punishment because a lot of people have reported this particular bully in many cases. The punishments that should be handed out are longer detentions and isolation from other students. Depending on what bullies have done, the punishments should fit the level of harassment. The school needs to take every situation seriously and even excluding the bully from the school if necessary. People who have disagreed with my statement have said that not every bully is going to listen to what the teachers are saying and they just won’t stop. Other people have said that they are doing a lot more now than they used to. I recognise that my own school does have seven points to their antibullying policy: however, I still don’t think they are doing enough outside of this written policy. I think that if the teachers stick to harder punishments then the bullies may stop and think about their actions and they will stop. Therefore, I think schools should do more about bullying so children are cared for fairly. Many children come home feeling depressed from being bullied, surely this is something we need to wake up to. Nine students from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy have been writing their own articles about something that matters to them, as part of Little Green Pig's weekly afterschool Tuesday club. There’s a rapper called Ocean Wisdom and a rapper called Jam Baxter and a group called Four Owls who are going to do an event as a part of a High Focus showcase. I’m really excited about Yussef Kamaal, Yussef Dayes is a drummer that I’ve known since I was very young and I’m really excited to see him – he’s got this duo, they are doing a Lunchtime concert. Gary Younge’s doing a talk, that’s going to be really good. There’s Depart, a circus in a cemetery that’s going to be very good. So many things!

KATE TEMPEST > The Brighton Festival Guest Director on the events she’s most excited about, her relationship with the city & how energy can spill out on to the street What have been your aims as Guest Director of Brighton Festival 2017? The reason that I thought that this would be an amazing thing to do is because of having an opportunity to think about the artists that I love, the work that I love, the stuff that I love to go to, and to try to broaden the scope a little bit of how other people receive and have access to these artworks. I was extremely humbled to be asked to follow in the footsteps of such great artists that have come before: Laurie Anderson last year, Aung San Suu Kyi, Brian Eno. What are some of the things that most excite you in this year’s programme? There’s a sitespecific piece of theatre, by this incredible duo from Australia, it’s called Five

Short Blasts: Shoreham. Five short blasts is the signal that you give when you are in a sea way, that means ‘I’m confused about your intention and I’m nervous that we are going to collide’. So, this is the premise of this sound art piece that involves the industrial boat seaway. Also, there’s a real emphasis on lyricism which is something that is really close to my heart. We’ve got a load of poets that we’ve programmed and storytellers and lyricists from across the board. There’s a guy called Daniel Morden, who’s from Wales and he’s a storyteller – he knows the whole Odyssey back to front in his head, and he can tell it to you while you’re sitting there and it will feel like a blockbuster movie.

What new elements have you brought to Brighton Festival this year? We’ve got this really cool initiative called Your Place – which is probably the thing I’m most excited about. We have developed these two community hubs, one in Whitehawk, one in Hangleton, in community centres there and we’ll be programming events that are free – completely free – going on for two weekends across the Festival. That will be performances from Brighton Festival artists, also participatory events and workshops. Everything completely free, programmed in conjunction and consultation with people that run some of the community programmes out of those community centres. I thought it was important that as well as having this very exciting, cosmopolitan festival happening in the city centre,

In terms of that, there is this Pay It Forward element where if you feel inclined and can afford it you can put a fiver down and Brighton Festival will match that fiver and then you can create a £10 ticket for someone who can’t afford a £10 ticket. After something amazing like the opening Children’s Parade where all the school kids in Brighton parade through the streets – PayitForward feels like a useful way of activating some of the feelings that get brought up when you are watching a piece of work together – about community and feeling a part of something. It feels like an active way that people can help make the Festival a bit more open and create space for more people to come and check out some of these amazing artists. What’s been your relationship to the city and the Festival to date? I’ve had a relationship with this place all my life. There was always someone from my family that lived here or close to here. As I’ve grown older, getting to play in Brighton Festival was an amazing feeling because Brighton has this reputation as a very open and free thinking town. As a queer woman coming here, the relief that I feel when I step off the train is palpable. Honestly I can’t explain the feeling that it gives me, it makes me feel really welcome and safe. So, the idea of a liberal town is one thing but

“ I have the opportunity to broaden

the scope a bit of how people receive and have access to these artworks ”

with all this buzz and hype and all this energy that gets built up from people seeing something spilling out on to the street, I wanted it to also reflect the wider population of Brighton who maybe can’t afford to get in to the city centre. I wanted to bring a bit of what was happening in the Brighton Festival out to a bit more of Brighton.

actually for me personally to get off the train and walk about and to be like: ‘Wow this is ok, I’m ok here, I’m welcome here you know?’ That is a really important thing.” Brighton Festival takes place from 628 May 2017. Visit brightonfestival.org for information.

n a recent poll this small but, dare I say it, perfectly formed restaurant shot up to second place. Hardly surprising either in my view. I've been a few times now and I’m ashamed that I have never written about it . Maybe subconsciously I wanted to keep it secret, after all it is small and already booking is essential if you want a table, even early in the week.

“ We left with very big smiles on our faces and full bellies ” So why so good? The answer lies in clarity of intent. This is a charcoal grill, Japanese style, and that is what they stick to. It is also great value, well priced dishes that give you the chance to dine on a budget or, should you wish, splurge. Well I was with my good friends Ms L and Mr B, food lovers to the core and my accomplices when making the series Cook It!. Neither had been so I was left to suggest what we ate. That was not a problem and I ploughed in with a portion of pickles and some kimchi. I love them and so did they, the pickles are amazing, crunchy and sour, the kimchi funky and pokey. Next the belly pork, it has to be tasted to be believed and every place that has it on their menu should try this to see just how meltingly tender this meat can be. We started with one portion but in the end we had eaten three. Then aubergine, I know some people dislike it but I simply love the creamy texture of a well handled egg plant and at Bincho they handle it with skill, choosing the long thin variety and basting it in miso before grilling, utter perfection. So too was a tempura of fresh fish that we chose from the selection of daily specials, a generous portion too. I love the skewers of chicken hearts but Ms L was not keen so I persuaded her that the skewers of chicken skin were a must, and she agreed, as good if not better than those bits that a cook will steal from a roast chicken before serving it. I did however get my way with the chicken livers which were simply amazing, how they grill them to that perfect pinkness is beyond me, but they do. I also insisted on the Korean chicken wings which are particularly good and very generous, too big when dining alone sadly. A plate of griddled lettuce was great too, refreshing and tasty Kimchi rice was a new dish for me but one I would return to when dining with friends, alone I would always go back to the grilled rice cakes, they are a nutty delight that you could struggle to manage to make at home. In fact this is the kind of food one might struggle to replicate at home – and why bother when they do it so well. We drank sake, and beer, and white wine and we left with very big smiles on our faces and full bellies. Bincho Yakitori, 63 Preston Street, Brighton BN1 2HE 01273 779021, binchoyakitori.com

LOUIS MICHAEL Loudmouth

> Altering reality sans drugs

I

t’s a little known secret that humans have the power to alter reality. Films and books would have you believe that such a power is beyond mere mortals. Granted, what we see on the big screen is more flashy and colourful. But the power inside each and every human is more real and more fantastic than any CGI could ever hope to be. The power is rooted in humanity’s gift of contemplation, cognition, self awareness and spiritual awareness. Thanks to these functions we are able to form opinions and beliefs, unlike plants and many animals. This means that through the power of our mind we can alter reality by altering our perspectives. When you are ungrateful having a glass of water is nothing special. You have a tap and can have water whenever you want. You might wish you had juice or a fizzy drink, and in fact you resent not having the choice between water and anything else. But as soon as you become grateful you realise that people across the globe would do anything for a glass of water. You see that you are so lucky to have unlimited, clean water at the turn of a tap. The fact that you actually have a choice at all, and could have something other than water is even more of a blessing. A glass of water goes from something unremarkable to something treasured.

“ The ungrateful mind focuses on what is not there ” But we are fooled by the fact that the glass of water doesn't change shape. It looks the same, so how have I altered reality? You may not have altered external reality, but you have entirely changed your internal reality. And suddenly the water seems more clear, and when you take a gulp it seems to be more refreshing than it usually is. The ungrateful mind focuses on what is not there. A mind that does this will forever feel that what they already have is not enough, because all they can see is the vacant space where they are constantly wishing for the things that they desire. But a grateful mind has no time for this. Someone who exercises gratitude realises that the very fact you were born healthy is a gift, and everything thereafter is an additional blessing. The human mind has the ability to alter and shape reality. By embracing the simple concept of gratitude we can all create a world in which we are the richest, luckiest people alive. Remember, happiness is not about what you have, it's about how you think about what you think you have. 10 | LATEST 7

F

or many years the pink triangle was the symbol used to signify that something or someone was homosexual. You saw it on T shirts, on the doors of bars and shops, it was a kind of code and one, that in many ways, has been replaced by the ubiquitous rainbow flag, the cover all for all thing LGBTQ+. But perhaps there are people out there who are too young to remember this and way too young to remember where that pink triangle was first used. The horror is that it was the symbol chosen by the Nazi party to signify that undesirable homosexuals should be labelled with in the concentration camps – yes it's that poignant. Poignant because right now the story is that in Chechnya there are internment camps that are imprisoning LGBTQ+ men. Of course there is denial that this is happening, but Russian LGBTQ+ groups are working very hard to raise awareness and have people freed. At the same time the Russian stance is that there are no gays in this, the most Muslim of regions. "How can we imprison people who simply do not exist?" they say. The Kremlin is also denying that there is some kind of "purge".

“ In Russia now, being even

clandestinely gay could see you behind bars ”

So whilst here we have the freedom to stand and drink at bars, openly gay, in Russia now, being even clandestinely gay could see you behind bars, and not the ones that we can openly enjoy. This is 2017 and the world is in flux. America is still reeling at the fact that Trump managed to get elected, France is seeing a swing to the right and North Korea is shaking its fist with a serious display of military might. Here we have, by the narrowest of margins and following campaigns that on one side were parsimonious with the truth and the other were complacent to say the least, opted to shuffle awkwardly out of the European Union. What a bloody mess! Compared though to the hideous realities of LGBTQ+ freedom in so many countries this is something that we cannot afford to be complacent about. Whilst we can shout out about pride here we need to be declaring SHAME at those countries where the simple right to express ones love is still seen as a crime. REVIEW > Gabriel

G

uernsey, 1943. A household of women – mother, daughter, daughterin law and housekeeper – each find ways to survive the war. Until the arrival of a mysterious man, with no memory of who he is. They name him Gabriel – but is he angel, demon, or just a man? The atmosphere of the war and the further unsettledness caused by the arrival of Gabriel are skilfully captured in both script and acting. The small cast and onesetting play has a huge impact, and the performance was powerful and moving. An examination on what it means to be human, to be desperate, and to survive.
