4 SUMMER OF THE CIRCUS One of the largest contemporary circus festivals cartwheels into Worthing
T
he Magnetic Fields are coming to town! The Magnetic Fields! You don't know them?! I'm fascinated by our relationship with music. I think/hope that a music lover will always be a music lover, although Joe of 10 years ago might be surprised at how few rock gigs 2017 Joe goes to (still a fair few but nothing compared to that indie geek). I’m now just as excited about whether Hofesh Shechter or Benjamin Appl will be returning to Brighton as I am about bands like Deafheaven or Ratatat. There seems to be a general consensus that we form special associations in our teens and it’s a shame that, to some extent, art can arguably not grab us in quite the same way as we get older. To answer those who might say “hang on Joe you bang on about art all the time, you never shut up, is all that enthusiasm a lie?”, I answer no, I'm not lying. I simply mean that the awe and wonder I had when first hearing acts like Eluvium, Cocteau Twins, Sufjan Stevens, Talk Talk, The Beatles, Arvo Pärt, The Velvet Underground etc. for the first time might be difficult to recapture. Anyway, apologies for the quasiphilosophical interlude, the important thing is that The Magnetic Fields are coming to Brighton Dome, which is big news for indie music lovers. They’ll be performing new album 50 Song Memoir, which is filled with strong, intricately written, funny songs. Try out 1999’s 69 Love Songs if you want a superior album, but the new stuff’s good too and they're brilliant live with high quality musicianship meshing with the humour and quiet charisma of Stephin Merritt. I think there will be a lot of indie fans like me excitedly buying tickets for the chance to see The Magnetic Fields on our doorstep. There's certainly new stuff out there to enjoy of course, but sometimes nothing beats a bit of teenage nostalgia.

SUMMER OF CIRCUS One of the largest contemporary circus festivals cartwheels into Worthing: with acts ranging from trampoline to cabaret, acrobats to comedy, live music to trapeze
N
ow recognised as one of the three largest contemporary circus festival in the UK, Worthing Theatres’ program promises thrills for the whole family through myriad live performances and workshops from June 16 to August 27. Launching the season will be one of the newest and most dynamic circus ensembles in the UK, Barely Methodical Troupe, with their latest production Kin (1617 June). After opening the previous Summer of Circus season, Acrojou will be returning to Worthing staging two free performances of The Wheel House at Steyne Gardens (17 June) and Broadwater Green (22 July). They will also be teaching the art of the German Wheel in their workshop at the Assembly Hall (August 6). Trampoline artist Max Calaf Sevé brings his charming tale Anyday to the Pavilion Theatre (1 July), opening a window to the intimate world he shares with his bird on his trampoline, pulling off acrobatic skills to an original score. There will also be trampoline workshops for children (30 June) and adults (1 July). Dizzy O’ Dare displays her skills on the highwire in the world premiere of her show Rise (18 July), fixing helium balloons to her hair as she wanders into the twilight world of showbusiness mixing song, circus and cabaret with a delightful blend of comedy and live music. There will also be a workshop on the day of the performance for people to test and improve their skills on the tightrope. Head First Acrobats bring their internationally acclaimed circus show Elixir (21 July) to the Pavilion Theatre, three handsome scientists attempt to create the elixir of life through acrobatics involving a teeterboard, roue cyr wheel, handbalancing and trapeze. They are also inviting people to develop their own acro balancing skills in a workshop (July 20). After wowing Worthing audiences in last year’s festival, Ockham’s Razor return with their new show Tipping Point (2829 July), winner of the Total Theatre Award and Jacksons Lane Circus Award at the Edinburgh Festival 2016.

Awardwinning Metta Theatre close the season with their critically acclaimed family production of Jungle Book (2627 August): an urban retelling of Rudyard Kipling’s original story featuring jawdropping tricks from a cast of international performers. Nathalie Alison will also be teaching the basics of aerial hoop in their special workshops for everyone aged 8+ (25 26 August).

Contemporary circus: Embracing tradition, evolving expectation Some thoughts from Stephen Sheldrake, Marketing Officer at Worthing Theatres
C
ircus isn’t just about elephants and clowns anymore. When we hosted our first Summer of Circus festival in Worthing last year, I admit I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had the same misconception that many others do when they think of circus, thinking it was only about the more traditional elements such as the animals and top hats, and I was pleased to experience so much more than I had anticipated. Contemporary circus is a beautiful genre, physical theatre meets dance in a most challenging, daring and spectacular form. Every show gives you something different. Just some of the elements you can expect to see throughout include fastpaced juggling, incredible acrobatics, slick silks, high wires, Chinese poles, breath taking balance acts and so much more. Last year we had a production where everything on stage was flown, and I mean everything, from the entire band to the drum kit soaring above the audience’s heads, who were left sitting in awe with their jaws dropped. It was a real sight to see!

tudying the past gives you an appreciation for how quickly things can change. The Victorian era seems so distant and yet it was only 200 years ago. Many Victorians believed that their industrial revolution meant they had developed to a point where they could progress no further. Either in arrogance or ignorance they thought they had reached the pinnacle of advancement, but already our technological era has overshadowed it. It seems to be a common trend that we become so enamoured with the ingenuity of our present time that we have a hard time believing that anything could possibly improve upon it. And yet with the innovative enterprise of the current technological frontier we’re on track to be seen as even more archaic than the Victorians are to us. If we think on this we begin to understand that humanity is part of an eternal process of trial and error, constantly refining itself as it filters out what didn't work and retains and improves upon what did. If you fully embrace this perspective all around you you suddenly begin to see where these improvements could be made, where you could spark that refinement and be the catalyst for that positive change. And in a second we go from being a polished advanced civilisation to a rough work in progress.
“ We don’t all have to become activists overnight ” Lets not make the same mistake as the Victorians, resting on our laurels and stroking our egos. Let’s own up to our shortcomings and be enthusiastic about building a better future for everyone. Let’s step outside of our contemporary context and envision a world that is better. No one believes our world is perfect beyond improving. We tell ourselves that things are good enough as they are because we don’t have time to change the world. The pressures of the modern world mean we don’t have time to whittle away the weight under which we are all crushed, all we can do is bear the burden and get on with our lives. But we don’t all have to become activists overnight. All it takes is hope. Hope in a better future. Belief that we can achieve a world that isn't the 1% against the 99%. If we believe in a world that is more harmonious, cohesive, and happy, we can look for opportunities to guide the world there. Be the change you want to see in the world, enact that change, create that change. And this June 8th vote, vote for a party that you believe will make the world a better place. nyone who knows me will tell you that I am seldom stuck for words but last Tuesday, after a great night out, I awoke to the appalling news of the terrorist attack in Manchester. Callous, cowardly, unforgivable, words that hardly touch the sides of what is becoming all too often a part of our lives. On my show Queersay each week I struggle to find a balance of good news and bad news stories, there are so many dreadful things happening in the world on a daily basis – and that area of weekly research is only looking at things that affect the LGBT+ world. If I were to be charged with looking beyond that world for my show then I might find a few more good news stories, discounting the clutter of fake news and PR spin of course. What I don't want to do here is downplay the atrocities that are being perpetrated against LGBT+ people around the world, far from it and on Queersay each week I talk very frankly with my guests about these stories. But when you read about a suicide bomber who is prepared to murder indiscriminately then your heart sinks. As I write this, and I am writing as the news is still coming in, I am filled with dread that once again this act has been carried out in the name of some god, but what possible kind of god could believe that this is right. I no longer believe in any god, I'm not a rampant atheist, far from it – but my once held faith has now gone. I have many friends who are believers, not just in a Christian god but in all manner of deities. I hope and believe that those people who have such faiths are equally dismayed that such acts can be carried out in the name of their chosen god. Surely this must be true, I mean how can you have faith in a violent and vengeful god?
“ I am writing as the news is still
coming in, I am filled with dread ”
One of my favourite guests on Queersay is Michael Hydes, the vicar at the Village Metropolitan Community Church. He is a man of real integrity and intelligence. He looks at faith and his faith with a remarkably open mind and heart and I hold him in great stead when we have to discuss atrocities carried out in the name of religion. Right now though all I can think of is the terrible grief of those affected by that terrible bomb. By the time this hits the streets no doubt we will know more, we may know who and why. My heart goes out to the families of those who suffered the loss or injury of a loved one. My heart goes out equally to those genuine believers, and I know they are out there, members of churches and faiths whose good hearts and good intentions are sullied by the evil minds of the few. I normally try to add a fun image to illustrate these words but this week I will simply add a single simple flower in respect of the innocent lives lost. LATEST 7 | 7

hef Kanthi Thamma has made something of a name for himself on the restaurant scene, with his Ship Street venue and his station takeaway outlet, so when he launched the new restaurant in Kemp Town, I was fascinated to see what he would do. It would be all too easy for his team to replicate the previous successes, but this was not for Mr Thamma. In Kemp Town the model is very different, still building on his passion for authentic regional cuisine, here the concept is far more for smaller plates, encouraging sharing and a sense of experimentation on the part of the diner. Well I'm all for that. There are a few curries on the menu but this is definitely not a curry house in the old sense of the word. I went along for dinner with Mr M, back from his Euroroost for a few weeks. Mr M is a great person to share this kind of meal with as he has a mighty passion for trying new food and when inspired a mighty appetite to match. We were both inspired so you can see that our appetites were given full range. First came a bowl of street snacks with his signature fresh chutneys. Mr Thamma makes incredible samosa with perfectly spiced fillings and crisp pastry and his pakora are always super crispy and dry, unlike so much street style food which can be rather greasy. The same can be said of his papads, crisp and dry and pretty addictive when coupled with his amazing chutneys. The same can be said of his naan breads which are thin and crisp and blistered perfectly. All this and we were only just starting.

“ I am a fan of mussels and Kanthi's mussel dish is simply brilliant ” I am a fan of mussels and Kanthi's mussel dish is simply brilliant, as good as mussels get in a spicy broth that compliments rather than drowns the shellfish. I could eat this dish every day and never tire of it. The same could be said of the tandoori lamb cutlet which is so well judged in both its spicing and cooking, an absolute meaty joy. Southern fried chicken is another gem from his kitchen where tradition is matched by inspired invention, succulent spicy strips of chicken breast in a dry spice rub that makes you realise that a certain colonel has no idea what to do with a chicken. Having declared the mussels my favourite dish I was then challenged by an incredible tandoor cooked mackerel, crisp skinned, fragrant with herbs and served with an amazing mango salsa and on the side a sharp pepper salad. The perfectly cooked flesh simply fell cleanly from the bone in delicious succulent chunks, the sweet mango and spicy salad lifting those fresh flakes of fish to new heights and once again not masking the true flavours of these well sourced ingredients. When it comes to spicing Mr Thamma is a genius and well deserving of the acclaim he is getting from far and wide. t’s happened again. We’ve gone into the month of May, worrying about whether the outside performances will stand up to wind and the rain, complaining that it looks like late snow will be arriving any minute now to disrupt Fringe City, and come out the other end blinking blindly at the bright sunshine that greets the arrival of June. I say this, because I did the classic May mistake. I got sunburnt. The first day I caught a tinge of colour was when I had two hours between Brighton Fringe activities to kill. I’d just gone on a most fascinating walking tour (Notorious Women of Brighton, as you’re asking) and it was lunchtime. My next show wasn’t until 4pm, and while I had a quick shufty through the brochure to see if any of the other shows I’d wanted to go to on this particular Sunday might fit into the gap, they also started at 4pm, or 4.15pm. And it was sunny. And I was hungry. And I had just started a new book. So I bought myself a sandwich, found a bench on one of our lovely green squares overlooking the beach, and settled in.
“ By the time it was time to go I was deeply immersed in the land of Oz ” By the time it was time to go I was deeply immersed in the land of Oz (it’s one of those spinoffs from the original legendthings) and had a neat line at the side of my face where the right arm of my spectacles had masked me from the sun. Those benches are at an angle, you know, which was why this was only on one side of my face. The slightly pink bits on either side of my white line didn’t hurt, and I found it rather amusing. Took me back to the times at school when we’d come back from the holidays and compare white marks where everyone had deliberately kept their watches in so that they could highlight their tan contrast. Two days later and I had a lunchtime again. Only an hour this time, so I found a seat on a bench in the same square – but this time on the opposite side. Time to give my left side a lookin, I thought. And thus I burnt both arms, my forehead and – that all important left spectacle mark. Oh yeah. Not all time in the sunshine is equal. I could feel it burning. I was gonna put some lotion on after I ate my lunchtime banana – so that my lunchtime banana didn’t taste of lotion from my hands. I didn’t get around to eating my lunchtime banana. Oh. So, the moral of this story is – wear sunscreen! Every glimpse of summer is precious, but by golly every glimpse doesn’t have to count. 10 | LATEST 7

REVIEWS > Brightonbased comedy dance, ancient Greek soothsayers and supernatural cats An Evening With Picador Poetry icador Poetry celebrated its twenty year anniversary with a stunning evening of performances from Hollie McNish, Glyn Maxwell, Lorraine Mariner, Richard Osmond and Kate Tempest. Introduced by Don Paterson, the poets covered a range of topics from teenage love to ancient Greek soothsayers, from nature to tea, new gods to chaos. There was laughter, thoughtfulness, politics and angst. Each poet had something to say. And then there was Kate Tempest – stepping away from the microphone, combining pieces from several poems together in a passionate performance of modern myths and ageold themes. Wonderful, evocative, compelling and dynamic.

It's okay, I'm dealing with it omedy dance? It's a hard sell. Combining things with comedy so rarely works well; take comedy songs, for example, not as good as normal music, not as funny as straight up stand up. Of course, as you can tell from the start rating, The Hiccup Project are the full package – genuinely good dancers, genuinely funny. It's okay, I'm dealing with it riffs on vulnerability, whipping from an excellent improvised war against it complete with crazed viking and king costumes, to a more quiet reflection on a difficult moment in each of their lives. At a push you could say the tonal shifts occasionally get a little confusing and the show drops just that tiny bit too much energy partway through, but those are minor quibbles in an otherwise storming, silly, sweet show that is quite unlike anything else you'll see this year.
Nick Revell ick didn't have time to write a new show and appeared tonight to explain why. Basically, he made the mistake of adopting a stray cat, taking it to the vet for its jabs and then trying to save the planet after the neural lace that was implanted so she could speak and understand English led to a plot for global domination. This surreal flight of fancy was like a cat lover's comic version of The Thirty Nine Steps meets Blade Runner and filled with a fully developed supporting cast of zombie rats, scientific geniuses and the inevitability of cats enslaving human kind.
