strive to avoid hyperbole and delusions of grandeur in my criticism, and am wary of reviews that read more like creative writing (or just flowery attention seeking) than a discernible discussion of the thing itself. Bearing that disinclination in mind, I can’t help but argue that The Gabriels at Brighton Festival is a show that will be looked back upon as both a monumental achievement in itself, and also a fascinating document of a difficult time. That’s not to say it’s a worthy or pompous attempt at being current affairsy or zeitgeisty however. Richard Nelson’s trilogy of plays are held around a table in the kitchen of The Gabriels family, who converse naturally, without loudly projecting lines or melodramatic payoffs. The wellrounded, believable characters discuss their lives in a grounded and relatable manner, and the subtitle ‘Election Year in the Life of One Family’ almost feels a MacGuffin at times. 2016’s America seeps through however. One character discusses her play, which is solely unedited transcriptions of Hilary Clinton’s speeches, designed to highlight Clinton's strength and conviction that got lost in the maelstrom of the election. The most effective commentary was more subtle however, in the characters’ dismay at changing attitudes in society. A carpenter is exasperated with a rich man who insists on haggling down a fair price, a caterer is irked by the disdain of her rich patrons, a whole community is belittled by a weekender journalist’s condescending article. The Gabriels succeeds in ruminating on both the death of a family member, and the death of a nation and a way of life. But it does so with astonishing warmth and sensitivity, resulting in a uniquely quiet polemic, and also simply a stunning play. Let’s hope that we get more of Richard Nelson’s work in the UK.

he other day I sat down to a Sunday roast with my father. We do this occasionally – go out just the two of us and have quiet chats about how the rest of the family are doing, have I seen my cousins lately, has he seen their father... you know the kind of thing. Times being as they are, I decided to take the plunge and I raised the sticky issue of politics. He had been out doing a bit of campaigning locally to him for the Conservative Party. My mother has always been pretty strongly Labour. I’m very pleased to have Caroline Lucas as my MP. And we have family members who vote Liberal. I like to think that we’re a freethinking family. Anyway, normally I tend to presume that my father and I have different ideas on certain aspects of government and just leave it at that. No point in getting into an argument when we’re both pretty certain we’re right. But no one ever changed any minds – or had their minds changed – by just presuming, and so I asked him why he thought that the Conservatives were the best party to vote for in the coming election.
“ The thing is, I respect my father. I know he’s a thinker ” The thing is, I respect my father. I know he’s a thinker. I know he cares about the world. So I genuinely wanted to hear what he had to say. And what was nice was that he respected me too. He said his points and allowed me to say mine. We asked each other questions about our intel, and about practicalities of policy. We both admitted certain ignorances. Pretty nifty for a father daughter lunchtime. I don’t know how much our conversation may have changed how either one of our plans to vote, but the fact that we could have it without dismissing the other is something I’m very pleased about. My Facebook feed sees echochambers of the leftwing calling out media bias, the rightwing flinging accusations of anti Semitism, tips on how to spot fake news, and lots of memes ranging from sharp political satire to just plain insulting, no matter who it’s aimed at. Surely after the fiasco that was Brexit felt like it split the country in two, a sneaky chasm that appeared like a missing bridge blown up by Wile E. Coyote, the only way forward is to keep talking to each other. The less we vilify anyone who thinks differently to us, the more we might be able to find a middle ground moving forward. No one puts together a manifesto rubbing their hands together in wicked glee, twisting their moustaches, and declaring that finally evil will rule over us all. Most people mean well. If they haven’t got the best answers, it’s down to us to show them why. And maybe the other way around too. Or possibly, something that neither of us has thought of yet. Think of it – maybe we’re both wrong? 4 | LATEST 7

THE MIKADO Following the highly successful allmale tours of H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance, Sasha Regan returns with the world premiere of the irresistible The Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous operettas

n true topsy turvy fashion, Gilbert and Sullivan’s inherent humour and timeless tunefulness are married with Regan’s wicked sense of fun. This vibrant production successfully pokes playful fun at British politics and institutions. The crazy storyline takes us to 1950s England where a school camping trip is visiting the far away land of Titipu – a place where flirting is banned on pain of death and where tailors can become Lord High Executioners but cannot cut off another’s head, until they have cut off their own! Regan’s idea to transform these much loved classics into all male productions stems from her own experiences performing Gilbert and Sullivan at a single sex school. Her shows are now renowned for playing on the humour that can emerge from these gender changes.
“ Playing on the humour that can
emerge from these gender changes ”
Regan comments: “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing our work playing in some of the most beautiful theatres our country has to offer. 2017 is going to be a great year for us as we bring a brand new staging to our audiences it's beyond exciting.” Sasha was recently awarded the Special Achievement Award at the Off West End Awards 2017 for her contribution to musical theatre. LOVE TO LOVE Love Supreme festival returns, bringing with it the heavyhitters of jazz to Sussex
E
stablished in 2013, and billed as the first jazz and camping festival since the ‘60s, Love Supreme has become an established date in the festival calendar, with a reputation for high quality music that crosses over much more than just pure jazz. From funk to disco, soul to world, and from rock to hip hop, Love Supreme has over the years featured the likes of Chic, Bryan Ferry, Van Morrison, Grace Jones, Jamie Cullum and Burt Bacharach, as well as plethora of stunning acts that touch many musical bases including jazz. Named after the iconic John Coltrane album 'A Love Supreme', this year's threeday event is once again being held in the beautiful, gently undulating grounds of Glynde House. Headlining the festival's main outdoor stage on the Saturday are The Jacksons, celebrating 50 years of show business! Today the group consists of four of the original founding members: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. Expect all the hits, including those that featured a certain Michael Jackson. And relative newcomer Gregory Porter headlines the Sunday. Since bursting onto the scene in 2010 with his debut album ‘Water’, Gregory's career has gone from one success to another. It was 2014 when Porter was firmly established as a souljazz giant by winning the Grammy for best jazz vocal album with ‘Liquid Spirit’, which has gone on to become the most streamed jazz album of all time. Also on the main stage is UK nusoulstress Corrine BaileyRae, the R’n’B jazzpop sounds of London’s Nao, New Orleans' Hot 8 Brass Band – fresh from a sell out Brighton Festival gig – spiritualjazzer Kamasi Washington, who performed an extraordinary set last year, and smooth jazz and disco legend George Benson, an artist who has enjoyed huge mainstream success, perhaps his best known song being 'Give Me The Night’.
“ Hancock is a true icon of modern
music, starting his career as a member of Miles Davis' band ”
Visionary pianist, composer and bandleader Herbie Hancock is headlining the Big Top on the Saturday, the stage that bills itself as showcasing the cream of international and UK jazz. Hancock is a true icon of modern music, starting his career as a member of Miles Davis' band, before embracing synthesisers and funk music for the hit singles 'I Thought It Was You' and 'Rockit'. Also on this stage is jazz pianist Robert Glasper, British soul legend Mica Paris – who will be performing a set of Ella Fitzgerald songs – the new jazzpopsoul sounds of Laura Mvula, and Canada's extraordinary jazzhiphopkrautrock crossover band BadBadNotGood. The Arena stage bills itself as a place to see some of the best newcomers as well as few leftfield gems. Brighton’s afrobeat funksters Lakuta take to the stage on the Friday evening, while the incredible instrumental spacejazzelectronica fusion of The Comet Is Coming is a highlight for the Saturday, along with avantejazzpunkers Sons Of Kemet and trip hopjazz groove merchants Mammal Hands. There’s also some DJ action here courtesy of garage legend Joey Negro, and members of incognito and Brand New Heavies taking it in turns to finish off the Sunday. Elsewhere, the Bandstand stage, situated right in the middle of the site, is a chance to see some very new jazzbased talent out in the open air, while there’s late night action in the Blue In Green bar, situated in the small patch of woodland on site, and which LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

will once again feature the Brightonbased Tru Thoughts label providing the DJs on the Sunday night. Love Supreme is truly a music lover’s paradise. It’s also a very familyfriendly affair, with tonnes of things for children and kids to do. And it caters for those looking to stay for the weekend or just to visit on either the Saturday and/or Sunday. As befits this up market festival, there are plenty of camping and VIP options too. fter a week of standing up at events and talking it made a pleasant change to be invited to a dinner where I was simply a guest. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy talking, hosting chefs at the food festival and food related events, but for once I could sit back and enjoy the company and the food too. This particular event was a Business Club Monthly Supper hosted by the gentlemen at Blanch House. Blanch House was in my view the city's first boutique hotel and very nice it is too, stylish and fun with a very comfortable bar and a dining room perfectly suited to hosting dinners on this scale. I've spoken at business dinners and breakfasts over the years and I am always interested to hear how other people do it. On this occasion it was my old friend Henry Butler from Butler's Wine Cellar who talked us through his business and then the great Portuguese wines that we would be drinking. Henry is always funny and animated and his words went down well. But on this occasion the main speaker was Fiona Shafer from MD Hub. Her talk was fascinating, insightful and not without humour either, they both got that balance perfectly right. As did the kitchen with a meal that was both tasty and satisfying. In a world where too many chefs seem to think that less is more (perhaps more in their banks?) here we were treated to some very good canapés and three delicious courses of food. I had chosen in advance as had we all and to start I had a mackerel dish that was very impressive, a warm timbale of smoky fish with not one bone, quite an achievement in itself, all bound together in a light dressing on a bed of wilted watercress. It was delicious.

Coggings & Co
“ A warm timbale of smoky fish ” My next course was lamb and it was generous to say the least, and at times rather surprising. I love slow cooked lamb, well to be honest I love lamb cooked any way it comes, it's great rare, medium and well done. On this occasion it was slow cooked and tender and wonderfully balanced by the iron rich kale and sweet French beans. The surprise came in the guise of salty anchovies, an excellent match to rich lamb and kale. There was also a good rich and sticky jus and a fondant potato rich in butter but for me just a little too large. I ended my meal with a plate of cheese, simple choices but good quality and served in decently sized portions, how I hate those cheese courses that look like the kitchen has merely smeared bits and bobs onto a plate. My place was by invitation and I was delighted to see so many familiar faces gathered there for good food and good conversation. I guess that to join one needs to ask a member and be invited, but I would certainly return for good food, good debate and good fun. LOUIS MICHAEL Loudmouth

> Reading vs. films & games
I
grew up with my head stuck in a book. My obsession was such that I once spent an entire day reading outside, too engrossed to be conscious of the fact that I was sat in the scorching summer sun for the entire day. To make matters worse that was the first day in my life that I had ever thought wearing a vest would be a good idea, and I paid for my mistake by wearing vest tan lines for the rest of that summer. I doubt I cared much. I was probably more interested in finishing my book than putting on aftersun. That’s what bookworms are like. Their priorities are always structured around books. For years my birthday was greeted with a sigh of relief because there was never any debate about what present to get me; as long as it had words on the page and a beginning, a middle and an end I was happy. But you’ll notice how I speak in the past tense. Sadly, somewhere along the way I wandered from the reader’s road. As I grew older my attention was caught by the allure of technology. Slowly but surely my hands got more used to the feeling of holding a game controller than a book. And eventually the minimal effort of collapsing on the sofa and binge watching Netflix became far more preferable to focusing on words and actually consciously using my brain.
“ A book holds infinite interpretations in its pages ” But there’s a sour taste left in my mouth recently after a few solid hours binge watching or gaming, and I’m left feeling unsatisfied. And in searching to fill that hole I’ve felt myself being pulled back more and more to my books. Since returning to the world of leisure reading I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for the activity. We need reading. Something magical happens when you create a scene in your head. Your brain engages and manifests something for you to see that isn't really there. And suddenly there you are. A bona fide virtual reality simulator, totally free and built into your body. Now you could argue that films are more immersive than books, that it’s more realistic if you can actually see what’s going on instead of trying to imagine it. But in response to that all I can say is that I can remember scenes from books that I’ve read with just as much, if not more detail, than films I’ve watched. A book holds infinite interpretations within its pages, whereas a film leaves room for no interpretation but the director’s. Growing up in the digital age means you are surrounded by distractions. Everywhere you look there’s some shiny new toy or brand new TV show that demands your focus. Take the time out for a book, take a break from constantly looking at screens, take a journey somewhere new. 10 | LATEST 7

W
ith Brighton Pride looming on the horizon I started to wonder whether I would be going along this year. I started to go to Pride events when I was 21. Back then it was very much a protest march and if my memory serves me, we gathered at Thames Embankment and marched through Westminster, on the way shouting at Number Ten and challenging the police with our chant of "2468, is that policeman really straight?". How times have changed. These days the police are likely to be leading the parade in a flamboyant display of uniformed solidarity which, given the weird – in my view – penchant for uniforms that so many gay men have, would seems thoroughly appropriate. It would seem that everyone wants a finger in the Pride pie and surely that has to be a good thing. I mean after all, we did fight for equality and in my book that equality has to be a two way thing. So why did I stop going to Pride a few years ago? Well I think I was not alone in this, I lost faith in what it was all about. I loved it as a protest with an element of celebration, but when the politics started to be stripped away and it simply became a carnival with a stage filled with prepubescent boy bands and girly groups I started to question what was going on. Was this simply an opportunity to drink too much and for the corporate wheels of the pop industry to launch new "talent"?
“ A carnival with a stage filled with prepubescent boy bands ” Of course I am being cynical, and for many the campaigning element remained at the heart of Prides worldwide. Then along came a number of people who brought the whole into disrepute and the whole thing started to fall apart here in Brighton and Hove. Fortunately there were an equal number of people who were equally motivated to restore the event to the sound and legitimate organisation that it once again is, with the opportunity for political voices and campaigners to be heard and the global struggle that the LGBT+ world undeniably still has. We may have come a long way in the UK but elsewhere horrific crimes are being perpetrated by homophobic governments and regimes. It must also be noted that here in Brighton & Hove, our Pride celebrations play a significant part in boosting the city's economy. If you look at the statistics and work out how much money will come into the city across that week in terms of hotels and bars alone, let alone the money that the train companies will make, then it is far from insignificant. So will I be going this year? Too right I will. I will be there, out and proud as ever. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Probably the biggest gig in Brighton this year, the mighty Kraftwerk are performing this Wednesday. Their 3D multimedia concert series has drawn ravenous praise all over the world including the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, Sydney Opera House and many more stunning venues. For anyone who has ever felt the pain of commuting – especially if it was sometime over the last 12 months – the folks behind The Treason Show present a brand new comedy show for you. Southern Fail: The Musical! promises close to the bone humour, catchy songs, and to stick to its timetable.
Saint Etienne are playing at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, performing new music from recently released album Home Counties. There might be some of the old hits but please be kind to their newer material too: they’re not a tribute act.

The crowdfunding trailer for Not Lady Chatterley's Lover caught my eye, and you can catch it at bit.ly/2qjSIZV to see why. The show is a parody of DH Lawrence's novel, where you can expect drama, comedy and raised eyebrows. Ropetackle, Shoreham, 9 June, £10
Wildlife Festival returns with a brilliant lineup including Fatboy Slim, Jess Glynne, Dizzee Rascal and Stormzy. Personally I'd like to see Eric Prydz, formerly of Call On Me fame, just to catch his great track Opus. It opens with arpeggio synths and builds to a ludicrous climax in an utterly bewitching 10 minute long hit single.
Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT)’s new patron comedian Simon Evans brings a new idea, inspired by Laurie Anderson’s ‘Concert For Dogs’ last year. This is Stand Up Comedy For Dogs – with humans allowed along too. REVIEWS > A delirium of metal & colour, unflinching theatre and a scifi space odyssey Tennessee Williams' 27 Wagons Full Of Cotton ne of Fox And Hound Theatre Company’s three Tennessee Williams productions being performed during the Fringe, 27 Wagons Full Of Cotton was a particularly grim melodrama, focusing on those old Williams staples of misogyny and rape, and arson. Following a housewife treated as little more than a bargaining chip between her violent husband Meaghan (a hateable Codge Crawford) and suspicious cotton trader Silva (an equally hateable Steven Carruthers), strong performances, particularly from Helen Fox as the hauntingly wretched Flora, left the audience visibly shaken. This made for an unflinching portrait of the horrors of dysfunctional relationships in times of recession.

Tristan & Yseult neehigh's revival of their 2003 hit Tristan & Yseult brought a joyous, celebratory air to the Theatre Royal: a perfect fit for Brighton Festival. The live band plied a bawdy brand of various styles from pizzicato ethereality to popular covers in the interval. The layered music was a stark contrast to the beguiling, ludicrous antics on stage, which was one of the most captivating romps I've seen in a long time. The sets were a delirium of metal, colour, fire and movement, to which a cappella singing brought a different shade of melody and beauty to the performance. The classic story was vividly acted and surprisingly emotional, yet the melodramatic carnival was of more interest than the narrative. The second half therefore lost momentum slightly with a more melancholy mood, but the sumptuous staging and hilarious performances prevailed. If you like a wild, intelligent ride grounded in a traditional story, like a sort of more subversive, creative panto, then you must see the next Kneehigh production.
The Starship Osiris he dashingly handsome, incredibly arrogant George Vere is hero of The Starship Osiris. George is hysterical as a narcissistic director. He amusingly glorifies himself in the scifi space odyssey he wrote and directed himself. It starts brilliantly with Ian Fleming playing cheesy music, while three highly attractive starlets tunefully sing 'I Need Your Love' to George, as he sensitively remembers his beautiful wife. George belittles his male sidekick Evans. The starlets shun Evans in favour of pouting George, until Evans finally loses it – in a well thought out twist. The show went a bit panto when an audience member was brought on stage and at moments fell flat, but overall it was incredibly funny.
