might sing and dance and write about the live arts scene a lot, but it would be remiss of Latest 7 to not pay attention to other mediums too. I arranged a Project Brighton piece on a successful local app company for example (bit.ly/2s8XQRX), and feature gaming & technology on my Brighton Lights Latest TV show at thelatest.co.uk/brightonlights. One of the most important arts events this year was the release of Persona 5, a wild, idiosyncratic PS4 game which utilises social simulation but is so much more than simple dialogue choices. You play as a Japanese high school student who builds up relationships by spending time with people, learning their foibles, buying gifts and saying the right thing at the right time. The other half of the game focuses on more traditional role playing game elements: there are monsters to defeat using magic, weapons and so on. The beauty of the game lies in how these dungeoncrawling sessions are presented and contextualised. Firstly, a 'dungeon' is in fact a sort of supernatural subconscious for a villain, whose distorted desires manifest in grotesque contorting monsters you have to defeat. Secondly, the game looks fantastic, with high contrast reds and blacks in abundance and hyperstylish presentation. Menu screens are colourful, dialogue boxes have jagged edges that leap around, dramatic realisations are heightened by comic book style exclamations across the screen. Persona 5 is challenging and overwhelming at first, but I urge you to try it out and persevere. I died a few times early on and wondered if the game would be a lengthy slog (completing it clocks in at around 80100 hours) but I’m so glad I stuck with it. It will take me some time to finish but I'm in no rush: the boundless creativity in the game ensures it’s an absolute joy to play.

I
t’s Father’s Day this Sunday which means that my brother, his wife and children, my sister, my other brother, and I will all be heading over to Dad’s place for a barbecue. Pray for good weather for us. My parents went their separate ways when I was eight years old, and not only were they now living in different apartments, but shortly after they were also living on different continents. Which meant that every Sunday my brother and I got a long distance phone call at lunchtime from my father, asking how we were. Each week we also received a letter addressed to the two of us, written on airmail paper (who else remembers the tracingpaper thin sheets that went with an envelope with stripes around the edges?) telling us what he’d been up to and responding to whatever we’d told him in our weekly correspondence efforts.
“ It can’t have been easy to find
things to write to two small children ” Thinking about it now, it can’t have been easy to find things to write to two small children yet to enter double figures in age. Before too long his letters brought the news that we were going to have a brother, and then how much our new brother liked to throw his head back and scream – as babies are wont to. After several years the small family moved back to this country, which I found quite discombobulating having gotten used to a ‘holding period’ between my parents on an airplane. I adjusted. And was rewarded with the arrival of my sister. Hurrah! Throughout the Sunday lunchtime phone calls continued. I went away to university and my Dad was patient with the fact that I was possibly less easy to get hold of on Sundays at lunchtime, but he pursued them nonetheless. Now the only times I don’t receive a Sunday phone call, or make one, is when either my Dad or I are out of the country or if we’re seeing each other in person. He continues to forward the one piece of postal mail I “just never seem to get around to correcting the address on”. I finally admitted to him the other day that this might be because I still like to receive something through the letterbox occasionally with his cursive writing spelling out my name on the envelope. Like when I was little. No, you’re soppy! So it’s Father’s Day on Sunday and all of the family that he made, or had a part in making, is descending on him in one fell swoop. With cards. And bags of butter fudge. To tell him that we love him. Good old Dad. 4 | LATEST 7

BALANCING ACT The highly acclaimed farce One Man Two Guvnors comes to Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne
A
n 87yearold trainee waiter with balance problems and a permanently hungry skiffle musician are set to enchant Eastbourne this summer as the Devonshire Park Theatre presents a new production of the Richard Bean juggernaut comedy One Man Two Guvnors from 29 June – 22 July.
“ A dash of pantomime, add a whiff of music hall, multiply by lunacy, divide by full on farce ”
There will be mirth and merriment guaranteed with this Eastbourne premiere of the hilarious comedy which transferred from the National Theatre to become a WestEnd and Broadway smash hit starring James Corden. Take a dash of pantomime, add a whiff of music hall, multiply by lunacy, divide by full on farce, and you have a plot which is as ludicrous as it is hilarious. Pure comic bliss. It’s 1963. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from the dad of his fiancée. But Roscoe is really his twin sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother who has been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up at The Cricketers Arms, Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police for killing Roscoe and waiting to be reunited with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple. Sort of. Based on the classic Italian comedy The Servant Of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, and adapted by prizewinning playwright Richard Bean, with original songs and music by Grant Olding. This new production of One Man, Two Guvnors opens at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre on Thursday 29 June and plays until Saturday 22 July with nightly performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 7.45pm and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. HELEN HOBSON Star of Mamma Mia!, Helen Hobson, talks to Victoria Nangle about returning to the role made famous by Meryl Streep, the songs of Abba, and an appreciation of Tom Waits Hi Helen, how is the tour going so far? Really well, I’m enjoying visiting the local attractions in each venue and have been able to combine family holiday visits with the MAMMA MIA! schedule. Plus the audiences have been so welcoming. Can you remember what first attracted you to the show MAMMA MIA!? I saw the show when it first opened in London and loved the music and the three female characters who were firm friends, really appealed to me. I also fell in love with the character of Donna and put the role on my goal list of parts I wanted to play! Donna is a role that you’ve stepped away from and returned to. Do you find something new each time you approach her, or is she an old friend you just grow more fond of? Perhaps a bit of both? This time we have had more time in rehearsals and so Paul Garrington (director) has really pushed me to explore a new
Donna. Improvisation, discussion and working with open and talented cast members has really been a treat this time around. Many people come to the role first as played by Meryl Streep in the film. How did you make it your own? I just try to play the truth of the story, guided by the creatives. Hopefully I then create my own Donna. What is your favourite song in the show to perform, and why? This is such a difficult question… when I am in each moment, singing each song… that is my favourite! If pushed? Possibly ‘Dancing Queen’, it seems to make everyone smile and get up and dance! If you had the ear of Benny and Bjorn, are there any ABBA songs you would add to the show’s songbook which aren’t currently there? Maybe they could pen a brand new song? For Bill and Donna? We don’t get to sing together!
Are there any bands or musicians of this century’s pop charts that you think could deliver a songbook musical from their catalogue? What do you think it might be like?
do get an extraordinary re energising at the end of the show from the audience. Having told the whole story and then the extra concert at the end? Can I do this? Then there is a roar, the audience stands up and off we go!
“ Can I do this? Then there is a roar, the audience stands up and off we go! ”
Why do you think that musicals are so emotive – and the music of ABBA fits so well within this canon? Our musical has a story that people can relate too, the lyrics in the songs are also very much telling a story, the combination of the two makes it very powerful.
Maybe Tom Waits, his tunes and lyrics can be pretty powerful, moving and painful to listen to at times. Not exactly uplifting perhaps! MAMMA MIA!’s warmth brings back repeat audiences – is it sometimes difficult to radiate that warmth as a cast every night and twice on matinees, no matter what life throws at you? That is the job of an actor, to leave your troubles at the stage door and try to step in and do your job. I find that you
Are you looking forward to bringing the show to Brighton? Very much. I’m bringing my family as it falls in the summer holidays so what better way to spend my summer? Beaches, ABBA and storytelling! All in the iconic seaside town. Mamma Mia, Brighton Centre, Tuesday 15 August – Sunday 3 September 2017; matinees 2.30pm & 3pm, 9.45pm, eveings 7.30pm; £15–50, brightoncentre.co.uk

attling alongside the Brighton Festival and Fringe, my attentions always turn at the end of May to the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. Well it would as I am so heftily involved. Firstly, to avoid any confusion, this is not the Foodies Festival, a commercial enterprise charging around £14 entry. No, ours is free access, a community event on Hove Lawns that engages with food lovers and their families and friends. There are some ticketed events too, but the monies raised are all invested in perpetuating this annual event now entering its 15th year. This season I had a ball. After the launch my first event was at The Chilli Pickle where we hosted and enjoyed a fabulous dinner matched with Johannishof Riesling wines presented by winemaker Johannes Eser, great food, wine and company. The next day was our bestselling Food Lab at 64 Degrees where six chefs are charged to work with six local producers to create six stunningly inventive dishes. It's always exciting to see what they do and this year was no exception, and it delayed me heading off on the Food Trail where local restaurants and bars offer tasters from their menus to participants, great fun! My next outing was to a Pommery dinner at Harbour Hotel where a room of food lovers were treated to dinner matched with copious amounts of excellent champagne. Well what's not to love about that.

“ A dangerous evening that needs a risk assessment ” Next the Three Chef's Go To The Movies event at 1847 – three chefs, three films and three exciting dishes, a format that always delivers and this season a vegetarian treat from three of the city's best restaurants, 64 Degrees, Isaac @ and of course 1847. Friday night is always Make Your Case night and this ever popular event sees the first of my presenting roles, a dangerous evening that needs a risk assessment as 80 people tuck into 10 wines, tasting blind and judging the wines and the professional presenters, fast and furious, fun and games for all, and a serious amount of charity fundraising for the Rockinghorse. Then three days on Hove Lawns at the large Sussex And The World event and the place where I host the Live Food Show with the city's top chefs, too many to mention here but all delivering great dishes at the top level of culinary art. On the Monday I gave my time to supporting Fareshare by joining Helen from Metrodeco and creating a zingy gazpacho from surplus foods and selling them to raise both awareness and funds for this most important of charities. Finally the final of the cocktail competition, a tough job but as they say, someone has to do it. So with nerves of steel I headed in and helped judge the final winner from the first Brighton Cocktail Week. A brilliant ten days and look out for more this August bank holday. brightonfoodfestival.com

LOUIS MICHAEL Loudmouth

> The changing lot of the parent
M
y dad said something interesting to me recently. We were talking and he suddenly said: “what am I going to do?” and when I asked him what was wrong he just replied, “I have four children all in their twenties.” For context I’m the youngest of four children. My parents had their first child a few years after they married, my second sister came a year and a half after her, then my brother, and finally myself, putting seven years between the oldest and youngest. Now on the surface it may seem as if I’m completely unqualified to write this column, because I’ve never been a parent. I know nothing of what it must feel like to have a baby and watch it change from a totally dependant, innocent little child into an autonomous, opinionated, fully functioning adult. Going through all that once would be lifechanging enough, let alone four times. But as I pondered my dad’s dilemma I began to empathise with a position I had never been in. I imagined what it must be like to create a human being, to wait all those months to finally meet it, to love it the second you see it.
“ I imagined what it must be like to create a human being ” To decorate the room and read all the parenting books, to trade adult conversation for ABCs, to get used to the smell of sick. To get up in the middle of the night to the sound of screaming, to get used to nothing but the sound of screaming, to feel as if you’re about to snap because of all the screaming, and then to look into their eyes and remembering why you put up with the screaming. I imagined what it must be like to have a person, a life, an entire world in your care, and to feel the responsibility to ensure that that world is given all the sufficient knowledge, support and love in order for it to flourish and become vibrant and joyous. And then I imagined what it must be like for those worlds to begin resisting your gravity, to start drifting away from your orbit. Suddenly the system you’ve had in place for so long, that you’ve strived so hard to keep in perfect working order, is breaking up. And suddenly you’re forced to face up to the fact that this was all temporary. On thinking on my dad’s dilemma I’ve decided that as children become adults, parents must adjust to the end of their first phase and transition into a new phase where their primary duty is no longer to protect, but rather to support. But there’s nothing wrong with this. How many films have you seen where the supporting character stole the show? 10 | LATEST 7

T
here's grooming and there's "grooming", if like me you are a Corrie fan then you will know exactly what I mean as poor Bethany's terrible tale unravels. But right now I am concerned with grooming as in pampering and personal detail. I've long been a fan of the occasional manicure, massage and tonsorial titivation (look it up). Why not indulge in a little ‘me time’. But the whole idea of male grooming was for so long seen as… well let's not mince words… pouffy, the domain of the poncey queen. Well stop right there! Think again, you only need to walk down any high street or shopping mall, drift into any bar or club to see that the straight world is out their getting a fake tan, a manicure and, dare I say it, a back crack and sack (reels in horror, and not available I hasten to say on this particular day). Local company Red 7 have taken all this into account and whilst organising a wide range of hen and stag parties both here and abroad are now offering a rather more sophisticated option of a pampering day. Of course I was first in the queue to have a go, albeit not in advance of any nuptial ceremony. So I started out with a beer and a chat at Lipstick And Gunpowder before heading over the road for a manicure and glass of prosecco (declined) at Pretty People just across the road. First class, I do like having nice nails. I could have opted for a back massage too but a manicure is a real must if you want to cut the mustard as a dandy.
“ A manicure is a real must if you
want to cut the mustard as a dandy ”
Back then to Lipstick And Gunpowder where my unruly locks were beaten into submission by a talented stylist and my beard and ‘tache given a new look which I am delighted with, sharper by far than the tangled mess it had become. All that in place, it was round to Bison Beer for a tasting. Well it would have been rude to say no and I have to say the craft ales we tried were fascinating, one even having overtones of Irn Bru – well I do have a very sophisticated palette. All done I felt and I hope looked a million dollars, relaxed and spruced up and certainly ready for a cocktail and a nibble at the Pitcher & Piano before heading off to a smart dinner. You see a stag event can be stylish, so pack away the fancy dress and get fancy in a sophisticated and modern way.
