I

went to Venice recently, and postulate that it constitutes a cautionary tale for the future of Brighton. Venice is undeniably a beautiful, unorthodox city with a captivating history, and unique houses that look like they are sinking into the water in endearingly ramshackle fashion. The Biennale was stunning too, with hundreds of diverse art works of an often impressive scale, and a startling variety of exhibitions in beautiful environments. Another aspect that stood out however, is that almost all of the people we saw were tourists, and the vast majority of shops and restaurants were geared towards tourists rather than locals. I discovered that Venetians have protested about being overrun by tourists in fact (bit.ly/2cKMGgD). I was obviously part of the problem having booked an Airbnb: a lot of property is now being utilised in such a way to profit from tourists, which is what made me consider Brighton’s situation. If housing prices continue to rise, and the properties we do have available are purchased by buytolet investors (or rented by Airbnb users) then what will happen to the culture of Brighton? Will we run out of great local venues and pubs in exchange for overpriced pastiches of culture, rather than the real thing? If students, graduates, families, or workers on low or average incomes can't afford to settle in or even anywhere near Brighton, how will the essence and atmosphere of the place change? Tourism is obviously hugely beneficial to Brighton and I don't have space here to do justice to issues such as property prices, the balance of tourists to locals, and so on. But I think that we could look to the problems Venice is facing as a warning for what could happen if we're not careful. Imagine the tourist theme park we might end up with, replacing the vibrant cultural hub we know today.

I

hate picking a favourite. What’s your favourite ice cream? Well, tell me what I’ve just eaten and I’ll tell you what flavour I’ll want next – fruity or chocolatey. ‘What’s your favourite colour?’ is the preschooler’s equivalent of the pub and party smalltalk standard ‘So what do you do?’. To be honest, I really hate that one too ever since an ex of mine confided that it did his nut in. He scored orchestral arrangements for pop groups that regularly charted but generally got most of his income as a data entry person. Stating where his pay check came from didn’t really cover his passions.

“ You don’t even know me and you’re making smalltalk with a view to getting into a fight? ”

‘What’s your favourite...’ also seems all too ready to get us to jump through hoops and into a pigeonhole. It defies context. And asks for a hierarchy. Which invariably leads to an argument. So you don’t even know me and you’re making smalltalk with a view to getting into a fight? What kind of rascal are you?! During the month of May I was frequently asked what my favourite shows were that I had seen in the Brighton Fringe, which led to my best startled kipper impersonation. I just don’t know, because all of the best ones made me feel such different things that they’re hardly comparable. And you’re asking for my top ten. And then you’ll judge me on them. It goes back to school years and beyond. I remember asking my mother whether she was a fan of the Rolling Stones or The Beatles, and feeling a little distance between us when she proudly told me she’d used her sharp elbows to get to the front of a Stones gig as a teenager. I’d sung from the Beatles songbook at school. The Stones were a bit more scary. That distance narrowed as I got older though and I learned enough to be proud of my Mum’s street cred. But again, judging her on a forced ‘favourite’. ‘Read any good books lately?’ is kinder than ‘What’s you’re favourite book?’. And it opens up for a discussion, rather than a disagreement. One of the most impassioned arguments I’ve ever had was with a highly respected criminal barrister, with him determined to have the last word on which was better – Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket. We used all of our clever words on one of our most ludicrous clashes. It became a battle rather than a conversation. Why does one thing have to be better than another? So please, don’t ask me for a favourite. Don’t ask anyone for a favourite. It’s one of my least favourite things. 4 | LATEST 7

K AT Y B R A N D After ‘Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show’, a novel, appearing in the likes of Peep Show, Mapp And Lucia, and Walking On Sunshine, Ms B is telling now her own stories live on stage. Victoria Nangle finds out more Hi Katy, how are you doing on this fine day? It is a fine day – a bright spring day, in fact, which is my favourite kind of day. You can walk around in the sun and yet not pour with sweat – it’s the kind of day where everyone looks well lit, as if by an Oscar winning cinematographer. How did writing your novel Brenda Monk Is Funny (about a stand up comic) change your own relationship with live performance? It reminded me how free you can be as a live performer – you are in total control, if you want to be. In TV or film, anything you write has to go through 15 people, who all give notes. When you perform live, you just say, ‘I’m going to do this’, and then you do it. It is exhilarating. On a more practical note, doing a promotional tour for the book was the first time I had been onstage as ‘myself’ and I enjoyed it, and that gave me the confidence to try standup (rather than sketches), and so, here I am! What made you return last year with this personal storytelling show, having already become well known and respected for your comedy characters? Well, as I said, the book tour was a big part of it – I realised

I could perform live in a way I found more spontaneous, relaxed and free than sketch comedy. And also, crucially, I had an idea for a show that I felt would work, and that is half the battle – I had stories to tell, and I thought they were interesting and funny stories. I also felt there was something relevant about talking about religious fundamentalism. So I guess the stars aligned in that way they occasionally do. It felt right.

“ If I can’t see

anyone, I might as well be on TV ” Was the live experience how you’d remembered it? Yes, although the performance style was different, the actual experience was the same, and all the things I learned over the many gigs I did as a character comedian were still applicable. That feeling of flying when it’s going well never gets old…. What makes I Was A Teenage Christian more suitable for theatres, as opposed to the arenasized venues of Katy Brand’s Big Ass Tour?

I have always preferred smaller venues to perform in – I like the audience to feel close, and I like to be able to see people from the stage. I find the intimacy of it more satisfying – it becomes a proper shared experience, which for me is part of the point of live shows. If I can’t see anyone, I might as well be on TV. What would you like to offer as an alternative to becoming a teenage Christian to 13 yearold girls out for a bit of a personal epitome, these days? I don’t think being a Christian is the end of the world (even though all you want as a Christian is the end of the world…) – there were positive things about it – I didn’t do drugs, I didn’t get pregnant at 15, I had people around me who offered support. All that stuff is good. But I think if you are curious about the world and want a sense of purpose, there are other things you can set your mind to – read the top 100 books by women authors, learn everything you can about space, become a brilliant footballer. Really, it’s about finding a purpose, and finding your people. It doesn’t have to involve weird socially conservative dogma – that’s the bad bit of Christianity…. You seem to be a bit of a creative adventurer – a lot of

the best people are – with Let’s Dance For Sports Relief (thank you for your Beyoncé), Strictly Come Dancing, BBC Shakespeare… as well as writing, performing and acting. What burning ambitions do you still harbour? I have tried lots of things because I have been curious about what I really want to do – where I feel creatively at home. I loved writing my book, I’m really enjoying doing hour long standup shows. But I think what I would love is to write and direct a film at some point. Would you ever take part in any more reality/challenge television programmes – and if so, which ones? Never say never. There are a few that I am highly unlikely to ever do, but new ones are invented all the time – if they do one about celebrities eating crisps, I’m in. I’m a champion crisp eater. What is your secret to five minutes of happiness? The smell of coconut oil on hot skin under a tropical sun, with nothing to do and nobody to please but myself. n amongst my trips out to dine I attend the occasional wine tasting too, yes I know, my life is blessed. This time it was down to Hove and the excellent Fourth & Church, a fabulous blend of great foods and wine to eat in or to take home. The wine element of the evening was being coordinated by none other than Henry Butler and the six wines presented by two excellent and entertaining Portuguese wine makers from wine estates Soalheiro and Raza. The format of the evening was simple enough, each wine being matched to a delicious dish created in the Fourth & Church kitchens. Well I say each being matched with a dish but for the first wine, Raza 2016, there were three very generous crostini. The first a tapenade with goats cheese that matched the fresh and slightly sparkling wine brilliantly, then morcilla and broad bean with mint, again a great and this time deeper flavoured match and finally skordelia with capers showing how well the wine would work with creamy fish and sharp capers. The next wine Raza Arinto 2014 was served with my favourite dish of the evening, gurnard with mussels in a coconut milk sauce with Goan spices. Goa and Portugal are linked so strongly that this seemed an ideal idea and in execution it proved to be just that, gentle spicing, full flavoured fish and a wine that lived up to both.

Señor Buddha is a modern tapas bar located at Preston Circus, offering an ever changing tapas menu based around Spanish and East Asian cuisine. Coggings & Co

“ The wines were demanding of great invention ” Next Soalheiro Terra Matter 2015, an interesting wine, delicious but unfamiliar was paired with mackerel, tomato and salsa verde, a robust combination but one that was certainly needed for this most interesting of wines. I loved both but could see that the wine would certainly not be to everyone’s taste. Raza Vinho 2015 next and with it duck confit croquette with spiced plum and fennel salad. The kitchen was being very inventive and rightly so as the wines were demanding of great invention. This was stunning, truly a match made in heaven with the rich duck balanced by the sharp plum and the aniseed fragrance of the fennel. Finally we drank Soalheiro Opacco and to balance this lamb koftes with aubergine pickle and tzatziki. Now I love lamb but I love aubergine even more these days, I cannot get enough. This classic combo was right up my street and I was delighted when offered a second plate. Which leads me to say that the food was served in generous portions, small plates rather than canapes, and the same for the wines, no sip, swirl and spit nonsense, no far from it. We were all there to enjoy drinking great wines, eating tasty food and going home feeling entertained and satisfied. erhaps the only good thing to come of Brexit was that it got me engaged with politics in preparation for this election. Had it not been for the foundations laid by the Leave/Remain discussions I might not have had any idea what people were talking about when they spouted off about strong and stable governments and Brexit negotiations. And thank god I did, because this was not an election period in which you could afford to be left behind. Jeremy Corbyn has left a mark on British politics that will be acknowledged for many years to come. Under his leadership Labour have destroyed Blairism. For those who don’t understand what the death of Blairism means, it means the return of political sincerity in the Labour party and the return of Labour politicians who are genuinely concerned with the best interest of the country’s population. Blair weaselled his way in by forsaking the values of Labour, with lies, manipulation and the help of Rupert Murdoch. But Murdoch’s reign of propaganda is over thanks to the record breaking 72 per cent youth turn out.

“ Labour have destroyed Blairism ” In the words of Orwell: "The people will not revolt. They will not look up from their screens long enough to know what is happening”. But the fantastic thing is that not only did we revolt, we did it with our screens. Social media has completely obliterated any of the influence that tabloids may have previously held over the population. In terms of strengthening the party this is the best result Labour could have hoped for. Rather than having to deal with messy and potentially party damaging Brexit negotiations Jeremy can focus the next five years on consolidating his success, investing in his newly solidified youth support, and forming a strong enough government to overthrow the Tories in the next election (and who knows when that will be?). Overall June 8th provided a thoroughly unexpected outcome, but one that Labour can be immensely proud of. On the other hand the arrogance of the Tory party has left them broken. Corbyn's authority is strengthened going into the next five years, and although the outcome of the hung parliament remains to be decided at the time of writing, this is undoubtably a period of celebration for Labour and devastation for the Tories. This result was about Corbyn's well deserved personal success, and the success of youth voters for speaking out and refusing to be marginalised. It may not be the dream result, but we can build on the momentum of Corbyn's hat trick success and who knows what could happen in five years’ time. 8 | LATEST 7

righton and Hove, we're awards crazy, barely a week goes by without some event of celebration taking place. I’m not complaining, it’s great that we have so much to celebrate surely, although there are perhaps rather too many in certain sectors. A week ago I was invited to attend and present a couple of awards at the Golden Handbag Awards ceremony, held once again at the Hilton Metropole. It was a massive affair with hundreds of representatives of our beautiful LGBT+ community, many of them nominees, many supporters and by no means all of us gay. The evening was hosted by the irrepressible Lola Lasagne and few could have controlled the over excited attendees better, firm but fair in my view and very funny too. There was cabaret too with the leg end that is Maisie Trollete heading rapidly to his 85th birthday and still able to belt out a tune and hold the audience. Equally impressive was Kara Van Park, full throttle chanteuse and confident performer on all levels. I wasn't enamoured of Myra Dubois who seemed flustered in the delivery of what was good material and let down by poor vocals but hey, he was late arriving and no doubt thrown by that. I was sat on the Mayor’s table and right next to our new Mayor Cllr Mo Marsh, a tiny bundle of exuberant fun. She was paired up in presenting with the force that is Dave Lynn, poor Mo, she stood very little chance of getting a word in. I was luckier in presenting with Kemp Town’s new Labour MP, hooray, Lloyd RussellMoyle who got a rousing round of applause as did Sophie Cook when I pointed out her tremendous achievement in East Worthing and ShorehambySea.

“ Hundreds of representatives of our beautiful LGBT+ community ” But the highlight for me was at the end of the evening when local hero, editor of Gscene and creator of the awards James Ledward, made his special award to a lady that I hold in the highest esteem. Finola Brophy is chair of the Rainbow Chorus a tireless figure for that organisation alone. But her tireless approach to what she does is far more farreaching than just that and James made it fully clear just how hard this lady works and for so many causes and organisations. It was a fun evening enjoyed by all, although the kitchen might need to reconsider the sandwiches that we were served, not a good indication of what one might expect from a prestige hotel. It is great to see how the community gets behind these wide ranging awards and hats off once again to James Ledward and his team for once again making this happen. BRIGHTON LIGHTS WHAT TO DO IN THE CITY > MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WITH JOE FULLER

1

I saw Richard Dawson at West Hill Hall a few years ago and he was great, with his raw yelping combining with clanging guitar to lyrical effect. Recently released album Peasant is melodic and propulsive, a style that is even more impactful live. Dawson is a perfect antidote to the twee sentimentality of your typical open mic night singer songwriter. The Old Market, 25 June, 7.30pm, £15

2

The Flaming Lips are a prolific band with a vast back catalogue of strong albums, mixed with some more whimsical fluff. What remains constant however are their great shows, so the gig next week will be colourful, bombastic fun.

> COMEDY WITH VICTORIA NANGLE

5

The hairy comedy rock star himself – Russell Brand – is back on tour with a completely new show entitled ‘Re:Birth’. Unsurprisingly, he’s been greatly affected by the birth of his daughter, and in this personal comic perspective Brand ponders what advice he would give her in a world that appears to be changing rapidly. Lucky old us, due to popular demand Brand’s even added an extra date on 25 July, so he’ll be back again soon. Assembly Hall, Worthing Theatres, Tues 27 June, 8pm, £29

6

Komedia’s Edinburgh preview season started last weekend and promises loads of great comic talents, offering up their work in progress shows in double header performances at an incredible discount price of £8 for two comedians. This week catch Gordon Southern, Rhys James, Matt Forde and Rose Marafeo – with other gems like Steve Bugeja, Angela Barnes, Shappi Khorsandi, and Larry Dean to come. Komedia, various dates, various times, £8

Brighton Dome Concert Hall, 27 June, 8.30pm, £30

Inspired by a short story by the brilliant writer David Foster Wallace, Focus Group* *or How to Stare Down & Transfigure Loneliness1, is a black comedy exploring the absurdity of consumer culture. The smart and disturbing show should be a thinker. The Old Market, 28 June, 7pm & 9pm, £10/£12.50

> Flit, Flap & Fly, Brighton Dome is engaging with a younger audience and for free

A

s a theatre lover and regular attendee from a very early age I am often saddened by two things. Firstly the ever increasing age of the audiences that I am part of. I have to say that as a man in my early 60s I am often in the lower age bracket of those assembled. Secondly I notice that when there are younger people in the audience many of them seem not to realise that, unlike a DVD or a computer stream, live theatre can neither be paused or rewound. It happens live and once only at any given performance. There you have it, a moan I know but a heartfelt one and one promoted by reading about a piece of theatre not only created for young

audiences, very young, but also one that is free to see. Now what could be better than that and hats off to Brighton Dome for making this possible and easily accessible.

“ A young bird's

frantic and funny journey towards independence ”

Flit, Flap & Fly is an adventure that follows a young bird's frantic and funny journey towards independence, and his relationship with his fine singing father. Suitable for all ages (but particularly aimed at

47 year olds and their accompanying big people) the audience is invited to join Chick and Dad in the nest, where they find themselves part of the daily life of a unique bird family. Bursting with live music and audience participation, everyone in the nest can learn birdsongs and get ready to take flight for the first time. Space inside the nest is limited to 30 people, however it is still possible to watch the show from outside of the nest. Brighton Dome is also taking this free show, by Fine Chisel, to Carden, Moulsecoomb and Peter Gladwin primary schools, as well as to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Fine Chisel is a multi award winning theatre company and

band based in Bristol. After five years on the touring circuit making shows for adults, in 2015 they became Associate Artists at the Egg (Theatre Royal Bath’s dedicated theatre for children and young people). The Guardian has described them as: “An engaging company of boundless potential”. This is a terrific opportunity to introduce youngsters to the joy of live performance in an engaging and totally free way, and one that I urge you all to take best advantage of.
