I
was happy to present the Best Open House Award on behalf of The Latest last week, although it was genuinely a very tough decision. Artists’ ‘open houses’ vary so dramatically, and the longlist decided by the public was strong across the board. How can one compare a house with finely crafted jewellery with another purely devoted to painting for example? I won't spoil the surprise for the winner of the Best Open House award and the three houses shortlisted because I like the image of you excitedly scrambling for Latest Homes on the reverse of the magazine to find out. Turn to page 7 of Latest Homes on the flip side of Latest 7 to read about the winners. I’ll highlight some of the good things I encountered on my Latest judging travels to illustrate what you can get out of an AOH wander however. At Villa LVI there was some colourful, attention grabbing paper floristry from Rebecca Martin. I bought a brilliant dinosaur/Brighton make up bag (I think it's a make up bag) from Mc Cready Bags at The Flamingo House, whereas Alan Rankle's paintings at John Constable's Studio were stunning. There was a range of bath salts to peruse at The Stanley Road Store, and Salon Des Sources had some beautiful stained glass and some admirably pointed Trump pin cushions. Milton House had some vibrant fluorescent cushions, and subtle spray paint on wood, while Red Brick House had some fantastic paintings by Sophie Wake. My partner and I both enjoyed Sophie Wake's work and it was nice to see that Handmade at Amazon clearly agreed: by giving her the Best Newcomer Award. Thanks to Artists Open Houses for putting on a great awards night at My Brighton Hotel too, and I look forward to gamboling in people's houses next year.

ALL OR NOTHING The music of The Small Faces comes to life in the telling of the band’s story in a fantastic show
I
n 1964, a new phenomenon exploded on to the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the classridden society and its dull, redundant culture. They were working class, free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘face’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and streetwise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm and Blues.
“ Define a whole genre of music and fashion shaping Mod culture ” All Or Nothing, the Mod musical, features the music of The Small Faces and visits Brighton as part of a national tour. The show opened to critical acclaim and nightly standing ovations at the Vaults Theatre in London in March 2016 and will visit its spiritual home at Theatre Royal Brighton for one week only from Monday 10th – Saturday 15th July. Written by the award winning actress Carol Harrison, All Or Nothing tells the electrifying yet bittersweet tale of Kenney Jones, LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott: four charismatic young kids from East London with humour, attitude, passion and above all talent. They became The Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to fantastic success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and ultimately tragedy. Chris Simmons, who takes on the role of the band’s troubled lead singer Steve Marriott says: “The Small Faces certainly packed a musical punch helping to give a generation of young people a voice and encouraging them to rebel against the stuffier side of Sixties society. They also helped create and define a whole genre of music and fashion shaping Mod culture.” All or Nothing is packed full of all the timeless hits, including the brilliant Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice, Itchycoo Park and of course All or Nothing. So scoot down to Theatre Royal Brighton for a show which is sure to recapture memories for some and create lots of new ones for others. ommunication is very important to me. Words are power, they’re a promise, and they have the strength to turn a mood and to destruct tall buildings with a single sentence. Sometimes, just sometimes mind, they need extra clarification. And something I would like to clarify about asking for clarification, is that it doesn’t mean that I’m saying that the other person is wrong. Maybe it’s because an instruction or idea that isn’t clearly communicated isn’t clearly formed yet. Which would mean that asking for details can be taken as a challenge to this fledgling flight of fancy. Poor fledgling, feeling all squashed like that.
“ An instruction or idea that isn’t
clearly communicated isn’t clearly formed yet ” In asking for details that aren’t there yet I can help this little idea to fly as we share the tasks of building up its plumage, finding the weaknesses, and considering some future patches together. ‘Why?’ is not the same as ‘Why have you come to me with this stupid plan?’. #justsayin. People are coming out of the gate ready for a fight. There have been a lot of fights lately. I’m not a major fighter, it has to be said, so I’m irked when I hear my voice start to rise in volume to match my conversation mate. This is not who I like to think that I am. Which is not to say it’s not who I can be. It’s not their fault that I’m also getting into fighting mode, matching them subconsciously. But... as soon as it becomes conscious it’s down to me to either recognise that I’m equally responsible for this battle – or to regulate myself, calm my voice, and I try to clarify what is being said from both sides. We’re back to clarifying communication. It’s the difference between debate and just getting cross. Also, a real bugbear for me is when someone thinks I’m arguing with them when really all I’m trying to do is find out if I already agree with them! If you don’t communicate to me clearly (although I am prepared to admit that it might be obvious to everyone else and just my sidewaysbrain that’s not understanding thoroughly) I am going to ask questions. Because I respect your thinking process. And I want to understand what you’re trying to tell me. Not necessarily because I think you’re a doofus. Doofus! Arguments and debate are useful, and we get the most out of them when we don’t start off with inflexible stances. It’s about sharing and developing ideas, not pointscoring. If you want to move forward and learn then listen. Even if, after all that, I don’t agree, at least I have a better idea as to why it is a different opinion exists. A mutual respect. Which opens up negotiations.... 6 | LATEST 7

irst and foremost, bartending is exciting because of how multifaceted it is, no two days are the same. On any given night, the bearded chap you see mixing your drinks may be an entertainer, a single serving best friend or even a pseudo therapist. However, in a world where we are taking drinks a little more seriously, the most exciting for aspect of work for career barkeeps is one that may be less obvious to those on the other side of the bar. It comes from being a part of a trade that has a rich history and for that matter a rich future. This is where the concept of third wave bartending comes in, a term that I believe deserves some explaining.
“ Refined, thoughtful and quality drinks are now the rage ” In the industry’s first wave it was uncomplicated, the states hadn’t experienced prohibition and the perfect drink usually consisted of only three ingredients. Some of the most innocently cherished cocktails were developed: the Negroni, Martini and the Manhattan. Next came the flashy decadence of adolescence, second wave bartending. A period solidified in the ‘80s and ‘90s where cocktail names were inexplicably overly sexualised, the delightfully titled Slippery Nipple and Sex On The Beach being examples. Finally, the third wave, the here and now, early adulthood. Our current on trade is characterised by taking all this history and experience and (excuse the pun) distilling it in to the best possible product. Luminous Pornstar Martinis are still my top seller but refined, thoughtful and quality drinks are now the rage. Overall spending on alcohol is down yes, but the market for premium brands is continuously expanding. This is what makes the job exciting, riding the third wave and looking for the fourth. So, next time you go out in Brighton, go armed with this knowledge and chat with your bartenders, we’re a delightful bunch. UNITED NATIONS ORCHESTRA Antoine Marguier, United Nations Orchestra conductor, talks Mother Teresa, humanitarianism, sacrilegious Elgar & more with Joe Fuller, ahead of their UK debut at Brighton Dome Concert Hall
I
have read that you created the United Nations Orchestra with Martine Coppens in 2011, could you tell us more about the project please? I had this idea following a series of encounters I made over the years. It so happened that when I was a young clarinet player I had an opportunity to travel to India with the Orchestre français des Jeunes and to meet Mother Teresa in person. This meeting made a deep impression on me, and I thought that if I could do good with music, I should. So far, in 6 years, the UN Orchestra raised 200.000 Euros for charity (without financial support at all). Then, living in Geneva for over twenty years, I got to know several very talented musicians who engaged in highlevel studies in music but opted for other professions – often within the International Geneva – later in life. These musicians, members of UN agencies staffs, as well as NGO’s, CERN, Embassies (International Geneva is a real city in the city) are extraordinarily motivated. It was really interesting to get them to join the orchestra. You know, an amateur orchestra is not a lowgrade orchestra: it is
simply composed of people who love playing. Amateur musicians may be playing in public five times or so in a year but when they do, they give the very best of themselves. I also wanted to offer the UN a high quality cultural window and promote the UN peace, humanity, mindkind values, become messengers of peace through “Music for Peace” concerts (last October a 5 concerts tour in the largest cities of South Korea, including one on the DMZ).
“ Amateur
musicians give the very best of themselves ”
We promote young soloists who deserve international visibility and need the help they don’t have, beside top world artists we already could play with such Maxim Vengerov and Khatia Buniatishvili who were delighted by our collaborations. Amazing for a nonprofessional and our musicians. Do you think that the humanitarian aspect of your concerts helps them appeal to
a wider audience than traditional concerts? Absolutely! I think people are concerned by what we do concerning charity causes. They come to listen to us and help. The reason why, also, they accept to pay more money for a ticket. The University of Sussex has a picturesque campus and I see that the UNO members will be staying there. Do you utilise different forms of accommodation to save costs or are there other reasons for spurning more traditional accommodation? Of course, the costs are very important, since we, so far, receive no financial support yet. But, to me, it’s very important that my Orchestra stays together in this kind of trip. This is always a perfect opportunity for people to meet, create links, get to know each other, get friends, make a “family”, then have even more pleasure playing together, which of course provide more positive vibrations and a better sound. No Orchestra [is] better to conduct than a happy one. How were the six University of Sussex musicians selected to perform with the orchestra?
Mr. John Shaw was in charge of it. I asked for experienced people, able to perform with only one dress rehearsal before the concert, which will be the case. What can you tell us about the works you’ll be performing? It’s like two concerts in one. 1st: Mozart, then 2nd: English music, a total other world, then other atmosphere. This programme has mostly been suggested by John Shaw. Are any of the works particularly meaningful to you? Well, conducting Elgar Pomp and Circumstance in England, for a nonBritish conductor could seem as a sacrilege, but I will do my best. Is there anything else you’d like to mention to our readers regarding the concert? Why don’t you come and listen to us? This will be the opportunity to help poor children in this world who really need help. There are still SO many…. few months ago I wrote about Best of Brighton’s top twenty, a series of awards honouring the best the city has to offer when it comes to dining. I was delighted to see that for the most part that list reflected my own opinions on where the best food currently can be found in the city. Well now that food can currently be found in a very different way. Yes, the guys behind the awards have published a book featuring recipes by the chefs from those top twenty restaurants. I opened my copy of this new volume with a sense of trepidation. I love to cook, I cook well my friends tell me, but I am not a chef. I wondered if the recipes from some of my favourite chefs would be as tantalising on the page as they are on the plate. The answer was clear, they certainly are, truly seductive. If I start at the beginning it will be with chef Michael Bremner of 64 Degrees and his tuna with passionfruit and radish. Michael is well known from BBC TV’s Great British Menu, but he is also one of the star chefs on my own series International Chef Exchange which you can now see on Amazon Prime. This recipe looks great and also very achievable, lots of ingredients that I know but no specialist equipment required.

“ The recipes from some of my
favourite chefs are truly seductive ”
Chef Kanthi Thamma is a good friend and a kitchen star and I recently raved on these pages about his Keralan mussel moilee, little did I know that only a few weeks later I would have the secret to this fabulous dish with a recipe that for once I will follow to the very last detail, yes I like this dish that much! They are the tip of a culinary iceberg here, a whole range of delicious ideas, brilliantly edited by cocreator of the project Andy Lines and compiled into one scrummy volume that truly celebrates but also explains why Brighton and Hove has become so highly regarded as a culinary centre travelling to to enjoy. With gastro tourism actually knocking heritage tourism off its long held pedestal, our city has become a number one food destination and this book highlights the 20 restaurants that have helped put it there. The restaurants represented in the book are: 64 Degrees, Bincho Yakitori, The Chilli Pickle, The Little Fish Market, The Set, Cin Cin, Plateau, The Salt Room, Silo, Semolina, The Gingerman, Terre á Terre, Curry Leaf Café, Isaac At, The Ginger Pig, Fatto a Mano, The Urchin, The Coal Shed, Riddle and Fins and Fourth and Church. The book retails at £25 and is available from all the top 20 restaurants, City Books, Waterstones and the BAi360 gift shop. It's also available online at www.chefpublishing.com

A
s an artist and a creator it’s especially important to learn how to take joy in the accomplishments of others, otherwise the triumphs of your peers will become a crushing suffocation. But this lesson more than applies to wider life in general. I know it’s especially hard when the tentacles of that green eyed monster wrap themselves around you, but all those tentacles are really doing is massaging your ego. They slip in when you’re not looking and tie you in knots until you cant tell sincerity from spite. And that’s what being envious does. It turns your focus inwards to yourself and your emotions and how someone else’s success makes you feel. Being envious makes it about you. But it’s not about you, it's about the other person. It’s about their success, their joy, their dreams coming true. Why are they any less entitled to happiness than you? Envy usually comes when you feel cheated, when you’ve worked hard for something, when you’ve been visualising yourself pushing past that finish line in a blaze of glory and then you see someone else snatch the trophy instead. When that happens you are inundated with feelings of failure and selfloathing, but as a way of shielding yourself your emotions quickly bubble up and boil into bitterness and anger. By transforming themselves into aggression you hide your weakness from yourself and the world, and distract yourself by projecting your anger onto someone else.
“ Being envious makes it about you ” But you can sidestep all this messiness. All you have to do is be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like you would treat your friend in that situation. Tell yourself that it’s ok not to succeed every time, remind yourself that you can always try again, comfort yourself with love and support and reassurance. Don’t fall prey to the mindlessness of angry resentment, lift yourself above it all. You’re better than that. Being jealous only hinders yourself. It clogs your creative juices with anxiety. Jealousy is only a symptom of comparing yourself to others. Stop comparing, and you'll be able to start celebrating. If you’re a creative type be happy for all the new art being brought into the world. Rejoice at the limitless creativity of humanity! Look at all the beautiful things we create and be grateful that you are a part of that legacy, simply by being born human. And don't worry about other people doing what you were planning on doing because no one can do what you can do, because no one can tell your specific stories or paint pictures from your unique angle! Only you are you, and only you can create your art, and that's both terrifying and reassuring. If in doubt, remember this: don’t be envious, be enthusiastic. 10 | LATEST 7
n many ways I am far from your average gay man. I do not go to the gym for a start and I seldom go to clubs and dance to impenetrable club sounds, they leave me absolutely cold. And as I have said on many occasions I am unlikely to be categorised by any of the standard gay tribes. But in one respect I do confirm and I am unashamed to say that I love musical theatre, or at least some musical theatre. If you read my regular stage column here in Latest 7 you will have noticed that I am a fan of most forms of theatre but I really dislike so many of the new breed of juke box musicals. What I like is a good strong book (the story for those not in the inner circle), great tunes and lyrics that have content, that progress the narrative and earned their place as a part of the whole. Last week I was introduced to a show that had passed me by: Bare, a rock opera. Well my memories of rock operas go back to The Who and Tommy which in hindsight is a far better work than I once thought. Bare however is a far stronger piece of work that has so far only reached a very small audience both here in in its homeland the USA. On the show I had the director of a new production of this work, Conor Baum who works with Brief Hiatus. He brought with him two of the cast of this new production, Jamie and Nathan, and they sang a number from the show live in the studio. It was one of those spine tingling moments, not just for me but for the whole Latest team who happened to be around when they performed. I loved having them there and I rushed home to download the entire soundtrack.
“ A show that had passed me by: Bare, a rock opera ” I am pleased to say that musically it is pretty impressive, through sung (ask a musical fan) and with a story that is emotionally charged. It is very much a rock piece with a hefty rock score underpinning the work but with some very good ballads to balance. Needless to say I am now on the edge of my seat looking forward to going along to see the show when it opens next month at One Church in Brighton. And if you want a taster then go to our website and our YouTube channel to get a preview and find out a little more about this company and their ambitious project. I am confident that they will more than deliver. STAGE > One Man, Two Guvnors comes to Eastbourne Theatres
I
t was the West End hit that shot James Corden to international fame. One Man, Two Guvnors is based on the classic Italian comedy The Servant Of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, and adapted by prizewinning playwright Richard Bean, with original songs and music by Grant Olding. Now there is a new production being staged by Eastbourne Theatres in association with Talking Scarlet. The play will be performed by a cast of actor musicians, a format that is increasingly being seen on British stages – and to great effect. But in One Man, Two Guvnors the challenge is massively increased by the sheer physicality required to

deliver this hilarious comedy. The eleven strong cast are now ready for Eastbourne’s summer’s musical comedy. Directed and cast by
“ Sheer physicality required to deliver this hilarious comedy ”
Chris Jordan he says of his assembled troupe: “I am really pleased that we have managed to secure such a talented cast for this musical comedy. It’s packed with big characters and there are some fabulous parts for these actors.” Matt Devitt plays the
gloriously named Harry Dangle: Matt has an impressive biography which includes being nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance of Cookie, the role he created in the original Olivier Award winning West End production of Return to the Forbidden Planet. Aidan O’Neill takes the part of the eponymous Francis, this is a dream part for the talented actor who is sure to make his mark on the role that pushed James Corden’s star into the stratosphere. The first of the two Guvnors Rachel Crabbe, the twin sister of gangster Roscoe Crabbe who disguises herself as her mobster brother and employs Francis, is played by Ruth Westerley. Ruth has recently starred in the acclaimed multi award winning musical Once performing in both the Dublin and Seoul productions. The second Guvnor Stanley Stubbers, the boyfriend of Rachel who has actually murdered Roscoe so must at all costs be kept apart from Rachel, will be played by Dylan Turner. Dylan’s West End theatre credits include Beautiful (Aldwych Theatre), Rock of Ages (Shaftesbury and Garrick Theatre), Chariots of Fire (Gielgud Theatre), High School Musical (Hammersmith Odeon), Grease (Victoria
Palace), Mamma Mia (Prince Edward). Hugely talented Trevor Michael Georges, who celebrates 41 years in the industry takes the part of Lloyd Boateng. Trevor has worked on some of the most prestigious stages in the world including Glyndebourne, Apollo Victoria Theatre, Victoria Palace, Stand, Royal Court, Royal Opera House and the Old Vic to name but a handful. His career encompasses acting, opera, music, musicals and in addition to stage work he has many TV and film appearances. Jessica Warbeck makes her Eastbourne debut, Jessica performed at Shakespeare’s Globe in Othello and recently this year toured in Oliver in the part of Nancy. In One Man she takes the part of bookkeeper who steals Francis’s heart. Have you taken all that in? Probably not and that twisting plot is what makes this modern classic such a great night out. One Man, Two Guvnors, Devonshire Park Theatre Eastbourne, Thursday 29 June until Saturday 22 July with nightly performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 7.45pm and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets priced from £19, to book call the box office now on 01323 412000 or online eastbournetheatres.co.uk

SATURDAY 1 Melvyn Bragg: The Box That Changed The World BBC2, 9pm Sixty years ago the entire nation sat around a television set – whether it was their own or the neighbours – for the coronation of Elizabeth II and was unified in its viewing. Melvyn Bragg is joined by guests to discuss the incredible impact television has had since that moment.

It’s a difficult job for judges will.i.am, Pixie Lott and Danny Jones – but these kids do sound sensational.
