pera is an expansive art form like no other. It varies so dramatically that I think some are put off if they get a certain experience one time, and then assume that all opera is similar. A case in point are two of the operas I've seen at Glyndebourne over the last few weeks, thanks to their Under 30s’ £30 tickets. Brett Dean's Hamlet was a thrill ride, with the wild modern music featuring thunderous percussion and glorious cacophonies, along with bold singing lines that are more avantgarde than croonerish. This was what I call a more theatrical opera, with a gripping plot brought to life by a memorable Hamlet in Allan Clayton, and a crazed Ophelia in Barbara Hannigan, who also had a stunning, rounded, ethereal soprano tone. Hamlet also featured the most striking scene change I've ever seen, when the whole ceiling descended to show Hamlet and Horatio amidst a desolate funereal scene. It's the marriage of different forms (music, staging, lighting, choreography, acting, singing and also just sheer spectacle) which makes opera so distinctly moving and memorable. One person might enjoy the music and singing more, while another gets swept away by the costumes and the story. Hipermestra was certainly different: what I call a more old fashioned opera with a tale of fidelity and love. Those who are keen on a more traditional story might have preferred Hipermestra, as well as those fond of more accessible music or a good romantic aria. Regardless of one's musical predilections however, the staging was again fantastic, and the singing quality always resoundingly beautiful. If you'd like to try an opera but aren't sure where to start then email me at editorial@thelatest.co.uk and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction. It's a journey well worth taking.

e live in a world that is defined by technology. But nowadays we can't adjust before something new comes along. So instead of trying to engage with the future, we just let the future happen to us. We think the future is a foreign land dictated by the elite few who are paving the way technologically, economically and culturally. But that is wrong. The future is dictated by us, continually shaped by the actions each of us takes on a day to day basis. So how do we go about making sure future technologies will have a positive impact on the world? Most of us are not CEOs of technology developing companies, nor do we have any shareholder influence over the kinds of technologies these companies are creating. Or do we? Surely the consumer is the largest shareholder of all? Without the consumer there is no business. The economic template for all business is that the consumer sets the agenda, and the provider meets them. So why is it then that we are much closer to a reality where the consumer is meeting the agenda of the provider? Why are there queues of people outside the Apple store on the day they release their phone regardless of whether they have answered the demands of the consumer? Because we do not realise that it is us who hold the power. If we refused to show up on the day of release Apple would be forced to create a phone that truly does meet consumer desire (rather than adding another glass screen when the majority of their complaints were about the breakageprone glass screen they already had.)
“ The consumer sets the agenda, and the provider meets them ” The future is a never ending reflection of the adage 'necessity is the mother of invention’. All we need to do is prioritise our necessities. If we want a future world that is more geared to a ecologically sustainable future for planet earth then we must prioritise environmental sciences, and suddenly the world becomes more environmentally friendly. Or if we want a future world where robots have taken over all manual labour then we must prioritise a shift in our economic structure to allow for this, rather than desperately holding onto menial labour jobs we take no satisfaction in simply because our economic system demands that we generate income from somewhere. We cannot afford to disconnect from the world of tomorrow, otherwise the reins of the future will slip out of our hands and we will be overwhelmed. 4 | LATEST 7

ook left. Yes left on the page, that’s my new colleague and I hope friend Louis Michael. My word he’s a bright spark. In comparison to me he is no age whatsoever but in terms of speaking his mind he has already proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. In addition to which he is an elegant and eloquent writer. I’m proud to share this space with him. Anyway, right now I am off to film an episode of AK Soufflé with him. Who knows what will come of it, but whatever that is I am sure that it will be fascinating. I’ll let you know how it went after we come out of the studio. Well there we have it, Louis is certainly a force to be reckoned with. I only wish that at 20 I had had the same clarity of thought as he displays. Okay, I was no dunderhead, but my focus was on my work and studies as a designer. Maybe they were easier, simpler times, after all, the current state of world affairs does seem particularly challenging and especially to a young person with their whole future ahead of them.
“ The current state of world affairs
does seem particularly challenging ” Most interestingly I was fascinated to talk with him about the impact on his life of becoming a ‘celebrity’, indeed the whole concept of celebrity. How obsessed is the world with creating these popular figures, but how little we consider the effect that becoming well known in a massively ever expanding public arena, TV, magazines, social media has. Louis has to deal with being spotted on a day to day basis. To a lesser extent so do I, and I am always delighted to pause and say hello to people who have seen me in the magazine or on TV. Most people are simply charming, Louis agrees, and the few who are not I can easily dismiss, a policy that Louis adheres to too. Week on week as I make the Soufflé I am impressed by the vision of my younger guests, their forward thinking approach to making this world a better place, not just for the LGBT+ community but for humanity as a whole. There are of course people out there who do not care, do not make it their job to make life better and are happy to ride on the coat tails of the few who will invest their time in creating a better future. Hats off to young men and women who are, like Louis, prepared to stand up for a better world. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

SHIRLEY VALENTINE Willy Russell’s classic story of an escape from suburbia comes to Theatre Royal Brighton
W
hen Willy Russell’s heart warming comedy Shirley Valentine premiered on stage in 1986 it took the world by storm. Just 3 years later it was adapted into an Oscar nominated film. When it hit the big screen starring Pauline Collins, the bored, lonely, middle aged house wife was instantly taken into the hearts of all who saw her.
“ I was no longer Shirley the
neighbour, Shirley the middleaged mother, Shirley Bradshaw. I had become Shirley the Sensational, Shirley the Brave, Shirley Valentine ”
Now, on its 30th anniversary, Jodie Prenger stars in the first major revival of this national treasure which visits Theatre Royal Brighton for one week only from Monday 17th – Saturday 22nd July. If you are too young to remember the film or the play the first time round: Shirley is a Liverpool housewife. Her kids have left home and she makes chips and egg for her husband while talking to the wall. Where has her life disappeared to?
Out of the blue, her best friend offers her a trip to Greece for two weeks and she secretly packs her bags. She heads for the sun and starts to see the world and herself very differently. Jodie Prenger, who landed the role of Nancy in Cameron Mackintosh's revival production of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane after winning BBC 1's I'd Do Anything, will play Shirley. She also won the 2010 Whatsonstage Theatregoer’s Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Jodie has won the hearts of audiences at Theatre Royal Brighton every time she visits. You may have seen her starring as The Lady of The Lake in the Spamalot, in the title role of Calamity Jane or in Tell Me on a Sunday. If you haven’t seen her on stage yet, you are in for a treat. Willy Russell’s credits also include Educating Rita and Blood Brothers. If you are looking for a bit of escapism and a trip to Greece is beyond your budget, join Shirley on her adventure that will delight fans news and old. ERASURE Stalls tickets have already sold out for Erasure’s February 2018 Brighton show, and those left in the circle are going fast. That’s a lot of respect! Victoria Nangle speaks to Andy Bell about politics and chips Hi guys, how are you today? Very well thanks. It's impressive that you have been consistently been making successful music for over 30 years, and marvellous the way that you have influenced others. What is your secret to keeping a passion for music, or anything, for that amount of time? Music is in your blood, I have a great respect for fine singers. It is important to go off and do other things outside of the band, and Vince and I are very down to earth. How has 'pop music' changed in your opinion, and in which ways has it stayed the same? Pop has become rather like the vox pop sound bite and I think attention spans are being purposefully shortened to turn us into consuming robots. 'World Be Gone', your new album, sees you turn your attention to the world and recent political upheavals. Having toured in Russia and Ukraine, in the late 1990s, was there any glimpse of the troubling times to come while you were there? I think it’s very difficult to get a handle on somewhere when you only visit for very short periods of time and from a privileged perspective. It is always good to get to know the ground staff, so to speak, and see how much of a struggle their daily lives are. Power is always about controlling the masses and it happens at home too. If a particular group is seen as wielding too much influence it will be crushed. Where does your hope for the future of the global political landscape come from? From within and the love and generosity of most individuals.
Who would you most like to hear what you have to say in the album, and what would you like them to take away from it: politicians, international fans...? I think mainly young people as well as people from oppressive regimes, although its a pretty tall order. I just hate the idea of people having the wool pulled over their eyes. Which current chart musicians would you like to work with: writing for, performing with, producing, and why? Will.i.am seems like a clever chap. Vince is a huge fan of Ed Sheeran.
“ Pop has
become rather like the vox pop sound bite ”
The way you admire other artists by covering their tracks, and allowing them to cover yours is beautifully collaborative. If you could have permission to cover any track written by someone else, what would it be? Vince: Rocket Man by Elton John Andy: The Man With The Child In His Eyes by Kate Bush And if you could have any artist cover one of your tracks who would you choose, which track, and why? Siren Song, performed by Adele. We're really looking forward to having you back in Brighton. What are your strongest associations and memories of being in Brighton? Amazing crowds and fish & chips. Erasure, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Monday 19 February 2018, 7pm, £62.50/£42.50

righton and Hove, is it becoming the culinary capital of the South East? In the last few months the already acclaimed gastronomic scene has been added to by the opening Great British Menu winner of Matt Gillan’s Pike & Pine, Masterchef the professionals winner Steven Edwards and his new venue Etch, Amanda Menahem’s Pascere with ex colleague of Mr Gillan at Michelin starred The Pass: Johnny Stanford, and Michael Bremner, Great British Menu finalist and holder of almost innumerable awards about to open his new family orientated restaurant Murmur down on the city’s lower promenade… well clearly the answer has to be yes, all of these joining a starry firmament of local independent restaurants that are already close to our food loving hearts, too many to mention here. At the same time Brighton’s hotel scene is raising its game, a game kicked off by Drakes who raised the bar for both accommodation and dining all those years ago. Then came Hotel du Vin, a jewel in our hospitality crown and a firm local favourite. For those with a eye for the modern myHotel Brighton joined the throng with an ultra cool look and a stunning cocktail bar.

Coggings & Co
“ Top end accommodation needs to be coupled with a great food offer ” More recently Harbour Hotels launched a new top end hotel on Kings Road with an excellent bar and The Jetty restaurant serving tip top fish and seafood, and a stunning subterranean spa with the promise of a rooftop pool to come. It seems that top end accommodation these days needs to be coupled with a great food offer: the launch event of the recent refurbishment of what once was Seattle Hotel at Brighton Marina by the Malmaison group featured an impressive show and a spread for example. Lavish food and drink was served to the city’s great and good (and dare I say it not so good, a group in which I would clearly classify myself). It was certainly a night to remember. Malmaison Brighton has gone for an amazingly luxurious look, the kind that takes your breath away. In reformatting the entire space they have dispensed with the crazily huge corridor that was there and created a series of intimate spaces and larger rooms that offer a variety of uses, from dinners to meetings and parties of many sizes. Add to this the decked terraces that run along the seafacing side of the hotel, they really do have some excellent views and the promise of all day sun. I cannot wait to go back to dine and report back on just how well they do that, but for now I say that the prospects are good. Culinary capital? Yep, I reckon we’re there!
Coggings & Co is all about great burgers, made with local ingredients sourced with care, prepared with skill and served with warmth. SOPHIE COOK > Why being transgender was irrelevant in my GE2017 campaign
A
s I stood on stage, a room full of expectant people looking up at me I was totally focused on the next words that I would hear. "Sophie Rose Cook, Labour Party, 20,882." In the space of five short weeks we'd achieved the seemingly impossible, taking a previously safe Tory seat and making it a marginal, increasing the Labour vote by 114% with one of the biggest swings in the country at 19.8%. At the start of the general election campaign no one gave the Labour Party a chance, both nationally and here in East Worthing & Shoreham. The constituency had always been blue and the Tory incumbent, Tim Loughton, had been the MP for 20 years. He felt safe and secure that no one could ever challenge him, and I'm sure that the selection of a little known transgender TV presenter as the Labour candidate only added to the feeling that he would increase his 15,000 majority. My selection caused a few waves, I was told that 'this isn't Brighton' and that the people of the constituency wouldn't warm to a transgender candidate. The press gave my campaign some coverage and despite being one of nine transgender candidates I was the one that got the most attention due to my profile from working in football and TV. "Labour candidate could become first transgender MP" said one headline whilst another mentioned the fight for LGBT rights, "Trans activist is fighting to oust antiLGBT Conservative politician."
Being transgender and in the public eye I was already used to abuse, both online and in the real world. I'd been trolled by various groups including receiving death threats on Twitter and as I stepped into the political arena I was bracing myself for a renewed onslaught of hatred. But then something unexpected happened. Instead of the abuse I was greeted with love and support, sure there were still a few transphobic remarks online but nothing like I'd experienced previously. I'd heard first hand accounts of trans people moving out of the constituency because of abuse and yet, when I started to talk to people, they responded with warmth and openness. My gender identity that had hit the headlines around the world seemed to mean nothing to the constituents that I met, it was never mentioned on the doorsteps, the street stalls or the hustings. The only people that made it an issue were the press, not the voters. They listened to the policies, my ideas, passion and belief and they embraced me.
“ Being transgender and in the public eye I was already used to abuse ” On June 8 nearly 21,000 of them chose to put their mark next to my name on the ballot paper. They weren't voting for a trans woman, they were voting for Sophie Cook, they were voting for the Labour Party. They saw beyond the headlines and the things that made us different and in their way struck a massive blow for trans equality. We now have the most diverse parliament ever with 45 LGB MPs, I missed out on adding a T to that by 5000 votes. We need transgender politicians, after all everyone in society needs to feel represented. But the main reason why I believe that the time is right for a trans MP has nothing to do with equality or diversity, it's down to the constituents who put their faith in me to represent them, regardless of my gender identity. Since the election I've spoken to hundreds of people who said that I've given them hope for the first time. That feeling goes both ways, they saw that there is more that unites us than separates us, they saw a person rather than a label, and they too gave me hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Head to Brunswick Square on Sunday 9 July and enjoy the sixth year of the Brunswick Town Art Fair featuring over 50 artists in the gardens and an eclectic combo in the Regency Town House, where Pop Art meets the South Downs. Having spent many years cycling and walking on the South Downs, local photographer Finn Hopson now spends his time capturing the unique places, shapes, patterns and textures of the UK's newest national park. In contrast, fellow Brightonian Richard Denne uses Pop Art as a starting point to produce bold, graphic work that integrates his knowledge of traditional printmaking with digital technology – fusing them into magnificent prints and mixedmedia originals. STAGE > Harnessing the power of play to produce powerful learning experiences
R
oot Experience are a local arts charity who have been making interactive theatre in Brighton for nearly ten years. You might have met them (and some of their ‘interesting’ characters) in the North Laine with your children at the rather fabulous ‘Project: Oggbots’, where they blended interactive gameplay, with STEAM learning (assembling an alien ‘Oggbot’ from circuit boards, bulbs, and wires). Or perhaps you’re more familiar with the community projects they run using drama and improvisation to help people to find connection and express themselves. Your children might have encountered Root Experience at their school, or at one of the ‘Your Place’ performances of the Book Project at Brighton Festival: where a motley bunch of swashbucklers escaped from the library, sparking adventures in literacy. Led by Simon Magnus, Root Experience’s raison d’etre is to harness the power of play to produce powerful learning

experiences and to help people to connect, explore and understand both themselves and the community around them. Currently the team are hard at work on the Hidden Project: an ambitious communityled arts project, working with groups of local people who live with invisible conditions.
“ There will be
traditional hanging artwork but alongside that, expect the unusual ”
This challenging venture aims to explore the experiences of living in Brighton and Hove with a range of hidden disabilities, including (but not limited to) autism, OCD, MS and ME. The participants, supported by Simon and the Root Experience team (which
includes the renowned sound designer, Dougie Evans, the incredible Emma Chapman at studio 360, and the ingenious Helen Goddard doing the physical set design), are showcasing their work in a thoughtprovoking, interactive exhibition, The Hubbub at Brighton Dome this weekend. There will be traditional hanging artwork, but alongside that, expect the unusual. The Hubbub will include sound installations; a talking garden (with hosted conversations and provocations); a quiet, calm, womblike den; video work; storyboarding and interactive sculpture. Designed to help the wider community in Brighton and Hove to better understand the experience of living with a hidden disability, everyone is welcome at The Hubbub. The project is supported by the Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund and The Betty Messenger Foundation. If you or your organisation would like to get involved, or to contribute to the Invisible Disability Advocacy Toolkit, which will be formed within The Hubbub, please contact Root Experience’s Artistic Director, Simon Magnus at simon@rootexperience.org The Hubbub, Founders Room, Brighton Dome, 89 July, 12pm4pm, Free

n her first Brighton show for three years, the Swedish dark disco queen gave a fearless performance dealing with dark, personal subjects, from sex and sexuality to bullying and broken hearts sung over a rocky, EDM throb. Dressed in gold hot pants and a transparent white top, Tove twisted and turned through a 90 minute set that whipped the devoted crowd to a frenzy culminating in a teasing 'Talking Body' where she slowly removed her top to ecstatic cheers. A solo 'Imaginary Friend' showcased her fine musicianship and she danced with the euphoric crowd during the final, anthemic encore, 'Habits'. Concorde 2, 26 June 2017

s well as being a 24/7 TV channel in the heart of Brighton serving the communities of Brighton, Hove & Worthing, we offer television training in a range of courses. Whatever your age or level of skill, if you have a passion for presenting, production, being in front of or behind the camera, there are courses that will suit and give you a range of skills in television. For many years there has been a mystique about working in TV, probably to do with the magic that is the green screen. Presenters and guests sit or stand in front of a green screen, and with a magic machine, you can show the participants in any visual setting, be it in front of Brighton Pier, The Eiffel Tower or The Great Pyramids. All you need is the knowhow, and of course the magic machine, which at Latest TV is our trusty tricaster system. Many students have come to our TV studio to find out how we

produce the news, current affairs and a range of programmes such as AK Souffle or Joe Fuller's informative What's On show, Brighton Lights, all positioned in front of a green screen. Our gallery team show them how the tricaster works, how the autocue works, how you can import scripts and videos and create a show that is hopefully fun, informative and dynamic all at the same time. With the help of some whizzy motion graphics, produced by our inhouse team of geniuses we take the mystery away and provide you with a fun day or week of learning. Our courses are tailored to what you require. Individuals can join our news and sports team "on the job" or we can tailor courses for groups of any size.
