any artists attempt new things live or try to create a transcendent, hypnotic mood, but few are as successful and overwhelmingly acclaimed as Sunn O))). If you stream Aghartha from their 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions you can get an idea of what to expect, but make sure you listen loud for the proper experience. Sunn O))) strike me as a structural end point of metal, wherein distortion, guitars, bass and synth coalesce into a gloriously ominous, beautiful whole. Vocals spring up in Aghartha but are arguably more a contemplative accompaniment to the peaceful cacophony than a core part of the music. Some find it odd to talk about such ostensibly gloomy music in terms of peace, but listened to in a certain way it can actually be quite calming. In a recent Guardian interview (bit.ly/2r6NXT9), synth player Tos Nieuwenhuizen mentions that in songs where he's not playing he sometimes “lies down behind the amps on a nice wooden floor with a pillow behind my neck. I feel the healing properties: good for headaches, sore backs.” Guitarist Stephen O'Malley meanwhile explains that their music “isn’t a violent thing. It’s powerful, but our intention is not to be destructive. It’s nourishment.” I saw them at Coalition in 2012 and it indeed felt like a meditative experience that's moving if you give yourself up to it. Thankfully, smoke machines and quadrophonic sound aided the sense of immersion, and we can presumably expect a similar fug at Concorde 2 to get lost in. Many artists also attempt to defy categorisation to try and stand out, but few could straddle fans ranging from those with an interest in black metal, or drone music, or even minimal classical. Tickets are still available at the time of writing and this is truly a great opportunity to catch a unique concert.

hether I was born with it, or pieced it together like Lego blocks from different defining experiences at a young age, I am blessed to have a positive disposition. The reason I say blessed is in part because I practice gratitude in my every day life and in part to recognise that in this day and age it seems that more often than not that sunny side up mentalities are over real easy. But despite the fact that it's second nature to me, that doesn’t mean I keep smiling without thinking. Since leaving the protective chrysalis of childhood I’ve wondered more and more often about the state of the world, the consignment to the relentless trudge of the miserable everyday. So many people, feeling trapped by their circumstance, give in to hopelessness and accept undeserved punishments, like early mornings chained to a desk of endless paperwork. For many, somewhere along the way the sunlight leaked out of their world. But its my belief that sometimes we offload the blame on circumstance as a way of directing the finger of blame away from ourselves. Because for many cases it’s the state of mind that’s the issue.

“ Sunny side up mentalities are over real easy ” Positivity starts at home. We can pluck positivity from outside ourselves, but eventually it will always dissipate. For the real genuine good feelings we all want, it has to take root within us. To do that, we need to nurture it, and the way to nurture positivity is to fill your body with love. How do you do that? By loving yourself. And no, loving yourself isn’t arrogant. Arrogance is thinking you’re better than everyone else. Love yourself! Tell yourself you’re worthy of love, that you’re worthy of your own love! Treat yourself like you’d treat your best friend. Give yourself a break. And eventually as the bruises you gave yourself begin to heal, and aren’t replaced by new ones, you’ll begin to see that the world isn’t so bad. This, hand in hand with a grateful mindset, the small change in belief that nothing should be taken for granted, everything is a blessing, will transform this cautious optimism and allow it to blossom into a confident contentment. It goes without saying that those with neurological imbalances and mental health issues are on a different journey, but I sincerely hope that you too can find a pearl of wisdom somewhere in my words to alleviate some of your burden. 4 | LATEST 7

T

he 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexual acts is seeing a flurry of media activity. You cannot turn on your TV without encountering some famous gay celebrities recounting their experiences, their musical loves and even their favourite gay buildings! Yes gay buildings, who would have ever thought it – but there they all are, the stately homos of England as the wonderful Quentin Crisp might have said had he still been with us standing in front of iconic building – that status being achieved not by the architecture or the structure but by what had happened there. I was lucky enough to meet Quentin many times when I was an art student in Chelsea. He was by that time no longer modeling but he did come in to give some of his famous talks and I chatted to him over a cup of tea in the canteen and once went to his infamously dusty and very small flat, for tea I hasten to add and nothing more. He was the most extraordinary character and a great ambassador for those gay men who had not been swept along by the new macho macho man image that was at the time being adopted by a new generation of homosexual.

“ I was lucky enough to meet Quentin Crisp many times ” Quentin made it easier for those of us who enjoyed being flamboyant and felt silly in Levis, plaid shirts and Timberland boots all topped off with a yardbrush moustache. Well to be honest at that time I couldn’t have grown a moustache at all and as such that lumberjack look was beyond my grasp. I went the other way and dressed in vibrant colours, favouring the best of the new designers, Katherine Hamnet, Body Map, Willy Smith and a smattering of the things I could afford from World’s End, which I recall were pitate socks. I was lucky, as a designer I knew a lot people in the rag trade and there were often warehouse sales of the previous season’s clothes, especially the more outrageous ones that simply had been too much for the mass market – but not for me. Dressing up was fun, and still is and I was delighted to go along to Brighton Museum to engage in a new project, Wear It Out, which will create an archive of gay fashion that will be curated over the next year. Look out for my interview with the man behind it, Martin Pel, on my TV show in a few weeks’ time. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

JANE EYRE Theatre at its most imaginative

F

ollowing a critically acclaimed season at the National Theatre, Jane Eyre will be coming to Theatre Royal Brighton from 24th to 29th July. This innovative reimagining of Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece is a collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic and is directed by Sally Cookson. The classic story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart.

“ 2017 marks the 170th anniversary of the first publication of Jane Eyre ” Director Sally Cookson said, “Adapting a novel for the stage is a challenging prospect – especially when that novel is cited as many people’s favourite of all time. It is always daunting when you’re working on a story which everyone knows so well, because you want to surprise and maybe challenge people’s expectations, without losing any of the things which make them like the story in the first place”. Nadia Clifford plays Jane Eyre with Tim Delap as Rochester. 2017 marks the 170th anniversary of the first publication of Jane Eyre – a significant time to be touring Charlotte Brontë’s classic and much loved story. Mon 24 – Sat 29 July | Eves 7.15pm | Thu & Sat mats 2pm Theatre Royal Brighton, 0844 871 7650*, atgtickets.com/brighton* *Booking fees apply. SIMON AMSTELL

Hit writer, director, and filmmaker – Simon Amstell is a busy man and is about to embark upon a new stand up tour. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about what he’s been up to. Hi Simon, how are you today? I’m good, how are you? Good too, thanks. Thank you for including Brighton in your tour. Are you looking forward to visiting the city, or have any strong memories of the place? My main memory of Brighton is getting on the train there every fortnight for therapy sessions, because I made the strange choice of finding a therapist who lived in Brighton [when I didn’t]. Obviously you hope for the best for anything you make, but was the great success of Carnage something you were prepared for? I was really worried people would hate it so we made it as funny as possible. Once I saw people liked it, it was quite a relief. How did you find being in control and responsible to such an extent (writing and

directing a feature length) for an entire film, in contrast to Grandma’s House? In a way, it was easier in that it wasn’t as personal… with Grandma’s House I was playing myself, expressing every personal insecurity I had at the time. If people hadn’t liked that, it would mean that they didn’t like me and I thought I would have to leave the country.

“ Saying the most

embarrassing, shameful things I feel about myself out loud ” It has been reported that you will write and direct ‘Benjamin’ as your second film. How involved are you planning in being involved all

of the aspects of the production casting, producing, editing, soundtrack etc – and do you find it easy to delegate when you are shaping something from its start? I’m involved in every detail but I’m working with people I love and trust, so tell them they have to be as creative and experimental as they can. Could you describe ‘Benjamin’ for us in a trailer – teasing and giving a glimpse of what’s to come, with maybe a tagline? I think I shouldn’t say too much about ‘Benjamin’ now as it’s going to be a while before anyone sees it and we haven’t made it yet. Will you be writing ‘What is This?’ at the same time as ‘Benjamin’ is in production? Most of the show is ready. I have a few more warm ups. All the stories are there, I’m just not sure which order they should go in.

Do you have a writing method for stand up – and does it dovetail well with other workloads drawing on you? I get on stage in front of 100 people and keep talking until something funny happens. Then that bit goes into the next show and I keep doing that until I feel funny enough to go on tour. What brings you back to a live audience? I suppose, for me it’s that I get to reveal who I am on stage. By saying the most embarrassing, shameful things I feel about myself out loud, I feel less confused and alone… when the audience laughs, I feel like they’re saying, ‘you’re okay, we feel that too’… there’s a feeling of connection in that moment. That’s what I’m in it for. Simon Amstell – What Is This?, Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Sunday 19 November 2017, 8pm, £24

I

t looks like street food is here to stay and who amongst can deny that they have been seduced by the smell of delicious foods that are cropping up in our streets and markets. It comes as no surprise then that The British Street Food Awards, a reflection of the melting pot of culinary influences that makes the UK’s food scene so vibrant and diverse, is the toughest street food competition in the world. This year the South East heat comes as a live cookout on Brighton Beach with the national final judged by the general public and Michelinstarred chefs. The British winners will then head off to Berlin to represent the UK against the best of Europe. On 30th July, the 15 best traders from London and the South will be cooking up their signature dishes near to the Brighton’s Palace Pier – with an amazing day of food programming on the Big Screen to enjoy. With themed dishes to match the films – including Willy Wonka, Ratatouille and Chef. The people of Brighton can vote for two traders to go through to the finals, in Manchester, and – potentially – onto the finals of the inaugural European Street Food Awards. The Big Screen is the largest event of its kind in Europe. It features allweather seating for hundreds and a capacity of 3000 at any one time. Entry is just £5 and includes two movies, full use of the venue and a huge array of beach treats and entertainment.

Señor Buddha is a modern tapas bar located at Preston Circus, offering an ever changing tapas menu based around Spanish and East Asian cuisine. With just 24 seats, this small tapas bar is always busy so booking is recommended. 9 Preston Road, Brighton, BN1 4QE | www.senorbuddha.co.uk 01273 567832 | bookings@senorbuddha.co.uk

Coggings & Co

“ With themed dishes to match the films – including Willy Wonka ” “Street food is taking over” says Richard Johnson, founder of the BSFAs. “It’s interesting that in the midst of troubled times, we are choosing to eat in different ways. We just don’t want that fixed startermain coursedessert menu any more. We want a bit of this and a bit of that – flirty, lowcommitment dining.” The endofseason bash comes at an exciting time for British Street Food. And, in an effort to futureproof the street food revolution, the BSF team are about to launch the European Street Food app, which will showcase the best street food on the continent. With live GPS maps showing who’s trading where and when, it will also continue the latest news stories, and allow punters to vote for their winners at the European Street Food Awards. “The next step is to form a European team to take on the Americans” says Johnson. “Take a container ship to New York, full of our very best traders, and compete on the streets of Manhattan. Then it’s the Far East. Although not sure how well we’d do on a floating market. This way of eating is all about coming together and sharing food – in a world like ours, that’s a positive message right now.” Richard Johnson, 07976603098, richard@britishstreetfood.co.uk

> Pick’n’mix

A

bit of rain has started to appear in our blue skies just in time for the summer blockbusters to hit the cinema screens. Handy, that. So in the last couple of weeks I found myself not only enjoying the battle armour and mad skillz of Wonder Woman, but also guyliner of the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean installment – which my friends and I agreed was unfortunately a couple of screws short of an Ikea wardrobe. The thing that the Pirates trip did benefit from was the bounty known as ‘snacks’. More specifically, a minitrip before the cinema to a couple of the city’s colourful and sugarinfused shops known for their pick’n’mix.

“ My friend made a beeline for the licorice” I haven’t explored these treasure chests for a while. If I’m honest, I tend to stick to my trusty kids’ mixed box from the cinema – giving me a taste of salted popcorn, a tube of Smarties and a small bottle of water in case I get coughing fit from inhaling the previously mentioned treats. Strictly speaking, I thought I was only going into the shop to accompany my friend and coo at the treats in the same way I do when other friends go shoeshopping. My feet are pretty big for a lady, so it becomes more an exercise in admiring the craftsmanship and creativity than any exchange of cash for goods. So there I was wandering and making the suitable appreciative noises as my friend made a beeline for the licorice when my eye caught a chocolatecovered marshmallow with a twist of caramel inside. Here’s something new... Suffice to say, I quietly gathered up a paper bag and small trowel and started digging gems from sticky land. Here’s the best bit, that I hadn’t even thought of – when it came to consume these delights I hadn’t a clue what taste sensations were coming next! Apart from a couple of jelly beans, I’d shunned my more traditional favourites, choosing to plump instead for the sweets with the best crazy descriptions combining my favourite flavours. The most I could guess was a chocolatecovered ‘thing’ as my sticky hand came out of the bag in the cinema darkness. And it was liberating not to be confined by a menu sheet of paper that would usually accompany such a literal mixed bag. To just experience the taste without the preconception as to what it might be. So I’m choosing to take this as a metaphor as well as a delicious tip. Occasionally, throw away the treat map and just treat your senses to a few random delights. It certainly brightened up an average few hours with Johnny Depp. 10 | LATEST 7

> Summer’s hottest sunglasses

T

he sun is shining and we can finally put on our favourite accessory, the sunglasses! Not only does it help you see better in the sun, but you just look so much cooler with them on. To help illustrate this summer’s trendy eyewear, I’m using the help of two iconic spectacles wearers. The first one is John Lennon and of course his round shaped specs, which became part of his personal trademark. The circular designed sunglasses were a trend seen last summer and have continued to be popular this season as well. They suit the users who would like to go for a more retro look. They come in different sizes giving you either the ‘John Lennon’ look with small rounded shapes or you can go for the big 1970s inspired style making you look just as great. One of my favourites are the metal framed sunglasses with mirror lenses.

“ If you have a round face then

rectangular frames would suit you best ”

The second celebrity who has become wellknown for sticking to a certain type of glasses is Bono, therefore for those who like to wear colours are in luck. This summer’s shades can be found in a range of colour palettes and not just on the lenses, but on the frames as well. With my dark skin tone I find that the yellow tinted glasses suits me quite nicely, but blue and pink are also the right colours at the moment. Another stylish type are the ombré tinted shades and specs with flat lenses, rather than the traditionally curved ones. If you are more fashion forward then why not try sunglasses with decorations or floral details on. As we all have different head shapes, all sunglasses may not suit everyone therefore try different styles to find the frames that fits you the best. The recommendations are that one should use glasses that contrast with one’s face shape. For instance, if you have a round face shape then rectangular frames would suit you the best as it will balance your facial features by breaking off the roundness and elongating the face. Nonetheless, these are just recommendations as what is more important is that you wear what you feel most comfortable in. One important aspect to have in mind when buying sunglasses is to make sure that they have UV protection otherwise it is like sunbathing without sunscreen. So whatever look you are going for, a pair of sunnies will definitely rock your outfit. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Get the beers in. If you’re already looking forward to the next Bank Holiday a stroll around the Arundel Art Trail (with a pit stop or two) is a must. For the past three years, in collaboration with Arundel Brewery, Gallery Trail artists have been invited to provide artwork that could be used for beermats. Carol Harrison talks about the Small Faces & the music that defined Mod culture

W

riter, producer and one of its stars, Carol Harrison has created a hit musical, a story of sex and drugs and of course rock & roll. Carol explains, All Or Nothing is deeply personal, thanks to her longterm friendship with The Small Faces lead singer, the late Steve Marriott. “My aunt lived two streets away from his mum, my cousin knew him, and another cousin was in a band with him. He came round to our house when I was eight years old and he was just this amazing bundle of effervescence and talent. I had a bit of a crush on him. I loved the music, I loved their humour, and they were just Mod like me. You know what they say. Once a Mod, always a Mod. I also learned about their amazing rock n roll story and I thought it was an amazing tale. “I have never written a musical before. I like musicals but I didn’t want to write something that was just an excuse to play a song. I had to break down a lot of theatrical

conventions with a show but I have always broken rules. People said it should be fluffier or have someone from The X Factor playing Steve but my response was ‘over my dead body.” Carol has enjoyed an incredible career. She was a founding member of the renowned Half Moon Theatre, joined the Royal National Theatre Company to work with the legendary Arthur Miller in Death Of A Salesman, as well as productions at London’s Royal Court Theatre and the Liverpool Playhouse.

“ I had to break down a lot of theatrical conventions ”

Carol also enjoyed a strong TV career appearing in a range of programmes including Kavanagh QC, Perfect Scoundrels, and London’s Burning. Arguably her two best new smallscreen roles

were Louise Raymond who enjoyed a fiery relationship with soninlaw Grant Mitchell in EastEnders, and the incorrigible Gloria in Brushstrokes. “For me, producing is very new. There are so many things I have to do in the day. I have to bring in people, plan the tour, do rewrites of the script and marketing. There is then a moment where I have to say I am now an actor and it is quite tough to get to a point where I have to think let’s get into character and play Steve Marriott’s mum. “Having said that, this is very special because All Or Nothing is my vision. It is live. It is great when people say thank you, it makes me feel that I have really achieved something.” Mod or not, Itchycoo Park is not the place to be to catch All Or Nothing. he poops to conquer! Faeces the day! Top of the poops! Rather good as they are, this adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s book is worth more than its daft poo puns. Superior kids theatre company Les Petits bring well crafted animal puppets and jolly songs to the story of the hippo who wins a space race in a wooden rocket powered by jungle droppings. It’s a shame the talented cast all wear unnecessary microphones, making for shrill sound. But the space flight is exciting and atmospherically staged, as a model rocket farts past spinning stars in the deep dark of the unlit stage. Theatre Royal Brighton, 4 July 2017
