wrote about the diverse forms of opera a few weeks ago, and Ariadne auf Naxos (running until 27 July) is a perfect example, in fact it utilises wildly different styles within the same opera. The opera starts with a prologue, where a composer is distraught that his serious drama must be performed simultaneously with a vaudevillian sexual farce, at the request of the landed gentleman who is funding the whole shebang. Angela Brower's performance as the conductor was the highlight of the whole work, with fantastic charisma and fine acting creating a real empathy with the audience, as well as some fine melodies and arias to boot. The second part, known as 'The Opera', is the serious opera, interspersed with the farce, which is a jarring experience in some ways, but refreshing too. The music was overwhelmingly beautiful throughout, with fluid, blossoming woodwind from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and some of the most stunning harmonies I've ever heard in opera. You should check out the “Schläft sie” trio online for a sample of Strauss' mellifluous intertwining melodic lines, which was particularly well sung by soprano Hyesang Park in this production. Although Brower was the star for me, Lise Davidsen's Glyndebourne debut has proved the most popular, she had a fine, full, expressive voice that filled the auditorium, although I felt that her acting needed a little polish to really grip the viewer’s attention and tug at the heartstrings. Ariadne auf Naxos delves into the nature of art and the kinks of combining humour and tragedy. It’s also simply a joyous and fun opera, if a little muddled at times. If you want a thoughtprovoking work of art filled with stunning music, then I urge you to give this one a go.

y first ever job was as a Saturday girl at the local chemists. I was doing my Alevels at the time and wanted a bit of spending cash and independence, so joining the high flying world of deodorants and condoms seemed like the perfect opportunity. I was thrilled when I got the job and turned up nervously on my first Saturday. “What do you want to be called: Vicky, Vik, Victoria?” After a pause... “Victoria.” And there was a very good reason for that. Ever since another ‘Victoria’ joined my class in junior school I have been known to many as ‘Vicky’. I jumped at it. It was my rebellion. Ever since I’d heard the story that my Dad had wanted me to be called ‘Joanna’ but had caved to my mother’s ‘Victoria’ on the proviso it wasn’t ever shortened to ‘Vicky’. I once received a phone call from a friend at his house which resulted in him entering the living room with the stance of Lurch from The Munsters and shivering as he announced: “There’s somebody on the phone for... Vicky.” And then disappearing in disgust. My family never called me ‘Vicky’, for them it was always ‘Tor’ – the middle bit of ‘Victoria’ that my younger brother and cousins seized on in the world of infant pronunciations. As such, I’ve got a
“ Very much a square peg in a round hole aurally ” real tenderness and softness for ‘Tor’. It feels odd to hear anyone I’m not related to call me it. Equally it feels weird when a cousin or uncle who might meet some of my friends starts calling me ‘Vicky’. Very much a square peg in a round hole aurally. So upon starting my working life my name needed to sit well. I wanted to learn how to do my job properly, to pay attention when spoken to, to stay on my toes – so the best solution seemed to be to use the name I was called whenever I was in trouble. My full name. Victoria. It worked. And when I got my first office job I did the same thing. I was manning the calls through to a magazine office, as well as being chief oddjobber. My colleagues knew me as ‘Vicky’ pretty quickly, the name shifts as the formal nature of the relationship softens. But it meant that when I fielded calls for ‘Victoria’, I already knew they were people cold calling. Anyone I’d already had even one chat with already knew me as ‘Vicky’. Since then I’ve also acquired other names, chiefly focussing around my surname – Nangle. I was once asked if I’d made it up because of my interest in comedy. I haven’t. It’s my real name. And my Dad’s quite happy with that one. So you can call me by it anytime you like. 4 | LATEST 7
> The tale of nonalcoholic spirits
T
he term nonalcoholic spirit sounds like the kind of oxymoron that would make you double take. For example, if someone said to me I was about as useful as a nonalcoholic spirit I would feel like I was being insulted, as it turns out though, it might be a compliment. This is because the applications for an exciting, tasty and contemporary adult beverage with no ABV are not only numerous, but also fill a gap in the market we all knew was there but never really addressed. It would be impossible to explain this new variety of alcohol free libations without focusing on the world’s first and technically only nonalcoholic spirit, Seedlip. Named after the kind of basket
“ One gin out of the evening may take a back seat to Seedlip ” used for holding seeds, this new liquid is made adhering to 17th century apothecary methods once used to make elixirs. Essentially using the same distillation methods we use to make gin, the chosen botanicals are melded with water and evaporated to vapour infuse the flavours. Basically, Seedlip is a spirit and every other nonalcoholic drink so far isn’t because of one simple reason, it is distilled. Years ago, when alchemists would distil liquid, they would collect the vapor, and gather the “spirit” that came off the material. That’s where the word came from. So, in basic etymology this product still fulfils the prerequisite for being called a “spirit”. Whereas if you stick sugar, juice and preservatives together, it’s just an “adult soft drink” like the offensively sweet Shloer or those obscure vermouth imitations (ironically, most people mix these with alcohol). Now you may be thinking this is some flawed concept that only bartenders are ever going to try, but it is already being served in some of the best bars in Britain and the world. The American bar at The Savoy serves this in its house mocktail, and that’s serious. Not only that but the prize for winning the Seedlip cocktail contest is an ACRE OF LAND in Lincolnshire to grow your own botanicals. So, creator Ben Branson is doing pretty well for himself. With all this in mind, it looks as if nonalcoholic spirits are on the precipice of being the next big thing and its refreshing to see. I’m not going to say I’ll stop drinking gin, but one gin out of the evening may take a back seat to Seedlip. if only to spare my head in the morning. IF I WERE A RICH MAN Omid Djalili stars in a Fiddler on the Roof for our times at Chichester Festival Theatre
C
hichester Festival Theatre is particularly renowned for its summer musicals, which in recent years have included Gypsy, Guys and Dolls and Half A Sixpence, all of which went on to successful West End runs. This year’s offering is the Broadway classic Fiddler on the Roof, with a cast led by multi awardwinning comedian and actor Omid Djalili, and West End and TV star Tracy Ann Oberman. It’s a completely new staging by Chichester’s Artistic Director Daniel Evans, alongside an outstanding creative team that includes designer Lez Brotherston (Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake) and choreographer Alistair David (Show Boat). Set in 1905 in a small village in Imperial Russia, Fiddler on the Roof centres on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his wife, Golde, who are blessed with five witty and beautiful daughters. The matchmaker Yente, who believes any husband is better than no husband, is busy making sensible marriage plans for them all. But Tevye’s bold daughters have their own ideas about who to marry. And as change and new ideas roll in from the big cities, dissolving the old ways of life, the sisters are not alone in their lust for something new.
“ The Fiddler on the Roof that everyone knows and loves ” Packed with showstopping songs including If I Were A Rich Man, Tradition and Matchmaker, the original recordbreaking Broadway production won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. “One of the most amazing things about Fiddler on the Roof is that the dialogue matches the amazing songs, which is quite rare in a musical”, says Daniel Evans. “We’re really excited that we’ve been given permission to have new orchestrations and brand new choreography” (until now, all stagings have been based on the original dance sequences by Jerome Robbins). “So while this will be the Fiddler on the Roof that everyone knows and loves, we hope it will also feel fresh and pertinent to our times.”

Directed by Jeremy Herrin, who helmed the National Theatre hits This House and People, Places & Things, it’s another mustsee in Chichester this summer. ANDREW KAY AK Soufflé
> The generation technology gap
> God bless queer TV
T
G
he technological rift between my generation and my parents’ generation fascinates me. I would go so far as to say never before in history has there been such a considerable and gargantuan gulf between two generations. The industrial revolution of the victorian era comes a close second, but had nothing close to the impact on individual daily life that the recent strides in technology have created. The surge in technological developments in the last twenty years has revolutionised the world, and in doing so has erased the world that the baby boomer generation grew up in. Now anything that might trigger nostalgia in the midlife majority is labelled as retro, massively outdated and only good for throwbacks and blasts from the past. The 4059 age bracket might often find themselves in the strange position of being dated as ancient when kids realise with shock horror that “you were around before colour TVs!?”. Actually kids, those grown ups aren't as close to dinosaurs as you might think. They’re just the unfortunate victims of an unprecedented spike in technological growth that makes them
“ They’re victims of an unprecedented spike in technlogical growth ” seem like they’re centuries old rather than only decades. But what are the ramifications of this generational gap? One could argue that growing up in two such different worlds makes it harder for adults to relate to children. How can you engage with the youth when you don’t know what a meme is, you write texts like they’re letters, and you still think lol stands for lots of love it’s laugh out loud, dad, how many times do I have to tell you? Older adults are often left feeling frustrated as they try to find the key to unlocking this new technotopia: they don’t realise that it’s all touchscreen locks now. On the other end you have children who’ve become immunised to the fumbling technophobic oldies, toddlers who can work tablets better than adults, and a whole new world of social interaction that results in parents desperately trying to make themselves technologically literate in order to supervise their kids. It’s birthed a strange dynamic between the old and young that turns the previously accepted paradigm of obligatory elder superiority on its head. In this thefutureisnowworld why would you defer to the past? Wisdom, that’s why. Regardless of what world your elders grew up in, the fact of the matter is they grew up. They grew up, they survived, and they’ve accumulated a lifetime of wisdom to help you do exactly the same. Don’t forsake a helping hand just because it might not be fast at texting. od bless Auntie, by which I mean the Beeb, or should I be being more respectful? What I am getting at is the flurry of queer telly that is currently filling our screens. God bless Channel 4 too, who seem to be taking a bit of a break from the normal pap diet of fly on the wall, car crash programming that seems to be their stock in trade for the most part, if it were not for Countdown I might never tune in. The 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality was bound to create a lot of attention and it is great to see so much coverage being given to the subject and the issues that surround it. I was heartened also to see that London Pride was actually given coverage in the main news bulletins, although rather a lot of emphasis was put on the enormous risks involved and the huge turnout of police required to ensure safety. Still, it was there to be seen and not sidelined as it has been for so many years. I’m enjoying watching much of the TV programming and in particular the Channel 4 programme Epidemic: When Britain Fought Aids on the way the UK dealt with the rise of AIDS and HIV. Hats off to the then Minister for Health Norman Fowler who comes across very well in the programme which highlights the fact that the then Prime Minister, a certain Thatcher woman, could hardly bring herself to say the words gay or homosexual let alone acknowledge that the country was facing a massive crisis.
“ It was there to be seen and not sidelined as it has been for years ” Less convincing was the programme Britain’s Great Gay Buildings, informative in part but rather silly too, these were only great gay buildings by being the associated locations to major gay events, all except perhaps Heaven, that certainly seemed to ring true. Fifty Shades of Gay worked well and handing it over to Rupert Everett was an inspired idea, Everett is rather fearless in voicing his own views rather than spouting received information. I didn’t agree with everything he said or thinks but I admired his approach and his honesty. There’s plenty more to come with, one has to hope, a balance of fun and the inevitable sad stories. If anything these seasons will bring our world to the attention of the nongay world and perhaps one day we can see a world when being gay is not worth mentioning, where the word equality needs not be used and that we live in harmony side by side, not matter how we express our sexuality. OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF… Latest 7’s annual Kids Reviews are back
I
’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is my favourite feature of the entire year. It fills my heart with joy and hope when, having sent out a group of youngsters, I get to read their reviews of some of the city’s best places to dine. It strikes me as encouraging that in an age when busy parents so often rely on the convenience of refrigerator grazing, not always their fault I concede, these youngsters are excited to be eating out. It also cheers me that they are adventurous, they like spice, they embrace the unusual and of course, a few will be
thrilling at the opportunity to eat delicious icecream and tradition chips as sausage, they after all have their place in our incredible culinary heritage. Where else in the world do you find such all encompassing culinary opportunities. Our empire building past had many faults but bringing back to the UK so many global food influences is one of the benefits, in the same way that the peoples of the world from our imperial past add to the rich society that we are privileged to live in. Anyway, enough politics, let’s get on and hear what the kids have to report, as I say… “Out of the mouths of…”.
Boho Gelato Katja Kettles
T
his has always been my favourite ice cream parlour in Brighton and I know I am not alone as the queues are always long (tip: get there for 11.30am to avoid a big queue and choose from the best selection). They have a variety of different flavours, usually changed daily or every other day which include 5 sorbets and 19 ice creams. Katie and Aoife served me this time and they were really helpful and fun, I think I might have tried every flavour – they normally let customers try a few flavours before choosing which is really kind. To give you an idea of some of the flavours they had... Chocolate Raspberry, Jam Doughnut, Blueberry Muffin, Salt Caramel, Marmalade on Toast, White Chocolate Cream, Cookies and Cream, Armadillo (Dime bar!!) and some for the adults only like Howling Wolf Black Dove Cocktail. You can have them in tubs, cones or chocolate cones (cones are vegan). They also have take home freezer tubs. I chose a large chocolate cone with 3 scoops of sorbet: Speculous, Mango Passionfruit & Pineapple, Watermelon. They were all delicious but my favourite was the Mango one. It was huge. I think my eyes were bigger than my appetite. If I were to rate Boho Gelato I would give it 10 stars out of 10. I will definitely be back. 6 Pool Valley, Brighton BN1 1NJ 01273 727205

Moskha Food review Miller & Jonah Roberts
M
oskha is one of Andrew Kay’s favourite places to eat, we now know why! We went on a hot sunny day with Mum for Sunday breakfast. Moskha is a cool name and we really liked the logo. We were served by Sky who was so friendly and helpful. The café was busy and bright with nice lights and pictures, we sat by the front window. Sky gave us the menu and some colouring crayons for drawing. Miller ordered the ‘Big 5 juice’ and the ½ breakfast with hash browns, Jonah had a mango lassi and scrambled egg with Cumberland sausage, Mum had the Mexican Huevos Rancheros. Miller’s favourite part was the yummy hash browns and the delicious homemade beans. Jonah loved his freerange eggs, also the sourdough toast. They had our favourite Stokes sauce. Mum’s best bit was the guacamole and chorizo. Ollie the owner of the café came out to say hi, he has been running Moskha for 10 years. Next time we would like to try the burgers for lunch. One of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had and can’t wait to come back! 45 York Pl, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4GU 01273 248890 mokshacaffe.co.uk
La Choza Izzy Blood
A
MAZING! I would like to first start off by just saying how incredibly nice all the staff were and thank you so much for making this experience truly memorable (in a good way). I started off with a luscious watermelon slushy. Then I ordered my main course and I must admit the selection was unbelievable and I think there something for everyone, I ended up going for the nachos and my dad went for a beef quesadilla. The service was so quick and the standard of the food was through the roof. For dessert, I had chocolate filled churros with hibiscus ice cream. Honestly, I could eat plates and plates of these. Overall, I loved this restaurant and I think it is loads of fun for all the family. I would rate this place 100/10 for its food and amazing Mexican feeling. 36 Gloucester Rd, Brighton BN1 4AQ 01273 945926 lachoza.co.uk

hen we arrived at Donatello, Robert was there to meet us. He gave a great first impression for himself and the restaurant too. Donatello has been around for a long time and I can see why. It was full of people and everyone looked like they were enjoying their food. I liked the logo too. It is sick! The menus are set out nicely and it is easy to find what you are looking for. I ordered Calamari, Sardines, American Hot Pizza and Lemon Sorbet Sundae. I liked the fact you can go to a bar and make your own salad. The flavour of the Calamari stood out and the sauce just gave it that extra punch. The sardines were very tasty. The American Hot Pizza is… get ready. Hot! But it’s not the hot where you are running around, it’s just got a nice kick on the tongue. My Lemon Sorbet Sundae was just amazing and it was all about the lemon sorbet and sauce. I would recommend it (maybe for two!!) and so would my brother who tried to steal some. I loved the wall of fame that you see when you walk in and I hope that one day I will be there too! Thanks to everyone at Donatello. It was awesome and I can’t wait to go back. 13 Brighton Pl, Brighton BN1 1HJ, 01273 775477 donatello.co.uk
The Chilli Pickle Bonnie Bremner
T
he Chilli Pickle is a restaurant that I have eaten at before with my family and normally I always have the same thing, the mild kids chicken thali which I love. This time I wanted to try something different. We went at dinner time and when I walked in I felt like I was in the night sky with all the colourful stars on the roof and I loved the music. The kids menu has an elephant on it that you can colour in, a spot the difference and my favourite, a word search. To start we had some poppadoms, the chef told me they were made from lentils. My favourite food was the Malai chicken and pineapple kebab. The chicken was delicious but the pineapple was amazing, so juicy and huge. I loved it. My dad asked if I would have it again and my answer was 100 x yes. I also enjoyed the Dosa, the pancake was great, it was stuffed with a chunky potato and pea mix, and it was served with a Dhal. For pudding I had a Mango Kulfi with popping candy and fruit coulis. It was delicious. Mango is my favourite fruit. I have it every day! 17 Jubilee St, Brighton BN1 1GE, 01273 900383 thechillipickle.com

hen my mum first told me we were going to a fish and chip restaurant I didn’t really know what to expect. When I entered the restaurant I was actually really shocked because it was actually like an extremely nice place! The atmosphere was really nice, it was calm and friendly. Mostly I could just see adults but I didn’t mind. When we went in the waiters behind the counter had a massive smile on their faces, I definitely felt like this was a child friendly place. The menu looked really nice! There were lots of options. I chose sausages and chips, my mum chose haddock, mushy peas and chips. When it came it looked really nice, and she said it was delicious! The chips were my favourite as they weren’t soggy or reheated. I felt really full after eating it but I definitely liked the food a lot. My mum kept looking at the specials; she really wants to go back. Bardsley's, 22/23/23a Baker Street, Brighton 01273 681256 bardsleysfishandchips.co.uk
Street Thai Johnny Windsor
I
n the heart of the Brighton Lanes in Brighton Square is Street Thai. I went for lunch and discovered a whole new taste! Street Thai is bright and we chose to sit downstairs at a high table, but there is a fantastic roof terrace with secret walkways. The fresh passion fruit juice was sweet but still had the fresh sourness of the fruit. To start we had chicken satay, chargrilled with perfect sauce. Alongside we had vegetable tempura that was extremely crispy with a range of vegetables. I like spicy food and never having had Thai I was not sure what to expect. I discovered it was rich in flavor and not too spicy with great names. My Guai Teaw Ped was a duck noodle soup with big flavor. Mum had Pad Kra Proa Gai Krob which she said was proper Thai. The staff were extremely friendly and checked on us frequently – an interesting lunch, recommended. 5 & 20 Brighton Square, Brighton 01273 207444 streetthai.co.uk

I
n a recent poll this small but, dare I say it, perfectly formed restaurant shot up to second place. Hardly surprising either in my view. I've been a few times now and I’m ashamed that I have never written about it . Maybe subconsciously I wanted to keep it secret, after all it is small and already booking is essential if you want a table, even early in the week.
“ We left with very big smiles on our faces and full bellies ” So why so good? The answer lies in clarity of intent. This is a charcoal grill, Japanese style, and that is what they stick to. It is also great value, well priced dishes that give you the chance to dine on a budget or, should you wish, splurge. Well I was with my good friends Ms L and Mr B, food lovers to the core and my accomplices when making the series Cook It!. Neither had been so I was left to suggest what we ate. That was not a problem and I ploughed in with a portion of pickles and some kimchi. I love them and so did they, the pickles are amazing, crunchy and sour, the kimchi funky and pokey. Next the belly pork, it has to be tasted to be believed and every place that has it on their menu should try this to see just how meltingly tender this meat can be. We started with one portion but in the end we had eaten three. Then aubergine, I know some people dislike it but I simply love the creamy texture of a well handled egg plant and at Bincho they handle it with skill, choosing the long thin variety and basting it in miso before grilling, utter perfection. So too was a tempura of fresh fish that we chose from the selection of daily specials, a generous portion too. I love the skewers of chicken hearts but Ms L was not keen so I persuaded her that the skewers of chicken skin were a must, and she agreed, as good if not better than those bits that a cook will steal from a roast chicken before serving it. I did however get my way with the chicken livers which were simply amazing, how they grill them to that perfect pinkness is beyond me, but they do. I also insisted on the Korean chicken wings which are particularly good and very generous, too big when dining alone sadly. A plate of griddled lettuce was great too, refreshing and tasty Kimchi rice was a new dish for me but one I would return to when dining with friends, alone I would always go back to the grilled rice cakes, they are a nutty delight that you could struggle to manage to make at home. In fact this is the kind of food one might struggle to replicate at home – and why bother when they do it so well. We drank sake, and beer, and white wine and we left with very big smiles on our faces and full bellies. Bincho Yakitori, 63 Preston Street, Brighton BN1 2HE 01273 779021, binchoyakitori.com

M A R K WAT S O N Mark Watson is a creative comedian. He’s known for 24hour (and longer) shows, a hotel of performance – and other marvellous ideas, as well as being a novelist. Victoria Nangle finds out more Hi Mark, how are you today? I'm not bad, thanks for asking. Thank you very much for the concept of the MW tour – playing to locations beginning with M or W. I especially like mention of the show on a ferry on the Mersey. Are there any you’re a bit worried about or looking forward to logistically? As well as the ferry, there's one on a train (from Marylebone to Wycombe, so double MW points) – those two, I'm particularly looking forward to, because not enough of my tours have featured shows live on public transport before. They do carry a certain element of risk too, especially the ferry (mass seasickness, shipwrecking). I'm also looking forward to the numerous Ms and Ws which I haven't visited before, which include Matlock, Wharfedale... and of course Worthing. This playing with concepts is something you’ve been known for at the Edinburgh Fringe for years. Has there ever been a concept that you’ve had to abandon due to practical reasons but are still drawn back to? If so, what is it? A long time ago I had a show which involved writing a book with the audience, a chapter a day, and then meeting up to workshop the following chapter and so on. It was pretty fun, but totally impractical and I never finished the book (if I had, it would have been gibberish). There have been other things – shows conducted while touring on foot around the city, Olympic themed celebrations – which I've had fun with, but not explored to their limits. I'm always trying to push the boundaries of what I can
get away with in Edinburgh, but sometimes common sense or law get in the way. Congratulations on your book ‘Dan And Sam’ being picked up by Amblin – fantastic news! You mentioned that a screenplay is being written now – how much input are you able to have on the script development? I met up with the screenwriter, but I'm trying to be as unobtrusive as possible in the process. It was my book and I'm very happy they're adapting it, but I don't feel like I have ownership over the film version of it. I suppose if it went all the way to the big screen and it turned out they'd made it into a dragon epic, I'd be a bit disappointed, but that would be a nice problem to have.
“ I'll pitch it to
Minchin if I can find my way past the attack dogs ”
Would you consider collaborating with your ‘Mark Watson Makes The World Substantially Better’ support Tim Minchin off the back of his Broadway success, and create your own musical? What do you think such a show might cover – maybe bring in Tim Key too and get him to do a song and dance number? Minchin and Key have been distracted by their own projects, especially – as you say – Minchin's dalliances with Broadway. It wasn't even possible to keep the group together for our radio series (though we've always managed to find
excellent replacements). So maybe it will, indeed, take a musical to unite the old team. I'll pitch it to Minchin if I can find my way past the attack dogs who guard his Hollywood estate. Sorry, I’m sure I was getting carried away there. Thanks for your patience. Are you working on anything new currently for the radio? My regular series (these days featuring Sam Simmons and Will Adamsdale) will be back next year, and I've also written a radio sitcom pilot, about life coaches, which we're going to record later this year. So, enough to be going on with. I also pop up on the radio quite often without even warning you. Looking back on the life and times of Mark Watson, what was your favourite age to be and why? Now, is the honest answer. I had lots of good times in my twenties but I'm not nostalgic for any of it. The only time worth valuing above all others is the moment you're currently in. Maybe I'll write a selfhelp
book while I'm in this sort of mood. Did your 24hour (and longer) epic comedy marathons help prepare you at all for the non stop demands of being a parent? Not at all, really. People often regard the marathon comedy shows as some special act of endurance, and in a way they are/were, but you are greatly assisted by the energy and enthusiasm of the audience, and by the general adrenalin of the whole situation. Parenting has all the fatigue of a 24hour show, but minus most of the encouragement. An average day looking after two small children is tougher than doing a marathon comedy show, it's just that nobody will sponsor you to do it. Wishing you a most excellent rest of your day. Thank YOU! And a good day to you too. Mark Watson – The MW Tour, Connaught Theatre, Worthing, Saturday 23 September 2017, 8pm, £20/18.50

BRIGHTON LIGHTS WHAT TO DO IN THE CITY > MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WITH JOE FULLER

I wrote a whole editor’s column last week about Sunn but couldn’t help but mention this gig again since it’s the clear highlight of the week. It’s now sold out but you should check social media and ask around for spares and resales. The peaceful, bassy, thick waves of distorted guitar make for a phenomenal live experience. Top quality comedy previews at a bargain price from two members of the highly acclaimed improvisation group Racing Minds. Douglas Walker (Best Comedy Award Adelaide Fringe 2016) presents his show Zuschauer and asks what magic and silliness it is that an audience brings to the show. He is followed by Daniel Nils Roberts’ (Nominee for Best Comedy – Fringe World Australia 2017) comic lecture on the Vikings – The Causeway. The Quadrant, Friday 21 July, 7.30pm, £5

Sarah Longfield is something of a YouTube sensation, gained by writing and performing all her own music on multiple instruments, with finger tapping guitar parts, drumming, vocals and so on. A gig for any fans of impressive musicianship, or just good multitasking.
Mid week comedy highlights from the abundance of Edinburgh previews currently being enjoyed in town. Mock The Week regular Ed Gamble offers up his current musings and glimpses at the working of a comic mind currently all over television – his. And is followed – after an interval – by James Loveridge, the comedian voted ‘One To Watch’ Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival 2016. Plenty to entertain.

Miss Hope Springs is performing at Komedia next week, with a show called The Devil Made Me Do It, which will include original songs and tales of faded glory from the ‘recovering showgirl’. > ARTS WITH BRIGHTON’S ARTY

Most artists capture a moment then tell a story by depicting that moment in their art. For ‘Moments’, the current exhibition at Kellie Miller’s eponymous gallery in the South Lanes, artist and curator KelIie has selected three artists who express the subject matter in totally different ways. David Hayward’s textured paintings respond to actual locations, expressing his concern with how the edges of the landscape interact with land and water. Alexia Weill's collection of sculptures ‘Circular Impressions’ focuses on the rhythmic flow of energy created by the circular shape as she carves from natural materials such as diabase and serpentine. Finally Angela Edward’s paintings deal with people moving through spaces. Until 24 July. artymagazines.com

STAGE > John Partridge stars in a new tour of La Cage Aux Folles
M
ay 1986, The London Palladium, and La Cage Aux Folles opens, hot from Broadway and starring American legend George Hearn and British star Dennis Quilley. This was the musical that had taken Broadway by storm, based on the French comedy film of the same name. It was fun, flippant and as camp as the proverbial row of tents, but it also carried a strong and important message about homophobia, and about morals. It was not the first musical to have a strong political underbelly, South Pacific had done that many years earlier, but this, set in a glamorous St Tropez was about to introduce a whole new world to drag and the gorgeous Cagelles led by Zaza were poised ready to do just that. It probably didn’t further the cause of homosexuality but it certainly introduced a mainstream audience to an art form that had certainly been in the entertainment closet for many years. Okay, British audiences had see Danny La Rue, but Danny had always distanced himself from hardcore gay culture and his act was far more music hall than anything else. La Cage also introduced what was to become one of the most iconic of gay anthems, I Am What I Am, has been sung by so many

performers, some knowing what the song is really about and many unaware of that real coming out proud story. Who cares, it’s a great show stopping number in a show packed with great songs. Now a new revival is coming to town starring John Partridge who will play the iconic role of ‘Albin’, who moonlights as star drag act Zaza at the infamous La Cage aux Folles nightclub. Partridge’s theatre credits include the West End productions of A Chorus Line, Cats, Starlight Express and Chicago. He is also well known for playing the loveable Christian Clarke in BBC’s EastEnders and as a judge on TV’s Over The Rainbow. Adrian Zmed will play ‘Georges’, lover of Albin and owner of the nightclub. Zmed costarred with William Shatner as ‘Officer Vince Romano’ in the ‘80s hit TV

This will be his first stage appearance in the UK although he is no stranger to Broadway musicals having previously led the casts of Grease, no fewer than 3 times, Falsettos and Blood Brothers. One of the West End’s most revered leading ladies’, TV star
and recording artist Marti Webb will play ‘Jacqueline’, friend to ‘Albin’ and ‘Georges’, and owner of the restaurant ‘Chez Jacqueline’. Webb has played leading roles in numerous West End and touring musicals including Evita, Godspell, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Blood Brothers, Oliver, Oklahoma, 42nd Street, and HalfaSixpence. This show is a thought provoking musical romp packed with great comedic moments, for some of us buttering toast will never be the same again, and challenging ideas too about homophobia and gender roles and prejudice.
