wurlitzer is a peculiar marvel. I had never seen or heard Worthing Assembly Hall's wurlitzer theatre organ before, and was treated to a melodramatic introduction in Worthing Symphony Orchestra's first concert of the season. I was worrying a little that I had misread the material beforehand when I couldn’t see the organ anywhere, but in gleefully theatrical fashion the wurlitzer rose out of the ground during SaintSaëns' Organ Symphony. It was all the more memorable in a classical concert, where variety can sometimes be lacking, and the evening also stood out for a tearful tribute to WSO conductor John Gibbons from soloist Nicola Benedetti. The music was fantastic, opening with a bash of boisterous brass in Jerome Moross’ The Big Country. The most gloriously vicious moment of the evening were Benedetti's mischievous slashes of violin in Shostakovich's prickly violin concerto. These were underpinned with foreboding cellos and violas, deftly conducted by Gibbons. The third movement's emotional, swooning solo was captivating. The fourth movement was more of a gallop, which the orchestra rattled off with thrilling verve. SaintSaëns' famous piece Symphony No. 3 is a crowd pleaser for good reason, with a big recurring melody brought to life by the loud, but also warm and emotive wurlitzer. You'll recognise the tune from Babe's mice no doubt (bit.ly/1KbC1qJ). I encourage any music lover to keep an eye for a concert with the wurlitzer (the SaintSaëns work is a great place to start) and make a trip to Worthing. It's important for us to support local venues and musical organisations, and the wurlitzer is a unique instrument with a beautiful sound that has to be heard live to be appreciated.

THE AFGHAN WHIGS Seminal indie rock band The Afghan Whigs’ frontman Greg Dulli speaks exclusively to Joe Fuller on how gigs are like sex, why New Orleans is the best city in the world, and much more. I'm developing a theory that reformed bands have more of a vital gig if they're playing new material along with old stuff, rather than playing an old album through. It is of the utmost importance to me. When we did the reunion tour five years ago, obviously we went out and played our catalogue, but I will tell you that I put two cover songs in the shows that were radical covers of songs I like. And those songs, having them in the show, was very important to me because I had something that was in the now, while I was playing all of the older stuff. Promoters kept wanting us to play, and I'm like “look man, I would never go back out unless I have a new record”. So we made a new record. The great thing about the audience that my bands [The Afghan Whigs & The Twilight Singers] have cultivated over the years is that the audience is very welcoming of us doing whatever we want. [Playing a whole album in order] is almost like doing a play. You're trapped in the confines of the record. You can't play three songs and then say “hey here's another one I want to play”. That's not the game. I'm pretty against

doing that. I'm not saying I will never do it again but it's nothing I want to make a habit out of. I was sorry to hear about guitarist Dave Rosser’s death. Was the plan for him to tour recent album In Spades? When he was first diagnosed, they gave him a year to live and he lived for nine months after the diagnosis. Optimism is everyone's friend, and certainly all of us, including Dave, were hopeful that he would be able to play the shows. That he would triumph over his illness and life would go on. But it did not work out that way. He was such a vital part, he's all over the record, he's on every song. For that we get to be with him every night in that regard.

“ I’m into the

symphonic nature of rock’n’roll ”

What can people expect from the Brighton gig? Is it a raucous rock assault, or is there more of a soul element?

Is it a mix of different styles? We swap songs every night, we're doing eight albums’ worth of material. We spread it out so there will probably be a cover or two. Perhaps even a nod to The Twilight Singers. Sometimes there is, sometimes there's not. We roll around. There's 40 songs we can play and we'll probably play half that many in the show. So we have the ability to swap out a show pretty substantially as we go along. That said, sometimes you get a setlist that you like, and things that roll together, and it's fun to play them in that order. So it's hard to say what the Brighton show will be like, but it's always a ride. I'm into the symphonic nature of rock'n'roll. If you can bring a crowd up, bring them down, bring them back up again, it's like dancing or sex. You don't do the same thing over and over again, unless you're AC/DC or The Ramones. You've spoken before about the importance of recording in New Orleans, and how it can be musically inspiring. I was wondering what's special about New Orleans and how did it affect the recording of In Spades?

Well, I've recorded all or parts of records for the last 20 years in New Orleans. It's really an inspirational place for me, and it's also a great creative environment for me. There is music everywhere all the time. It's easy to get turned on there. It's architecturally beautiful, culturally beautiful, demographically beautiful. You mentioned cultivating an audience that's quite understanding or forgiving of doing your thing and playing new stuff. How did you cultivate that? Was that luck or the nature of the fans? We never had a hit record so we never felt like “oh we have to play that or have to play this”. We just made the best records that we could every time. That's my goal in life and my aim every time I make a record. This is my best at this time. I've been lucky that we have a really small but incredibly fervent and loyal audience and they go with us wherever we wanna go, and that's a beautiful place to be as an artist. I

probably give the impression that my life is one long list of fine meals in classy restaurants, and I will willingly admit that I would dearly love that it were. But the truth is somewhat less glamorous. That’s not to say that it is any less delightful. I am, like most people, as fond of the simple things in life as the fancy. I can get excited about a cheerful fry up in a decent old school caff, a well made sandwich or bar snack. The truth is that there are only two kinds of food, good food and bad food and price or location are pretty secondary factors. On this theme I would like to highly recommend BeFries which is at the top of West Street. It’s the Belgian model where crisp chips are served with a variety of sauces, many of which are inspired by the foods of Europe’s colonial past, so you can expect satay and chilli and sweet mayonnaise and melted cheese… so many sauces and the majority made by the clever owners on the premises. I pop in often and get a carb fix, they are sensibly priced and perfectly made, a winner in my book.

Señor Buddha is a modern tapas bar located at Preston Circus, offering an ever changing tapas menu based around Spanish and East Asian cuisine. With just 24 seats, this small tapas bar is always busy so booking is recommended. 9 Preston Road, Brighton, BN1 4QE | www.senorbuddha.co.uk 01273 567832 | bookings@senorbuddha.co.uk

Coggings & Co

“ I pop in often and get a carb fix ” I often tell my friends that a meal out is the evening’s entertainment, not something that you tack on to a cinema or theatre trip. But there are moments when time is of the essence and the desire to eat good food is bolstered by the “need” to eat. On these occasions we are pretty well served by our pubs and I have been found tucking in to a plate of fried chicken in The Mucky Duck in Manchester Street which I loved, or mopping up a very decent burger or Thai chicken curry at The Crescent, a pub I have been going to almost every Tuesday for the last 25 years or so. And when it comes to breakfast these days I go to Brewed in Lewes Road or slip into Red Roaster, madeover to accommodate Mr Matt Gillan it looks brilliant and their coffee is as good as ever and the food infinitely better. Last night I was caused to visit an old haunt, The Park Crescent, and needed to eat. I ordered a caesar salad with griddled chicken, I know, a bit of a muddled American dish but one that perfectly suited the prestorm humidity. It was excellent, really well made, plenty of anchovies, capers, croutons and shaved parmesan and the chicken was juicy and tender too. I was impressed and happy and full. I get to eat lots of fancy food but a simple supper, be it chips or salad, can put a very big smile on my face. www.befries.com

W

hy is it that my productivity determines my happiness? At what point did my disposition shift from lazy layabout content to do nothing all day and not feel a shred of guilt or remorse about it, to hyper efficiency orientated militantly organised todo list obsessor? There’s undoubtedly a factor of ‘growing up’ involved. Around the time I started university, at some point between learning how hard it is to buy a week’s worth of food when you don’t know what days you’re going to be in and therefore whether or not to buy fresh food and risk it going off before you have time to cook with it, and discovering that financial responsibility is more than just resisting the urge to buy unnecessary things, it’s constant number crunching and quickly scribbled equations to make sure that yes, you do have enough for dessert without having to starve for the next week, I realised that I didn’t want to continue being the unproductive, disorganised walking disaster that I had perfected during my teenage years.

“ The desire for change has to come from yourself ” Being forced to be an adult made me want to be an adult. I started enjoying being able to handle my money well, and perfecting the art of the perfect weekly shop, and becoming a more responsible, reliable individual. I started deriving a massive sense of satisfaction every time I successfully ‘adulted’ a situation. And consequently I began to feel myself growing into a new phase of my life, one that involved more respect, especially for myself. I found that all this new organisation was a means of respecting myself enough to improve my own quality of life and better myself, and in all this realisation stumbled upon a nugget of truth about what it means to be an adult. You have to want to improve if you ever want to improve at all. The desire for change has to come from yourself if you ever want it to stick. But that still doesn’t explain why I’m so obsessive over my new productiveness. It was something a friend said to me recently that helped me understand it. He explained to me how it was important that everything we do comes from a place of love, a genuinely positive place, otherwise we risk doing things that might seem selfbeneficial, like becoming organised, out of fear rather than love. This gave me a much needed new perspective. My new goal is to rid myself of the fear of slipping back into my old ways, and focus on the love that motivates me to continue bettering myself. 8 | LATEST 7

’ve been thinking very hard about my TV chat show over the last few weeks. Thoughts provoked by my choice of guests. You see the show is part of our LGBT+ thread, programmes aimed at the gay community and, for the most part my guests have been representatives of that community. I am sure that I will continue in a similar vein, bringing people to the show who play an important part in gay life, but I have already started to invite guests onto the show who are not gay and one or two people have asked me why. Well my answer is simple and I hope that it will make sense. My life is simply not defined by my sexuality. I feel pretty confident that I am not alone in this. Lots of my friends who are gay are not defined by their sexuality either. Nor are all of my friends chosen because of their sexuality either. I have male and female friends who are gay of course but I have plenty who are heterosexual and some who I am sure are asexual. I love and like them all equally because those definitions are their own business, and not mine. In crude terms what they do in private and in bed, or not in bed for that matter, is their choice and has no influence on my relationship with them.

“ My life is simply not defined by my sexuality ” In the same way I am convinced that most people are interested in a wide range of things that are not defined by their sexual preferences. I have straight male friends who love musical theatre and gay friends who are crazy about rugby and football. I had a chat with the boss about this a few weeks ago. I had the opportunity to invite a few very well known guests onto my show to talk about their work, Carol Harrison was coming in to talk about The Small Faces and her play All Or Nothing and two weeks later Jodie Prenger came in to talk about her career and her new role in Shirley Valentine, a play that did not require her to unleash that fabulous voice. Latest Bill and I agreed that the Soufflé was a richer dish if I opened the oven and popped in a wide, nonsexualpreference defined list of guest ingredients and so far it seems to be working. I also notice from the messages that I receive in person and through social media that many of my viewers are not from the LGBT+ community, I mean my mum, clearly not gay (but very gay friendly indeed) is a regular online viewer and so are my family back up north. Okay yes, they are family, but I am sure that they would not tune in again and again if they did not like it. So watch this space and watch the show, there will still be my gay guests, my trans friends and political friends too and we will still be talking about topics that directly affect the LGBT+ world but there is going to be more, so much more. So popular he made a weekend away of it – Russell Howard is in town with his new show ‘Round The World’. It’s his biggest global tour to date, and a return to standup after an absence of three years. Canadian comic Bobby Mair (known for hitting the headlines a couple of years ago when he appeared on Katie Hopkins’ shotlived show and donated part of his fee to “all the people she hates”) headlines this month’s classic Comic Boom. Support acts are handselected as those to watch out for – with these slots previously filled by the likes of Seann Walsh, Angela Barnes and Nick Helm – look out for some gems you can tell your grandkids about.

Juanita Stein's music might be quite derivative, but I don't mind because her vocals remind me of Karen Peris' from brilliant band The Innocence Mission. Other influences range from Roy Orbison to Dusty Springfield, so if you like those songwriting titans then you might like this gig at the Prince Albert.

STAGE

In The Dark: Exciting events in unusual places at the Theatre Royal Brighton

F

rom the beginning of August the Theatre Royal closes for maintenance for 2 weeks, but although the main stage is ‘dark’ there’s plenty going on elsewhere. Originally created in order to utilise the building during an unexpected dark period, Out of Hours events and workshops have become an established part of Theatre Royal Brighton’s programme, offering new, small scale performances, experiences and participatory activities held outside normal performance times in areas of the building not generally accessible to the public. There’s a sense of excitement from the moment you arrive at the Stage Door for an Out of Hours event. From start to finish the customer’s experience is special with magical lighting, beautiful pop up bars in unusual places and access to the hidden corners of the building including under stage,

dressing rooms, and the Last Gulp actors bar, showing off the unique history and heritage of the building.

“ A sense of

excitement from the moment you arrive ”

This year the Out of Hours season has some fantastic experiences for children and families including Blue, a tiny delight of music, puppetry and invention performed deep beneath the stage for audiences of 15 at a time; exciting creative workshops, led by artist Abi Horn, where children can make sun prints, rainbow catchers, fairy lanterns and paper cut pictures to add to our Enchanted Forests installation, turning the outside of the Theatre into a woody fairy tale trail; and a magical parade to a

hidden spot for a Twilight Picnic. Adults can enjoy Torchlight Tours of the Theatre at night; the eerie and atmospheric Victorian magic of Miller & Brooks in Gaslight Tales; create a mini Puppet Idol with puppeteer Fran Malone; and leave with a bitter taste in their mouth after The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney, a macabre, puppet told tale of Victorian intrigue, obsession, murder and confectionery! A series of exciting and fascinating events for the young and not so young, and an ideal diversion for families this summer holiday. Torchlight Tours, Gaslight Tales, Blue, Enchanted Forests, Twilight Picnic, Puppet Idols, and The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney are running from 3rd to 10th August at various times. Visit www.atgtickets.com/brighton for more information 0844 871 7650* * Calls cost up to 7p per minute, plus your phone company’s access charge

Rise started and ended with the unexpected. The show consisted of many sketches with the interconnecting theme of love. Halfway through an irate giant lion and oversized bunny rabbit argued and fornicated on stage. Their xrated pictures showed the ensuing romance. It got more surreal from here – a moon balloon, man balloon and girl with balloon hair on a tight wire. The show needed some finetuning. Nonetheless creative minds, such as these, who make their ideas tangible for an audience to enjoy are praiseworthy. I liked that the creators were fearless and didn’t shy away from bringing their creations to stage, no matter how weird or wonderful. Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, 18 July 2017

> I’ve got the power...

I

t’ll be quieter in August – I hope,” remarked my mother the other day. This was after a series of family events, her own open studios in the artist studios she shares, birthdays, walking trips, and trying to schedule in work and other commitments. It reminded me of when I was a kid and something I had said to her. As a tall – or lanky if you prefer – kid who embraced social awkwardness as if it was a beautiful giant box of chocolates, secondary school saw me arrive with a developing stoop. Nothing heavy, just your usual teenage hunched shoulders and curtain of hair to hide behind. However, being taller than everyone else meant that I stayed in that stoop pretty much all the time.

“ Teenage hunched shoulders and curtain of hair to hide behind ” It got so bad that I remember it being a regular thing for me to go to the school nurse complaining of pains in my side, only for it to transpire that I was bending over so much my middle was getting caught on my ribs. Sounds a bit contortiony, but the only way I could shake the pain was to lie flat on my back for about ten minutes to right myself again. A ridiculous state of affairs. Anyway, after a bit my kind mother looked into it and found me an Alexander Technique teacher to help with my posture. Soon Alexander Technique lessons after school became a regular thing, and because I was in secondary school I was trusted to take

myself along to them and then home afterwards. Anyway, one day I came straight home. I forgot my Alexander Technique class entirely. And my mother was furious. She’d researched it, booked it, was juggling God knows how many other things at the same time as being a mature student, and the commitment to the lovely teacher lady who I had let down... I was very sorry. “... And I hope this never happens again!” my mother finished. “I hope so too.” I replied miserably. At which point it was drawn to my attention that this was something I was entirely in control of and ‘hope’ should have nothing to do with it. Fair play. And it stuck with me. So, back to my mother’s month ahead... and I bit my tongue. There is no way I’m going to tell her that her ‘hope’ to be more free in August is in her own hands. That’s downright foolish on my part! But I will look to myself and my own choices. I’ll do more than ‘hope’ for a chilled August. I’ll draw great big swathes through my diary to make sure of it! And guard each scheduled afternoon in the sun as fiercely as my mother ever was to me.
