How to celebrate Albion’s promotion with Latest
The uninformed and the ignorant
F
T
antasy football is a multilayered, complicated, gripping puzzle... or just a bit of fun. Firstly, it gives you reasons to enjoy football games that you might otherwise have little to no interest in. You select 11 players out of a squad of 15, aiming for those who will get the most goals, assists and clean sheets. Before FPL, I might not have watched Stoke vs West Brom, but if dear Gareth McAuley is in my team, the stakes are raised. The second stratum of enjoyment, and for me the most important, is the game of Fantasy Premier League in itself. Some might casually play with players they like and then let their team do what they will. That's fun in its own way but is highly unlikely to result in winning friends' minileagues. Geekier players like me use sites such as fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for tips on good affordable players, fixtures, form guides and more, with friendly active communities to seek advice from. FPL really is a sort of puzzle or board game, where you must decide how to get the most out of your limited 100m budget. You can't afford all the best players, so you have to prioritise better defenders, midfielders or strikers, gambling on future performances using data or your own assessments from watching games. Luck plays a part, but there is a wealth of shared knowledge and experience to help maximise your team's potential and finish as highly as possible in the world. I finished in the top 2,000 out of over 4.5 million players last season, which I'm quite proud of, and might struggle to ever beat. I will strive to better that however, and would be happy to see as many readers as possible celebrate BHAFC’s promotion by joining our league. Go to fantasy.premierleague.com and join private league code 7303579927 to get involved.

here is an important distinction to make between the uninformed and the ignorant. Those who are uninformed have for whatever reason not come into contact with certain knowledge, or do not have access to it. In contrast those who are ignorant make the conscious choice to ignore certain knowledge. This distinction is more important today than ever in the world of gender and sexuality. Inspired by this new age of freedom of expression, soul searching and individual identity ideas that have previously only existed in marginalised fringe communities are coming to the forefront of society and entering the mainstream. With all change comes confusion however, so it’s my hope that I can shed a little light for those who feel they’re in the dark. Here’s a quick 101 on gender and sexuality in the 21st century: some things to help you get by in the modern world. Cisgender: You identify with the biological sex you were born with i.e you were born a man and you identify as a man Nonbinary: You reject the idea that there are only two genders i.e you combine elements of the two genders, or completely reject all gender association Transgender: You identify with a biological sex different to the one you were born with i.e you were born a man but you identify as a woman Bisexual: You are attracted to both men and women Pansexual: You are attracted to personalities rather than physicality and biological sex Asexual: You do not feel sexual attraction for any people Queer: The umbrella term for any people who are not heterosexual or cisgendered, i.e all of the above I hope that was enlightening! Go out, enjoy your new words, and make the world a more inclusive place!

udiences are standing and cheering, and the national critics are raving about Bill Kenwright’s spectacularly stunning and hilariously funny new production of La Cage Aux Folles, currently on its first national UK tour. La Cage Aux Folles will be coming to Theatre Royal Brighton from 15 – 26 August. Written by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman, and based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, La Cage aux Folles follows the story of Georges, the manager of a Saint Tropez nightclub, and his partner, Albin, a drag artiste and the club’s star attraction. They live an idyllic existence in the south of France but behind the curtains of this sparkling extravaganza, all may be about to change when Georges’ son JeanMichel announces his engagement to the daughter of a notorious right wing politician determined to close down the local colourful night life. Drama and hilarity ensue when a meeting of the parents forces them to cover up their vibrant lifestyle. Will Albin be able to play the role of his life to ensure that JeanMichel can marry his love?

JON RONSON The journalist and writer of bestselling books – including The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Psychopath Test – spoke with Victoria Nangle about his forthcoming Psychopath Night and more Hello, and how are you today? I’m okay thank you! I feel I’ve taken on just the right amount of work. Any more and I’ll become panicky and overwhelmed, any less and I’ll feel I am a failure, have always failed, will always fail. However, I currently live in New York and am very uneasy about the political turmoil. I think Philip Roth summed it up well: “What is most terrifying is that he makes any and everything possible.” If you had a magic wand cutting through all access and permission disputes, who would be top of your interview wish list and why? Donald Trump, Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway, Stephen Bannon. Why: because I want to try and understand what’s going on inside their heads. We live in interesting times. How do you think future historians will speak of the current global activities? That we lost our minds for a while. We ignored the warnings from history and allowed authoritarian rule to take over. Crazy, pointless decisions were made in our name – like Trump’s immigration executive order. People were at fault from all sides. In the run up to Brexit, as well as to Trump’s election, a kind of aggressive authoritarianism swept politics and culture. Social media was partly to blame: aggressive left wing authoritarianism seemed cool on social media. It’s like we all polluted the waters and Trump emerged from them like a mutant fish. Future writers will make stage musicals about these times, like Cabaret, and audiences will be in tears. Your Psychopath Night seems very apposite for the times. Is ‘psychopath’ a catchall these
days for people who say things we don’t agree with and refuse to agree with us? Yes. It’s an overused word. We love to declare other people insane, especially people we don’t like. Actually I don’t think Donald Trump is a psychopath and even if he is I don’t think people should be labeling him a psychopath from afar. Because who’s going to be labelled from afar next? You? A mental health activist – @_sectioned – put it well to me on Twitter the other day. He said: ‘Times of fear and chaos are when old myths, stereotypes & prejudices come out, and it's in unprecedented times that marginalized folks become more vulnerable and need all the help we can get – not to be further stigmatized & thrown under the bus by doctors.’ Good point, right?
“ Future writers will make stage musicals about these times ”
Are all psychopaths dangerous? Well I think anyone who lacks empathy is going to be malevolent in one way or another. But most proper highscoring psychopaths aren’t violent. According to Robert Hare (inventor of the psychopath checklist) 4% of CEOs are psychopaths – as opposed to 1% of the general population. Did curiosity kill the cat – or did it just get into a box so that no one could see it and possibly go to sleep? It’s strange and sad that social media has, I think, made
people less curious. It should be the opposite. It gives us a window into lives we’d never normally get to glimpse. But instead of curiosity we frequently go for instant judgment. We surround ourselves with people who feel the same way we do. And if someone with an opposing point of view enters our bubble, we scream them out. You seem to find a humour in some of the darkest places, but with a light hand. Is it hard to mine this, or is it simply part of the way you view most of the world? It can be hard to mine. But if I tell a story that doesn’t have any humour in it, I tend to feel I’ve failed. Actually that’s not entirely true. Some of my favourite stories that I’ve written don’t have much humour: Justine Sacco from Shamed, Ruby Ridge from Them. But they’re exceptions. Usually I really want to find a kind of clash of humour and empathy and horror. Nothing breaks hearts more than a wellconstructed juxtaposition between humour and horror. When I put it like that I sound like a psychopath.
Off the back of your most recent book – So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed – what is your opinion of Donald Trump’s Twitter use? We now have a President who routinely Twittershames his opponents, even when they’re powerless private individuals. At the end of 2015, for example, a young student named Lauren Batchelder stood up at a political forum and told Donald Trump that she didn’t think he was ‘a friend to women’. The next morning he went for her on Twitter, calling her an ‘arrogant young woman’. As a result, she was bombarded with rape threats and death threats. Somewhat ironically, Melania Trump recently told a rally in Philadelphia that as First Lady she wants to tackle social media bullying, because it has ‘gotten too mean and too rough’. What is the secret to happiness? Jesus, don’t ask me. I’m stressed out and miserable. Actually, I do know. Nine hours sleep. STAGE
The Time of My Life: Dirty Dancing heads to Crawley
D
irty Dancing is perhaps the ultimate chick flick, the movie phenomenon that had few known stars and was produced by a relatively unknown Hollywood studio. It has gone on to become a record breaking international success, and possibly the cause of innumerable back injuries as over enthusiastic lovers attempt that iconic lift. But can this kind of screen to stage adaptation ever hit the right note for dedicated fans of the original? Well clearly this production can, as its history will show. The classic story of Baby and Johnny featured the hit songs 'Hungry Eyes', ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heart stopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’. It was eventually made into a stage musical that has been a storming West End Success running for two seasons and then two hit UK Tours, and now it’s back and heading to the Hawth in Crawley.

Full of passion and romance, heartpounding music and sensationally sexy dancing, this recordbreaking all new concept of the show is directed by Federico Bellone, choreographed by Gillian Bruce with set design re imagined by top Italian designer Roberto Comotti. It premiered in Milan in July 2015, subsequently packing out the 15,000 seat Roman Arena in Verona, and then played a season in Rome.
“ Full of passion, romance and heartpounding music ”
It’s the summer of 1963, and 17 year old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with
her older sister and parents, she shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles across an allnight dance party at the staff quarters. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both onstage and off, and two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage originally opened at London’s Aldwych Theatre in 2006 with a record breaking advance of £15 million, making it the fastest ever selling show in West End theatre history. The production became the longest running show in the history of the Aldwych Theatre and played to over two million people during its triumphant five year run. Produced by Karl Sydow, Joye Entertainment and Paul Elliott, in association with Lionsgate and Magic Hour Productions, and written by Eleanor Bergstein, script writer of the phenomenally successful 1987 film, the production features the much loved characters and original dialogue from the iconic film, as well as exciting extra scenes added in. 14 – 19 August The Hawth, Crawley Tickets from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or online hawth.co.uk
REVIEW > BREMF – ROOTS – 2017 Programme Launch
T
his year BREMF is telling stories about the gradual and multifaceted development of music. There’s a surprisingly rich programme including two early stage works: Rameau’s ‘Pygmalion’ (1748) and Monteverdi’s ‘Orfeo’ (1607), one of the very first operas; and Carissimi’s ‘Jephte’ (c.1648), the first great oratorio. Compositions by Alfonso the Wise of Spain (13th century), 18th century Indian and English music, traditional Scottish airs and much more feature in this year’s heady mix. A short recital by Improviso was warmly appreciated. This talented young ensemble is being mentored within the BREMF LIVE! scheme which is helping to launch so many promising careers.

fter being laid up with what I’ve been assured can be called ‘Bambi legs’, as well as various other virustype symptoms for the weekend, I ventured out from my recovery to sit on my stoop with a visiting friend and catch up on the world outside. I can’t undersell how good friends are when you’re feeling spaced out and not hugely connected to anything. I was explaining how I had ended up in bed dozing fitfully for two days straight. “You know that thing where I’ve been doing too much but I don’t realise because I’m in the middle of it and then I get ill and don’t realise until someone says – ‘have a word with yourself’? That.” My pal nodded sagely.
“ Don’t realise until someone says – ‘have a word with yourself’ ” “Good ‘someone’.” And I couldn’t help but agree how invaluable it is to have at least one ‘someone’, who will pull me aside and let me know calmly what I’m speeding past too fast to see. I try to offer that same favour in return, but it’s a tricky navigation to perform. How do you let someone know a bit of ‘helpful’ advice without it becoming bossy interference? To be honest, I tend to feel that you know yourself best, so if someone looks like their losing touch with that I might ask them a few questions.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t react too well when friends – however wellmeaning – start trying to issue ‘facts’ about me and my life while I’m in the middle of living it. Whereas someone saying to me: ‘Are you feeling okay?’, ‘You know it’s alright if you don’t get everything done today...’, and ‘Just because you want to make them cookies, it doesn’t mean you have to make them cookies for this visit....’ Well, it helps give me a bit of perspective. And I can also ignore them without getting into an argument about it – which is always a bonus. It’s quite abrupt to tell someone something about themselves. Equally annoying when you hold back and go: “Ha! I was waiting for you to work that one out!” I can’t tell you the amount of control I mustered not to knock that particular bright spark’s block off. The trick is to find a balance. “Do you think you could be...?” works just as well as “Have you ever thought of...?” And they don’t have to be embraced from the off. Just leave them there to germinate. And hopefully your pals won’t end up with stupid ‘Bambi legs’. Think I’ll have another doze.
