ere is a spiritual successor to previous Joegoestoother places columns such as the Hastings, Manchester and Venice missives. The next target for this rover: Chichester. The main reason for the visit was for Minerva Theatre and The House They Grew Up In, but my partner and I like to make the most of a theatre outing: making a day of it when possible. We pottered through the town, plundering charity shops for bits. I was chuffed with a garishly sleeved but strangely appealing solo violin CD, but happier when we found Kim's Bookshop. Kim's Bookshop was a surprisingly voluminous bookshop, stacked in a narrow building over three or four floors. The frontage wouldn't have suggested such a large stock, which is a nice Diagon Alleyesque touch, although they might profit from publicising their abundant wares more effectively. An idiosyncratic choice also to put popular books such as fiction and biography right at the top of the building. Then, a visit to the cathedral: a welcome quiet spot in the middle of the city, and with a great modern art exhibition by Frieda Hughes to browse too. Pallant House Gallery was the highlight of the day however, our first visit unearting an extremely generous and varied art gallery to frequent. The John Minton exhibition alone (running until 1 October) would justify a daytrip; I was particularly struck by his 'Surrey Landscape', created with pen and ink on paper. I was also moved by his melancholy portraits and surprised by the vibrant contrast with his more colourful Caribbean works. The Minerva Theatre was a great inthe round auditorium, with impressive moving sets for a fairly intimate space. You can read my thoughts on the play at bit.ly/2ulwzAF.

elf expression is vital to us. It allows us to communicate our individuality and share the thoughts and beliefs unique to us. This is true for any kind of self expression, be it the words that come out of our mouths, the creations we make with our minds, or the clothes we wear on our bodies. Recently I’ve been struggling with the idea that my clothes do not accurately represent me. On the one hand I convince myself that clothing and shoes and accessories and everything in that sphere is a pursuit of vanity and not important in the grander scheme of things. However, on the other hand, as I explained before, clothes are a cornerstone of self expression: using clothes one is able to express themselves visually. In this age of anonymity, in an ever growing population, visual expression is more important than ever. As communication between strangers continues to dwindle, clothes tell a story that is free to be read by any passerby, allowing you to properly communicate who you are and what you are about without having to stop every stranger on the street to tell them your life story. I began to feel as if wearing clothes I didn’t feel properly represented me felt as if I was wearing the wrong skin. It seems to me that those people whose style was cleancut and unique are the stars of the show, and those who lack any specific aesthetic are the extras, blending into the background because they have nothing to say. I know I have something to say, I just don’t know how! So I’ve decided to dedicate a little more time, energy and money to the world of fashion and aesthetic. But I’m doing it on my own terms. This won’t be a pursuit of vanity, hopefully it will be the building blocks for newfound confidence in the way I express myself, and a way of breaking out of our conformist culture. My goal is to feel comfortable and content walking down the street, knowing that others see me the way I see myself.

n advance of the forthcoming Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival I have been taking a look at some of the more affordable dining options in the city. Whilst the festival celebrates the very best of local chefs and produce and the finest of dining options too, there are those moments when you crave something simple, and dare I say it, something less demanding on the wallet. On a recent stop I had a great coffee coupled with the worst cake I have ever encountered, a vegan lemon and ginger cake, yes I know, I might have guessed when I read the word vegan but… well to create a cake that tasted of neither lemon or ginger, and come to that cake, well that’s quite an achievement. The coffee was good I suppose. A few days ago, in need of a light lunch I ventured into, with a friend, a créperie in the centre of town. As Victoria Wood once said “We crept in, had a crepe, and crept out again”. I like pancakes, in London in the ‘70s, yes that long ago, we would go to Asterix at World’s End. In the ‘90s in Brighton we went to Cripes, how we loved Cripes, now long gone but still remembered. On this occasion Mr S and I went into Crêpe Affaire. It’s not a fast food joint, by their very nature crépes have to be made fresh and take a little time, so we ordered and sat outside in the sun enjoying excellent freshly squeezed orange juice. Mr S, a demivegi, chose the vegetable option in a buckwheat pancake. I had advised buckwheat as in my opinion they have a better flavour especially when coupled with a savoury filling, he loved it. I chose the Mexican chicken in buckwheat too and it was good too. I might have suggested a little more chilli fire in the filling but it was packed with tasty meat and rice and went down well. I will certainly return for those occasions when I need a tasty light lunch that will not break the bank.
“ By their very nature
crêpes have to be made fresh ”

Tea Time Most people think of me as a seasoned boozer, and in fairness I do like a tipple, but the truth is I am a tea and coffee drinker, and I particularly like mint teas and the like, but as their popularity has risen I have noted a steady decline in quality. So I was delighted to discover a brand called Hoogly. So far I have been more than impressed by their mint tea which is very fresh and has visible leaf content rather than dust. I can say the same of their lemon and ginger brew which again has visible content in the silky bags and packs a proper punch of citrus and ginger fire, and it does it fast, you don’t need to bash the bags around to extract the flavour. For stockists go to hooglytea.com

JOEL DOMMETT Comedian Joel Dommett has been all over our telly screens and is set to tour the country with a new show. He talks to Victoria Nangle about Drunk History, holidays and crowd surfing Life comes across as a great big adventure for you – from international gigging to being runner up in last year's I'm A Celebrity… What was the most recent adventure that you had on a more local scale? Waking up every day is an adventure. Trying not to snooze the alarm is in many ways harder than being in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here because if you press snooze for the fourth time nobody will see it. This morning I woke up early and was very proud of myself until I left the house and realised that is the time that all adults get up.
choose your drinks and choose your historical story you're covering? You do get to choose your drink but not the story. It's the most fun show I've ever done. You get paid to get drunk. It's crazy. They film three or so in a day and on the last series I had an early slot. You are dropped off safely at your house then you are just hammered at 5 in the afternoon. That's so much time left in the day to text all your exgirlfriends.
What is your writing process when you write a new show? Me and my best friend Steve throw new ideas around via text throughout the year then when it's time to start writing a new show I write out all those texts in a document then go on stage and try it all. We slowly carve something that resembles funny.
like an alcoholic dragon ”
I've enjoyed watching you on Drunk History. Do you get to
“ Makes me feel How genuine is the level of drunkenness depicted on the show, really? I can’t speak for anyone else but both times I have done it I have vomited quite horrifically afterwards. Champagne was a terrible
choice. I quite like vomiting. Makes me feel like an alcoholic dragon. Do you have a rule for yourself as to how much booze you have when you're performing live, and have you ever done stand up drunk? I don't drink at all before I go on stage. I don't really drink much anyway so if I have one beer I get tipsy quickly. What is your favourite festive holiday – Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc. and why? I love Christmas because I get to see my family. I work so much these days and I don't see them enough... but also because of pigs in blankets obviously. You can be very physical in your delivery. I'm tall and long, so can sympathise with knocking things and getting fully enthusiastic. Where's the most unusual place you've ever damaged yourself or something else due to your own enthusiasm? At the end of my tour show I crowd surf on a sat down
audience (spoiler alert). The other day I fell fully on the floor due to there being a gap. There is nothing more humiliating than crowd surfing to an empty seat. What's the most ridiculous thing you have bought in the last week? I really don't buy much. I basically spend all my money on food and Ubers. What do you think 90year old you will be like, and what would you ask him if he popped up in a time machine? I think I will be a cool 90 year old. It's so strange to think that 90 year olds will be listening to rap music. To be fair I think 90 year olds nowadays probably listen to Drake. Everyone listens to Drake. If a 90 year old me popped up in a time machine I would ask him "what number did the Fast and the Furious movies go up to?". Bravi – Russian State Opera performs the premiere of Tosca and Madama Butterfly
O
pera is so often branded as being an elitist and expensive art form, and in some circumstances it can certainly be expensive, or should I say that it does not come cheap. Some of the finest companies charge what they do because that is what it costs, and some are not in receipt of any government funding to do what they do either. So I tip my hat to the brilliant Glyndebourne who not only do it so well but also have programmes that offer affordable tickets to young people, and an amazing touring programme where they are certainly not expensive. I also praise Ellen Kent who champions affordable opera productions year on year to much acclaim. Her company tour indefatigably, bringing the classic repertoire to a wide audience and offering people the opportunity to see, hear and decide if opera is for them.

And now we can see the highly acclaimed Russian State Opera as it returns to Sussex and the Hawth in Crawley with two of the most colourful & exotic and tragic operas, well tragedy so often plays a part in this art form and gives rose to some of the most beautiful and plaintive music ever written.
“ Some of the
most plaintive music ever written ”
Few operas match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madama Butterfly is a stunning work and a brilliant introduction to opera with memorable melodies throughout. It tells the story of a doomed love affair between
an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride, whose selfsacrifice and defiance of her family leads to heartbreak and tragedy. Puccini’s Tosca is a melodrama where love and politics collide, and murder takes place at the highest level. Tosca is one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time and again packed with memorable arias. If you’ve never tried opera before but want to, where better than with these two excellent opportunities to hear a full 30 piece orchestra, a fine chorus and excellent soloists, the full experience with brand new settings and fantastic costumes, exquisite singing, and those wonderful tunes that may well turn you into the fullon opera buff. This autumn you can also see the Glyndebourne Tour at their beautiful Sussex home with productions of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, Brett Dean’s new work Hamlet and Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. 12 Sep, Madama Butterfly 13 Sept, Tosca The Hawth Crawley, 01293 553636 Glyndebourne Tour at home 726 October see website for full times and dates (full tour runs until 2 December) glyndebourne.com, 01273 815000
T
he play started out as a puzzle, but happily prolonged the mystery with partly comic, partly tragic scenes when the reclusive siblings were visited by a young boy. It lingered on the worst aspects of humanity for a spell, but thankfully an extended coda ended proceedings on a calmer, more optimistic note. Samantha Spiro’s triumphantly twitchy Peppy was a vibrant combination of prim pronunciation filled with mellifluous consonants, whereas Daniel was a quieter, more graceful presence for the most part, rendered realistic and warm by Daniel Ryan. Some found the final part overlong but I enjoyed its protracted style. It was a good structural decision and a fitting end to linger with the heartbeat of the play: the engaging performances of both brother and sister.

I
went on my first Gay Pride march at the age of 21, which makes this my fortieth year of standing up and being proud. Of course for many gay men and women, our transgender and bisexual communities and even those who are undecided, Pride is not a once a year event, it’s a full time stance, a lifestyle commitment. We live the life we have, not a life we have chosen but one I believe we are born with and many of us are lucky enough to be able to do that for the most part without problems.
“ It’s a walk that I will never forget ” A little over a week ago it was Brighton Pride, a massive event, an all encompassing event that has returned some of the key elements that made me march all those years ago. Part celebration, part protest – it was a joy! I turned up early to meet a good friend and he asked if I would help him carry a banner. I said yes and before I knew it I was with him and two gloriously outrageous drag nuns from the Bavarian chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, over here especially for Pride and joining Chris and I in leading the parade. It’s not a huge walk to Preston Park from the peace statue, but it’s a walk that I will never ever forget. The pavements were lined with fabulously bedecked people, people of all ages, from tiny babies to my generation and beyond. They were in places lined up so deep that from the road we simply could not see the back of
the crowd. It was a sea of colour, a wall of sound and massive display that our beautiful city clearly embraces the LGBT+ world. There were plenty of LGBT+ people not on the march but simply lining the route but for the most part these were our friends from the world so clumsily now referred to as heteronormative, we so need another word to describe that don’t we! I highfived, not something I often have recourse to, and I chanted and sang and for those few hours I felt a tidal wave, no a tsunami of love as the people of our amazing city expressed themselves, an expression of acceptance and of joy. This was a vision of a real equality that we one day must reach, where the word becomes redundant because we no longer need to use it. We are all equal.
