Competitions: a fun but disquieting experience

f you're not watching the latest series of Twin Peaks then you're making a big mistake. Catch up on Sky Atlantic or preorder the DVD/BluRay release when it’s available: you're in for a mesmerising show. It manages to thrill and entertain even when feeling slow, or even mundane at times. The original Twin Peaks series had an oftforgotten edge to it, but also a gripping murder mystery plot, warm characters and comic interludes. This series is darker for the most part, but there's resplendent, singular beauty in the episodes. I won't share any spoilers but an escape, of sorts, from a lodge, is an astonishing sequence of traditional Peaksian backwards talk mixed with ferreting, glitchy sound design. David Lynch is credited as ‘Sound Design’ on every episode in fact, and these episodes should be played loud, in a dark room, to appreciate a unique audiovisual feast. I would rewatch them in fact, but I want to save that treat for future cinema marathons. The eighth episode has been heralded as one of the most experimental hours of television of all time. Listen to Penderecki's powerful work 'Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima' and imagine it soundtracking Kubrick's bravura 'Star Gate' sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey and you'll get a vague idea. Add to that the most memorable and terrifying woodsman/Abraham Lincoln impersonator of all time too. I was also introduced to the fantastic industrial metal of Uniform: ‘Wake in Fright’ is the best rock album released since ‘Sunbather’ (bit.ly/2dy8kEf). An accompanying podcast can enhance the experience: check out the brilliant Brightonbased podcast 'Diane' at diane.libsyn.com for intelligent insights mixed with friendly, communal fandom.

’m starting to realise that cocktail competitions are big business. With almost all major spirits producers now holding showdowns, as well as informal barled events and smaller brands getting in on the action, I would say that there will be easily 200 cocktail competitions in Britain alone this year. Competitions are a fun but ultimately disquieting experience. You work on perfecting one drink that usually contains pretentious homemade ingredients like sous vide rosemary infused vodka. Then you show up to a dauntingly fancy bar and serve your creation to a room of 50 of your peers, industry experts and judges. So what is this all for? At the end of the day, cocktail competitions are designed and funded by brands to sell products. They achieve this through publicity and making bartenders love them. They know better than anyone that nothing sells a product like a bartender who believes in it, and an allexpenses paid trip to Venezuela can sure help you believe in it. I recently reached the final of an international cocktail competition for Black Cow Vodka (a fact I’m dying to disseminate) and after talking to customers about it I realised they had no idea these events even existed. This is something that surprises me for the simple reason that a lot of effort and funding goes into these events. The cocreator of Black Cow Vodka Jason Barber specifically divulged to me that the competitions that they run are few and far between mainly because of the monetary cost. Despite this though, they are never really marketed as a spectator event, or even circulated to a wider audience of consumers. So, my question to spirit producers is “wouldn’t you want a wider sphere of publicity?” And to the public, “wouldn’t you want to see an iron chef type event that got you drunk and involves juggling bottles?”.

DEREK GRIFFITHS
Driving Miss Daisy comes to Theatre Royal Brighton in September, starring Derek Griffiths and Dame Sîan Phillips. After winning over hearts in children’s television, and then again in Coronation Street, Derek Griffiths talks to Victoria Nangle about his return to the stage.
You have been so much a part of so many people’s childhoods, due to your involvement with children’s television. Is there an intimacy with your audience, from that early trust and familiarity? Yes, there was a strong trust indeed, which I’ve always been humbled by. Because of my long association with theatre, many kids who had never ever been in a theatre ever, would come round to the stage door to talk with me of their new found experience. Particularly, when I was at Stratford on Avon, kids who said they had grown up with me, wanted to see how irreverent I would be with Shakespeare. A few people have mentioned to me that yours was the first black face that they saw on television, when they saw you on Play School. Were you aware of this kind of an impact you had at the time?
you decided to take on the role? No, I never even gave the political side a thought. It is a gentle piece about the growing bond between two very different people, it should be a heartwarming reminder to people that love still exists in the world against all odds. And do you think the current political climate affects how you play Hoke? The current political climate would not affect Hoke. He is an uneducated man, but with a rich regard to life and people. What do you most enjoy about returning to live theatre from television? Working on TV has always been a challenge to me, as enjoyable as it is, you cannot see an audience smile... or laugh.
“ The door at Corrie has been left open. So... who knows ” The impact for me was as in theatre, did they laugh? No one that I can remember mentioned my blackness. I just hoped I did the job well. You’ve recently left Corrie’s cobbles – how did you find being involved with such a British institution? Corrie was a joy to do, such a great bunch of people, admin and cast. Are you likely to return to Coronation Street after this tour – what are your plans? The door at Corrie has been left open. So... who knows. It’s a politically hot time to tour ‘Driving Miss Daisy’, what with the tensions currently occurring Stateside, the divisions that are appearing in the shadow of Trump, in contrast to what appeared to be Obama’s best efforts. Was this something you considered especially when
Of the many programmes you’ve been involved with aimed at younger views, which was your favourite and why? Heads and Tails, Bod and Magical Mysteries, as I had complete freedom writing the music. I heard that you are a keen sailor: do you think you’ll be taking advantage of the Brighton Marina while you’re in town? I have bought two boats from Brighton Marina in my time, but sailing is now crewing on other folks boats, it’s cheaper. Driving Miss Daisy, Theatre Royal Brighton, Mon 18 – Sat 23 September 2017, 7.45pm & matinees at 2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday (captioned performance on Thursday evening), £16.90 – £48.90, www.atgtickets.com

f there is an area of cuisine that I am truly unfamiliar with it has to be Caribbean. It stems from a disappointing meal way way back in time. I was served rice and peas which was truly dull, plantain that was floury and bland and blackened jerk chicken which was simply burnt. It tainted my view for over twenty years and there has been little here to change my views since. Well that is until yesterday when, hungry from a BBC radio interview, I wandered down North Street and stumbled into Bus Stop. I had promised to go there at the last food festival, but had simply forgotten, so now seemed a good time. I was alone and I prefer not to review alone but I decided to give it a whirl anyway and ordered two dishes from the specials menu and a jug of iced tap water. I know, no booze, well it was lunch time and I do have a modicum of restraint.
“ Whoever makes this hot sauce is an artist ” My first choice was posted on a board outside, crisp coconut prawns with sweet chili sauce. It was one of those dishes that would either be brilliant or deeply disappointing, by which I mean a low grade product probably bought in frozen. I have to report that it was very good, good and generous too with a plate full of fat prawns in a good coconut coating. I’m not guaranteeing that it was prepared from scratch but I suspect it was or at least coated in house. Anyway, I liked them, the prawns were tasty and properly textured, neither hard nor squishy, and the chili sauce was pretty good too, not too sweet and with a good punch of heat. Not that a punch of heat was going to be a problem when they delivered me a pot of their own hot sauce. Now I know people who like a hot sauce that is tongue seeringly spicy and mind dulling. That’s not for me, I like heat but not so hot that I cannot taste the other ingredients. There is an art to making a hot sauce that delivers just that and whoever makes this hot sauce is an artist. I loved the depth of flavour, the refreshing citrus hit that made it clean on the palate and the bite of chili heat that was intense but not a taste destroyer. My waiter suggested a try a little on the side of my plate, which I did, but I soon went back for more. It worked perfectly with my seared swordfish and mango salad too, the fish cooked just right, moist in the centre and beautifully seasoned on the outside. It was a generous dish, plenty of fish and a salad that was not pretending to be a garnish. I will certainly return and try the pork chop next time, it sounded delicious but too much for a bright sunny day. Bus Stop, 99 North Rd, Brighton, BN1 1YE 01273 623143

ith the ease of watching films, not only at the cinema but online at one of the many new media platforms, it is no wonder that for many people their knowledge of a play is not through live theatre but from one of the many screen adaptations that so often

“ Live theatre is an entirely different experience to the cinema ” follow on from critical stage acclaim. The instances are too many to name but amongst them has to be Driving Miss Daisy. production comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton this September. Starring Dame Siân Phillips as Daisy and Derek Griffiths as Hoke and directed by Richard Beecham, this is the story of an elderly widow Daisy Werthan who crashes her car one day in 1948. Her son hires
her a chauffeur, an African American named Hoke Colburn. Daisy and Hoke’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, but as times change across a 25 year backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound and life altering friendship blossoms. Dame Siân Phillips has enjoyed a dazzling career which spans more than seven decades. From her multi award winning performance in I, Claudius to the epic film Dune, from a Tony nominated performance of Marlene on Broadway to Cabaret in the West End. RSC actor and legendary presenter, Derek Griffiths’ numerous West End credits include the original production of Beauty and the Beast in which he originated the role of Lumière and the Child Catcher in the West End run of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium. Live theatre is an entirely different experience to cinema, one that demands the full attention of the audience and when that works it is the most exciting of entertainment experiences. And with the recent civil unrest in the USA and the emergence once again of a racist far right community, the lessons to be learnt from Uhry’s impressive drama are ones that sadly need to be reaffirmed. This opportunity to see such an important work of theatre with such an impressive cast is one that simply is not to be missed. www.atgtickets.com/brighton* 0844 871 7650* *Booking fees apply. REVIEW Mamma Mia!
A
ugust weather getting you down? Try this show for a burst of energy. It fizzes with the vitality of ABBA’s greatest songs and some superturbo dance routines. Don’t expect the quality cast to sing exactly like the Swedish originals, it’s a live show and all the more exciting for that. It’s a charming story and the romance is so poignant. The powergirls lead the plot and all the men have Chippendale physiques with saucy bagpipes and gymnastic courtship but it’s a show for everyone, girls, boys, young or old and all in between. Pure joy: the MUST SEE summer show! Brighton Centre, 16 August 2017

What was it again?
I
hate it when I think I’ve forgotten to do something. You know, that feeling where you were about to do a thing, then got distracted and are left with the impression that there’s a task still to be done but no memory of what it actually is. It’s a not infrequent feeling for me. I try to battle it with the reassurance that I’m not a brain surgeon and no one is going to die if I forget something. That and deep steady breathing. It’s probably a contributing factor as to why I’m not the easiest to pin down to commit to do anything or to be anywhere. I write whatever is finally scheduled in my paper diary. In pen.
“ That feeling of having mislaid my train of thought ” In my battle against the dropped ball amongst those juggled and kept in the air, I do like lists. I have one at my desk at work with my main tasks bullet pointed, written on the last leaf of a PostIt pad and stuck into the back of a note book. It’s been there for about six months, with occasional additions made, just so that in the middle of an ad hoc maelstrom of interview opportunities and lunch orders I can double check that I haven’t lost track of any of the main things I do each week. I consult it whenever I get that feeling of having mislaid my train of thought – and it helps. Other ‘aidemémoires’ include lists in Notes on my iPhone, remembering the number of things I had to buy when I go into a
shop – a kind of hierarchy of memory if you like: I need three things, bread, milk and... mint Poppets – and putting reminders in plain sight. Obviousness is not an asset to be overlooked. My bedside table holds books I want to read and hayfever tablets I need to take so that when the pollen count is high I don’t accidentally wake myself up snoring. Go to bed, look to turn the light off – bang! See the tablets and take one. Essentially though, what I need to remember is that when I start to forget things – it means I have too many things to remember. Comedian Daniel Kitson had a good response to this. He said he always phoned up his Mum for her cake recipe. She asked why he didn’t ever remember it himself, the number of times he called. His response: I keep that information in your head. So I shall start keeping things to be remembered in other people’s heads instead of mine.
