Interviewing those we hold dear
Self love
I
I
was a little nervous about the interview on page four. The Magnetic Fields are my thirdmost listened to band of the last ten years (according to last.fm): they have a fantastic back catalogue and their best album, 69 Love Songs, is an inimitable work filled with memorable melodies. I've interviewed plenty of people before but this was a phone call that I was particularly personally invested in. If it didn't go well, would I still enjoy The Magnetic Fields’ music in the same way? Thankfully, happily, the conversation was friendly, and Stephin Merritt was as insightful, considered, and intelligent as you would expect from his music. Stephin was perfectly polite and welcoming too, and certainly didn’t seem the dour or difficult personality that some have suggested over the years. The focus on personality and clickbait in music journalism can be vacuous and irritating anyway: it doesn’t matter what Ryan Adams and Father John Misty think of each other, for example. But I mention it here because it raises interesting questions about the form of the interview itself. If you read the full interview at thelatest.co.uk then you might think that Merritt is being disagreeable when we discuss touring vs residencies for example, but if you listened to the conversation you would hear a perfectly amiable exchange and an interesting discussion. Interviewees aren't obliged to settle into the interviewer's mold, or their preferred style of communication. I can only assume that previous interviewers might have objected to some polite objections, or misunderstood Stephin in some way. This is all irrelevant noise of course. Read the interview to pique your interest (hopefully), listen to the records, and go to the shows.

may have spoken about this before, but it's a topic that's close to my heart and a multifaceted issue that could be approached from a multitude of angles, so excuse me while I explore a new side of the subject. Self love. To me, quite possibly the most important thing in the world, a tenet of my existence and a guiding principle that acts as a lighthouse when I'm lost in the turbulent seas of life and emotion. And, unfortunately, also one of the most misunderstood and intentionally vilified matters in contemporary society. Take a moment to think how many industries would go bankrupt overnight if everyone in the world woke up tomorrow morning loving themselves. Once you realise how many companies rely on your self consciousness to make their money you can begin to chip away at this blatant and savage lie that loving yourself isn't right or ok. These industries have propagated a misconception that to love yourself is synonymous with arrogance. By doing this they corrupt the concept of self love and keep everyone in a perpetual state of self loathing, anxiety and fear, putting you in the perfect state to be receptive to their empty materialistic products they advertise as being able to fill the gaping hole in you left by your lack of self love. Don't misunderstand me, I am by no means advocating for a world free of industries like clothing and make up and others of that ilk. But what I am a firm advocate for is a world in which greedy capitalistic corporations do not prey on the fragility and vulnerability of a society that has not yet embraced the transformational power of unconditional love for oneself and everyone else. By capitalising on this they amplify and reinforce the idea that you are not the innately perfect and beautiful being that you are as soon as you are born. They steal away the truth of your reality and replace it with a painful lie that you are not worthwhile. It's time to stop believing them.

THE MAGNETIC FIELDS Stephin Merritt of resplendently melodic band The Magnetic Fields spoke exclusively to Joe Fuller, ahead of their theatrical Brighton Dome shows. To read the full interview, head to thelatest.co.uk. Could you tell us about the 50 Song Memoir album that the two evenings will be pulling from? 50 Song Memoir is an autobiographical, five disc set of entirely true songs about me, which is something that I usually would never do. I am not an autobiographical songwriter. Some people write songs about their life. I do not. I like the decision to split it into five discs. It reminds me of EPs and how they’re easy to dip in and out of. Yes, when I did 69 Love Songs, it seemed like one hour per disc was perfectly reasonable but nowadays, one hour is forever. Especially if you expect people to listen to the lyrics. Without something to look at, it’s hard for people to absorb information from listening, nowadays. They’re expecting information from something glowing and warm in their hands. But for the show we actually have a huge, pretty projection screen with appropriate visuals that help keep the focus on the lyrics. Will that include videos like A Cat Called Dionysus’ animations, or is it a range of things? It’s a range of things. The Dionysus video is more literal
than many of them are. But we tried to have the projections have different relations to the music, rather than all of them acting out the lyrics or something. Will you just be playing the album on the evenings or will there be other fan favourites too? (Laughs) We’re just playing the album. The album is two and a half hours long. What with banter in between and changing instruments, it would be painfully long if we also played The Book of Love. And we don’t do encores. We’re just playing the album. (Strange noise on Joe’s end of the phone call.) Is that a bird?
“ Honest
musicians admit that they don’t enjoy touring ”
Yes, a seagull. In Brighton there’s a lot of seagulls. Have you been to Brighton before? I have: we went once on tour. I have not been to Brighton on vacation. Bookending this tour I’m actually going to do vacationing, which is something I never do. Last
time I was on vacation, I went to Costa Rica in 1998. So it’s been 19 years since I had a vacation. We’re starting the tour in Edinburgh and ending it in London. I’m going to spend almost a week in Edinburgh beforehand, and a week in London afterwards. I wish I could also spend a week in Brighton. I really like Brighton. It has really good food, even. Good food, and good pubs too. In Kemptown there’s some good gay bars as well if you did want to write, although if you’re on vacation I guess you might not want to be songwriting. Oh no I don’t know how to turn that off actually. When I was in Costa Rica, I was songwriting on the beach. I imagine I will be hanging out in gay bars and writing songs for a few hours every day. It’s a hard habit to break. The United States equivalent of Brighton is Provincetown in Massachusetts, a few hours from Boston. It’s a traditional vacation spot which has become especially focused on gay vacationers and is also an art colony too. After the vacationing, do you have any plans for you or The Magnetic Fields?
Well we go to Australia in October. I am not thinking beyond the tour. We haven’t actually been to Continental Europe, except one festival in Barcelona and it sure would make sense to play Scandinavia and Germany and Spain and Portugal like we usually do. Portugal is the place in the world where we are most popular, for some reason. Not the United States, but Portugal. And we haven’t played there which doesn’t make any sense. So I’m hoping that the tour will get longer. You’re excited about the tour then? Well I didn’t say I was excited about the tour (laughs). I don’t enjoy touring. Honest musicians admit that they don’t enjoy touring. Except… I was just talking to Laurie Anderson backstage at a benefit and she said that she loves touring. And now that she’s alone she loves the opportunity to meet new people that touring affords. The last thing that I want to do is meet new people that I’m probably never going to see again. What fun is that? The Magnetic Fields: 50 Song Memoir, Brighton Dome Concert Hall, 78 September, 7.15pm, £20/£24 per Part or £43 combined, brightondome.org, 01273 709709

hat better way to welcome the autumn months than to watch a brand new production of the unmissable thriller Deathtrap, a wickedly enjoyable who’lldoit? Deathtrap, a truly satisfying spine chiller that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, visits Theatre Royal Brighton for one week only from Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 September and features TV stars Paul Bradley (Holby City and EastEnders) and BAFTA nominee Jessie Wallace (EastEnders and Redwater). Jessie last visited the city in March last year starring in the sell out Peter James production of The Perfect Murder. Sidney Bruhl (Bradley), a once successful writer of stage thrillers, is in the grip of chronic writer’s block. Out of the blue, young playwright Clifford Anderson sends Bruhl one of the only two copies of his brilliant new whodunit, Deathtrap. Desperate to set Broadway alight once more, Sidney spies his
chance to invite Clifford to his remote country home. Oh, and to bring the only other copy of Deathtrap with him! If Bruhl can kill the newcomer and pass the play off as his own, he could once again be the toast of Broadway. Written by the award winning playwright and author Ira Levin (Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives and Critics Choice), Deathtrap is directed by the newly appointed Artistic Director Designate of Nottingham Playhouse: Adam Penford (The Boys in the Band, A Small Family Business and Committee at the Donmar Warehouse).
“ Deathtrap continues to hold the
record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history ”
Deathtrap is a masterpiece of suspense and continues to hold the record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history. It has also been made into a smash hit film starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. here’s no denying that chef Michael Bremner is a star, 64 Degrees is rated 16th in the UK’s top 100 restaurants and he was a winner on BBC’s Great British Menu. So it comes as no surprise that he is branching out. At 64 he was king of the small plate, at Murmur it’s very different, large plates and very delicious large plates they are too. I was joined for lunch by Mr L and Mr K and we were in the mood for a spot of al fresco delight, but rain stopped play and we dined in the doorway of his stylish new venture. He had already told me that he wanted to do something very different, create somewhere that he would like to go with his kids, that said they are very discerning young ladies. The menu is pretty small, a welcome sign of fresh dishes to come and there were a couple of very appealing specials, but in the end we went with the list, Mr L & K starting with fresh tagliatelle with 64º egg, parmesan and fresh truffle. It looked, and smelled amazing. I chose the short rib skewers and loved the tender meat, brilliant pickles and tasty mayo. I was glad too that we had some of the amazing bread left for mopping purposes. Mr K had the lamb rump with basil, fregola, charred and pickled courgette. He has a healthy appetite, useful when served such a generous plate of food, there’s certainly nothing mimsy about a Murmur portion, and he scoffed the lot loving every mouthfull. Mr L did the same with his cod, mussels and butter beans. I looked on with envy, it really was a fabulous looking dish with perfectly cooked cod, falling into pearlescent flakes. I chose the ox tongue, a variant of his BBC winning dish, simplified slightly but to no ill effect. The hockey puck sized portion of tongue was incredible, truly divine, the salad of roquette and pickled shallot a perfect refreshing foil and a very neccessary one. I say this because the mash was killer rich, almost bordering on butter thickened with potato – and it was superb, unmissably good. I think butter should be one of your five a day and Mr B seems to think the same. We should have stopped there but the temptations continued, a chocolate and raspberry pudding with vanilla icecream, a perfect lemon tart – incredible pastry, served with yoghurt sorbet, and for me a panacotta with strawberries. The wine line list is short but expertly chosen with some real treats. In fact the whole thing is a treat and I plan to return very soon for breakfast, lunch and dinner too. Another gem from Michael Bremner and his team.

STAGE Mata Hari: Female Spy at Shoreham’s Ropetackle Arts Centre
T
here’s Bond and Bourne, George Smiley and countless other fictional spies and nearly all of them are male and figures of pure invention that have fuelled TV and cinema for years. And then there is Mata Hari, again the subject of films and TV, but the difference being that Mata Hari, or Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod is not a fiction but a real woman. Mata Hari: Dutch exotic dancer, lover, confidante, contradiction and liar. Executed by firing squad in 1917 and regarded the most notorious female spy in history… or was she? 100 years after her execution and inspired by her own words, this enthralling new play tells Mata Hari’s fascinating story: from growing up in the Netherlands to her marriage in the Dutch East Indies, becoming an acclaimed exotic dancer to her involvement in the Great War.

being a double agent by the French authorities. But is her story one of setup? Did she
really deserve to die? Only you can decide. Using Mata Hari’s own words, performer Katharine Mary gives a powerful portrayal of this truly compelling woman. Mata Hari has inspired countless films, musicals and TV shows, but there is only one true story, her story: the world’s first, and most fascinating, femme fatale. Ropetackle spokesman Mark Phillips said: “It’s a story straight out of a novel, at least you’d be forgiven for thinking so. Except it’s not – like all good stories, this one is true.” Mata Hari: Female Spy is written and directed by Gavin Robertson. Performed by Katharine Mary. A
ny selfrespecting music lover will see plenty of great gigs, but moments of perfection in the live arena are genuinely rare. This was one of those treasured occasions. Playing a stripped back, minimalist set, Kurt Wagner and the current incarnation of his band masterfully took the audience on a spectacularly beautiful and unique journey. Playing material from their most recent chilled, electronic inspired album FLOTUS and reimagining old songs in the same vein, everything from the venue and atmosphere to the faultless performance and crystal clear sound came together perfectly. An absolutely peerless work of art, and an absolute pleasure to witness.
