Gin as a new trend

O

I

h boy! Twin Peaks is a helluva show. I wrote about the new series a few weeks ago but have to return to it. What David Lynch and Mark Frost have achieved with this truly unique combination of humour, warmth, terror, beauty, horror, magic, darkness, light, and the inimitable Dale Cooper beggars belief. One of the things I love about Twin Peaks now is how much richer the world is thanks to the 18 part new season. Whilst we previously had the first two seasons and the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, these felt like they were cut down and abandoned, with heartbreakingly unresolved plotlines. Don’t expect clear resolutions of course, but we now have a fuller saga to share with friends and family. I'm so envious of those who haven't leapt in yet. You get the short, tight, gripping first season that for many people defines Twin Peaks. The second season famously meanders (with 21 episodes to the first season's eight) with some less focused material, but still contains some brilliant new characters (the pine weasel is my favourite) and some fantastic episodes such as the Lynchdirected finale 'The Path To The Black Lodge'. Fire Walk With Me was underappreciated and underseen upon its release after the series finished, but the bleaker, more serious film is expertly crafted (with some of composer Angelo Badalamenti's best work), and is also an important part of the complete puzzle. It is essential viewing before the third season, which feels tonally closer to Lynch's later films, as well as a response to the sex and violence viewers are accustomed to from boxset television. So don't expect such a rosehued experience as the original series, but you can look forward to a beguiling conclusion to the best televisual saga of all time.

t may be completely idle for me to say this to those who have set foot in a bar in the last year, but gin is a very trendy beverage right now. We have just emerged out of Sussex Gin Week here so I want to talk about the meteoric rise of the quintessentially British, juniper driven phenomenon, that is gin. Although it’s deeply entrenched in our culture thanks to our famous penchant for the drink, it’s a Dutch spirit (and spawned the phrase Dutch courage). It was only later that it was brought to England and started a fullon furore amongst us Brits. We desired it to such an extent that we even stuck it in our quinine based malaria medications or “tonics” and created one of the most quaffable beverages ever. Move forward to today and gin and tonics are one of the bestselling drinks on the market. Primarily this is because the chemical structures of both ingredients are of a similar molecular shape and attract each other, shielding the bitter taste of each liquid, but I don’t want to bore you with gin facts and science. What I would like to talk about is the fact that once again gin has the British public in a furore, and why that might be. For a start, I think it is most important to look at the trend that preceded it, which was vodka. It seemed for a while that there was a new vodka every day from either a special place or associated with a new celebrity, such as P Diddy (Cîroc), Dan Aykroyd (Crystal Head) or Donald Trump (imaginatively…Trump Vodka… sigh). It all got a bit boring. In steps gin, with a deep array of subtle flavours that are far more interesting than its predecessor’s blunt instrument flavour variations. I want to make it clear that I am not saying vodka is bad, but I am saying it tastes simple and that is why gin is getting ahead. As well as this, it is sensible to realise that the generation of people with the spending money in this industry probably had a youth of necking down the simple stuff and now their palates have changed, they probably like olives too. THE BEST MAN How far would you go to be the most powerful man in the world?

G

ore Vidal’s political thriller, The Best Man, heads to Theatre Royal Brighton for one week only from Monday 25 – Saturday 30 September. One of the UK’s best loved actors, Martin Shaw, leads a star studded cast in The Best Man. Best known for his TV roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently, The Professionals and currently on our TV screens in Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling, he returns to the stage after his West End triumphs which include An Ideal Husband, Twelve Angry Men, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and A Man for All Seasons. Jeff Fahey, American movie star whose films include The Lawnmower Man and TV series Lost costars alongside BAFTA award winning Gemma Jones, best known for her roles in Bridget Jones’ Diary, Spooks and Harry Potter.

“ Who in the end will prove to be ‘The Best Man’? ” Joining them is Jack Shepherd, whose extensive career includes his celebrated roles in Wycliffe and Bill Brand; Glynis Barber, best known for Dempsey and Makepeace, Night and Day and EastEnders; and Honeysuckle Weeks and Anthony Howell who costarred alongside Michael Kitchen as Samantha Stewart and Paul Milner in Foyle’s War. Two opposing presidential party candidates are neck and neck in an unscrupulous battle for the nomination. The only thing that separates the exSecretary of State and his populist opponent is an endorsement from a respected exPresident. But where does compromise end and corruption begin? And who in the end will prove to be ‘The Best Man’? LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Born into a distinguished political family, Gore Vidal was a prolific writer known for the waspish wit, which peppered his essays, novels, screenplays and Broadway plays. Among his most famous works are Myra Breckinridge and Lincoln. The Best Man premiered on Broadway in 1960 and was nominated for six Tony Awards, including ‘Best Play’. Vidal adapted it into a film with the same title in 1964 starring Henry Fonda, Cliff Robertson and Lee Tracy, who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the crafty exPresident. The play received a major revival on Broadway in 2012 starring James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury, and earned two Tony award nominations including ‘Best Revival of a Play’. ‘A sophisticated, elegant and damnably entertaining play’ The New Yorker ‘The Best Man makes you wish that Vidal were writing the dialogue for the presidential debates’ NY Times ‘Gore Vidal’s The Best Man is a winner – extraordinarily fresh, witty, sharp and relevant’ NY Daily News

OctoberBest is back

O

ctoberBest is back for its second exciting year. From 1st15th October, the city's top 20 restaurants (as compiled by Brighton's Best Restaurants) will offer special £20 menus* including dishes and dining experiences created especially for the festival. In addition, this year’s OctoberBest will encompass a roster of oneoff culinary events with special guests including renowned cocktail guru Mr Lyan and leading food writer Tim Hayward. The battle to win the Best OctoberBest Dish award – which will be announced at the third annual Brighton’s Best Restaurants ceremony in February 2018 – is fierce. Current titleholders The Chilli Pickle are attempting to top their mighty pork knuckle vindaloo with ‘Al and D’s Toddy Shop’, a take on the food served in working men’s social shacks in Alleppey in Kerala and will include a platter of fresh fish, curries, fiery snacks and tender coconut home brew. REVIEW The Noise Next Door

L

ocal Brighton lads "The Noise Next Door" began their show asking punters for examples of bad things to do. Provocative ideas including punching a dwarf and naming a child Sphincter, were then skillfully woven in to an improv rap causing raucous laughter. The troupe consists of Charlie Granville, Matt Grant, Tom Livingstone and Sam Pacelli. What they lacked in imitating accents, they made up for with good humour. Any lapses were quickly obscured by funnier material. Randomly selecting a punter’s text messages and making a sketch about family ice skating was comic gold. Guest comics Pippa Evans and Keith Farnan held their own in this fastpaced improv show. Komedia, 13 September 2017

Holly Herndon experiments with the timings and textures of pop and electronic music in enveloping ways. ‘Chorus’ for example is a skittering, sparse but punchy track, opening with what sounds like separate ideas and fragments, which then coalesce into a more coherent work towards its conclusion. For any fan of electronic or innovative, forwardthinking music, this gig is an absolute must.

Attenborough Centre For The Creative Arts, 21 September, 8pm, £12£17

Ryoji Ikeda uses mathematical models to generate music and projections, resulting in stunning audio visual shows. This performance (part of Brighton Digital Festival) is a great opportunity to see a talented visual artist in what is described as an “immersive club show”.

Mark Watson is known for trying things a little out of the ordinary – this tour he’s directed by his initials and he’s visiting places that begin with either M or W – this time it’s Worthing (another will be on a ferry on the river Mersey!). He’ll be mixing up some classic comedy material with some newer ideas. Check out our interview with Mark online at tinyurl.com/y6v3f7kt.

Building happy memories out of sadness

A

few days back I went along to a memorial service, a celebration of a life ended and, for all of the people there no doubt, ended far too soon. It was a lively and joyous occasion despite the obvious sadness that we were all feeling, an afternoon filled with beautiful music and touching words, words tinged with both sadness and with humour. I was there to join in the celebration even though I had known the departed only a short time. A short time maybe but long enough to realise that this man was a very special person, a passionate lover of life and fighter against injustice and a great lover of music and of the choir that he was so much a part of. I listened as his colleagues in the Rainbow Chorus gathered themselves, through their tears, to fill the afternoon with some of the music that he loved. I listened that afternoon to the people who were most important in his life talking about him, his achievements, his foibles and habits and I came away filled with a sad regret, a regret that I had only met him a few times over the last two years or so. Funerals and memorials are strange things, they act in a way to assist that thing known as closure. I’m not sure what closure is meant to really achieve. When my father died the last thing I wanted was closure. I wanted him to live on, not to be forgotten

“ A rounded out picture of a rounded man ”

and if my grief was something that needed to be closed down then perhaps I would, in time, start to forget him. No, closure is not for me. But through that grief I have been able to channel joy, the precious memories that I hold of dad, his foibles and his habits, good and bad, live on because I have not closed off that memory. I have some of his things around the place, one of his mallets, a beautiful set of wood carving chisels, drawings that he did as a child. They are all part of my every day life and when I look at them they make me smile. That Sunday afternoon, as I sat and listened to his near ones talking about this precious life lost I realised that the best use of a memorial is to set in time and in hearts a life remembered. The man I am writing about is, not was but is John Kernaghan, a man of passion and integrity and humour and love. Some of this I had measured for myself in those brief meetings with him when we would discuss music and laugh about life. Now I have a fuller picture of the man, the work that he did, his achievements, his family and his childhood. It’s a rounded out picture of a rounded man and I thank his partner and his family and friends for the opportunity to share in their celebration.
