What Remains of Edith Finch

Stepping on leaves

I

W

have been a cat, a shark, and most chillingly, a boy on a swing before his untimely demise. Those are not past lives, but a scintillating video game called What Remains of Edith Finch. The game is a narrativefocused walking simulator in the vein of Firewatch and Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, and when you go awandering, the game has a mysterious, supernatural aura about it. It's one of those experiences you don't want to explain to people too much, for fear of spoiling it. You play as the titular Edith Finch, a 17 year old who is exploring her family's house. The pause screen includes a drawing of the family tree, from which one can immediately glean that something's not right in the Finch household, with the majority of the clan dying far too young, and far too often. You roam through a large house, which is filled with beautifully designed passageways and trap doors, to gain an understanding of curious characters: one room might be a child's spaceship fantasy while another is a hermit's bunker. The most beautiful part of the game are the 'flashbacks' to the family member's memories, or fantasies, or something. That's where the cat, shark and child and come in: it's a thrilling moment the first time you change from a traditional human perspective to that of a prowling cat. It sounds simple but works brilliantly in practice, playing with the convention of player, character and role in a video game. The voice acting and writing are superb too, and I look forward to entering the strange world of Edith Finch again in the future. I suggest waiting for the next discount on Xbox One, PS4 or PC, then trusting me and buying it. Don't read anything more for fear of spoilers, just play it. PLAY IT. PPPLLLAAAYYY IIITTT.

hen I was younger I’d never have said that September was my favourite month. September meant back to school and back to school was the most dreaded phrase of every kid’s childhood: the end of freedom, the downtrodden trudge back to the classroom prison, the beginning of the long wait until next summer. School cast a dark cloud over September that coloured everything a dreary dull grey. So it’s only in recent years that, being free from the mandatory madness of school, that I’ve been able to look upon September with a fresh pair of eyes and appreciate the gorgeous tones the season has to offer. In spring I wrote about the particular magic rife in the transient seasons between winter and summer, the seasonal corridors that ferry us between scorching hot and bitterly cold. The mild days and the breezy afternoons of September reflect this perfectly. Without the desperate desire to plunge yourself into an icy cold bath to cool down, there’s an undeniable aura of relaxation bound up with autumn. It’s a calming atmosphere that’s embodied in the slow, tranquil fall of the leaves, a rhythm that we all unconsciously sync to as we wind down from the frantic fun of summer and prepare to curl up into our winter hibernation. All I can say is that it’s a true shame that autumn is sandwiched between the summer holidays and Halloween and Christmas. It means that a lot of the time it’s overlooked as the world indulges in downtime between the two periods of merrymaking. In our mind’s eye we romanticise long hot summer days and pine after the everelusive white Christmas so much so that we tend to ignore the stunningly beautiful transition that takes place inbetween. Each year we are treated to a natural spectacle as the trees set themselves alight with the colours of fire and the world turns orange and gold. So before all the leaves have fallen make sure to stop and take a moment to appreciate the magic of autumn. And don’t forget to step on every crunchy leaf you see!

Panto season is nearly here and to get the best it’s time to book those seats

F

or many of us the first experience we will have had of live theatre will be a pantomime or a Christmas show, and what an experience. There’s no denying that panto will have been the motivation behind a lifetime of theatre going, it certainly was for me. From the word go I fell in love with the spectacle, the glamour, glitter and fun that a panto brought into my life and I know that I’m not alone. To this day pantomimes and Christmas shows are the ideal place for families to celebrate the festive season and to introduce the young to the theatre, after all, what other shows would encourage you to join in and shout at the cast. This year there is plenty to choose from, from the traditional to the modern. For years The Gardner Art Centre staged a series of wonderful Christmas shows penned by the marvellous Mike Carter, now he is back at what is now knows as ACCA with a new interpretation of Pinocchio directed by James Weisz – expect lots of fun and games! Over in Worthing their seasonal offerings include the wonderful Snow White, poisoned apples, wicked queens and a dashing prince played by pop star Chesney Hawkes at the Pavilion Theatre, what’s not to love, and why not take a deep breath and enjoy Father Christmas come up trumps at The Connaught, need I say more? If it’s tradition you love then it doesn’t come much better than ShorehambySeas’ annual panto at the Ropetackle, and this year it's Dick Whittington, a classic show suitable for all the family. In Crawley, The Hawth have a long and acclaimed track record for staging some of the best pantos around and this year promises to be as brilliant as ever. They too are giving life to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the star of the show is TV’s Stephen Mulhern. In Brighton the Dome has a wide array of seasonal fun but at the heart of the festive season will be Ballet Theatre UK’s dazzling production of The Snow Queen. It might be too soon to break out the tinsel but it’s definitely time to plan that seasonal theatre treat and get booking. 4 | LATEST 7

The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio: Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts

J

ames Weisz and Patric Kearns will be bringing their panto to the site of the Gardner Arts Centre, Brighton, now Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, this Christmas. 'Pinocchio' will mark the first time since the Gardner Arts Centre closed that a Christmas pantomime has been held on the site. Between 1987 and 2005, Mike Carter and MCN Productions were responsible for producing the Christmas show each year at the Gardner Arts Centre, seen by thousands of local people. James Weisz comments: “The new team and facilities are top notch. These productions are for everyone in the Brighton & Hove area, so we’re very much hoping we’ll get plenty of local support”.

“ A marvellous mixture of comedy,

magical storytelling, toetapping numbers and circus ”

Pinocchio is James' fifth pantomime in Brighton, since launching in 2013 with Cinderella. A marvellous mixture of comedy, magical storytelling, toetapping numbers and circus, the show promises to delight all ages. Details about the show: Brighton's only professional pantomime returns with a highflying adaptation of the muchloved fairy tale. One night Geppetto, a puppetmaker, wishes upon a star and life changes forever. His most beloved creation, Pinocchio, springs to life and with that, the amazing adventures begin. From the director of The Wind in The Willows; Beauty & The Beast; The Jungle Book; and George's Marvellous Medicine. T

he Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival offered so many chances to enjoy the excellent culinary scene we can now enjoy, it would be hard to declare one event better than another – but one did stand out. For me it was easy to see why, couple the excellent sparkling Sussex wines made at the Ridgeview Estate with the inventive genius of chef Matt Gillan and you are on a winner. At Pike and Pine we were in for a real treat, that started with perfect canapés and a cocktail using that superb wine. It would be cruel to list every single wine but Mardi Roberts and Tom Surgey certainly didn’t skimp on telling us about the different wines or on filling our glasses. Nothing is more disappointing than a wine flight that proves to be a series of shortlived sips, these guys were more than generous, even lifting a wine from the family collection that is no longer available, now that was a treat! Gillan is generous too, his inventive dishes are complex, fascinating and satisfying. Every element earns its place and comes in a quantity that allows you to go back and try a second mouthful, if not more. I’m frustrated by dishes in spartan proportions with no chance of getting to grips with it, more tease than taste. The entire concept of dinner was the journey from root to fruit, exploring the minerality of the terroir, the earthiness of roots, freshness of shoots and leaves and finally the fruit as it ripens. Gillan is a genius, not one of the dishes served failed to deliver. Scallops served with radish showed the simplicity of a perfectly cooked shellfish and the versatility of the humble radish. Duck and beetroot was a stunning exploration of sweet beets and the intense flavour of delicately cured duck and rich liver parfait, pickled mushrooms and a stunning beetroot granita. Next salsify, artichoke chicken and walnuts, a divine mix of textures and earthy flavours that almost silenced us, just murmurs of delight. Our next dish included incredible cod with a crab beignet that deceived me, so rich and musky was the white meat that I assumed some of the dark flesh had been included, I was wrong, it had been infused with a hefty crab stock, something I must try myself. The addition of charred leek, bitter sharp lime spheres, seaweed crisp and salty fingers lifted everything to extraordinary heights. On then to venison, rare loin and intensely flavoursome slow cooked haunch all complimented by pickled elderberries and grapes, squash and pumpkin seeds and chestnuts – heaven! Then a stunning predessert illustrating the ripening of the fruit from green to deep red – were we going to peak too soon? Well no, the dessert proper was a kiss goodbye to the end of summer and hello to the rich mellow fruitfulness of autumn with red cherries, plums… all served with Ridgeview’s Rosé De Noirs, poured from magnums in a coup de theatre befitting of so splendid an evening. Ridgeview and Gillan, a marriage made in Sussex and worthy of heaven.

t may well be closing in on panto season, a scary thought for some of us, but it’s never too soon to introduce youngsters to the creative world of live theatre. In a world dominated by digital arts we may well have turned our attention away from the fact that digital arts must be fed by human interaction: for as long as man has needed to be entertained live performance has fuelled almost every subsequent entertainment format, where after all would cinema and TV be without theatre? At the Theatre Royal Brighton, in addition to their fabulous productions on stage, their Creative Learning programme offers a whole host of exciting, unusual and engaging workshops and events offstage for children, young people and families. Here are some of their events that we hope will help you to introduce your young ones to the world of live theatre:

iFi Wars is one of the most innovative and distinctive shows I've ever seen. Comedian Steve McNeil led the proceedings, while Rob Sedgebeer coordinated the technological side on stage, ensuring that the whole audience could take part in video games on their smartphones. We took part in a wide variety of games, including a Track and Field type activity where we had to tap our button feet as fast as possible, or impressive large scale games of Bomberman and Doom. McNeil was an engaging compere, skillfully whipping up enthusiasm in the upforit crowd, all the more impressive due to the sad scarcity of bums on seats. The core concept of the show is strong and has a rosy future ahead of it: everyone likes a fun game, and WiFi Wars had a remarkable hit rate of rollicking video game experiences. Rarely has taking part in a live show environment felt so fun and so natural. The Old Market, 18 September

Brighton Dome Concert Hall, 8 October, 2.45pm, £12£38

Lorde's latest album Melodrama is a strong pop record, and her date at Brighton Centre is refreshingly affordable compared to Beyonce and Rihanna kind of prices. Influences range from Lana Del Rey to James Blake and Grimes so there will be a diverse soundworld to explore in the concert.

I

t’s at this time of year, historically, that I have stared at the listings of what’s on in our fair city with all the wonder and greed of a toddler as they first discover a second layer in the family box of chocolates. You know – those big wide eyes, paralysed by indecision and awe. This is when I have had my first proper look at what was on in the Brighton Comedy Festival. Hopefully, once the Brighton Dome’s refurbishment is complete and all of its venues are open again, the festival will return. In the meantime, I’d just like to draw it to your attention that the lack of a comedy festival in October has not, in fact, stopped a lot of top comedians from scheduling Brighton into their tours in that month. There’s heaps of them!

“ I started chasing new comedy nights like Will O’ The Wisps ” In the last decade the live comedy scene has blossomed beautifully. When I first pitched the idea of including previews of comedy shows to Latest 7, way back when, there was Komedia’s weekend Krater Club, the new act night Rabbit In The Headlights upstairs at the Marlborough Theatre (then programmed by a lovely band of people who went on to set up Otherplace Productions, the folks behind popup Brighton Fringe venue, The Warren), and the odd big name playing at the Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall, or the Brighton Centre. That was it. I started chasing

new comedy nights like Will O’ The Wisps, turning up at pubs I’d heard had an open mic night on only to found that they’d closed it the previous month. But I persisted. Boy, am I glad that I persisted. Slowly I saw new comedy nights start. Discovered other clubs that had wandered homeless, start to put down roots. And saw new acts progress from a five minute set to a ten, to a small night’s headline slot, and on to big night lineups and DVD specials. The creativity has flourished, with sketch comedy, character acts, and new bonkers formats cropping up. It’s been marvellous. And led to an incredible comedy community. So welcome back you returning victors, and welcome new faces to our city. Come. Make us laugh some more.
