Holly Herndon and NeYo and goodbye

Walk with life

'm not one to be maudlin or mawkish. Except when it comes to writing about the arts. The most interesting news to impart to you, I think, relates to the awesome shows I've seen recently. NeYo at the Brighton Centre was a bracing surprise. Less Vegas and spangle than some of his poppier peers, here we just had a great full band with highly prominent live drums attacking strong R’n’B hits with gusto. His voice was still and melodious, and a soft acoustic interlude impressed amidst his energetic song and dance act. His enthusiasm in sharing new music with the crowd created a tangible feeling of goodwill too. Holly Herndon put on a stunning show in a totally different mode. Herndon is a visionary artist, beguilingly deconstructing electronic and pop music in complex compositions. Her Attenborough Centre gig utilised live vocals, but often distorted through electronic filters, complementing skittering, staccato music, and with highly effective and dramatic panning between left and right throughout. The visuals were superb, coming across like a live videogame, including innovative text interaction with the audience. We were told that Herndon is working on new music which is very different, and I can't wait to hear what this true pioneer comes up with. In other news, this is my final issue as editor of Latest: it's been a real pleasure, and I'm thrilled that my dear friend, the inimitable Vicky Nangle will be taking the reins. I will be the new Senior Press Officer at Brighton Dome & Festival, a place you've heard me gush on about several times before (e.g. bit.ly/2wNsXZi & bit.ly/2xIl4nc). @Louisxmichael

ll my life I’ve lived near the same field, and all my life I’ve crossed it to get to the bus stop on the other side. But it’s only recently that I’ve begun walking round it. One of my writing teachers at university once told me that we should try and walk four miles and write four pages everyday. Now I’ve never been good at estimating distance in my head but upon first hearing that I thought four miles sounded rather excessive, and a bit unmanageable. Who had the time to walk four whole miles everyday? I didn’t imagine that not only would I go on to follow his advice, but actually have to force myself to start heading home whenever I’m out walking. It’s done nothing short of change my life. Humans were not made to spend their lives moving from one building to another. It is not natural for us to spend every waking moment inside, confined by four walls, a floor, and a ceiling. It is the ultimate self imposed gilded cage. We come from nature, and it is within nature we should remain. For me, the proof of that is in the way walking clears my head like nothing else. When I’m out in nature the thoughts in my head seem to unbundle, like headphones finally being untangled. The tranquility of the grass and the trees dissolves all the unnecessary baggage we unknowingly accumulate without my even noticing, and I come home every time feeling refreshed and revitalised. It’s often said that it’s the little things that count. When I hear that phrase I think of walking now. The simple act of going outside and moving through nature holds so much magic and power within it. In that simplest of acts we can reconnect with our most ancient ancestors, exploring the natural world around us with nothing but our two legs, as we have done for millions of years. Please, as a matter of urgency to your mental and spiritual health, take the time to go for a walk this week. Spend as long as possible walking through nature. Be alone with nothing but your mind and mother nature, and see what happens.

MARGARET CHO Margaret Cho is a comedian, an actress, a writer, a Dancing With Stars sensation, an activist – and so much more. As she prepares for a new tour that takes her away from the States and over the pond, she talks with Victoria Nangle about addiction, Robin Williams, and the British accent. Hi Margaret, how are you today? I am doing great thank you! Congratulations on your new tour: Fresh Off The Bloat, covering addiction, abuse, activism and Asianness. All the ‘A’s. Coming out of addiction, certain things hit your senses like a truck. Which ones surprised you the most? I was surprised at how much I was missing out on – whether that was friendships, good sleep, natural highs like exercise and delicious food. Every day is new now, and different. the subtleties of life are really the meaning of life – it's wonderful. You’re a great voice for liberalism in America. How do you engage with politics with your audiences when the majority of the country voted for President Trump? I don't know exactly, I guess I haven't figured it out. This whole thing is bizarre. I blame Nascar and energy drinks – maybe crystal meth too. We are doomed. What gives you hope for change from the current political direction? The women's marches happening all over the world, the resist march, healthy protest – activism that is unflinching and profound. I love that. I’m very sorry for your loss of Robin Williams as a mentor, but what a beautiful tribute to raise money for the homeless in San Francisco hashtagging his name. What made you gravitate to the homeless in his memory in particular?

Robin did a lot of work with the homeless, mostly through his charity Comic Relief. It seemed like the obvious thing to do to honour him, to go back to a very basic form of giving and helping. We had a lot of fun doing that campaign and helped a bit – #berobin was very successful. What was your impression of the homeless situation and how it can be addressed after working with them? I think in San Francisco it's particularly difficult because of the cost of living there – which is astronomical! There isn't one simple answer for homelessness, but there are many ways to be of service whether that is volunteering or donating to outreach organisations and food banks.

“ There isn't one

simple answer for homelessness, but there are many ways to be of service ”

Great news that ‘Highland’ has been picked up as a pilot. Hopefully we’ll get it over here. Do you have to discipline yourself not to give all the best lines to your favourite characters when working on a script, or do the characters speak only in their own voices so no line could ever be switched? I think that the characters spring to life from the page and they are given their own space to grow and then an actor gets

ahold of them and they transform into mighty forces of fiction. It's fascinating how a project can come from you and then become something else entirely – I love it and I can't wait to bring it to the world of TV!

your class – it's not something we have in America. In the USA, everyone sounds stupid, and we are so proud of that! But in Britain you want to sound like you know what is going on. We don't have a clue and we don't care.

Great to have you back touring in the UK. What tempted you back over the pond to British audiences? I just love the audiences! The best!

What is your life mantra for today – and what was the one for yesterday and all it contained? It's always the same – “it's gonna be alright”.

I remember last time we spoke you were loving the cheese you could get near where you were staying in Edinburgh. What other quirks and details do you think of when you remember your last time here? That your accent speaks volumes about you, your education, where you are from,

ANDREW KAY Spice of life

I

don’t know whether this happens in other places but here in Brighton and Hove chefs play nicely together, they have bonded into a vibrant culinary community and in doing so have made our restaurant scene one of the most exciting places to eat and drink. Last week I saw one of our younger chefs take the bravest leap forward. Kanthi Thamma has made his name at the Curry Leaf Cafe but after a few years has decided that it is time for him to move on and explore new adventures in food. His new company The Spice Circuit is the result and a very excellent result it is. Having already done a few pop ups and with many more planned, and a gastronomic tour of southern India taking place in the new year, Kanthi arranged to take over one of the city’s most exciting and lauded new restaurants, Steven Edwards’ Etch in Hove. Steven’s style is modern British and the format is a tasting menu. The quality of his cooking saw him win the Masterchef professional trophy a few years back so Kanthi was not taking an easy option here, expectations were bound to be high. Well no one needed to worry, Mr Thamma nailed it! Starting with a superb take on a porn star martini created by Sarah Thompson of Blackdown, we were in for an amazing meal. Kanthi adopted Mr Edwards’ style of writing a menu that simply listed two main ingredients at every stage. It worked wonderfully and after a cleansing amusebouche of a tiny poppadum loaded with a light salsa, we were off. First some incredible crisp bread rolls, sheermal, served with a mace butter, an Indian bread that I have never seen but want to see again. Then fennel and mango, crisp pakora served elegantly on clean white plates with a sweet mango purée. Traditional and yet modern, the style of the evening was emerging. Next scallop and coriander, perfectly cooked shellfish dusted with coriander seed and served on a purple cauliflower cream and fried cauliflower florets, delicate, beautifully judged spicing and textures. Paneer next, silky cheese and a punchy cardamom sauce, a step up in the spice stakes but again perfectly balanced. Kanthi might have created an Etch style menu but this was certainly his food. The next dish was a rack of lamb, never the easiest cut to get right but this was perfectly cooked and tender as can be, the potato and spinach accompaniment heavenly and the brick red sauce lifting the whole to new heights. The following star anise sorbet with buttery biscuit crumbs was a game of two halves, I loved the sorbet but didn’t feel that the biscuit worked or for that matter was needed, a small criticism and one that I soon forgot when the delicious broken rice and apple dessert arrived, now that did work, comforting and delightful. The wine flight prepared by the Etch team was stunning too with some real gems and finishing with a Chinese ice wine! This was a coming of age menu from one of the city’s culinary stars.

age menu from a culinary star ”

common with Henry and what are the big differences? The things we have in common are that I am the same height, look similar and sound the same. The big differences? That would be telling! But living in someone else's head for a while, as you do as an actor, is an amazing thing to do and it changes you when you do it.

“ The emotional

STAGE

challenge is being able to carry an audience through two hours ”

Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton. Laurence Fox talks about the play, the player and the playwright.

Why has the play has endured? Because it was written by Tom Stoppard, our finest living dramatist. Some of it is just sublime, like all of his plays. He's operating at a totally, massively heightened intellectual level and the language is utterly satisfying – it's silky and expressive.

What are you most relishing about playing Henry? With the character of Henry I get the chance to play someone who is more intelligent than myself and who has the words in situations where words would fail me.

Are there themes that will resonate with contemporary audiences? Well, it's about love, fear, hope, loss and laughter. Those are themes that at least I hope will resonate.

How would you describe him? I'd sum Henry up as 'The Last Romantic'. He believes in fidelity, loving someone even when they're at their worst, going through life with one person – that's a very romantic notion, isn't it? Do you have anything in

8 | LATEST 7

Why is Tom Stoppard is so revered as a playwright? Because, as he writes in the play in a speech that Henry gives, “What we’re trying to do is to write cricket bats, so that when we throw up an idea and give it a little knock, it might... travel”. Tom Stoppard is very much like Shakespeare in a lot of ways. The tune of his

language is very Shakespearean and also akin to Noel Coward and stuff like that. It's wonderful to act if you get it right and [laughs] pretty terrible if you get it wrong. Is this the first time you've starred in one of Stoppard's plays? What particular challenges does his work present to you as an actor? Yes, it's my first time doing a Stoppard play. It's a complete technical and emotional challenge. Technically there's the fact it's such an enormously precise play with long, big thoughts being expressed, so that's a bit tricky when you are playing someone who is smarter than you are. Then the emotional challenge is being able to carry an audience through two hours. It's tiring but also brilliant. What do you most enjoy about taking a show on tour? England isn't just London, the United Kingdom isn't just London, so it's amazing to be able to see culture everywhere. You've worked extensively across stage, TV and film. What have been your highlights? I most enjoyed working with Kevin Whately and the rest of the Lewis crew, they were such a fantastic bunch and I made some lifelong friends doing it. I What do you especially enjoy about stage work? I enjoy the challenge and community of theatre. When you leave a play, you leave as a better actor. www.atgtickets.com/brighton* 0844 871 7650* *Booking fees apply

REVIEW Mark Watson – MW

A

delicate flower with an unstoppable curiosity and ingenuity, is how Mark Watson comes across at his Worthing stop of the tour of places beginning with his own initials. From chatting to the cabbie about his current location en route, to doing his best to survive on a television programme which abandoned him on an island with other celebrities and few resources – it’s all driven by an unrepentant, “what would happen if...” with a funny and also kind tone to his delivery. An enjoyable gold mine of material was found in the second half of the show with answers submitted by the audience voicing their own quirks. Watson’s genuine curiosity exposed his natural wit and askewcharming engagement with others that kept the show on an enjoyably intimate edge between performer and audience. Being pleasant and non shocking doesn’t grab headlines. But it does make Mark Watson a treat in a world determined to burn. Worthing Theatres, 23 September

Nothing to fear?

T

hey say there’s nothing to fear but fear itself. Well maybe that is true in some cases, but fear is a far more complex thing than that and dismissing it in such a trite way offers little comfort to those who are frightened. I’ve been frightened, not fear of flying or heights or water… no none of those although I can understand them and sympathise with those who hold those fears. No, my fears have always be created by bullies and homophobes. I’m 61 but I’m still haunted by the memories of being bullied as a teenager and I still shake remembering the times that I have been attacked and beaten up simply for being me. And being me includes being and living as an openly gay man.

“ I’m still haunted by being bullied ” I made the choice to come out fully when I was in my early 20s, I had been partially out off an on for years before that. I was bullied at school by one boy in particular and to this day I am convinced that he was himself a homosexual. One of the most terrifying things about homophobia is that much of it is internalised and comes from inside the gay world, there’s ageism, misogyny, sizeism and body fascism at almost every turn. They are damaging and cruel behaviours that we need to get rid of if we are to even hope that we can achieve equality with the world at large. Let’s face it, if we can’t play on an even field within the LGBT world then what hope do we have of convincing the rest.

I can remember well being attacked in Brixton outside a gay pub that had surprisingly risen up in a place that we least expected it. I was beaten up on the seafront whilst walking my dog. I was attacked one new year in Western Road by a reveller who skipped around me as I tried to get home, prodding me and abusing me as he did. It was spotted by the police and I breathed hoping that they would help me, but instead they turned against me. I was horrified and I was distressed. I think that in Brighton the gay community has a far better relationship with the police these days, I certainly hope so. Here in Brighton there is an organisation that is chaired by a remarkable young man called Billie Lewis. Billie dedicates a huge amount of his life to the LGBT Safety Forum on a voluntary basis, and I mean huge, certainly in excess of 40 hours a week. He is a tireless campaigner for LGBT+ rights and a figure of respect. Last week he came into the studio at Latest TV to appear on my media review show Queersay and whilst he was there I recorded and interview with him for AK Soufflé. In a period of 90 minutes I learned so much more about both him and his work and his status in my eyes soared. I urge you to take a look and learn from this remarkable young man. He is also running a fundraising dinner called Dine With The Stars on 12 October at the Jurys Inn Waterfront, three courses and a night of cabaret, all to raise money for the Safety Forum. I will be there for sure. It’s £29 a ticket and they are available by calling 01273 725331
