his week I had a chat about conversation. Sounds a bit meta. How do you talk about talking? Have you run out of things to actually discuss? Not at all. But sometimes, talking with someone new can feel like something of a highly primed minefield. I read something a few years ago about how Young People Today (™) find it especially difficult when entering the job market as they have had roughly zero exchanges with strangers on a onetoone basis. Loads to say on social media. Chat rooms galore to support each other through times of stress or mutual fandom. It’s almost as if the lost art of the letter has returned, much to Jane Austin’s joy, with it’s own Clockwork Orange twist of textspeak and emojis. But actually speaking to someone new face to face has become a terror. It makes sense. Parents have always told their children not to talk to strangers. Quite a lot of strangers treat children (unfairly) as they would spiders, repeating in a mantra under their breath, “they’re more scare of you, they’re more scared of you...” And the chasm between real world interactions gapes even wider. And so, this article said, young people are joining the workplace unsure as to how to go up to a customer and ask if they need any help. Too shy to call when they could email. It’s a little crippling for your prospective career plans. At the end of my chat I realised my tips for conversations are to be friendly, ask questions that don’t accidentally fuse themselves with status answers (What do you do for a living? What’s your favourite book?), listen to where the answers take you, and don’t be afraid to appear the fool. If you don’t ask you don’t learn. And where would the fun be in that?

hen your public transport turns up on time and gets you to your destination right on schedule you feel like a blessed 21st century cosmopolitan person productively going about their day. When it’s delayed, packed with people, and you realise too late that you could have made better time if you’d just walked you feel like a total sucker taken in by the illusion of efficiency. Public transport is often a gambling game. Long before ‘I spy...’ became ‘I spy my bus finally coming round the corner’ one of my earliest memories is sitting on the bus with my mum, on the top deck at the very front. (Truth be told the reason the memory is so vivid is because I distinctly remember asking my mum what this four letter word carved into the seat was. I thought I was being studious.) There was nothing quite as breathtaking as the view from the top of the bus. Fast forward to the present day and public transport no longer inspires that awe. Eight years of regularly getting buses and two years deep into a regular train commute have long since put to rest any wonder my childself might have seen in these systems of transportation. As an adult they're a place for you to zone out and switch off while you’re ferried from A to B. So imagine my surprise when, out of the blue, magic found a way to sneak back into the world of buses and trains. Last week I was sat on the train and, no different from any usual journey, my head was buried in a book. On a basic level it’s an unconscious means of detaching ourselves from the moving room full of strangers around us, whether it’s our phones or music or any other means of distracting ourselves. It was only when I got speaking to two people sat opposite me that all that magic I’d felt as a child flooded back into my head. The longer we talked, the more I began to realise how obscene it is that we all stay silent in what could be equally called a room full of potential friends! Getting off that train I felt something reignited within me, a revival of the childwonder to be found in all things, if you just keep yourself open. LATEST 7/HOMES

he Amazing Adventures Of Pinocchio is not your runofthemill panto. Starting in 2013, James Weisz brought back professional family panto to Brighton after the Theatre Royal stopped running them in 2011. Now in its fifth year, James’ panto promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year the venue is Attenborough Centre For The Creative Arts, an awardwinning, beautifully designed theatre within the Sussex University Campus, and with the new venue comes new possibilities. As James and his team looked over the script, they knew they had to bring a circus into town!

So Vicki McManus, director of The Circus Project, who has previously worked with the company before, including training Sleeping Beauty in silks and Aladdin to ascend from a ropes, was brought in. For those of you who have not yet heard of The Circus Project, it has been running for 18 years providing circus arts classes and training facilities for all ages and abilities in Brighton and Hove. 4 | LATEST 7

in, gin, gin… you cannot move for the stuff, it’s the drink of the moment. Not that I’m complaining, I am a gin fan. I like a G&T, a gin martini and best of all a negroni. But with the rise of the artisanal gin industry here and abroad, which gin do you choose? I currently have five on my shelf, two of which I love, two I like a lot and one which I would not use to polish metal with, so unlike gin is it that I can never see the level dropping below the neck. And that is the problem, you go to buy gin and there are simply too many choices. This is where the Brighton Gin Club comes in. A fairly recent creation run very ably by Jo Miles and Jason Edge, they hold rather clever tasting events at which you can actually taste a wide range of gins at themed events. I was delighted to be invited along to a Dutch Genever and gin evening at the Harbour Hotel. Now as much as I love gin I also love Holland and, over the years, I have tasted a great many Dutch gins and genevers – the root of all things gin. It was a tutored evening and our presenter was a rather animated young man with a clear passion for gins and for genever. I love genever but I think that most people would be surprised to find that this most traditional of spirits tastes rather more like whisky than the juniper infused gin that most of us are used to today. I love it and for the most part so did everyone else in the room, and by comparing four different genevers from one artisan, small batch distillery we were taken on a very pleasant journey that, despite quite a lot of detail, was also rather fun. Zuidam, the makers, certainly maintain very high standards, from presentation to taste and they make small amounts of their fine spirits so it is unlikely that you will ever find them in the high street supermarkets, but I would urge you try the better independent merchants. The kitchen at Harbour also did a great job of sending out some appropriate Dutch snacks, great fried fish with a tartare sauce and bitterballen with sharp mustard and my date for the night, the lovely Ms C ter M (yes Dutch), declared the latter to be as good as it gets. Following the genever we moved on to the kind of gins that we might be more familiar with and amongst them Old Tom, a very traditional format of this drink that was simply delicious. We tried seven gins, started the evening with a great and generous G&T and in the middle a finely crafted Tom Collins. Now that’s my kind of night out.

REVIEW Greg Davies – You Magnificent Beast
G
reg Davies has something of the joyful soul about him. He finds hilarity in the details, in his own life and that of his family, mining old and new stories from teenage hood to his more recent reflections on the loss of his father. It’s a treasured glimpse at the ridiculousness of the mundane, including the transformation of a homemade soft toy – taking the journey from a generous and sweet youth that doesn’t quite fit the world due to Davies’ exrta large proportions, through to something altogether more gross. Honesty without vanity is the name shot through this sweet rock candy. Davies relishes the new discoveries dealt up by his own middle aged body. He giggles again at his previous career as a teacher. Most of all, despite his recent mourning, he continues to find – and love – the silliness and the absurdity of the world presented to him. Long may the ridiculous journey continue. fter writing about the darker side of the gay world for a few weeks now, and I have to admit wallowing a little in the global state of play, I feel the need to redress the balance. It was Tom Robinson who, back in 1978 (yes prehistory), released this iconic anthem that was at the time such a bold move. I was 22 and out, but only just, and we all revelled at how the world of pop and pop fans embraced this single, even the BBC had them play on Top Of The Pops. It was only in 1983 that we saw “Auntie” ban Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s equally ground breaking ‘Relax’. Tom Robinson was instantly something of a folk hero and I have held him in high regard ever since. His marriage to a woman, with whom he clearly had fallen in love, and his stand that he remained
“ I was 22 and out, but only just ” a gay man who had simply fallen in love with a woman re enforced my belief that as ordinary humans we should at least be allowed to retain the right to change our minds. I’ve not changed my mind, but there have been moments when I have been deeply affected by the friendship of a female friend. It doesn’t make me a bisexual or a heterosexual, far from it, and although I might joke that it makes me a lesbian, it is only in jest. I once appeared on Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio programme in a show about emasculation. The suggestion was that the guests had in some way been emasculated by something that had happened to them. For me that was redundancy, or at least that was the
blanket under which my forced departure had been hidden. I am not sure if a part of that had been homophobia, I do know that a great part of it was deceit and lies, but heighho, I survived – and I certainly didn’t feel emasculated by it. If anything it made me stronger, well not in the first week or two when it still stung, but pretty soon I bounced back, bigger and bolder than ever. Not having to commute played a part, not having to tow a company line that was, at times, pretty silly – all this gave me a new strength. I was at a massive turning point in my life and one that I now have few regrets about. Okay, maybe if I had played the quieter role, kept my head down and cow towed to the “powers” I would still be there, earning lots of money and living a very different life. I didn’t. I chose to be me, well I suppose that choice was forced on me. Anyway, I’m glad to be gay so thank you to those who gave me the strength to choose this colourful, sometimes rocky and usually fun course.
