Age statements and spirits
T
here are days when words just escape me. I know there’s a word that means exactly what it is I want to say but can I find it? Never in a month of Sundays. I love words so this is a bit of a blow. I tell my friends that my brain’s gone on holiday and they’ll have to humour me as I wave my hands around wildly saying things like: “You know! That thing with all the pages in it that holds stories and facts and stuff! Books! That’s it – books!” And they look at me like I’m a fiveyearold putting on a family pantomime to longsuffering aunts and uncles. The thing that I realised this week (but everyone else probably worked out ages ago) is that just because words aren’t serving themselves up in fine order like a happy Pez dispenser it doesn’t mean that the rest of my noggin isn’t in working order. All of my brain isn’t on strike. It just feels like it is because I can’t articulate what’s going on inside. And it was in saying that to another friend suffering from wordhideandseek that I realised it was an idea I ought to remember for myself. I do like learning new things. I like it when I can feel my mind pulsing in awe and amazement, as it does whenever Festival Of The Spoken Nerd is in town (see my interview with one third of the group – Helen Arney – on p15). Science has always felt like explained magic to me, ever since my physics teacher in secondary school started playing around with lasers and smoke. FOSN also seem to have this attitude towards science, as last time I saw them at The Old Market I clearly remember giant smoke rings being made with a dustbin, a smoke machine, and a hearty thump. Perhaps being ‘dumbstruck’ is a good thing. All the better to listen and learn with, my dear – all the better.

couple of years ago Cognac producer Rémy Martin had the not so crazy idea to create a film to promote their premium product “Louis XIII”. The film served its purpose, gaining recognition in no small part because it stars John Malkovich and is directed by Robert Rodriguez. However, the thing that makes this interesting is that components of this Cognac brand take 100 years to age and the film, like the spirit, will remain unreleased for another century. So maybe don’t get too excited about seeing it. The reason I mention this frustratingly enigmatic film is because the pervasive consumer consensus with spirits is that age is synonymous with quality, but this isn’t necessarily true. The message of the Rémy Martin marketing is clear, it is practically shouting “we age our cognac for 100 years” because they know to us that translates as “our cognac is good”. Though in reality, while this spirit is amazing it isn’t as good as say, the 2017 best cognac in the world ‘Leyrat Glory extra’ and we know this because one is the best cognac in the world and the other isn’t. This is an example of what I am talking about, the Rémy Martin is very expensive (£5,000) and very old, whereas the Leyrat is cheaper (£300) and younger, but clearly this has little correlation to the quality of the actual drink. The basic misunderstanding may come from the fact that while older may not mean better, it certainly does mean more expensive. This is for a number of reasons but most notably is that when aging spirits in a warmer climate, it’s possible to lose 80% of that barrel to evaporation, so essentially you are compounding the price of that liquid. The message I am trying to convey is that if you are looking to spend more money on a bottle of whiskey, don’t be seduced by a 25year age statement. If anything, a much better indication of quality is the producer and if it’s a particular flavour you are looking for, then look at the type of barrel it is aged in i.e. sherry or bourbon casks. All this being said, if you want to live long enough to see that Malkovich film you should probably give up the booze all together. LATEST 7/HOMES

HELEN ARNEY Bringing science to the masses and feeding insatiable curiosity as one third of comedy science group Festival Of The Spoken Nerd, comedian and songstress Helen Arney is back on the road again with a new FOSN show and book, fresh from their BBC Radio show and appearing on QI. Victoria Nangle finds out more.
What was the most recent thing that you learned that amazed you? When plutonium, americium and curium were discovered, suggestions for their names included extremium, pandemonium and bastardium. I’m amazed that none of them were used. Festival Of The Spoken Nerd are a treasure trove of mental stimuli. I find that the shows stretch my mental agility nicely. What great concepts and revelations will you be sharing in 'You Can't Polish A Nerd’? Plenty! Matt uses mathematics and geometry to highfive himself in another dimension. Steve creates a genuinely profound visual way to understand the ungraspable concept of black holes and gravitational waves, using an electric drill, some rollerskates and a sheet of latex. Don’t ask why he had those things just lying around at home. And I have a very funny song about bananas. How do you gauge communicating quite complex ideas so that they are accessible to Joe Public's scientific vocabulary? Using the traditional staple of scientific research: trial and error. We’ve been previewing some of the material for this show over months, or sometimes even years, at our new material night ‘An Evening Of Unnecessary Detail’ and shows at the Underbelly
Festival. It’s always the audiences themselves that decide whether a joke, a concept or a whole section lives on to appear in a tour show, or dies on the theatre floor that night. By the time we get to putting together a new full show, every bit has been roadtested on plenty of nerds and nonnerds – and each other, of course. It was great seeing you cameo on QI. You seem perfect bedfellows with the QI Elves and the curiosity they culture. Will there be more collaborations in the future? Absolutely! Where there is a will there is a way… we just need to find someone called Will to make that phrase really work…
“ Matt uses
mathematics and geometry to high five himself in another dimension. ” How did you find creating an "experimental" BBC Radio 4 show went, when your live shows have a lot of impact visually? It was really interesting, and by “interesting” we mean really hard. Again, we did a whole heap of preview shows for all sorts of audiences (both geek and lay) and discovered all sorts of new ways to get into the heads of listeners and work out how to get ideas stuck inside – and then keep them there. We’re really pleased with how the series came out, but the toughest bit of all was keeping it down to 13.5 minutes. It makes a 55
minute Edinburgh show seem like a gentle stroll when it’s compared to the compact sprint of a Radio Comedy quarterhour. The evenings are drawing in, the goose is getting fat… might we possibly hear golden tracks from your album 'It's Going To Be Awkward This Christmas' during this tour? Ooh, yes! One of the songs *almost* made it into the show, but as the tour ends in November I expect I’ll be doing at least one of them at Robin Ince’s new Nine Lessons And Carols shows at Conway Hall in December. Roll on the festivities! A masterful Christmas present might be Festival of the Spoken Nerd's new book, 'The Element In The Room'. What was your favourite and what was the worst aspect of putting it together with Steve Mould?
Well, we thought doing the radio show wasn’t hard enough by making us recalibrate our totally visual style for radio. So we did it all again but this time adapting our live, improvised style into black and white (and red) words that don’t have moving visuals, and are locked onto paper for all time. The worst bit was probably getting our 6month old daughter to sleep and then sneaking upstairs to write until she woke again around 2am. The best bit was watching her get her little teeth into a copy. The first preview edition has some very unique bitemarks on it. Festival Of The Spoken Nerd: You Can’t Polish A Nerd, The Old Market, Saturday 5 November 2017, 4.30pm & 8.30pm, £17.50/14, www.theoldmarket.com

Hi Helen, how are things today with you? Not bad, we are three shows into our new tour of ‘You Can’t Polish A Nerd’ and all three nerds are still talking to each other. Just about.

STAGE
Brilliant youth opera at Glyndebourne
G
lyndebourne is famous for it’s festival of opera each summer, reviving neglected works and championing new alongside ever popular classics. But as well as all this they have a vibrant education department and youth opera. Over the years we have been lucky enough to see a re working of Don Giovanni, Nightwatch and the dark and compelling Nothing, all of which gave voice to a wide reaching community of young people, some of whom might never have encountered the opera without this initiative. Their topical new youth opera explores the experiences of young people forced by war to flee their homes and it has its world premiere at Glyndebourne on 11 November. Belongings has been composed by Lewis Murphy, Glyndebourne’s Young ComposerinResidence, with a libretto by Laura Attridge. It juxtaposes the story of WWII evacuees, travelling from London to Lewes to
16 | LATEST 7
escape the Blitz, with a present day tale of refugee children who have fled various wartorn locations.
“ Belongings
explores the themes of displacement & connection ”
Lewis Murphy said: “Belongings explores the themes of displacement and connection, both of which feel particularly current today.” Earlier this year the creative team of Belongings travelled to Sarteano, Italy to meet young people in refugee communities as part of a visit organised by The Complete Freedom of Truth (TCFT), a project to connect young people across Europe. The team had the opportunity to work with around 70 young men from a variety of backgrounds including Nigerian, Gambian, Sudanese and Bengali to create pieces of ‘image
theatre’ that will feed directly into the upcoming production. Director Lucy Bradley said: ‘‘Working to create a new opera always feels hugely exciting, but with Belongings there is an additional sense of responsibility because of its very sensitive and hugely relevant subject matter. These sessions were incredibly beneficial as an opportunity to engage directly with individuals who had undertaken difficult journeys to leave home and to travel across Europe to Italy.” Belongings will be performed by 65 members of Glyndebourne Youth Opera. Lucy Perry, Glyndebourne’s Head of Education said: “Glyndebourne Youth Opera marks its 20th anniversary in 2017 and Belongings continues our commitment to commissioning challenging new work with significant contemporary relevance. It is essential for Glyndebourne to provide the space for young people to engage with the world around them.” The young performers, aged 919, will be accompanied by three professional opera singers including the versatile British bassbaritone Rodney Earl Clarke, who reached the semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2016 as part of the classical crossover group Vox Fortura. The other professional singers are mezzosoprano Leslie Davis and soprano Nardus Williams, the first singer to win the Trinity Laban Gold Medal. Belongings is performed at Glyndebourne on Saturday 11 November 2017. tickets 01273 815000 glyndebourne.com
REVIEW Private Lives
N
oël Coward’s classic conflict of lovers demands the sharpest, slickest and sweetest delivery, to which this production adds charm and poignancy in full measure. It’s not often the audience needs to works quite so hard to keep up with the verbal parrying, and every blow landed. Then there were the wicked sulky silences, pouts and scowls that would suddenly flare up again, twice as fierce. For the sake of exciting comedy, this well honed cast took fearful risks which paid off as their acidly clear diction and precision timing carried the drama and delight to the very back of the auditorium. Just shut up
I
’ve made 50 episodes of my other LGBT+ TV show Queer Say and it is not only amazing but alarming to see the frequency that some issues appear in the global media – Chechnya, the Australian same sex marriage referendum and a certain American President, they seem to be in the news week on week. But the ones that strike me most are the stories surrounding the issues attached to the transgender community. It distresses me to see how many people have so many issues with this, and yet I fail to understand how this can be. You see I don’t think that anyone who is not trans or considering transitioning can form a valid or informed opinion. I mean how can they really know what it is like to make this lifechanging
“ They are fighting to be respected ” decision, especially in a world where clearly that choice is being branded as abnormal. It’s surely incredibly difficult to take the route of transition in full knowledge that for a great many misguided people that route is simply wrong. It’s much like people who, on seeing a friend or colleague who is distressed or upset, offer the following advice – “Oh you shouldn’t let it upset you”, when clearly it already has upset them. That kind of weak platitude obviously comes too late and is certainly not based on the distressed person’s real feelings. Well, wanting to live your life as a man or a woman is a very personal thing no matter what your birth gender was, and no one
has the right to tell anyone else that they are wrong. If you were born male but feel that you are really female then that should be the end to it – and vice versa. Unfortunately the whole issue is being exacerbated by people suggesting that there are men who are transitioning or living as women simply so they can gain access to much fought over womenonly spaces, refuges, prisons and the like. Maybe there are a few opportunistic monsters out there who do this, but surely this is not something that can be waved at the entire trans community. From my experience most trans people simply wish to lead a normal and ordinary life. And for those of you who will say that there are some very militant attitudes in the trans community, I would say that if there are then they are fighting to be respected and allowed to lead that normal and ordinary life. If you don’t know what this issue is all about, and you have no respect for a fellow human being’s personal existence then I say shut up, and on that note I am going to shut up too.
