Postcards to the edge

Hyper masculinity is a plague on the modern man

T

H

he road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and sometimes it feels like that road has become something of a dual carriage motorway. Most of us ‘mean well’. I certainly try to. And lately I’ve been trying to do a little bit more, rather than chastising myself for not having found the time to do lots. Years ago, in an effort to address this, I took to sending what I called ‘postcards’. Just like those holiday missives, these are short communications that simply say: I’m thinking of you. A Facebook poke, a text message with a picture of some graffiti that resonates, or even an actual physical postcard. I get that everyone else is busy too, so this way I’m touching base without making too many demands on their time or an answer. (Yes, I’m thinking about you, parents of small children who tell me your dream of being able to have time again to have a shower on your own). I’m a background presence. This is pretty much what Facebook and Twitter have been like for a lot of people. With friends and families scattered across cities, countries and the world that you can just ‘keep an eye on’. Which was why the #metoo movement was so effective last week, showing in one huge dark descending storm cloud across female (and some male) statuses the scale of harassment and sexual assaults. Let it rain in changes into our world view and actions – please, let it rain. Who knows what will happen next, but we are most definitely in the middle of a historical and political maelstrom, neatly highlighted by political activist and comedian Mark Thomas’ (interview p5) new show of educated speculation. I have now made plans to walk on the beach with a loved one. And that’s one step more than a postcard.

ypermasculinity dictates that in order to be a man you must in no way resemble a woman; being even remotely feminine strips you entirely of your masculinity. This then means that conventionally feminine traits such as tenderness, compassion and empathy are strictly off limits. The man determined to be perceived as a man by society must alienate themselves from all emotion that is considered feminine. In place of these feminine emotions men are permitted lust to present sexual prowess, rage to show off strength, and bravado to display courage. By limiting the expressiveness of man within the parameters of this concept of hypermasculinity men are corralled into a specific mould. 76 per cent of suicide cases are men, and suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 50. These figures have been consistently increasing, and are the worst they have ever been. In my experience it is this expectation that is to blame. Men feel they must fulfil this masculine role in order to be a man, and when some inevitably cannot, the message from society that they are not real men is understandably too much to bear. But more than this, many men are unable to deal with the disassociation from emotion that the hypermasculine persona requires. In this highly pressurised world they would rather not live at all than live emotionally stunted – rather take their lives than have a halflife. To me, hypermasculinity is about rooting your identity in your gender. There is so much more to everyone than their reproductive organs and the societal expectations that surround them! We are told to be ourselves, while simultaneously being expected to remain within strict parameters that dictate our quality of life. I say life is too short and too beautiful to waste it feeling constricted in any way! Wear the colours you feel beautiful in, sing the songs that let you shed your worries, behave the way you would if judgement didn't exist. Because when you do, you’ll be taking the first steps towards a world where judgement doesn’t exist.

MARK THOMAS Activist and comedian, author and awardwinner, Guinness world record setter for the most political demonstrations in 24 hours, and holder of the Kurdish National Congress Medal of Honour. Mark Thomas is all this and more. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about his new show, heroes & villains, and Freddo Frog chocolate bars. Hi Mark, I hope you're doing well. How is today striking you? Splendid, thank you. The new show sounds very intriguing. You're asking us to make outlandish predictions in 'A Show That Gambles On The Future' – what do you think is the most low key outlandish thing that has happened in recent times? Trump silent on Nazis. You would have a long way to go to beat that as an outlandish event. One of the easiest things you have to do as US president is condemn Nazis, it is not a hard thing to do and it is in the job description alongside 'don't punch babies' and 'never say **** in a state of the union address'. We do live in interesting times, and there are obviously big changes afoot. There seem to be a lot of 'villains' in the political landscape – who do you think the current 'heroes' might be and why? If you're looking for heroes, without

doubt the firefighters at Grenfell. Then young people for turning up to vote in the snap election.

“ Beware people

who are so rich and powerful that they don't need to bother with haircuts. ”

Stephen Hawkins for being an allround clever fella and calling out Hunt on the NHS. The McDonalds strikers for calling and organising the first ever strike at McDonalds in the UK fight for £10 an hour. I see loads of good people as an activist; loads. I met up with FGM survivors and

campaigners this week – they are pretty ****ing amazing! I was doing a fundraiser with my friend Colin the other day, he was on the team who pioneered the drugs that stops the body rejecting organ transplants... he is pretty ****ing amazing too. As an activist you've fought against a lot of injustice, shedding light on the murkier things, they get embarrassed or even better prosecuted. Is there more to fight against now, or is it all just out in the light without pretense? There is always work to be done. Why do you think politicians seem happier to take posts leading the experts – declaring their ignorance – whilst ignoring those experts' opinion? Or is that just an illusion from spin? Ah, the Eton effect: 'I went to Oxbridge, I'm born to rule so who the **** are you with your peerreviewed

scientific rigour researched based factual analysis to come and challenge my shortly held beliefs that will advance my political career?' I think that sums it up. Always beware people who are so rich and powerful that they don't need to bother with haircuts. What are your predictions for the next 12 months? Freddo Frog chocolate bars become an even more popular tool for measuring inflation and wage devaluation. Tinned bitter to make a comeback. May/DUP starts to lose the numbers through byelections. An election in two years. UK/EU negotiations fail and UK applies to join Indian Empire. What is your favourite prediction that you have heard? 'While Trump is asleep, everyone in the White House will quietly leave." What sources do you trust? Experts and journos like Rob Evans. It's really lovely to have you back in Hove again. Is there anything in particular that you associate with playing to an audience here? Dreads, peace and love.

What newspaper headline would you most like to read tomorrow morning? Boris death by bendy banana. Mark Thomas: A Show That Gambles On The Future, The Old Market, Tuesday 21 November 2017, 7.30pm, £16/12, www.theoldmarket.com

THE REAL THING Starring Laurence Fox in Tom Stoppard’s play at the Theatre Royal Brighton

aurence Fox will visit Brighton at the end of October, starring in Tom Stoppard’s award winning play The Real Thing. Described by The Spectator as: “a play that reminds you why you go to the theatre and why you fall in love. And why, just sometimes, it is all worth the effort”, audiences at Theatre Royal Brighton are in for a treat. Henry is the smartest and sharpest playwright of his generation. His wife, Charlotte, an actress, has been appearing in a play by Henry about a couple whose marriage is on the verge of collapse. Max, her leading man, is also married to an actress, Annie. When Henry’s affair with Annie threatens to destroy his own marriage, he realises life has started imitating art. But are they really in love? Is it the real thing? First staged in 1982, The Real Thing combines the intellectual and dazzling wordplay of Stoppard at his most witty with some of his most tender and touching writing. A clever, poignant and entertaining examination of infidelity, The Real Thing is a multi award winning modern classic.

“ Dazzling wordplay of Stoppard at his most witty ” The Real Thing stars Laurence Fox, a member of one of the UK’s leading acting dynasties, who is best known for playing DS James Hathaway in Lewis. Other television credits include A Room With A View and Wired, while his film credits include Gosford Park and Becoming Jane and recent stage roles include Our Boys and Strangers On A Train. The play is written by Tom Stoppard whose many plays include Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead and Arcadia, which played at Theatre Royal Brighton in 2015. He is also famous for co writing the screenplay for Shakespeare In Love. His numerous awards include the 2013 PEN Pinter Prize for “his determination to tell things as they are”. Sabai

I

wish with all my heart that I had been lucky enough to visit Thailand, and maybe I will one day, but for now I make do with indulging from time to time in Thai food. I’ve no personal experience of the food cooked in the country but I have over the years eaten some great Thai food and sadly some very poor ones. By poor I mean cheat Thai, skimping on the real ingredients, ginger where galangal should be, peas and not pea aubergines, things that make all the difference in creating those unique flavours. A few years ago I met Brian and Gina, a young couple who were opening a new restaurant called Sabai. I loved it because there I found all of those unique and precious ingredients used to full effect. It’s a few years on and I occasionally pop in for a bite to eat when the urge for Gina’s amazing and fiery beef salad takes me, how I love that dish. And last night, even though there were so many new dishes to try, I could not resist ordering a portion of that favourite – and it was as good and exciting as ever, rare beef, tomato, fish sauce, mint… a powerful hit of red chilli, wow, I love it. But the real reason was to try a few new offerings and the first was a sharing platter of delights. Sabai make great satay, tender chicken skewers and a properly constructed peanut sauce that lifts the dish in that magical sweet and savoury way. The papaya salad was the bright and again spikily refreshing mix of crunchy fresh fruit, peanut and vibrant dressing, and the plain noodles the perfect cooling foil to that heat. Thai sausages were meaty and heavily fragrant with lemon grass, made to Gina’s recipe and spice blend by their butcher. The vegetable tempura was good too, cooked for enough time to heat the vegetables and make the batter crisp. The whole platter was generous and satisfying and possibly a complete meal in itself. Gina was having none of that and wanted me to try a new sea bass dish. Now my companion that night was Mr S, a man fearful of fish, silly thing. So in addition to the fish we had a green chicken curry, a really good green curry buzzing with spice, lime leaf and softened by coconut. We both loved it. But it was the sea bass, boned and butterflied before frying and then topped with wonderful stir fried vegetables and then a branch of amazing fresh green peppercorns, another telltale ingredient, that won both our hearts and was for Mr S another step in his road to fish eating. We had no room for dessert, but had enjoyed a bottle of their very good and sensibly priced house white. Sabai looks good, the service is impeccable and the prices sensible – and as far as I can say, the food is very authentic.

ith the recent ground breaking in Circus Street for the new South East Dance headquarters and programmes rich with dance at all of the city’s arts venues, it seems clear that Brighton and Hove will be the focal home for dance in the South East. Why not? The city has hosted most of the great contemporary dancers and dance companies for many years, at what was once the Gardiner Arts Centre and is now ACCA, at the Brighton Dome both during and outside the festival, and at the Theatre Royal where Rambert regularly perform. Now the Brighton Dome Concert Hall is host to a new company. Following an exceptional career as a ballet star, international dance icon Carlos Acosta is launching his brand new company, Acosta Danza.

ua Lipa. It’s not a name many people are familiar with, but the BritishAlbanian singer has recently risen to fame with a selection of huge pop hits. Dua strolled on stage, and kicked off the performance with ‘Hotter Than Hell’, then went on to perform a mix of upbeat and downbeat songs nailing every single one. One of the most notable things was that when she performed some of her lesser known songs, the audience still sang along. Most probably because Dua is so captivating. She is definitely new to the world of performing, as came through as we felt the vastness of the empty parts of the stage. You really had to lock onto her to keep your eyes from wandering to the emptiness elsewhere. There were a few standout moments. She stripped it back to just her and her guitarist, Kai, mesmerising everyone with a simplified version of ‘Thinking ‘Bout You’. She moved on to shock the audience by sitting on the barrier, holding people’s hands, and singing one of her first songs ‘New Love’ directly to them. A very heartfelt moment. Incredible vocals, unique and masterful pop songs, and a captivating personality. Dua is a star in the making. Brighton Dome, 5 October 2017

The “G” word

W

e all live by rules. Rules of our own, rules of society and law and religion, yes we all live by them, by which I mean we are all impacted on by them and not necessarily that we obey them. There are times when I am sure we all break the rules, simple things for the most part, crossing a road on a red light, that kind of thing. I find the hardest rules to live by are those relating to being politically correct. I go to comedy gigs and hear stand ups stretch the bounds of what it is acceptable to say with almost every breath – but it’s “okay” because it’s “comedy” it’s “ironic” they’re merely being “provocative”, pushing us to face our own demons. I agree with them, it’s good to be challenged in this way.

“ It’s good to be challenged ” I recently used a word that I had not realised was quite so taboo in a group discussion. Not the “F” word or the “C” word even, no neither. I used the word “ghetto”. I later looked it up because in using it I generated an atmosphere that was a little uncomfortable, and here is what I found: “An area of a city, especially a very poor area, where people of a particular race or religion live closely together and apart from other people: In the past, an area of a city where Jews were made to live. A part of society or group that is in some way divided from the main part.” Yes the word “ghetto” does carry with it an unacceptable

history, an overtone of oppression and misery, so I can see how it might raise hackles. But I was knowingly using the word to describe a situation that gay oppression and homophobia has undoubtedly created over the centuries. In using the word I was not condemning it either. Although I would rather I lived in an allaccepting world without prejudice, I do know and accept that for safety and for comfort we have created our own safe places, our gay villages. How cosy the word “village” is in comparison to “ghetto” – and don’t get me wrong, I applaud that. I grew up in a village and it was pretty cosy, although I’m not sure how cosy it might have seemed had I stayed there and emerged from my adolescent shell the fully fledged homosexual that I now am. And I know that our exclusive spaces are a bolt hole for those LGBT+ souls who are yet to find their comfort zones, places to meet like minds, peers and friends. It’s all good, I admit that freely. What I meant to say by using the “G” word is that we have been forced by a less than accepting society to create a separate world outside their normality and for me that is part of our continuing oppression. I don’t want to be forced to live an outsider’s life – and for the most part I don’t. I want to fight for a world where no one bothers to ask about my sexuality, a world where the word “equality” becomes redundant – and for that matter the word “ghetto”.
