Growing pains
It is time we learned to understand computers
G
F
etting older. We’re all doing it. Passing ‘sage’ advice on to the next generation, berating the next generation, and hearing the next generation complaining about how they’re getting older. Is there ever a time when we actually believe that we are young? Even at school I remember being told that we weren’t in kindergarten now and that we’d better buck up and grow up. And feeling a longing for those days of colouring in and learning cursive letters. Wasn’t it better in the old days when we didn’t have to do maths and learn the capitals of countries around the world we could barely pronounce, let alone envisage? Let’s here it for preschool nostalgia! Of course, it’s ridiculous. We are all getting older, but there are also always people that are older than us. I saw a comedian this week speak of how they were reflecting upon their life and what they wanted to achieve now that they had reached thirty. Comic and writer Richard Herring has developed something of an institution for birthdaydecademarking shows with ‘Oh F**k, I’m Forty’, recently followed by ‘Oh Frig, I’m Fifty’. I doubt anyone would take any bets against an ‘Oh Sugar, I’m Sixty’ turning up in ten years’ time, reflecting upon how little he knew at fifty and how life was so sweet back then. In this city more than probably anywhere else, we are young, we seize the day, and regardless of how many years we’ve spent alive we keep exploring. Here, Halloween is not just for the small wee things escorted around the neighbourhood trick or treating – it takes over EVERYWHERE. Keep making new fantastic memories and stop harking back to the older ones. They weren’t better, they’ve just acquired a sepia tint. And you can add that with a filter on your phone.

or the first twenty years of their existence on our planet and in our world we can be forgiven for delegating computers’ inner workings and persistent maintenance to experts. As our culture becomes increasingly digitalised and humanity proceeds to merge further with technology on every level, what we've always disregarded as 'computer jargon' is becoming more and more important and relevant. The digital age began in the hands of a private few, funded and designed by individuals with a farflung dream. Now that dream has become a reality, and the technology that once existed only in the minds of the few is now in the hands of the majority. Though most do not realise it, now is the critical point at which we must take the reins and put ourselves in the driver’s seat. This is no longer a curious exploration into a new world, this is a fully fledged expedition into a new age for humanity, and we must make sure we are the ones in control of our destination. It is now illogical and impractical to allow technological design and production, or even technological understanding on a more basic and vital level, to go on as the sole jurisdiction of the minute private few. We must learn at least the basics of computing and technology in order to better synthesise mentally with this new technological age. We must become technologically literate or else risk being as disadvantaged as those in the past who were unable to read in a world of books. Pessimists must realise that technology does not have to result in the cold unfeeling unnatural technological hellscapes that make up dystopias. Technology combined with nature creates a beautiful new and more productive and sustainable ecosystem. It can be used to augment our natural abilities for genuine human betterment. Technology can create real, pure miracles. By embracing technology mentally as a society we take technology into our own hands. The good intentions shared by the majority will manifest in new, peaceful and truly beneficial technological innovations. LATEST 7/HOMES

JASON BYRNE
A whirling dervish of a comedian, writer, interviewer, panelist and creative whirligig – Jason Byrne is coming to Hove with his brand new show The Man With Three Brains. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about badgerspotting, how his brain works, and what the Jason Byrne bar would look like. Hi Jason, how are you doing today – up to any adventures? Today I’m taking out a new twoyearold horse to break it in. My neighbour breaks in horses so I help him in my time off. That and tonight we badger spot. Your show is called The Man With Three Brains, revealing the inner workings of the comic brain. What is it that surprises an audience the most about being a comedian when you disclose it? How good looking and tall I am, they can’t believe I can exist like that and be funny at the same time. Also the speed of wit amazes them, and the fact that many of us comics don’t like Blur. Did you have to dig deep with selfexamination for this show, or was it more license to let fly with your ideas? I have been like this for 22 years, so this show is more of an outing. I can finally admit that my brain works in many insane ways, and it’s very different to a lot of brains out there. I will be totally letting it fly, in fact the whole audience will let fly as we – altogether as a group – lose the plot.
What is your writing process when you have a new show in the works? I write on stage, bring ideas up there or silly props and expand the idea. I never stop so my shows are very different all the time. Once, audience members brought props and left them on the stage for me to play with, I kept some props and brought them onto other shows. Because of the nature of my material, it changes with the audience and my surroundings. I’m the chameleon of the comic world. You've always had masses of energy (no pun intended) on stage in your shows. How do you keep your energy levels up when you're on tour so as not to deplete? I don’t drink, and I exercise a lot. I’ll find different running tracks to go on around Britain or train with a local group in whatever sport, running, football, etc. What is your castiron cureall recipe to Fringe flu or tour temperature, when you feel rubbish but need to knock it out of yourself? I find running in a half full or empty hot bath works. Make
sure the bathroom is full of steam and run in the bath, it works a treat. Just don’t wear your runners, oh and a drop of Vicks in the bath. My favourite word is 'oops' as is means a story is happening when someone says it. What is your favourite word, or noise, and why? You can’t print any of my favourite words, but other favourite words are, over, done, finished, end, behind, backwards, in and out… I just love, love making.
The whole audience will let fly as we altogether as a group, lose the plot There's a fair bit of audience participation in your shows. In all your times getting people involved, who has stuck with you the most in terms of someone you have drawn into the action, and why?
A group of teenagers were playing in the laneway of a venue I was in, kicking the ball against the exit door, I opened the door and brought them in to say hello to the audience. We played keepy uppy with the ball for 10 minutes on stage. Loved it. Man walks into Jason Byrne's Bar, orders 'the usual', he's a regular… can you describe the bar, the man, and 'the usual'? The bar is very very old, in fact the oldest pub in the world, it’s dark and has no music, two people may have passed away in the corner recently, the usual is… is a beer from Glasgow brewed in Germany, can’t remember the name of it, but that’s what his usual is… or HERS!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat today. Out of your plans for today, what are you most looking forward to? Getting off the horse and relaxing in an ice bath just large enough for my testicles. And man is it large! Jason Byrne: The Man With Three Brains, The Old Market, Saturday 25 November 2017, 8pm, from £19.50, theoldmarket.com

THE
Top of the chefs
I
n a week’s time I will have been on stage once again, with my friend from BBC Sussex, Allison Ferns, to announce the winners of this year’s Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival Awards. It’s a job that I have Steven Edwards been doing for many years now and Etch one that I really enjoy. In the last few years we have seen Michael Bremner 64 Degrees the gastronomic endeavours of the city’s food and drink industry, whether bars and restaurants or food producers, achieve at last the national and international recognition that we have long believed they deserve. This year my special area of judging was to chair the competition for top chef and best young chef and it was no cake walk, in fact not one served a dessert. I’m only joking, all six competitors were certainly worthy of being in the final. Here are the best chefs who made it to the last three and in no particular order. Duncan Ray from The Little Fish Market’s cooking is based on classic ideas and combinations that he takes to the next level. Precise cooking, clean flavours and expert seasoning made his dish a real delight that we kept returning to. Michael Bremner from 64 Degrees is, unsurprisingly, a chef cooking at the top of the game, but probably not his top as we are never surprised by the invention that he employs in creating exciting new dishes. And on this occasion it was that combination of classic skill, modern techniques and pure invention that really shone. Steven Edwards from Etch is a confident and precise chef whose seemingly simple dishes are actually Duncan Ray Little Fish Market the culmination of talent and experience – and that manifests itself in food that is in fact in its construction complex – but simply delicious. The young chefs were: Jackson Heron from 64 Degrees cooked partridge and certainly got it right. He showed us that he is a chef who, whilst working at 64 Degrees has learned a great deal but is also developing his own style of dish rather then simply copying his employer. Watching George Boarer from Etch work in the kitchen was fascinating, focused and clean. His process was a fine example of the intelligent care that a modern chef needs to make it in the competitive arena of modern cuisine. We all agreed that this was a very fine dish that respected and showed partridge at its best. George Ousley from Isaac @ created a dish that we loved and tackled the cooking of oysters, a route that could easily go wrong but was actually a triumph. It was a brave and stylish dish that we really admired – and finished.

Glamorous, dangerous and controversial – HiLo Productions present The Mitfords
I
n a century littered with dynastic families and the parts they played in history few names are as fascinating as those of the Mitfords, six girls whose beliefs and marriages were at least fascinating and often controversial. This new play takes you to the heart of the utterly fascinating 20th century world of what surely were amongst the most interesting sisters in history. HiLo Productions are presenting Brightonbased playwright Gail Louw’s brand new onewoman tour de force, The Mitfords. Diana was married to Oswald Mosley and a lifelong fascist. Unity was a great close friend of Hitler’s. Jessica was a

dyedinthewool communist. Deborah became Duchess of Devonshire. Nancy was a well loved novelist… and Pamela kept chickens.
“ There’s just so
much of interest about these women ”
Directed by John Burrows, actress Heather Long stars in the astonishing story of six sisters and their captivating roles in the major world changing events that defined the 20th century.
An inspirational story of strong, bold women and their search for meaning, the sisters adopted fiercely opposing views on all things political, clashing over their opinions on humanity, communism, fascism and Nazism. But being political enemies didn’t mean they couldn’t be personal friends, did it? One thing was always certain: The Mitford Sisters were never destined to be housewives. They lived, they travelled, they loved and, above all else, they stood up for the principles they believed in. On choosing The Mitford Sisters as the topic for her next play, Gail said: “The more I read, the more I realised there’s just so much of interest about these women. Of all my plays, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed the process of reading and learning about it more than with The Mitfords. I’ve found it absolutely fascinating. I hope audiences thoroughly enjoy the theatrically of it all and that they find these sisters just as fascinating and captivating as I do.” Awardwinning playwright Gail Louw has her plays performed throughout the world, most recently in South Africa, San Francisco, Australia and New Zealand. Her other plays include Blonde Poison, which won the Argus Award for Artistic Excellence, and Duwayne, which was awarded Best New Play at the Brighton Festival. REVIEW Mae Martin: Dope
M
ae Martin is open and funny and completely relatable whilst also being utterly unique. This Canadian former prodigy shared her life story charmingly, flexing her not insubstantial funny bones apparently effortlessly in her awardnominated debut solo tour show. She's selfaware of the construct of the show, stepping out of it momentarily as the fun carries her away with extra detail that she says isn't jokes, but finds punchlines for nevertheless. It's a delightful knack. Martin is honest about her addictions, from Bette Midler to hard drugs, emphasising that she's alright now at regular points, caringly deflating any jeopardy that she may have built up to be larger than she might feel comfortable with. It's indicative of the atmosphere that she fosters of good humour and safety. As an autobiographical show it blooms, with a slightly raggedy end as Martin continues to work out how past events are still affecting her. It feels openended, which sits right with her age – now 30 – and continuing exploration of life. That you for the wonder, Mae – it's great to be reminded of it. Komedia, 24 October 2017

To make things right there is no room for complacency
I
t never fails to surprise me, when researching the stories for my series on Latest LGBT+ TV, how many countries that you assume are modern and sophisticated, are in fact primitive. Here in the UK we have made massive progress in achieving a level of equality that we have never seen before. We can get married of course, and adopt, and a wide range of things that no doubt will eventually be taken for granted – that is as long as we continue to fight our corner and make sure that certain hard won legislation is not reversed.
“ There are still bigots and
homophobes close to home ” We might assume that those rights are common to other countries, and especially to those countries that we believe to be a part of what is stupidly referred to as the First World. Australia for instance, who would have thought that Ozzie queers are still fighting for the right to marry, and who would have believed the vitriol that it has spawned. Week on week I have read about the vile bigotry that this proposed change in the law has generated. I used the word ‘reversed’ at the start of this week’s column and you only need to look across the Atlantic to see how quickly
a political change can turn around the status queer in a country. Since the election of a certain business man turned politician, and I shudder at using that word in relation to this man, things have definitely gone into reverse in the USA. Is this the world gone mad? Can what we read in the press, see on TV and online be really happening? ‘Madness’ is surely not a strong enough word to describe what is happening, and happening in the name of right, or god, or justice or humanity, yes, all happening in the name of the warped world of people who believe that the word ‘right’ is owned by their twisted and sometimes inhuman beliefs. But the political wrangling close to home and the comfortable world that we live in is nowhere near as scary as the terrifying regimes across the world where homophobia is a sinister threat that carries mortal implications. I read only too often about executions and torture, but also the inhuman way that these punishments are delivered: stoning, decapitation, being thrown alive from high buildings to your death. We have it better here at the moment that’s for sure, although there are still bigots and homophobes close to home who would welcome a reversion to former oppressive states. We need to learn from what is happening across the pond, and the biggest lesson to learn is that there is no place for complacency. The fight is not over, not just away from home but on our own doorstep. Be strong and let our voice be heard.
