hy are there so many absolutes? It feels like a recent thing. Censorship is pretty high in the debate, triggering absolutes. If you don’t like an opinion on telly then it shouldn’t be allowed to be there (sas my echochamber) – and it’s a strange position that we find ourselves in as all voices have a right to be heard. But sometimes giving some voices a platform just doesn’t sit right at all. Every time Katie Hopkins opens her mouth and something calculated to garner maximum clickbait comes out, a raft of intellectuals hang their heads and sigh. And every time Stella Creasy MP gets trolled and threatened with actual physical violence for campaigning to regulate payday loans companies, there’s a horror that this kind of behaviour seems ‘alright’ to so many people. Maybe we lived in more moderate times before, but right now Trump’s hyperbole feels indicative of the mob voice. ‘These are the best times you have ever seen!’ ‘This is the worst piece of cake that has ever existed!’ Where is the moderation and the qualification? Why has the exclamation point replaced the question mark in so many places? These things leak into elsewhere in life. On MTV and reality shows you can see that one disagreement risks years of friendship. Maybe the drama is the only way to get through. After years of appalling images from charities fostering ‘sympathy fatigue’, is this the other side of that? A friend of mine said to me: “I’ve become Angry Dad. I don’t want to be Angry Dad – the kids just won’t put on their shoes before I blow my top.” Perhaps, like his kids, we need to start listening to the quiet voices again. And we’ll have less angry people.

hen I was seventeen I turned vegetarian. This was a big deal at the time because I come from a GreekCypriot family that loves meat, and my whole life I'd enjoyed the elaborate meat dishes my mum would cook for us every night. I turned vegetarian because I was just becoming fully cognisant of the reality of eating meat. I was quite literally eating another living being. I decided that I couldn't practice the holistic loving lifestyle I wanted while still contributing to the unnecessary cycle of breeding and slaughtering of innocent animals. But at that point that was as far as it went. I didn't imagine that I would go vegan for another few years at least. And then as I turned vegetarian my brother turned vegan. While I was switching chicken fillet for Quorn he was swapping milk for oat milk. When I went from ham and cheese to just cheese he was cutting out cheese altogether. Eventually, hearing him talk about his vegan recipes and substitutes, and following a few vegan websites I realised the transition from vege to vegan was just a little hop, rather than the big leap from omnivore to herbivore. That little hop took me into a whole new world. As soon as I entered into the vegan community I realised that to say veganism is a diet is to say war and peace is a magazine. Veganism transcends just the food you eat, it's a state of mind and a way of life that makes you completely reevaluate your view of the world, and your place within the structure of the earth. Since going vegan I no longer see myself as a superior being. I am an earthling, just as much a child of this planet as any other being we share it with. We are as much a part of the earth’s evolution system as the plants. Our direct life force extends from nature, and veganism promotes a return to a natural way of life that is integrated with nature rather than disconnected from it. We are children of nature, and when we return to it we will be returning to our fully united form.

KEITH DUFFY Formerly of Boyzone, previously of Coronation Street – and currently on tour with ex Westlife member Brian McFadden as Boyzlife, Keith Duffy talks to Victoria Nangle about being an overnight success, fanatical fans, and career tips. Hello Keith, how are you today? I'm absolutely fine, great form and delighted to be alive. What attracted you to working with Brian for this tour? His sheer talent and humour and his ability to give great voice coaching. Brighton is a city with a deeply musical heart and aspirations. What advice would you give to those hoping to break into the business and forge a career as enduring as yours? Follow your dreams, but always have a backup plan because the business can be cruel and full of rejection. It must've been pretty hectic at Boyzone's height. Was there really competition between the band and Take That, or was it all for the newspapers?
Take That were out a couple of years before Boyzone so they reached their pinnacle before us. However when they decided to take a break Boyzone did benefit from their departure.
What has been the strangest fan behaviour you've ever encountered? I receiving a card in the post for my birthday with the sender’s pubic hairs cellotaped to the inside of it!
“ Follow your dreams, but always have a backup plan because the business can be cruel and full of rejection ”
The fanaticism of Boyzone's fans could be compared to One Direction's. How did you cope with the pressure that they've spoken out about finding difficult to deal with? I didn’t find it pressure, it happened overnight so you never really allow yourself to believe it. Nevertheless it felt good to be loved!
Which musicians do you admire? Brian McFadden, Larry Mullen, Slash, Brian May, The Edge. If Ciaran could return to Corrie, what would you have liked him to have been up to in the interim years? Bank robbing!
Would you combine your acting and music and take any role in an existing musical, what would it be and why would you choose that particular role? No. I’d probably consider Danny in Grease but that’s about it. What do you think you will miss the most when this tour comes to an end? My tour manager Johnny. You don't seem to have aged a day in 20 years. What's your tip to such youthful skin? Genetically gifted by my mother. Mum’s 68 and doesn’t have a wrinkle on her face. REVIEW P. P. Arnold
STAGE
A brilliant revival of Berkoff’s East at the Theatre Royal Brighton
S
teven Berkoff is a man of the theatre, sometime Brightonian, who has many manifestations. As a stage actor his performances have always been powerful and well received, as a film actor he has gained a reputation for playing tough guys on both sides of the Atlantic – but as a dramatist his work has become part of the great canon of modern theatre and over the years, in fact 42 years since East was written, it has been a huge draw, not only for audiences but also for actors who have clambered to play in his works – and East has been amongst the most popular. East is a sharp, funny, explicit, rollercoasting invention of poetic violence that will leave you breathless. It’s London in the 1970s and Mike, Les and Sylv are fighting for their youth. Filling their days with sex and violence, they battle both the
8 | LATEST 7
boredom they fear and the inevitable future they see in their parents, ultimately finding that history is doomed to repeat itself.
“ The most
exciting revival of East since the 25th anniversary tour ”
Berkoff’s first play mixes elegant Shakespearean verse with profane cockney slang, creating a violent, dark and beautiful language to tell a blistering tale of growing up and rites of passage in London’s East End. This is the world of the havenots where then, as now, the poorest are invisible until they explode in rage.
Brighton actor Karl Kennedy Williams (Mike in East) says: “This is a play that really pushes the boundaries of PC and basically says how it really is, rightly or wrongly. Can a play written 42 years ago still be relevant in 2017? YES! East is a play that challenges the very social comfort we feel we live in and asks the difficult questions we can be afraid to ask.” Brighton theatre company Snowdrop Productions originally presented East at the Brighton Fringe 2016, receiving rave 5 star reviews, universal acclaim from audiences and a nomination for Best Show on the Fringe. This revival, with the original cast, plays for two nights at Theatre Royal Brighton. elebrating 50 years in the music business and looking and sounding half her age, Arnold began her show with a dynamic tribute to former boss Tina Turner. She'd borrowed Steve Craddock's band, who provided the perfect backing for her powerful vocals as she worked through her 'lost' album from the late 60s, which has just been released, alongside the classic hits penned by the likes of Steve Marriott and Mick Jagger. Like Edwin Starr she has been adopted by the UK as our own Queen of Soul and judging by tonight's stellar performance she'll reign supreme for many years to come. Kevin comes clean, or does he?
S
o finally he comes out, after years of speculation and rumour Kevin Spacey is out. Out and apologising for having made what it would seem were sexual advances on a teenage boy. The story is pretty ripe, Star Trek star Anthony Rapp has gone on the record saying that Spacey made what were clearly in his mind a sexual approach at Spacey’s New York apartment when he was 14 years old. Well hooray Kevin, but what took you so long? And for that matter what did you think was okay about making sexual advances to a minor, a 14 year old? And of course, why now?
“ Help rid the film industry of homophobia ” Well in view of the fact that Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been so thoroughly disgraced in the last few weeks, maybe Kevin is trying to stay ahead of the onslaught, because let’s face it, I bet Mr Weinstein is not the only tinsel town predator who will be accused of inappropriate sexual behaviour in the next few months. The evidence against Weinstein seems pretty strong, but his attitude to the accusations appears to be rather egotistical and again inappropriate. As for Mr Spacey, well shame on you. Okay, I understand the pressure that an actor might have felt to stay in the closet, well I
understand it to a certain extent. Maybe coming out could damage the career of a Hollywood star… no hang on, he wouldn’t be the first and with the horrible truth that finally destroyed Rock Hudson, the years of personal damage that he endured before finally coming out, well surely there was a lesson to be learnt? And since then the world has not only accepted a whole tranche of gay actors who have proved that as actors, they are more than capable of playing roles that are heterosexual quite convincingly. I mean if they cannot do that then what kind of an actor are they. Acting is make believe after all. So hats off to all those out actors who do what they do as gay men and women in an industry that in the past has been internally rather accepting of homosexuality albeit in a rather cloak and dagger manner. In a statement made on Twitter Spacey has said that he is “sorry for the feelings he [Rapp] describes having carried with him all these years” and said that he wanted to deal with the allegations honestly. “As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women.” He added: “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this openly and honestly and that starts with examining my own behaviour.” It’s a start Kevin, maybe you can help more, help rid the film industry of homophobia or in truth of any kind of sexual oppression.
