I
T
do love Christmas. Sometimes I think I love the anticipation even more than the event itself. Which might explain why I’m thinking about it when it’s still November and not complaining with everyone else about how the adverts on telly have suddenly got tinsel in them. I like to make a dent in my Christmas shop throughout the year if I can, so as to be able to get just the right present for just the right person, as it occurs to me. My godson has had a signed copy of Eddie Izzard’s autobiography tucked away in a corner of a chest for him since the “coveredinbees” one toured a few months ago. Plus, ‘tis the season for me to start turning up at craft fairs and setting up stall with my homemade knits. The chill has started, the heating is on, and I’m knitting bed socks in front of The Walking Dead merrily. With all of this in mind, it’s hardly surprising that I’m thrilled to have the chance to check out even more Christmas goodies in this week’s gift guide (p6). My interest has been piqued by promises of retro treats and Brighton board games. More tailored presents for family and friends seem to be appearing on my horizon. The weeks go by so very quickly throughout the year, I just don’t want to blink and miss these ones. It’s colder and darker, the days are shorter, I’ll sneeze on Tuesday and by the time someone has said “bless you” it’s Thursday already. I’m not mad on shopping crowds either, so it completely suits me to get all of my prep ready and done for Christmas before the hoards hit their stride and panic starts to arrive at the corner of friends’ eyes. So join me for a mince pie now. It’s delicious.

here are three pillars of veganism: Ethics, environment, health. ‘Ethics’ addresses the ethical argument of eating and torturing another conscious being. If the word ‘torturing’ seems extreme to you then I challenge you to sit through more than ten minutes of uncensored slaughterhouse footage. The only way you can truly believe an animal has a lower level of consciousness than humans and therefore does not feel emotion, or suffer from the horrific conditions of animal agriculture, is if you have ignored all scientific discovery for the last fifty years. Animals have been shown to be both empathetic and intelligent, which is more than can be said for humanity. The ‘environmental’ pillar consists of battling the gargantuan environmental crisis the animal agriculture industry is having on our planet. Fun facts time! Did you know, factory farming accounts for 37 per cent of methane (CH4) emissions, which has more than 20 times the global warming potential of CO2? The animal agriculture industry has a far bigger impact on global warming than all motor vehicular emissions combined! How about the fact that the Amazon rainforest is home to 10 per cent of the world's known biodiversity, and 91 per cent of Amazon rainforest deforestation is caused by livestock. On average the size of 50 football pitches is destroyed every single minute, and as many as 137 plant, animal and insect species are lost forever due to the rampant mindless destruction. On top of that the Amazon is known as the lungs of the earth as it produces approximately 10 per cent of the oxygen on earth; by killing it we are quite literally killing ourselves. ‘Health’ focuses on the undeniable detrimental effects a meat and animal products heavy diet has on your body, and how a vegan diet is the ultimate diet that your body can consume. If everything you've read so far is shocking, how about if I told you that not only was it totally unnecessary, it was also directly detrimental to our health and lifespan. Is taste really worth killing ourselves? LATEST 7/HOMES

Andrew Kay talks to Oliver de Trafford on the tenth anniversary of his popular Moksha Caffe
A
What brings loyal customers back time and time again? Our customers are very loyal, and many have been coming since day one. I think part of why they come is the consistency we try to achieve, the friendly personal service
s Moksha Caffe celebrates its tenth anniversary Andrew Kay, Latest 7’s food editor, talked to Oliver de Trafford about his caffe, one of the city’s favourite eateries. What inspired you? It’s was always a dream of mine, from a young age, to have my own restaurant. After years of different experiences in hospitality the trading hours of a typical modern cafe appealed to me and with help from my family, Moksha was born. Had you always been passionate about food? I grew up in the Mediterranean, so food was always a big part of daily life with plenty of fresh local ingredients. Great cakes have long been at the core of your menu, when did you first start baking? My mum made fantastic birthday cakes for us, always a different theme, and one of the first cookbooks I had aged 9 was a book on baking. One of the first things I made was pizza dough followed by plenty of sponges and other delights. After catering college, I didn’t do much baking until we opened Moksha and I got back into it again. Since then the menu has expanded massively and now offers a fully rounded choice. Do you still make most of the food in your own kitchen? About four years ago we decided to rebuild the kitchen as we felt we could offer so 4 | LATEST 7
When you opened did you have the intention of taking the brand beyond Brighton, or are you happy running the one well formed restaurant? We did initially have plans to open more but the costs and risks of opening a business like this are huge, and it also takes a lot of hard work and commitment to maintain the high standards. I think customers like the idea of having the owner on site. We still have scope to grow, especially in the evenings when the shop is closed, so perhaps we might try a supper club pop up. If the right opportunity came along then who knows, but for now I am happy with the one.
school and I still work weekends, but I have a great team – especially my righthand man Sky who I have worked with on and off for 14 years. And who knows, maybe one day my son Leo will want to come and start on the potwash. The cafe has always had a smart and contemporary feel. Is this an important part of staying ahead of the game? We have changed our interior considerably over the last few years with the influence of my Swedish partner, and after ten years things need a little updating which is important in this competitive market. The city is full of coffee places, what makes yours special? Our coffee is roasted in Littlehampton by another small family business, and we have a great working relationship. It’s our own blend, roasted fresh for us every week. The passion they have comes through in the finished product. You also stock a variety of coffeerelated items for sale. Is this something that you will continue to offer your customers? Yes, we sell a range of coffee and tea as well as equipment
“ Our seeded
cookies are a customer favorite. I don’t dare take them away ”
much more than just sandwiches and quiches. I guess it was the chef in me that partly inspired the change. It was definitely the right decision, and the business has grown because of it. We still make everything in our kitchen using fresh local ingredients, and it's all cooked to order. What are your favourite dishes and are they the most popular with your customers? I love spicy food, and my two favourites are huevos rancheros and huevos Benedictos (our take on an eggs benedict but with a bit of spice). These are probably our most popular outside of the Moksha breakfast.
and we are always adapting to keep our offer fresh.
and various filter papers for customers to enjoy at home.
Are there things on the menu that are so well loved that you simply cannot take them off? Our seeded cookies, which we have made since the beginning are a customer favorite. I don’t dare take them away.
Are you doing anything special at the caffe this Christmas? We have a Christmas menu available through December for parties of 12 or more and private hire in the evening.
You are very much hands on, still working in the kitchen and baking. How do you manage these demands now you have a young family? It’s not just a job but a passion for me. I love working and take great satisfaction from seeing our customers enjoying what we do. I have a young son now so it presents different challenges, especially since he started
What are your plans for the next ten years? The next ten years... more of the same, keep focused on what we do well and try to grow the business, always looking for new ideas and opportunities and who knows – maybe another Moksha. Proud Country House in Stanmer Park launches a new classic dining Restaurant, Source, from 24 November
S
ource – offering a seasonal British menu with fish, meat and fresh produce sourced from within a 20mile radius – launches on Friday 24th November. Simply and beautifully cooked, and served at a price that is fair for everyone from producer to guest, the quality of Source is matched by the sumptuous surroundings in which it’s served. A stunning, restored Grade 1 listed Georgian country house, Proud Country House sits in acres of unspoilt Sussex countryside. Juxtaposing antiques and reclamation yard finds combine with 70s glamour and modern patterns. Roaring fires and historical touches add a luxury not easily found in Brighton. Head Chef James Mitchell, who joins Proud Country House after 25 years working in some of the best restaurants in the country including The Savoy Hotel and Hilton Park Lane, is behind this new ‘farm to fork’ offering. Since moving to Brighton, James’ love for his new local area inspired the idea of creating a restaurant which pipes a real fanfare about the produce of the county and offers the people of Sussex their new favourite Brighton haunt.
“ Enthusiasm for lovinglymade food shines through in the new menu ” Some of items you may discover on the autumn menu include pickled and grilled south coast mackerel, beef rib on the bone, game chips with pepper sauce and the very best pork scratchings going. For those after something lighter, there is a menu full of healthy, vegetarian or plantbased options such as the jampacked wheatberry, roast parsnip, butternut squash and dried cranberry, chicory, watercress and Brighton Blue salad. For those preferring lighter, informal dining, Source’s Grazing Menu is served in the library and bar 7 days a week for lunch. Source is available Monday – Thursday (and Sunday) 12 – 4pm and Friday and Saturdays from 12 – 10pm. KEMP TOWN TREASURES Brighton Christmas shopping without the stress – Mission Impossible? Charlotte Landsmann thinks not, as she explores some of the hidden retail gems to be found in our city
I
decided I’d had enough of fighting with others just to get stuck in a checkout queue. Not one of the joys of Christmas. So I decided to explore what else is out there in Brighton, and hit the jackpot! It’s a weird old road – crazy fun along St James St, then cafes, cocktails, flea markets, antiques… but few people get further down. St James St and St Georges merge into each other, but stop and start with bits of residential coverage. The trick is to keep going to the old Kemptown village! I started exploring at Kerfuffle. A great little independent card and gift shop with lots you can’t find elsewhere. A badge saying ‘Whitehawk Actually?’ anyone?! Priceless. Immediately on to Pardon My French – beautiful bits and pieces, including retro quality toys, some great homewares – tres tres chic! Next door, The Vintage Workshop – classy and cool – some fascinating designer jewellery, handmade textile pieces, vintage and retro finds. Hey – this is getting good now! I may have found a secret of Brighton!
“ Vintage and retro finds ” Over the junction – one of the BEST charity shops for those who know – Marie Curie, loads of bargains – wow. Then I spotted something bright pink – has to be good – hey, it’s Barbary Lane! I’ve heard of this one. Seriously funky – their strapline is “strictly no beige”. Accessories agogo with extraordinary oneoffs, designer art pieces, bespoke formal hats, but also surprisingly affordable bits of fun – clipin glittery cat ears and handknitted shark hats anyone? Such fun, and great customer service. Next door, lovely established florist Wendy Kelly Flowers with seasonal wreaths and indoor/outdoor beauties. Opposite, Bedfords Hardware – a lot more than nails, who knew? Some really ontrend homewares, candles, cookware. Next door, The Trading Post, an absolute cornucopia of units with handmade, upcycled and retro clothes and jewellery, bricabrac and to diefor retro furniture. And a great little genuinely French bistro/community cafe inside, Cup of Joe’s. Exhausted but happy, I fall into the local pub The Barley Mow, to find the gorgeous smell of mulled cider brewing, candlelight and a secret beer garden. My mission is complete – this is definitely the secret of Christmas shopping in Brighton. If you want to escape the usual mill, support small friendly independent traders and explore the secrets of Brighton – East Kemptown Village is it!

ANDREW KAY Dines Out Looking to the future
F
or the last month or so my favourite Japanese restaurant has been undergoing a massive expansion. Moshimo in Bartholomews Square has increased its footprint massively in a move to cater for their ever expanding client base, and it looks great. It’s the first stage of their expanding dream and I can personally say that I cannot wait for them to actually open their planned sky bar and dining room, an exciting piece of architecture that will rise above the city and offer stunning views to match their food. This week they are hosting their event The Great Moshimo Vegan Challenge, an event which earned them a prestigious PETA award for the promotion of plantbased eating. For one night only, Brighton’s most celebrated chefs come under one roof to create Japaneseinspired plantbased dishes to be voted on by customers. Amongst those attending will be chefs from awardwinning 64 Degrees, Silo, and Chilli Pickle. Joining them will be VBites, Cashew Catering, CanTina, Purezza, Market, and newcomer to the Brighton restaurant scene, Pike and Pine.

“ We’re keen on promoting not just
sustainable, but what we call restorativeeating ”
The event, which has become an eagerly anticipated fixture for vegans and nonvegans alike, was set up by Moshimo in 2009 to demonstrate what its menu might look like in the future if fish stocks continue to deplete at the present rate. Moshimo became known for its work in fish sustainability due to its high profile Fishlove campaign, a series of photographs featuring naked celebrities with fish which became one of the most successful campaigns ever to end overfishing. The images, including those of Helena BonhamCarter, Dame Judi Dench, Mark Rylance, Gillian Anderson, Julie Christie, Lizzie Jagger, Sir Richard Branson and Sir Ben Kingsley, were shown on the front covers of the media across the world many times over. They are credited as being instrumental in some big wins for ocean conservationists. “We’re keen on promoting not just sustainable, but what we call restorativeeating, a type of ethical consumption which aims not just to make the environment sustainable, but to actually restore and improve it – to give back more than we take away,” says Nicholas Röhl, coowner with Karl Jones. “Scientists believe that the world’s oceans will be without fish by the middle of this century if fishing methods do not change substantially. Demand for fish continues to grow, and the methods for catching fish remain unsustainable, so we’re keen to look at approaches to protect fish stocks for future generations,” says Karl Jones. “One of the ways we can do this is to increase the amount of plantbased food and decrease the amount of animal or fish protein on our plate. We hold the vegan challenge to get people to imagine what Moshimo might be like if overfishing continues to deplete the world’s fish stocks. We are delighted that the success of the previous challenge has even contributed to us winning the prestigious PETA ‘Proggy’ award.” This event is an annual sell out but worth a last minute try. £35 (£30 Moshimo Members). 7pm, Weds 22 November. The classic Christmas tale in a historical setting
C
harles Dickens in creating a Christmas Carol gave us what has become the very best and most poignant of festive tales. Ghosts lead Scrooge on a memorable journey, past, present and future to make him realise and embrace the spirit of Christmas, and it is a timeless tale of greed and redemption that never fails to work, which is no doubt why it has been adapted for film and stage so many times. Now after a successful UK tour over Christmas 2016, European Arts Company return with their authentic adaptation of A Christmas Carol. You may be unaware that Charles Dickens originally wanted to be an actor and A Christmas Carol was the first public performance he gave of his own work. After his opening night he said The success was most wonderful and prodigious – perfectly overwhelming and astounding altogether! Dickens enacted the work over 150 times and the effect on the public was phenomenal; he had a magnetic stage presence, riveting eyes,
16 | LATEST 7
expressive voice and wonderful powers of characterisation. Remarkably, Dickens made more money from his readings than all his novels and stories put together.
“ I love Christmas, don't you Mr Scrooge? ” “ Bah Humbug ”
This exciting production, adapted from Dickens’ own public reading scripts and eyewitness accounts of him on stage, recreates the spirit of Dickens’ original performances. Actor, John O’Connor lives in Rochester where Dickens grew up and set many of his stories including Great Expectations, David Copperfield, The Pickwick Papers and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. O’Connor says, “I’m delighted to be touring again in A Christmas Carol. Dickens himself toured all over the UK and America performing the story and it’s
wonderful to follow in his legendary footsteps. The reaction to the show last year was a delight and there will be laughs, tears and plenty of Christmas cheer.” Dickens was passionately interested in the welfare of the poor and children in particular and many of his early readings were for charity. Doctor Thomas Barnardo was a contemporary of Dickens and was inspired to set up his first Ragged School partly as a result of Dickens’ writings and campaigning. This tour is in aid of the children’s charity Barnardo’s. The 2017 tour includes Brighton where Dickens himself did a reading at the Brighton Pavilion on 9 November 1861. Sue Westbury, from Barnardo’s says: “We are delighted that A Christmas Carol is touring once again to delight theatre goers in the run up to Christmas. Barnardo’s supports the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children across the UK and Christmas is a poignant time to remember those children and young people who are less fortunate. We are grateful to European Arts Company for supporting Barnardo’s and helping to raise vital funds. This Christmas, experience what it must have been like to be in the audience in the 1800s.” What better way to enjoy a seasonal treat in the spirit of Christmas past, present and future. 13–14 December, The Music Room, Brighton Royal Pavilion, £22.50, members £20, (includes an interval glass of white wine/soft drink in the Banqueting Room). REVIEW Jon Ronson: The Psychopath Test
F
rom a jumping off point where Jon Ronson establishes himself as “not a psychopath” just a socially awkward person, it soon becomes clear that diagnosis holds a key place in tonight’s talk. An engaging and thought provoking evening, with guests Mary Turner Thomson and Eleanor Longden bringing invaluable contributions on the subject of diagnosis of not just psychopathy and the harm and help it can bring in their interview slots. Ronson piqued engagement with detail, and comprehension with examples that were not just sensationalised but stood in a framework of symptoms and behaviours. Conculding with a Q&A with all three speakers, this was an evening that sparked curiosity, intelligence and more. Brighton Dome, 13 November 2017

ahahaha, ridiculous you may think, but with the rampant topic of gender fluidity flooding the media right now it seems possible. It’s hard to pick up a paper, look online or watch TV without someone voicing opinion about the age old subject of dressing up – and let us not forget that, although for a great many, dressing in men’s or women’s clothing is to do with feeling that you have been assigned by nature the wrong body, for some it is seen as fun.
“ Maybe there should be a national
cross dressing day, a day of support from and for the whole community ” It’s a truth that for those who feel that they are wrongly gendered, seeing people cross dressing for fun and of course for entertainment might be hurtful, of course it will. But it’s nothing new, men have been dressing as women for all kinds of reasons for as long as history has been recorded. Women have dressed as men too, Jean d’Arc certainly used cross dressing to achieve her goals and let’s not forget the oppressive ruling in theatre that for many years meant that only men could be play female roles, a concept that is now being redressed by gender blind casting in productions of classics.
And where does it leave the rich vein of drag? Drag is a massively important part of LGBT+ history and culture, one that peppers the gay scene in a flurry of sequins and lamé. I have both loved and hated drag over the years, some is good and some less so, and I would hate to see it banned. I would certainly outlaw rampant misogyny for certain but I would protect the concept and I am delighted to see the reemergence of drag kings as part of our culture. I have dressed up in female attire, I went to my 18th birthday part dressed as Shirley Temple and was for a year the Alternative Miss Brighton. I enjoyed a wonderful evening of cross dressing fun – and I mean FUN, and I certainly meant no disrespect to either women or anyone who was undergoing or had undertaken a transition. Dressing up though is a part of growing up, of creative development and expression and should not be confused with anything else. In fact, by making dressing up an issue we are building prejudice and driving people into the shadows. Maybe there should be a national cross dressing day, a day of support from and for the whole community for those who want to be seen for what they are – simply ordinary human beings some of whom prefer to have some fluidity about their mode of dress and some who genuinely know that they are living in the wrongly gendered body. Whichever, it is surely time to live and let live!
