The point of the pointless
Getting the right balance
W
I
hen I first moved to Brighton, many years ago, I signed up for a life drawing class. I’ve always found the reassuring lines of the edges of people and the stillness of a longer pose to be a world I can happily get lost in. And I didn’t know many people. I can’t say I stayed in touch with anyone from the class, not that there was anything wrong with any of them, it just wasn’t that kind of group. What I did keep from the experience was the sudden surprise and realisation that I was studying something with absolutely no career or academic benefit whatsoever. Which was kind of liberating. It’s opened up the start of my pointless creative moments, which couldn’t be more fun. I will admit that I do have to stop myself periodically from making it useful – or pointful. I’ve been trained to be costconscious in this ongoing austerity (hateful word!), so it feels counterintuitive to simply make stuff up with no agenda in mind. Most of the time I end up with a compromise, picking up inexpensive materials on a whim and letting my mind drift as to how I might use them. Last weekend a friend came round for dinner and a film only to be greeted by three bowls – one of brooch backs, the second of leftover yarn, and the third of a collection of small Scrabble letters with stickyback adhesives. We made personalised badges whilst the shepherds pie baked. Every 80s montage – eat your hearts out. It’s silly but it’s freeing. Going to a tango class with a mate, buying glitter and cartridge paper, just the feel of pulling the quickdrying Copydex off my fingertips – it’s easy to forget how accessible this level of silly joy can be. So buy your Christmas cards, but maybe make a couple too. For yourself.

n this current world we are forced to focus on our own worlds. Our family, our friends, our job, our life becomes our focus, and anything outside of our immediate world is put at a distance. This means that working on projects for the betterment of humanity both locally and globally is far more difficult because mobilising and collaborating is limited to a small familiar circle. But as creatures capable of collaboration our collective power is an overwhelming force. We have the ability to alter the reality of the entire globe if properly coordinated. Humans are responsible for the entire modern technological world as we know it today. If we redirect that power into more ethical, sustainable, and ecologically integrated innovations we can redesign the world with ingenious technologies that work with our planet and our best interest rather than against it. The key is to unify the mental consciousness of all of humanity. Until we are unified as one collective body we will be unable to bring proper harmony to our entire planet. Humans must return to the balance of the natural and spiritual world and realign itself with nature. One part of this is recognising ourselves as humans and earthlings. We have forgotten a time before nationality, gender, sexuality, and the cruel irony is that we are consumed by identification in an age of identity crisis and we wonder why that is without realising that it is simply because we are divided rather than unified as a whole. The beginning of the agricultural revolution took humanity away from the heart of nature and we stopped being able to hear the song of Mother Earth and the universe. But we are beginning to hear again. The signs are everywhere: the dramatic rise in veganism and the resistance against mass animal genocide, the explosion of attention to new age spirituality, the incredibly exciting new union of science and spirituality occurring in countless overlapping fields of studying. Humanity has been astray in a deep and intense stretch of apathy and invention, now we return to our true selves, empathy and intuition. LATEST 7/HOMES

AIR PLAY
A stunning mix of clowning, circus and more brings wonder to the festive season
T
his Christmas, enter a world of flying umbrellas, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen. Air Play, coming to Brighton Dome Concert Hall from Thursday 21 December to Tuesday 26 December, brings to life the very air we breathe, weaving together breathtaking circus, comedy and dazzling scenic effects for a family show that captures both the wonder and the excitement of the season. Two siblings set out on an unforgettable adventure in which the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary, and air, wind and space become agents of astonishment. In epic setpieces of uncommon beauty, fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, and confetti turns into the night sky. Through it all, laughoutloud comedy is never far away. Acrobuffos, the company behind the show, consists of husband and wife clown partners Seth Bloom & Christina Gelsone, who are based in New York but met at a circus in Afghanistan. Since becoming clown partners in 2006, they have created five shows together, competed in international circus festivals, and their wordless shows have been performed in over 18 countries. The New York Times profiled Seth & Christina in 2009 and created an informative 3 minute video about the couple that you can watch at goo.gl/UZwXEr.
“ Breathtaking circus, comedy and dazzling scenic effects ” Seth is a former professional juggler who graduated from three clown schools and makes each clown mask by hand. Christina is a former professional ballerina who graduated from Princeton to become a clown. They continue to teach social circus in post conflict zones, and have remained dedicated to projects in Afghanistan with the Mobile Mini Circus for Children. Air Play was devised through years of experimentation with simple materials, movement and technology and has played around the globe, from Teatro del Lago in Chile to Shanghai’s Grand Theatre. Reviews have been positive: British Theatre Guide enthused that “Air Play holds the entire audience in the palm of its outstretched hand”, whereas Sydney Morning Herald lauded the show as “a joy from start to finish, Air Play will entrance children and act as a great reset button for stressed adults”. If you’re searching for a big, bold and beautiful show for all the family this Christmas then Air Play could be the flight of fancy you’re looking for. Head to goo.gl/umemnS to check out a trailer which gives a good impression of the colour, movement and joy of the work. With visual images seemingly sewn from the sky, this poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify both the young and the youngatheart. Dines Out
THE
Petit Pois
H
ow does one define fashionable small plate dining? You know the thing, a range of dishes ideally meant for sharing. In some cases it can be genius, but I have to admit than in others it simply strikes me as a way of the restaurant getting away with tiny portions, and I mean tiny. These days the fashion is most definitely one of less is more, when good very good, but when not so good... well let’s just say one can go hungry. Petit Pois is fairly new, a tiny venue but one with a huge future if our lunch was anything to go by. And yes the small plate thing is in place, although not too small as we were to discover. There is an element of tapas style dining here, although the plating leans far more to fine dining and the core of the food is French and classic. We were hungry and tempted by an amazing selection of charcuterie and cheeses, but in the end we went for the lunch menu, three courses for £13.50. And there were six dishes to choose from so we ordered one of each, well Ms L and I are old friends and happy to cohabit a bowl of soup. And what a bowl of soup, velvety smooth broccoli with Stilton and buttery croutons, full of flavour and generous in size. So too was a pork rillette, deliciously soft, beautifully seasoned and refreshingly un greasy, served with sourdough toasts and cornichons – we were more than happy. Next a fillet of sea bream on herbed mash, both parts quite brilliantly cooked and again decent in size. To be honest I have been served a similar portion of fish in the centre of a huge plate and billed as a main course with a hefty price tag. It matched well a bowl of plump mussels with lardons in a creamy broth that I polished off with a spoon. I love mussels, as does Ms L, and we ate them with gusto, but neither of us thinking that the portion, shared, was too small. To follow a steak, onglet, cooked just right, properly rested and snuggled against a mound of perfect crisp fries, a small well dressed salad and a béarnaise sauce of an impeccable pedigree. We talk a lot when together but these kept us very quiet and took us back in time to our French memories of great, but simple cuisine. The final dish was a barley risotto, a big comforting bowl of tender grains and finely diced vegetables that was equally packed with flavour, very satisfying indeed. And for all six dishes, a glass of good Picpoul and service we sailed home at just over £20 each, full of good food, good cheer and reminded that sometimes the classics are king. There’s some classy cooking coming out of this petit kitchen and no sense that they are taking the pois.

REVIEW Henning Wehn – Westphalia is Not An Option
W
ehn’s observational humour about the cultural and social differences between the UK and Germany has been tickling audiences’ funny bones for almost 15 years but have taken on even sharper relief in light of last year’s Brexit vote. This new show of two halves was a warmup of familiar territory before moving onto new material in the second act. Wehn makes some astute points about immigrants and whether he is regarded as one himself, and there were some genuinely funny, yet slightly awkward, commentaries about political correctness and the way we now observe the world. While undoubtedly amusing, Wehn felt less confident. Whether this is because he’s aware that his audience is heavily divided on the subject is unclear, but the Brighton crowd were fully behind him shouting out “Refugees welcome!” Here’s hoping his important message of tolerance reaches those that need to hear it, through the power of comedy. very few weeks I am joined in the Latest TV studio by a man who I now consider to be a friend. The Reverend Michael Hydes is the minister at The Village Metropolitan Community Church in Brighton’s Kemp Town. He joins me for recordings of Queer Say, our discussion programme that looks at global LGBT+ issues and he brings a sense of balanced reason to every episode. That and a sense of humour. It’s great to share the stage with a man of faith. I grew up involved in the church partly because I believed and partly because in a small village outside a small town the church was the
“ I now question my decision as a
teenage boy to join a military styled church youth organisation ” only way to have any kind of social life. I didn’t think of it in that way at the time, but in hindsight it certainly played a part. I now question my decision as a teenage boy to join a military styled church youth organisation, especially one with a marching bagpipe band! I left pretty soon when I saw that the moral code employed by the leaders could be influenced by how welltodo one’s parents were perceived to be – a long story that I will happily tell if you bump into me.
Back to Michael and to faith. I respect Michael’s faith wholeheartedly, he is gentle and sincere. More importantly he listens and so far has never tried to bulldoze his beliefs into the programme or indeed into my life. Nor does he disrespect my lack of faith. In a way I envy him. I envy his faith or more specifically I respect and envy that he has a faith, something to genuinely believe in, something that he uses for the greater good. There’s no biblebashing, lecternthumping evangelical clap trap, but there are some very pure Christian values and it makes me realise that perhaps after a childhood steeped in religion, at church and at school, I am something else. Could I be a Christian who does not believe in god? Does that exist as a concept? I sort of hope it does, and at the same time I hope it does not because if it does – and it is an attractive option – then before you know it, it could become a new kind of church. I’m now so uncomfortable with churches and what in so many cases and over centuries is done in their names, whatever faith they might be, and there are plenty to choose from. Michael talks of truth, truths being at the heart of good, and as I get to know him I think he is right. Live as true a life as you can, be true to one another, and hope that others will be true to you.
