Adventure time

Key to the door

n the radio I heard that one way to keep your brain active, to stop it getting into a rut and veering towards anxiety or depression, is to try new things. I like to think of this as ‘adventuring’. We all live busy lives, and to be honest I thought I was already adventuring quite a bit. I regularly go out to dose myself up with the best medicine – laughter, natch – and have been keeping my hands busy, first to avoid smoking and then to avoid being surgically attached to my smartphone, for years. Also Charlie Brooker told me on a documentary once that knitting was used as an antidepressant for the veterans of the First World War coming back with shellshock. It’s the repetitive movement y’see. Although Brooker’s argument then transposed that on to console games, but I digress. The fact is, I do stuff. It was only when I was being hit in the face by a jet of water as a reward for my good marksmanship on the pier, that I realised I don’t actually do new stuff all that frequently. My cousin had come down for a small family lunch gathering at The Chilli Pickle, and as the rest of our party drifted off back to work, we drifted off to the seafront and the pier’s arcades. It was he who suggested we have a go at the redneck shooting gallery. Here’s a tip: pay heed to those signs warning about the water features, they’re not just for effect. Doing something new hits a restart button, and it doesn’t have to cost the Earth (although anyone who wants to introduce me to hot air ballooning is hotly encouraged). It’s worth having a few adventuring ideas on the backburner, and possibly a towel too. Just in case.

Victoria Nangle

ast week I turned 21.

When I turned twenty it was momentous because I was finally leaving my teens behind and beginning my twenties, the epic decade, the glory days. But for some reason the zero weighed heavy. I felt as if being on the very cusp meant I wasn't actually properly in my twenties. Now, with that added one at the end of my age I don’t feel that at all any more. Whenever I mention my age in conversation I’m surprised at how old I sound. No doubt I’m sure it sounds ridiculous – a twenty one year old saying they feel old, but everything’s relative and I’m the oldest I’ve ever been right now! Growing up with three older siblings meant the twenties always felt so far away in my future, and now I’m here I have to keep reminding myself that I’m a fully fledged certified adult now. In age that is. The goal of my twenties is clearly going to be to earn the right to call myself a proper adult. I may have circled the sun a couple of times now, but adulthood is a skill that you have to learn and practice. With the weekly shop I have to plan my meals before I go, otherwise I don’t know what I’m buying. But if I buy fresh ingredients I don’t always know which nights I’m going to be in so they go bad before I can use them. And as much as I’d love to cook extravagant meals a lot of the time I don’t have the time and energy to put lots of separate things together when I can have one quick instant thing instead. And joy of joys it seems this is what it’s like in every other single aspect of adulthood too. But it’s okay, because I’m excited for the transformation it will bring. I’ve enjoyed the leisurely years I’ve spent in my early life, but call it getting older but I can feel myself ready to knuckle down, to focus in, to start living to my fullest potential. You get out of life what you put in, and I think I’m ready to start putting in as much as I’ve got.

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN Starring Christopher Harper, John Middleton, Jack Ashton & Hannah Tointon

A

major new production of Strangers On A Train will steam into theatres across the UK next year: opening at Theatre Royal Brighton on Friday 5 January. This production is presented by the team behind the critically acclaimed and successful tour of Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight, which played in Brighton in January.

“ This spine chilling tale will delight audiences with its marriage of dark wit and edgeoftheseat tension ”

A masterful and gripping thriller, Strangers On A Train is based on the psychological drama by the celebrated writer Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr Ripley, Carol) and immortalised by Alfred Hitchcock’s Academy Award winning film. The all star cast is led by John Middleton who left Emmerdale earlier this year in a deeply moving storyline, having played the village’s beloved Vicar Ashley Thomas for over 20 years. John is

joined by Christopher Harper, known as Coronation Street’s Nathan Curtis; Jack Ashton, whose credits include Call The Midwife and Hannah Tointon, famed for her roles in Mr Selfridge, The Inbetweeners and Hollyoaks. Strangers On A Train was written by Craig Warner and based on the world renowned 1950 novel by Patricia Highsmith, latterly made universally famous by the classic Alfred Hitchcock film. In the great tradition of Hitchcock, this spine chilling tale will delight audiences with its marriage of dark wit and edgeoftheseat tension. If you enjoyed the recent film version of Murder On The Orient Express, you won’t want to miss this classic thriller live on stage. What better way is there to add some excitement to a January evening? C H E S N E Y H AW K E S From his ‘One And Only’ roots to working with John Bishop on telly, and his panto present, Chesney Hawkes answers questions from Victoria Nangle, talking freely about being accident prone, entrepreneurial fans, and his love of the Christmas pantomime Hi Chesney, how are you today? I'm doing fabulous. How are you doing? Good, thank you. What's the most unusual experience you've ever had with a fan? God, I have so many of those – we could be here all day. Well, back in the early days we had this one girl… well, we used to have girls that camped outside our house. And one of them rang the bell and asked my Mum if she could use the toilet, because she was desperate to use the toilet. And my Mum didn't normally let people in the house but this girl was kind of desperate so she let her in. She came into the toilet, she used the loo, and while she was in there she stole a roll of loo paper – and then was selling off sheets at a pound a pop. She was then known as Belinda Bogroll. It's a funny one. It's great to be able to see you in Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. What are your favourite parts of the panto tradition? I particularly love the audience participation, to be honest

with you. I've had all sorts of amazing things happen with audiences in panto, that you never get at normal theatre productions. I'll tell a little story: I had my little girl. When she was four years old she came to see me in panto. I was right at the

And she said: "I've got an ice cream!!!!" And it got the biggest applause of the whole night – the whole run probably. So it's just those kind of moments about panto that you couldn't get anywhere else.

“ My co star kind of looked at me as if

to say – 'I think you'd better do something about this' ” front of the stage with my leading lady, and just in that close moment when we were about to kiss she said: "Daddy!" And I tried to ignore it and carry on with the scene, but she said: "Daddy!!!" And my co star's looking at me, and some of the crowd are laughing a little bit. And it got too much in the end and my co star kind of looked at me as if to say – 'I think you'd better do something about this'. So I kind of turned around and said: "Yes, Darling?"

Which of the seven dwarves' names do you most identify with and why? Oh Clumsy! By a million miles, yeah. You might get to know me you've got to be careful with me (laughing). You acted previously in the drama comedy Panto! playing a version of yourself – do you think that might've given you some inkling as to what to expect from the season? Well that was with John Bishop and the first time I ever did panto was with John, before he was famous – he

wasn’t even on the poster. There was another comic above him on the bill. I know John very well. And John knows me as the clumsiest man alive. We'd, like, fall off the stage and.. y'know all sorts of things happened during that panto. So when he wrote the film he had me breaking my leg, falling offstage, I was in a wheelchair at one time… so *hopefully* none of that's going to happen on this run. Having had a go at The Games, Let's Dance For Comic Relief, Dancing On Ice – each bringing you unexpected injury – do you think you'd have a go at I'm A Celebrity… or another reality TV show and chance the insurance? Yeah. It's a very very good question. I don't think I'll do anything that's going to be too physical anymore, because yes I do obviously have… it's been a clumsy time. I've broken a leg, I've ruptured ligaments in my ankle, and ripped cartilage out of my hip – and this is all reality TV. So if I did a reality show I think it would have to be something where I'm sitting on a couch. (Laughs) What possibly could go wrong? I said that when I did Masterchef and I nearly chopped my finger off. Ho! ho! ho! And what would you like for Christmas? Ahh. My two front teeth! No – what I'd really like for Christmas is for my family to come and join me here in Worthing. At least for a week. I hope that's going to come true. That is the plan, I'm trying to make that happen. Snow White And The Seven Dwarves, Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, running until 1 January 2018, from £12.50, worthingtheatres.co.uk

Donatello

I

was recently interviewed by the lovely Laura Lockington about my 25 years writing this column and asked some rather probing questions, some of which were clearly pointed at trying to get me to bitch about some rather familiar places. I wasn’t having any of it. Much as I can complain about places that are unjustifiably expensive and pretentious or places that are simply not meeting any sort of standard of food safety and hygiene, I do love places that deliver with honesty good food, whether it be posh nosh, a family feast or a bag of chips. Right now I love BeFries in West Street and all they do is chips, very good ones. I also still love Barnsley’s in Baker Street, so much so that I celebrated my 60th birthday there. It is 25 years since I started doing this and my first ever column was a review of Donatello in the Lanes. I went along with the sadly deceased Louise Rennison, a good friend, and it made the whole thing a delight. Louise was a vegetarian and Donatello was and still is an ideal place for nonmeat eaters whilst at the same time satisfying my inner carnivore. Back then it was a fraction of the size it is now, but it was and still is immaculate, smartly decorated and brilliantly affordable. It is what it is – a friendly family restaurant offering well priced and tasty food. It has changed over the years to reflect fashions in food, but at the core it is much the same as it ever was. I recently went along to a small gathering to taste wines in a new space, a Moncaro wine room, with of course Moncaro wines. It was good fun, the wines are excellent and excellently priced too with a sparkling verdicchio that knocks the bubbles of any prosecco in my view. The evening was hosted by owner and family head Sue Addis. I love Sue, I admire her business acumen and her straightforward attitude. She took me on a quick tour of the premises and I have to say that she never holds back when it comes to keeping the place looking good. And the kitchen, well it is the cleanest commercial kitchen I have ever been in, and I have been in a lot. I wish mine was that immaculate. So 25 years on for me and for Sue and I am delighted to say that it is as valuable a dining asset for the city as ever.

Theatre503 and Sleeping Trees present Cinderella And The Beanstalk

F

rom my very first panto, Tommy Steel in Mother Goose at Liverpool’s Empire theatre, I have been hooked. I love every moment of joyous silliness, every transformation scene, every audience song and spectacular walk down. I may be a fanatic and in many ways I am a purist, I like my panto traditional and even discriminate against the imposters, the Christmas shows that are not pantomimes in the real sense. Then I heard about Cinderella And The Beanstalk… Described as “infectiously bonkers” and “breathtakingly witty”, Cinderella And The Beanstalk is said to be the pantomime to end all pantomimes, and the perfect festive treat for anyone aged 6+ who like their panto with a twist. Well I’m prepared for a twist, why not? Three seemingly unstoppable performers (and one live musician) recreate over 60

characters from more than a dozen classic stories, including Cinderella, Jack And The Beanstalk, Peter Pan, Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and many more. There's anarchy up the

their bit to get in the way, getting her hands on these oversized eggs may not be quite so straightforward... Written by the multi awardwinning physical comedy trio Sleeping Trees (described by Time Out as “the birth child of Monty Python and The League of Gentlemen”) and directed by Tom Attenborough (grandson of the late Sir Richard Attenborough), Cinderella And The Beanstalk was a huge critical and audience hit when it premiered at London's Theatre503 in 2014. Sleeping Trees Executive Director Alice Carter explains how the show differs from traditional panto: “We don't believe that children and adults have a different sense of humours – children don't need to be talked down to, and adults don't need smutty innuendo to laugh. So we decided to write a Christmas show that everyone could enjoy and laugh at together. We wrote the kind of Christmas show we wish we'd been taken to as children and that we want to see now as adults.” Join a brand new cast for 2017 as they recreate every panto character you’d expect to find (and some you might not), and do their best to sing, dance and fight their way through 100 minutes of panto pandemonium.

A

re Gorillaz a band or a brand? Essentially, they’re a curious amalgamation of both, but one that has a surprisingly extensive back catalogue of solid pop hits. The abundant hooks were delivered in a frenetic fashion, with a merry Damon Albarn prancing around the stage alternately singing and playing the odd bit here and there, all jubilant drawl and spry swagger. The live setup was extravagant, featuring two drummers, two keyboardists, backup singers/dancers and an array of guest vocalists. The tonal variety of the performance worked very well, with some fairly fiery hip hop a highlight in the middle, along with some soulful moments in a soul sense, and some soulful moments in a Blurry indie guitar sense too. We were treated to three massive screens and a hydraulic all seeing eye, which showcased the group’s strong visual identity, utilising their memorable videos and bespoke live animations. An energetic performance, brimming with ideas about how to present fairly middle of the road pop rock in a colourful way. Brighton Centre, 27 November

What A Gay Day!

T

his week I met a man from the world of TV who has over the years produced some of the most iconic British TV shows. Tony Nicholson worked on shows like It’s A Knockout and in particular the one where the Royal Family joined in the silliness. I’m sorry, I failed to ask how they all got on with Stuart Hall, I know you will want to know.

“ A flight of fantasy peppered with

figures like Vinegar Vera, Slack Alice and PopItIn Pete” The reason Tony came in to be on AK Soufflé is to talk about a new biography just published called Shut That Door. Now some of you will immediately know who the subject of the book is and I suspect that some of you will be slightly bewildered. But you should know because in my view, many of the great gay comedy voices that we now know would not be there if it hadn’t been for Larry Grayson. Larry Grayson was a remarkable entertainer who was overtly camp from the very start of his career, trawling two acts around the working men’s club circuit, until in the late 1950s when he got his big break into the then dying variety theatre circuit. Amazingly he went on to become a national TV star, eclipsing

even Bruce Forsyth’s success when he took over as host of The Generation Game. There was a defiant mince to his gait, a delicately placed limp wrist, and imperious glances delivered from above his spectacles that he wore on a chain like a dowager’s jewels. His act, never gag based, was a flight of fantasy peppered with characters: Vinegar Vera, Slack Alice and PopItIn Pete and of course Larry’s long time companion Everard. Yes it was a world littered with innuendo and campery that perhaps would now offend the PC sensitive, but it did a wonderful job in exposing a world of gay humour that until then had been something of a clandestine affair. And without it where would Julian Clary and Alan Carr be now? Tony knew Grayson well and has had access to Larry’s own notes whilst writing the book. He has a wealth of detail about Grayson’s career, some anecdotal, some from personal experience but above all he is revealing a rich and too long neglected thread to the story of gay entertainment.
