American whiskey vs Scotch whisky

W

hat do you want for Christmas? It’s either the hardest or the easiest question to answer. I spend the rest of the year politely but firmly telling myself that I don’t need that, training my brain to see shops as art galleries to be enjoyed and occasionally – with due consideration – purchased from. Then, up comes Christmas and I’m having flashbacks to wanting The Big Yellow Teapot again, always my default want as a child that never quite manifested. That’s not to say I was deprived. I had my fill of Strawberry Shortcake figurines and Smurf stickers. Childhood always served up plenty of desires to carefully write on a Christmas list in readiness for enquiring relatives. Our family had a system: my brother and I would each write a list of what we would like – obviously with lots of ‘please’s taken as written – which my mother would then take away and pin up at the back of the airing cupboard. We were not to look at them again. And our Mum could cross out an item every time she gave it as a suggestion to a phoning grandparent, aunt or other relative. Thinking about it now, it was clearly a precursor to an Amazon Wish List – you didn’t expect to get everything on it but you noted down a few suggestions with vague hopes. I send my godson a new book every year at Christmas, and together we’ve embraced literary figures ranging from Artemis Fowl to Katniss Evergreen, right up to last year’s Philip Marlowe. And I’ve loved the research for that particular project. That’s what I want for Christmas! Books and films that I’ve never heard of, or gotten around to, nudged in my direction by a thoughtful friend. Now, what would you like?

n the state of Kentucky the number of full whiskey barrels outnumbers the human population considerably. So, with more than enough to go around it’s no wonder that American whiskey has muscled in to the UK. What really shocked me though, is that American whiskey is now the UK’s fastest growing spirit category. So, why is our western friend challenging the hegemony of scotch? I love American whiskey and even I didn’t realise that it was getting so profitable. To put it into perspective, sales of American whiskey grew 9 per cent in 2016, compared with 7 per cent for gin and a decline of 1 per cent for scotch. What is the reasoning behind this oddly surreptitious rise in popularity? Officially, many would say that it has to do with a new generation of drinkers who have been watching heavily Americanised television. However, I think the reason is altogether more subtle. I spoke at an event held by the British Bourbon Society recently and what I enjoyed most about the evening was the lack of pretention about the spirit. The society itself is very inclusive and bottles are bought to be drank, rather than being bought to appreciate in value. It’s unsurprising then that compared to scotch, bourbon does not suffer in the slightest from a perception problem. While scotch drinkers in popular culture are mostly portrayed as smoking chair bound bourgeoisie, American whiskey has always been the drink of rock stars and cowboys. Bringing the subject on to home turf, here in Brighton we have bars that specialise in gin, tequila, rum and most importantly The Great Eastern that offers over 130 American whiskeys, but no Scotch equivalent. I think at the end of the day bourbon is a drink better enjoyed with company. I realise I may have got swept up with all this bourbon talk so to conclude, Scotch is still amazing and on a quiet cold evening a hot toddy is the apex of the artform but maybe for Christmas this year try it with bourbon, see how it feels.

THE

Breeze Hove

S

o last week I sang the praises of an old favourite Donatello. This week I am doing something similar for another restaurant that offers good food in nice surroundings for sensible money. I love modern cooking, I love the inspiration of our top, cutting edge chefs, their adventures in food… but there are moments, quite often, when what I want is a satisfying meal that comes as three courses and is both comforting and filling. Breeze Hove does just that, and in saying this I am not doing down the dishes they offer, far from it. This is good cooking but of a style that will never get them on Great British Menu or the like, but will win and warm the hearts of customers with its honesty and value – and hats off to that. It was a cold evening and I was particularly hungry, having skipped lunch. I was joined by Mr S who has a hearty appetite even if lunch has been partaken of. He started with a classic of deep fried Camembert with cranberry, it looked great, a crisp crust and oozing soft centre and a deep red fruit sauce. I chose avocado and prawns and was impressed that this was not the usual halved fruit filled with tiny prawns in pink bottled sauce. Far from it, the avocado, perfectly rip, was sliced and layered with large butterflied prawns cooked in a spicy garlic butter and topped with dressed mixed leaves. It was better that good. Mr S continued with a butternut squash falafel burger, yes, he’s gone over to the dark side and resurrected his vegetarianism. I will at this point say that I wholly support his choice and also applaud Breeze Hove for offering a hug range of vegetarian choices; five main course choice no less and five starters too. He enjoyed it too and in particular the beetroot “hummus” which added moisture as well as a favourite flavour. I of course chose meat and on this occasion the lamb rump. I have eaten this chef’s food many times and know that he applies his solid knowledge of Asian flavours and spicing to some of his dishes. This was a fine example of that skill – perfectly cooked and generous lamb with a spicy crust and the aubergine purée was the best I have ever had, yes the best. It was a robust and satisfying delight. We should have been too full for puds but could not resist a creamy lemon tart and a very good, and again generous, creme brûlée. The wine list is well designed and not over priced too. Breeze Hove is a breath of fresh air, haha, and the large rooms are stylish without being intimidating. An upstairs room with its own bar is an ideal party venue too, a lot larger than many venues can offer.

International box office hit War Horse is hot to trot at the Brighton Centre

I

t’s a theatre phenomenon, a breathtaking spectacle that combines the very best of acting skills, movement and cutting edge puppetry, a visual treat and a show that is both entertaining and deeply moving. War Horse is a box office hit and it’s coming to Brighton. War Horse, which has been seen by over seven million people worldwide, completed its recordbreaking eight year London run at the New London Theatre on 12 March 2016. It has won 25 awards including the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. War Horse has been seen in 97 cities in 10 countries, including productions on Broadway. Latest saw the show in London before it embarked on this major UK tour and the experience far exceeded expectation. Words cannot fully convey this theatrical experience, seeing is definitely believing and like all great theatre the suspension of belief is the key to the success. Michael Morpurgo’s best

selling book hardly seems the ideal project to bring to the stage. After all, the key characters are horses, and clever as horses may be, they cannot act. Enter Handspring Puppet Company, commissioned to create the equine characters that become the centre of this magical production.

“ An unmissable experience that will thrill ”

The puppets are fully lifesize and each horse is operated by a team of actors, responsible for the movement and characterisation of each horse.

We met some of the cast and talked to them about what it is like to work with these immense and complex puppets and it soon becomes clear that being a part of a War Horse puppet is allconsuming, each nuanced move considered, from standing to galloping – and it’s is equally physically demanding, each actor having a share in carrying the huge weights involved. But at the end of the day this is theatre and it has to work as a dramatic entertainment. It does. It is only a few minutes in before you start to dismiss the presence of the puppeteers and really believe in the horses. And those horses are genuinely at the centre of the story with the human characters there to progress the narrative. There’s sadness, it’s not an easy story in many ways, but it is full of hope and joy and there’s humour too as this epic equine saga unfolds. It works on many levels and will appeal to the very young as well as an older audience. It gives insight into conditions in WWI both at home in the UK and in France. It shows the desperate conditions of war from both sides and the bonds built by humans with humans and humans with animals. It will warm your heart, it will make you cry, and it will make you think. This is theatrical entertainment at its very best, an unmissable experience that will thrill the experienced and undoubtedly create a new generation of theatre lovers. REVIEW Bent Double

T

he only cure for a rainy Sunday night is the warm, boystrous atmosphere of Bent Double. A loyal, cheerful audience were welcomed by MC Zoe Lyons on top form, showing off her vest and bringing a refreshing indifference to Christmas. Opening act was energetic Suzi Ruffell who not only had us belly laughing, but handled a group of hecklers with aplomb. No flies on her. Newcomer Russell Arathoon was next up; a strong start, but nervous energy meant his comedy rhythm became slightly out. Headliner Eleanor Tiernan was a charmingly offkilter feminist whose unpredictable right turns had us hooked. Superb fun, highly recommended. Komedia, 3 December 2017

o, not the sweet selection, the real thing and a celebration in two ways. A little off a week ago I was despatched with a colleague and friend to the dark North, Manchester to be precise. I was there to represent the boss, Bill Smith. Latest Bill is well known, he’s been at the front of Brighton media for more years than I care to recall right now and has been my boss, in a very unbossy way, for 25 years now. We get on well most of the time, we fight and argue of course, but what creative people do not fight and argue. Show me a passive creative and I’ll show you a dullard!

“ We don’t do diversity, we are diversity!” Anyway, enough of that, and back to the story. We were in Manchester for the National Diversity Awards, a rather glamorous event staged at the very glamorous Midland Hotel, a place of legend in the North West where I grew up. It was black tie, drinks reception, dinner, you know the kind of thing… and Bill was unable to go, which was a shame as he was nominated in one of the prestigious categories as a champion of diversity. Hence my attendance to, should I need to, accept an award on his behalf. There were lots of people there and some truly moving and

inspirational speakers and acceptance speeches, one or two of which brought tears to my eyes. It was an event full of heart and hope and I was in the company of real people who work tirelessly to make a difference, a difference in so many ways. When it came to Latest Bill’s category we were thrilled, following the announcements of the five finalists as Bill’s name was read out as being highly commended. Now in a field of over a thousand nominees across all the categories this was exciting stuff. Off course I had spoken to Bill in advance about what I might say should he win. He was very clear: “We don’t do diversity, we are diversity!”. In the event I didn’t need to make a speech. I had planned to say that he could not attend because he does not own a suit, but for those of us who really know Bill, he does own a suit and that suit is a real passion for diversity, for inclusion and for giving voice to people of all ages, creeds, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference… the list is too long for inclusion here. You will be seeing a lot of this logo in the coming months because we are very proud of this award, an award that Bill says is not for him but for every one who works to make Latest the company that it is.
