Goodbye 2017, hello 2018
Thoughts on the nature of spirituality
I
W
t’s been a funny old year. Looking back at everything that’s happened on a global scale it kind of feels like someone’s taken a history book and turned it into a series of simplified comic strips for the Sunday Funnies. Or a pantomime. Yes, with social media shouting out “he’s behind you!” every time a new Donald Trump meme makes its way onto the circuit. As with all classic pantomimes though, there were goodies as well as baddies (nice one Meryl Streep on YouTube!), songs to sing along with together loudly and without embarrassment (Ed Sheeran, Rag’n’Bone Man, Ariana Grande etc making their mark on the landscape), farce to laugh at (Brexit logistics anyone?), and hope for success over adversity. I do like hope. Which leads me to 2018. This year it feels like New Year’s resolutions could be more than simply a vague inclination towards self improvement. Personally, the shape of my family is changing. Matriarchs are doing their own thing, sisters are doing it for themselves, and brothers in arms have their own babes in arms to contend with. It feels like time to stop relying on the family grapevine and instead to step up and cultivate my own relationships with these adventurous relations. In a similar vein, perhaps it’s time I stopped relying on my usual news sources and dug a little deeper and independently for the lowdown on what’s really happening in the world. After the Brexit vote a very surprised friend in Vienna messaged me to ask how this had happened. It’s time I took my cue from him and reestablished contacts in Kansas, friendships in Canada, and liaisons in New York to get the skinny from the grass roots. So let 2018 be a year of hope. And perhaps the odd Happily Ever After.

hy is it that even though humans have developed such impressive emotional intelligence we continually disregard the emotions of others and fail to connect with emotions of those we do not know? I would argue it is because our spirituality is severely broken. When I say spirituality I do not refer to organised religion or belief in any God. No, I am referring to the holistic understanding of spirituality as the interconnectedness of all things. I realise that may be a lot to take in, so let me backtrack a little. When the agricultural revolution began approximately 10,000 years ago we left our natural environment. The history books may state that this is the point at which humanity moved into the beginnings of city living, but it was also the point at which we moved into our minds. Before this, when we still lived in nature our basic spiritual needs were addressed by our connection to mother earth, nature, and the greater spiritual universal reality. However, moving into cities brutally severed this connection. But humanity was still left with the same spiritual and mental needs! Therefore, as seen by the age of enlightenment and humanity’s obsessive selfaggrandizement, we combatted this vacancy by filling it with human rationality and logic. But evidence and explanation pale in the face of the grand cosmic questions ‘why am I here?’ and ‘what is the meaning of life?’. We are still as distraught and discontent as ever, only now we’re confused on top of everything else because we cant seem to understand why we aren’t happy. When we learn to reconnect with our inner spirituality we will be able to emotionally connect with our external reality. When we learn to reconnect with our inner spirituality the world around us will change drastically resultantly. We will no longer be apathetic to our fellow human because we will recognise that we are all one in the same, the same energy divided into separate human forms.

PHIL JERROD A favourite headliner on the Brighton comedy scene, possibly the underground hardest working comedian, and beardwearer in the ‘dark years’, Phil Jerrod takes a break from podcasting and supporting Romesh Ranganathan to speak with Victoria Nangle Hello Phil. You've got a really good delivery, quite similar to Nick Helm in that you compel people to look at you. Thank you. Is that something that you've worked on? Thank you very much. I've gone through stages. So when I first started I had a couple of very specific ideas about what to do. One was that the absolute worst thing that could happen was if people thought it was just 'fine'. I either wanted it to be amazing or properly awful. I wanted that. And also there's lots and lots of middle class white men, and there's a part of you that has just got to be bigger and huger and a larger presence than everybody else – otherwise you're just going to be like everybody else.
So you don't scream into people's faces but you've kept that compulsion, the audience feels that direction…
Yeah, he got an award for the hardest working comedian that year, and I'd been on all the same gigs as him. That's fair (giggles). Have you got any beard grooming tips?
“ I wanted it to be like Freddie
Mercury. I wanted it to be a show ”
where actually it's not appropriate in some way. Who were you supporting? Well I've supported a few, but for a year it was Rom (Romesh Ranganathan).
No! I hate beards now. I hate them, I hate people who have them. The whole beard phenomena is utterly unacceptable. I absolutely despise it.
Does that mean you're the only one allowed to have a beard? It's not that I'm the only one allowed to have a beard, but I grew a beard in 2001. And it was exceedingly unpopular for a long time, and I put up with pedophile jokes and sex offence stuff and 'tramp' jokes – I put up with all of that stuff and I lived through those dark days of having a beard, right? And then, five years ago it becomes cool and sexy and everybody has a beard. So you're saying that beards are like band tshirts? Yeah – you've got to have been there! You've got to have been there through the dark days. Say Fleetwood Mac, right? Fleetwood Mac are now really cool. Everyone's like; "Fleetwood Mac's really cool". And in the 70s Fleetwood Mac were cool. But there was this period, in the 90s, when Fleetwood Mac were the most uncool thing you could like – it was a joke if you liked Fleetwood Mac. You would get people who would be burning your house down because you were so uncool to like Fleetwood Mac. If you were a Fleetwood Mac fan during those days and you doggedly stuck to Fleetwood Mac you'd feel really slighted now when someone went; "Have you ever heard of Fleetwood Mac?" Yes I have! And it's a bit like that with a beard. So... any grooming tips? I don't groom it, I dye it – because it was going white. You can't have a bright white beard at 37. That is unacceptable. My beardgrowing tips for all men is – 'shave off your beads, you fairweather beard bastards'. Phil Jerrod headlines The Night Before NYE, Latest Music Bar, Saturday 30 Dec 2017, £5. How would you describe your comedy to someone who hadn't seen you? Christ knows! So I started that way, and I started being sort of huge. And then after a while it becomes a schtick being huge and shouting and all the rest of it, and you want some nuance to come into it. It becomes slower and a little bit more conversational. Because that sort of big rangy sort of character – for a start I used to get criticised for it being a character and that used to annoy me, because it's not a character it's an extension of me. But it needs to have more facets to it. I've tried to make it a more nuanced sort of thing on stage. So it's not the same. I used to literally walk into the audience and literally scream into people's faces. I don't do that quite as much anymore. Sorry what did you ask me?
I want them to, yeah. Oh that's right, yeah – I wanted it to be like Freddie Mercury. I wanted it to be a show, a razzmatazz, like a big great thing. And then I had to do things like tour support and MCing and various other things

ast night I called a cab to take me to the theatre, it was a cold night and I was feeling fragile and vulnerable. Not that I need to feel that way to use a cab, I should have shares in City Cabs by now. Anyway I rode up front with the driver as usual and after a few minutes the driver said that he recognised me from the telly. He said that he really enjoyed my shows on Latest TV, which is always nice to hear. He then asked me if I lived where he had picked me up. When I said yes he was surprised – “I thought you would live in a big house in Withdean!”. How I laughed.
“ A photographer talking about
coming out as gay in the Jehovah’s Witness community ”
Growing recognition is one of the nice things about making AK Soufflé but it is as nothing compared to the opportunities I have had to talk to some of the most inspiring people I have ever met. We had an amazing young actor who reduced me to tears with his stunning performance in A Chorus Line, a photographer talking about coming out as gay in the Jehovah’s Witness community, a human rights lawyer, and a gay and black football fan, amongst so many others. Too many to list here as at this point in time there are 48 episodes to watch. And this is in addition to 68 episodes of Queer Say, in which I am joined by a regular team of presenters as we look at global LGBT+ issues as presented by the world’s media. A big thank you to Ivor Caplin, Geoffrey Bowden, James Ledward, Rev Michael Hydes, Billie Lewis, Kathy Caton and Adam Betteridge for their support in making this the show that it is. A big thank you too to the production team at Latest TV, one and all, and the support I get from the entire Latest Media staff, I know I can be a bit of a diva, but that, my mum says, is what make me “me”! Over the next few weeks you will no doubt eat and drink to your heart’s content, have fun, celebrate and of course remember departed loved ones. But when you have taken your fill then take a look online and catch up on the Soufflés and Queer Says of 2017 and please, if you know someone who I should have on the show, let me know. The programmes are there for us all to share and you can find them at thelatest.co.uk. We aim to celebrate the very best and expose the very worst of our LGBT+ world. Seasons greetings, whatever you believe in. Andrew xxx

STAGE
Strangers On A Train steams into the Theatre Royal Brighton from Highsmith via Hitchcock
T
here has been a trend in British theatre for some years of taking classic films and fiction to the live stage – and for the most part it has been a huge success. There is little doubt that offering the public a chance to enjoy works that they might already know has proved to be a great draw and anything that brings a new audience to live theatre has to be applauded. Now a major new production of Strangers On A Train is set to steam into theatres across the UK next year. The masterful and gripping thriller is based on the psychological drama by the celebrated writer Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr Ripley, Carol), and was immortalised in Alfred Hitchcock’s Academy Award winning film. Opening at the Theatre Royal Brighton on 5 January 2018, Strangers On A Train is presented by Ambassador

Theatre Group and Smith and Brant Theatricals, and directed by Anthony Banks – the team behind the critically acclaimed and phenomenally successful tour of Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight.
“ A masterful and gripping thriller ”
There is also little denying that the inclusion of popular TV actors in casting new productions will also increase the potential audience reach of a play, and in this case they have pulled in a great list of television names who will surely be giving their all to prove that TV actors are of the same calibre as those who have dedicated their careers to stage work. The cast is led by John Middleton (Detective Arthur Gerard) who left Emmerdale earlier this year in a deeply
moving storyline, having played the village’s beloved Vicar Ashley Thomas for over 20 years. Christopher Harper – currently appearing on the nation’s screens as Coronation Street’s Nathan Curtis in the show’s explosive grooming storyline – plays the charismatic and manipulative Charles Bruno, a psychopathic playboy who has a chance encounter with a troubled stranger, Guy Haines (played by Jack Ashton, Call The Midwife). Hannah Tointon, starring as Guy’s fiancé Anne Faulkner, is famed for her roles in Mr Selfridge (alongside her sister, Kara), The Inbetweeners and Hollyoaks. They all come together as a fateful encounter takes place between two men in the dining carriage of a train crossing America. Guy Haines is the successful businessman with a nagging doubt about the fidelity of his wife. Charles Bruno is a cold, calculating chancer with a dark secret. A daring and dangerous plan develops from this casual conversation, setting in motion a chain of events that will change the two men’s lives forever. Strangers On A Train was written by Craig Warner and based on the world renowned 1950 novel by Patricia Highsmith, latterly made universally famous by the classic Alfred Hitchcock film. In the great tradition of Hitchcock, this spinechilling tale will delight audiences with its marriage of dark wit and edgeoftheseat tension. www.atgtickets.com/brighton* 0844 871 7650* *Booking fees apply. REVIEW Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs
E
nthusiasm, fun, and talent were the name of the game at Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. It’s a fine balance between music hall and theatre, kids and adult theatre, whilst incorporating a community feel of dance school chorus children and a generous scattering of local geographical gags. Pop singer and audience favourite Chesney Hawkes impressively held his own vocally alongside the West End stars’ delightfully strong Niki Evans and Cassie Compton (a marvellous wicked queen, revelling in her own badness), and a true delight every time he took to the stage was Richard DavidCaine as the queen’s henchman – gleefully ad libbing and gurning for the audience. Other notable mentions go to Simon Howe as Dolly the Dame, a quality stalwart with a surprisingly good tap dance, and Joseph Elliott as Snow’s simple best friend and comic relief. It was a festive joy to join the comradery, to witness old classic sketches performed with a freshness to seem new to young eyes, and simply bask in the fun of it all.
