Shuffling home into place

Word up

T

I

here’s been a movement of ‘things’ in my home of late. It started with the tidying of my study/spare room before Christmas, ready for my Mum to come to stay – and continues up to yesterday when I was going through a stack of old photographs dating from childhood to ten years ago when I got my first cameraphone. I’m finding it very invigorating having such change charged in my home. I’ll move a box from a shelf to under a desk, and replace it with books that were under the bed. There’s a pile of things to go to the charity shop no longer needed by this home and possibly useful in another’s. My flat has become one giant version of one of those tile games you used to get in your Christmas stocking, with an image to be assembled and one spot missing so that you can move the separate parts into their right place. And I’m really enjoying it. It’s always worth having another look at your treasures with fresh eyes. It’s been interesting working out what I want to shed from my life, and what I am simply happier putting away out of sight. I do love my blanket boxes, and they’re brilliant for those outofsight beauties. Like my GCSE certificates. Yes, I do still need them. No, I don’t know why. In actively deciding what I want in each room of my home, what is on display, and finding ‘home’ places for those things which are not for viewing, I feel like I’m moving even further into the corners of my sanctuary. There are more places where things live and less dumping grounds, it’s becoming more like the ‘homes’ I loved as a child belonging to my parents and my grandparents. The old photographs I found are today in an old photograph album. Next to another old photo album. On a bottom shelf. In its very own place.

t was Wittgenstein that said: “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world”. By this he referred to the idea that the fact that our world is exceedingly verbal, our perception of the world around is shaped and altered by the language we use. It is to this end that I propose the importance of conscious language. By consciously being aware of the language we use we can more accurately describe the world around us and more specifically address the actual reality at hand. One fascinating example of this I’ve recently starting implementing in my own life is my verbal attitude towards food. Since going vegan I’ve discovered the vast world of nutrition lying just below the simple surface of taste and satisfying appetite. In this modern world of processed foods and unnecessary artificial additions the majority of the food on offer contains such little actual nutritional value that to call it food is in fact inaccurate. Continuing to call it food allows this ‘food imposter’ to remain stealing the place of actual food without us noticing; by assuming this name it slips passed undetected, because we do not call it what it actually is. Now, when faced with food that may be delicious in my mouth but will provide my body with nothing so enjoyable, I try to correctly verbally label it in my mind – not food, but pleasure. I am not consuming this for nutrition and energy as I would with actual food, I am only eating for temporary thoughtless enjoyment, so call it what it is. This helps me resist temptation in moments of weakness, but also reminds me of the illusion we all slip into when we fail to question everything. Continuing to give the name of something fresh, natural, nutritional and healthy to something artificially mass produced and conveniently accessible is proof of the power of language. We feed ourselves poison because it is labelled dinner. Be conscious with your language and suddenly you will gain a new mastery of reality. Reassess the reality around you by questioning the very words that come out of your mouth.

STAGE

Noggin the Nog Rides again at the Connaught

F

or a whole generation the name Noggin The Nog will conjure up early evening joy. Noggin was the creation of Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, a pair of brilliant young animators who went on to create some of the most iconic children’s entertainment of the last 60 years – Basil Brush, Bagpuss, The Pingwings, Olly Beak and Fred Barker, The Clangers… yes the word ‘genius’ surely comes into play. Now Noggin The Nog comes to the stage as a delightfully different show for families and fans. Noggin the Nog has been adapted by Third Party Productions, and has been directed by John Wright from Postgate & Firmin’s stories and the original TV films. The show was a five star hit at Edinburgh and Brighton Festivals in 2015. A company of rather English Vikings tell the story in live action, with puppetry, live music and projection of clips from the original films. Accompanied by the brave and mighty Thor Nogson and the great green bird Graculus, the audience

travel north on a journey of adventure and discovery, to battle against the fearsome ice dragon and the dastardly deeds of Noggin’s wicked uncle, Nogbad the Bad.

“ Noggin is a

family show with a strong cross generational appeal ”

The Saga of Noggin the Nog was first produced by Smallfilms for the BBC in 1959, originally in black & white, although later refilmed in colour in 1982. The inspiration for the first Saga of Noggin the Nog (BBC, 1959) came from a set of Norse chess figures from the Isle of Lewis which Peter Firmin had seen in the British Museum in the early 1950s. One story tells that they were rooted from the sand in Uig Bay by a dimwitted farmer who mistook them for elves and promptly fled. Peter

decided they were Nogs. The association between Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin began in 1958 with Alexander the Mouse, which they produced for Rediffusion’s magnetic animation system. This went out live and was as hazardous as it sounds with figures dropping off, turning round and whizzing across the screen. Noggin the Nog was made in single frame animation by Smallfilms – set up in a barn at Peter and Joan’s farmhouse in Kent, their classic films are still loved by viewers of all ages. With simple techniques and delightful storytelling, (children’s entertainment once moved at a less frenetic pace) Noggin is a family show with a strong cross generational appeal. It has such a retro appeal that the company have staged special performances solely to adult audiences. Peter Firmin talks with childlike enthusiasm about the Noggin stage show: "When we saw it, we were delighted because it's a bit silly." He often uses the word ‘silly’ in an entirely positive context. "I think the show appeals to all ages really, to people who remember the series and children who've never seen it.” He recalls with a smile, when they first saw the play performed in Ramsgate, the audience was largely made up of "hairy old men”. Noggin The Nog is produced by Third Party Productions & Mischievous Theatre supported by The Arts Council of England and in association with The New Diorama theatre Regents Park and Theatre Royal Margate. REVIEW Bent Double

B

ent Double is a delight of comedy, bringing a break from homogenised comedic experiences and stories with new voices and ideas. Opening was Debra Jane Appleby, a Yorkshirewoman in her 50s with a confident experienced delivery that was enjoyable when she spoke about her family and moving South, but stepped up a notch further with its energy when she moved on to her recent palpable joy and happiness with her new lady love. The middle section enjoyed two shorter sets from Austrian Alice Frick – fun but nervous, giving the impression of indecision between a comic character or a standup voice of her own – and Sophie Dukar, whose laconic delivery and careful build and release of tension in the room marked her as one to watch out for in the future. Headlining was the very talented Rob Deering, who once again impressed with both his comic timing and musicality, utilising loop pedals, audience suggestions, a wealth of standup experience and an ongoing creation of new material to make him a worthy crescendo to this great night.
