New romantic
‘Home’ is where the growing happens
W
O
hat is romance? There’s a stumper. I hadn’t realised but Valentine’s is only three weeks away. Not that I’m making lots of big plans, but it I did think it was an interesting thing to consider before all the pink hearts erupted over the shop windows. I think romance is the little things between those acourting (or cohabiting, romance isn’t just for the freshly blooming lovers). It’s picking up a matchbook on your first date and using those matches to light a future candlelit dinner. Turning up for a walk on the beach together with enough snacks and drinks for two. And an extra jumper, just in case the wind picks up. Romance is listening and remembering. It’s bespoke and tailored, and it’s reciprocal too! Anyone who would like to be romanced should perhaps remember to prepare some romancing of their own. We’re not in an 80s movie prom scene here, anyone and everyone deserves their own corsage, and going Dutch shares the opportunity to treat each other. An ex flatmate of mine used to receive a dozen red roses every week from her thenboyfriend. It was a bit of Disneystyle magic to start off with, but the routine of it soon gathered a tarnish to a lovely initial thought. She shared that, actually, she preferred the daisies picked up en route to our home when the two of them were walking home, to the flashy ruby red petals that arrived like clockwork every Tuesday. They’d just lost their romance. So, as Valentine’s peeks over the horizon of our diaries, I’d like to encourage everyone to enjoy a little spontaneity and remember the anonymous cards that sparked thrills in the schoolyard. It’s that personal touch, that happy surprise, that can romance us all.

n 18th November 1996 I was came into this world, and the next day I was welcomed into the first home I would ever know. As a blissfully unaware 11oz baby I could never have known that I would go on to spend the next 21 years of my life in that house, beginning my lessons about life and reality and emotion and what it means to be human. A house is a funny thing as a child. A new mind can only comprehend so much as it expands and grows. Therefore deep in all our memories can be found a time when our childhood homes were our entire worlds, the memories framed from an angle close to the floor as we looked up at the towering ceilings and mysterious glowing screens, and the sweetie cupboard purposefully tucked a thousand miles away at the top of the cabinet. These halcyon days are the remnants of a time when our awareness did not stretch past the four walls of our home, had no need to concern itself with the outside world that stayed firmly outside and was a strictly adult concern. But as the seasons change so too do we change with them. And as time passes we grow further away from the floor and up to eye level, and even beyond, with those who were once insurmountable giants. And suddenly one day, in some private pennydrop moment, it truly sinks in that somehow you too are an adult, and for better or worse the concerns of the adult world are now all very much concerns of yours. That realisation changes the shape of your world. Where before the rooms of your house were familiar and cosy now too there seems to lurk a sense of stagnation. The safety and comfort of parental support is as welcome and appreciated as ever, but now it seems to linger on the edge of a desire to feel a little more of the reality of the world with a little less protection. Eventually we must all take those vital solo steps into a world of independence in order to continue learning new lessons. Last week that’s exactly what I did, and I can’t wait to see what lessons and experiences are waiting for me out in the big wide worlds.

ED BYRNE Ed Byrne has been an acclaimed standup (with audiences and critics alike) for 20 years now. He speaks about parenting, the culture of entitlement and the EU with Brian Donaldson ahead of the arrival of his latest show Spoiler Alert’s arrival at Theatre Royal.
A
s he prepares to launch himself upon the nation with another touring show, the Irish comic is firmly of a belief that the current breed of parents spoil their kids rotten whether it’s to do with the everincreasing size of garden trampolines, or his own kids’ demand for elderflower cordial. “My dad wasn’t a bad dad, he was just a 1970s dad. I could never see my children ever again from this moment on, and I’ve already done more parenting then he did in my entire life. But, of course, I
from. But you don’t, really, it’s more that you look around you to see what’s going on with other parents.” For the show Ed extends his analysis on the culture of entitlement to look at areas where we could perhaps do with being spoiled a little bit more. “Where I think we’re not acting spoiled enough is in the political arena. We have a tendency to accept what’s happening and that’s where we should be acting more entitled: we are literally entitled to the government we
“ I made a conscious decision that I was going to be an awesome dad ” made a conscious decision that I was going to be an awesome dad. My wife will come back with tales from her friends of how awful their husbands are and she’ll see me smiling and say ‘alright, stop congratulating yourself just because such and such can’t be left alone with their children for two minutes’.” In his new touring show, the perfectlytitled Spoiler Alert, Ed compares and contrasts the oldschool childrearing days with 21st century methods and suggests that there are different ways to learn how to be a mum or dad. “I grew up in what I would call an aspirational household in that my parents bettered themselves over the course of my childhood. My mother was a radiographer and ended up a lecturer in radiography, while my dad was a sheet metal worker and went up to a supervisory role. I’d still say that you are expected to do a lot more parenting than our parents did and that’s a weird thing because you tend to think that your parents are where you learned parenting
want. We’re spoiled in all these little ways, but not spoiled enough.” As well as stories about his two young sons, Ed weaves in routines about running out of petrol in the most awkward place imaginable, helping rescue an injured man in the Cairngorms, and the nation dividing campaign and result of the EU referendum. His way of tackling Brexit is to draw an analogy with the time his son was determined to touch an electric fence with his dad trying to warn him of the dangers. “I was telling the story of the electric fence for a while, and then suddenly it struck me that it was Brexit in microcosm. I don’t want to alienate half of the population or maybe a third of my audience, but it works as an analogy whichever side you’re on. The government told you not to do this and that it would be a terrible idea, but you said ‘no, we want to do it anyway’. So now we’re doing it and it’s proving a terrible idea. I do think it’s a fair analogy, but no doubt for some it will
come across as me being a typical liberal elite Remoaner.” Spoiler Alert also continues a theme that he’s tackled in previous shows, that of his gradual shift from being a workingclass Dubliner to a fully paidup ruralresiding member of the middle classes. Where once he would do routines slating 4x4 owners, he is now the proud(ish) owner of such a vehicle. And in the poster for his tour, he brandishes other signifiers of
social mobility: a bow tie and chainsaw. “It’s one of two I own: that one is the smaller of the two,” Ed remarks of his chainsaw rather than his neckwear. “I use it for firewood, both for my wood burning stove and also for the barbecue. The first time I used one I was fine, though I think it worried my parents that I had bought a chainsaw.” Ed Byrne – Spoiler Alert, Theatre Royal Brighton, Thursday 15 February 2018, 8pm, £28.15

ANDREW KAY Dines Out Market
T
his little piggy went to Market, and having done so was reminded just how good it is. I am of course referring to Market the restaurant in Hove. It was an evilly cold December evening and Mr L and I were off to a choir concert at St Andrew’s Church, knowing that it would be too late to dine post event. Market seemed like a good idea and as we wanted to eat at 6pm they were able to squeeze us in. Small plates are such a good idea when you are dining early and on a tight schedule, and our only complaint would be with ourselves – for not allowing ourselves enough time to really enjoy what turned out to be a very fine meal indeed.
A large tranche of fish was our next choice, basically because it came with brown shrimps, my favourite of all shellfish, and I was very pleased to see them not scattered in a parsimonious way but lavished across the dish with abandon. I was transported with delight and used the remains of the excellent bread to mop up the sweet and salty juices. Mopping up sauce is the right of any serious diner, sorry mum, I know you disapprove! Next a beef cheek with truffled celeriac mash, beets and crispy onions. Now, earlier on I used the ubiquitous phrase ‘small plate’. Well let me say now that this dish in almost any restaurant could have carried a price tag of at least £18 as, I should say, would our
“ I used the phrase ‘small plate’. Well let me say now that this dish in almost any restaurant could have carried a price tag of at least £18 ” We started with some padron peppers, a classic tapa, and one I can never resist. These days the Russian roulette element of the rogue hot one seems to have disappeared but it does not detract from the delight. The delicious bread came with a brace of flavoured butters too, that we both enjoyed. Fortunately the owners were on hand to guide us through the dishes on the menu and point us in the direction of some real treats. Croquettes were an obvious choice and we loved them, cheesy balls of pleasure with a chorizo infused aioli. Next a little treat of truffled celeriac soup with a savoury crumb and blade of red chicory, perfect heartwarming fare for a cold night. But it was the extraordinary squash dish with Lord of the Hundreds cheese and hazelnuts that took our breath away. A majestic dish, bejewelled and packed with flavour bursts that put huge smiles on our faces, it was a savoury delight that would have stood its ground as a dessert, positively one of the best dishes of 2017!
fish choice. At Market it was a remarkable £10.50 – yes only that, and it was certainly a portion to satisfy the hearty appetites of two gourmands. It was perfection, yielding to the lightest touch of a knife, sticky with a well reduced sauce but at the same time not overly seasoned, a fault with far too many heavy meat reductions. The mash was a good foil as were the beets that added a sharp element to the flavour profile and the crispy onions – well what’s not to love about crispy onions. We drank a carafe of great red, Ms A’s recommendation and had to pay and depart in haste – the only fault, and ours – in a very good meal. We walked to the concert filled with regret that we had not made Market the focus of our evening and vowing to return very soon to try even more of the chef’s delicious dishes.

REVIEW Opera Up Close: The Magic Flute
T
here were a few moments during the first half of Opera Up Close’s production of The Magic Flute that were slightly discomfiting. Would a quiet, distorted and often palmmuted electric guitar do Mozart’s melodies justice? Would the modern setting and new libretto distract or illuminate the work in a new light? Thankfully, by the second half my nerves were dispelled and I was won over as the charisma and ability of the cast coalesced into an enjoyable, lyrical whole. To set the scene, imagine The Magic Flute transposed into modern times with a nightclub a stylistic and narrative focal point. The singers were accompanied by bass, guitar (switching between electric and modern), flute and piano. Glyn Maxwell’s libretto is English and there were no surtitles: thankfully, the performers’ diction was superb. The singing was occasionally a little quiet but the singers were wellrehearsed and the work carefully honed. The staging was stylish, spartan at times but effective, with some grand lighting reveals and a wellrealised lurid futuristic aesthetic. The impressive production has given us a convivial and melodious Magic Flute brimming with creativity across the board, and one that we’ll hopefully see more of in the future. t 61 I am repeatedly alarmed by the huge holes that there are in my knowledge of the world. I’m a fairly well rounded character in many ways, one of which I know is my size, but my word there are gaps. It was a week ago that I had an email from a person that I hoped might come in to the studio and be my guest on AK Soufflé. And when she agreed I was thrilled, I have been hoping to have her in for some time and quickly agreed a date for her to come in and record. About a half hour later I was suddenly hit by the fact that I needed to do some research.
“ I’m a fairly well rounded character
in many ways, one of which is my size, but my word there are gaps ”
I of course research all of my guests as much as I possibly can, looking at their work and their personal history so that on screen I at least do not look the complete fool. It was only then that I realised that in this case I had little or no idea about my guest’s work and background. She is Rabbi Elizabeth Tikvah Sarah from Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue. Now I am to some extent aware of a little bit of what Judaism is. Or at least I thought was, but I was wrong. I have a bit of

received knowledge, nothing more than hearsay and dare I say it ‘gossip’, a smattering of words and an embarrassing few incidents from my past. I had a girlfriend once, yes a long time ago, called Sharon and she was Jewish. I had to pretend to be Jewish when I met her family, not easy although my dark curls and less then dainty nose stood me in good stead if you will forgive the racial stereotyping. Her parents were very smart and very nice but grandmother was no fool and saw right through me. A few years later I was at dinner with a good friend and her family were also Jewish but lapsed. But a devout uncle was there and it was Friday so I was asked to dine with a tea towel on my head. Hilariously the mother had roasted a chicken but felt we needed chipolatas, which were passed around under the table so he was not offended. I digress. My schooling, Church of England, failed to fill in the real details of any other faith, a disgrace I think and I am now having to discover what it means for my self. I know that schools are far better now at embracing faiths but some of us oldies need to get with it if we are to better understand what is happening in the world.
