hich is more intimidating – someone with a big brain or someone with big muscles? Both have an authority when they walk into a room, an aura that says that they’re not used to being questioned. Does this mean that if you get a Top Dog from each tribe (Brain and Brawn) together they simply square off without a second though, neither acquiescing? And then who comes out on top? Maybe the answer to that comes down to how many of the other people in the room have allegiance behind one or the other tribe, to set the tone of the room. I’m not saying that the superclever or the superstrong are naturally superior to the rest of us, I’ve just noticed an unmistakeable confidence that seems to come from a place so deep you’d swear it was in their bones. Perhaps that ‘swagger’ comes from practising the discipline you need to be a leader in either field. It reminds me of something my mother said to me in an offhand moment when I was a kid and she a mature student at art college. She was remembering meeting my father’s old university pals. “You know, it was his friends who got a 2:1 that I found acted the most clever,” I knew that she meant something akin to ‘superior’ or ‘using long words a lot’. “The ones who got a First were lovely. They were curious, and wanted to ask questions of you.” That’s probably why they got Firsts, I thought. The cleverest people aren’t trying to show you how smart they are, they’re trying to learn even more. There’s a ‘brawn’ version of this too – The Karate Kid’s Mr Miyagi. It’s not about getting the big guns out, it’s about discipline and growth. And curiosity. What’s that? What happens when I do this? And what shall we do next?

n Tuesday 23rd January 2017 one of my heroes died. Ursula Le Guin was a fantasy and science fiction writer who began publishing work from 1959, and continued all the way up until she died. In that long career rather than simply managing to stay relevant she went on to become a legend in her own lifetime, and with good reason. The numerous fantastically vivid and striking worlds that Le Guin constructed became synonymous with her name, and inside these richly textured universes would she weave the most beautifully lyrical stories that could span epic proportions in her elegantly effortless prose. She was a woman of boundless talent, and the world is undeniably better off for the work she has left behind as her legacy. Le Guin was one of the first authors I ever fell in love with, and that love will only continue to grow as I do. I remember curling up as a young kid with A Wizard of Earthsea, a book I’d picked out from a trip to the fantasy section at Waterstones — which was a veritable nirvana for me at that age. I devoured that book. I can still clearly remember how enraptured I was by Le Guin’s refreshingly original take on all the fantasy tropes I was becoming so desensitised to. In her stories the wizards were not old men with wispy white beards, they were hardened islanders with ruddy bronze skin. And Ursula’s imagination was not lazy enough to expect the reader to be content with simple magic words; no, her magic had deep and ancient spiritual rules that bound together the fabric of her universe and remained loyal to an ubiquitous internal logic. I soaked it all up obsessively. It’s books like Ursula’s that represent the true transformative potential of fictional literature. All too often is fiction brushed off as escapism, ultimately irrelevant and a waste of time as it does not pertain to reality. But dare to allow yourself to read the first chapter and instantly you’ll be pulled deeper, into all the layers of subtext that have the unique quality of reflecting the real world from angles we have never seen before. Do yourself a favour and don’t take my word for it, discover her worlds for yourself.

ANDREW KAY Dines Out Around town

S

o while some of you gave up the booze this January and some even dipped a toe into veganism, I simply made up for the lost time I endured over Christmas caused by flu. Yes real flu and not the strangely sexist ‘man flu’ which I recently heard is actually a real thing – who would believe it, you could not make this crazy stuff up. Anyway I have been doing lots of home cooking, staying in and staying warm, which has rather curtailed my dining out. So this week I have a couple of amazing recommendations, one a new find and one an old favourite. Let’s start with the old favourite,

My new find was an introduction from the inimitable Ms JRB, an iconic lady of the city, when she is here and not globetrotting. She took me to The Pond and there I had a breakfast beer, it was 1pm after all so I felt no guilt, and I had a Taiwanese beef brisket and kimchi bun. Well to say I was blown away is seriously underestimating my delight. This was epically tasty, generous and, at a fiver, brilliant value. I was all for having a second one but time was against me. Ms JRB had a prom bun and I would certainly try more next time, in fact I plan to take a group so we can hammer the whole menu. Very soon!

“ On the way I fantasised about boiled eggs and soldiers but when I got there I was seduced by Welsh Rarebit with bacon ” Marmalade. It’s been around a while now and from the word go has been a popular place for breakfast, brunch and lunch – and quite rightly too. I was with a dear friend, Ms M, and we were off to see an early screening of Darkest Hour which we would both highly recommend, proper cinema in every sense. Marmalade was on the way and despite Brighton’s awful parking we persevered and found a space. On the way I fantasised about eggs and soldiers but when I got there I was seduced by Welsh Rarebit with bacon. Now I am very particular about my rarebit, so never think that I will accept cheese on toast, no. It’s a far better dish than that and takes a lot more work and care. This was great, and the bacon was perfect, crisp and tasty with no offensive flobby fat, yes flobby and not flabby! Ms M had a bacon butty and declared that it was the best bacon butty she had ever had, a sentiment that she reinforced later that day by text. The coffee is good too and whilst not greasy spoon prices it is good value for good food.

Finally a late entry, I invariably pop into Red Roaster on the days that I record my TV shows, usually a coffee and a pastry, sometimes one of their epic bacon rolls – but this morning I was ravenous having dined lightly last night. The menu is packed with Matt Gillian’s inventive dishes, some traditional and some his takes on tradition. I’m often offended by people beggaring about with dishes but Matt… well, he simply gets it right. So today it’s shakshuka and very good it is too. I’m writing this as I eat it and for several reasons. One, I am savouring every spiky mouthful. Two, the typing is slowing me down. And three, if I make it last I can call it brunch or lunch even because I cannot imagine that I will need to eat again until this evening. So there you have it, three dainty dishes to set before a queen. I thank you. 006_LS864_Interview_Colin Hoult_Layout 1 25/01/2018 15:37 Page 1

ANNA MANN After several series of ‘Colin Hoult's Carnival of Monsters’ on BBC Radio 4, working with Ricky Gervais, Harry Hill, and Al Murray, and becoming a familiar face on television, Colin Hoult is back as his alter ego diva actress Anna Mann. Anna had a word with Victoria Nangle Hello Anna, and how are you today? I am, as so often happens in this business, completely engorged with cake. I was torn between the Coffee Toffee Doo Dah, the Raspberry Frumptious and the Ugly Zebra Cake. So instead I opted for all three, one atop the other. I'll regret it deeply in a few minutes, but what can I say? I live for the moment. You have to take hold of the moment and really give it what for, otherwise what’s the point? We'll all be dead one day right? Eat the bloody cake. Excuse, I just need to go and be sick a bit. Your show is called 'How We Stop The Fascists'. What do you think you late husband John 'Smellsy' Smells would think of it? If he wasn't already dead I imagine it would kill him all over again. It’s. That. Good.

What prompted you to think that the Fascists have risen to the point of needing you to put them in their place once again? Mostly it was when my yoga teacher, Lesley, barred me for snoring. That's when I knew things were really getting out of control, the Fascist! You have an amazing back catalogue of famous friends and anecdotes, that you have very kindly shared. Which

select group of people to see, namely my husbands and my best pal Sue Clinch (we often check each other out now we're a little older). Exsquaddie come filmmaker Andy Parker (another Hoult character) contributes to your show. With a television pilot based on his family in the works – have you seen it, and if so what do you think of it? I got a sneak preview in his

“ We'll all be dead one day right? Eat the bloody cake ” anecdote about you has been aired that you would have preferred kept under wraps? Probably the photos of what I literally keep under my wraps. Real scandal when that got out. That stuff is for a very

shed. It’s incredibly visceral and brave. I love the working classes and to get the chance to really hear how they talk, walk, make love etc is a godsend. Fingers crossed it gets a commission.

Have you any advice for him as to how he might handle the spotlight of attention? He has a very short fuse and tends to kick off at the least notice. Which I think will really keep him in the papers, so just keep doing that I reckon. I've been dining out on my GBH charge for years. Is the fight against Fascists a team effort? I ask as you have a number of other 'contributors' to the show... Oh god no – and if they kick off and say they wrote it then tell them to sod off. They're liars. I'm extremely tyrannical about my fight against the Fascists. Its my way or the highway. Will we be hearing any more Carnival Of Monsters on BBC Radio 4, or might you have other plans for the wireless set? I'm currently developing a little piece called Anna Mann 'Help Yourself'. It’s all about self help books and will change your lives, all of you. Whereabouts do you, Anna Mann, live in Brighton – and what are the pros and cons you experience in our fair city? I have a very small room atop the Pepper Pot. technically (and actually) squatting but the view of the post office is to die for. I guess the thing I love most about Brighton is the cake, which is – as we've witnessed – sadly also a very big con. Excuse, I must have a little bit more of a clear out. I blame the Raspberry Frumptious. Colin Hoult/Anna Mann – How We Stop The Fascists, Komedia, Thursday 15 February 2018, 8pm, £10/8 Photo credit: Ed Moore

hen Emily Molnar became artistic director of Ballet British Columbia she had a vision for the company – for it to grow, develop, build new work and reach new audiences. It’s taken a few years but gradually that vision is being realised. Emily, a former principal dancer, took over the helm of the Vancouverbased company

“ The UK is a very important platform for dance in the world today ” in 2009 and since then Ballet BC has become one of Canada’s most soughtafter contemporary dance companies. So much so that she feels it is now time to bring the company to British audiences. “Since 2009 we have really been developing the perspective of the company and questioning what we mean by contemporary,” says Emily. “It’s such a loaded word but our question was ‘what

able to come to the UK and share the work and tour is exciting for us,” she adds. “It’s happening for us now, it didn’t happen overnight. The company is more than 30 years old and it’s taken me, and us, nine years but touring like this gives us the impetus to go forward. It also gives us the information that we need to understand what the next level is for us. We needed to build the work, we needed to build our practice, we needed

to build our culture and then eventually go out to various audiences. We’ve been touring for quite a while now but the reach has not been as far, it’s tended to be closer to home. And it’s the natural evolution to expand into the European market and particularly come to the UK.” Emily is ambitious for the company and is hopeful that the dates will open other doors for Ballet BC. “I hope this UK tour will create other opportunities for touring across Europe. We want to continue to develop our audiences around the world. The company will have a future by building audiences around the world.” The programme features a triple bill of works all created by female choreographers. Emily’s own work 16+ a room, Canadian dancer and choreographer Crystal Pite’s Solo Echo and Israeli choreographer Sharon Eyal’s Bill. “The programme offers a variety of voices from the contemporary dance world, we have work by two Canadian choreographers and one international. It’s very important to us that we have a global conversation. Crystal and Sharon are both very prominent voices right now in international dance and we are really pleased to be able to showcase their work to international audiences.” Under her leadership, Ballet BC has a strong commitment to creating new work and the company now has more than 40 new works in its repertoire which have been created by international choreographers. REVIEW True West

D

irector Steven O’Shea did a fine job realising the languid Americana of Sam Shepard’s True West, thanks in no small part to a firecracker performance from Stuart Warwick. The charismatic Warwick excelled in the bristling bravado of roustabout Lee, exuding fiery menace in his laborious, drawling manipulation of his doomed brother. Will Cooper brilliantly captured the fidgety and frustrated Austin in the first act, but the play lost its way some when the frustration boiled over into furious delirium. The slowly building tension gave way to ‘The Young Ones’ levels of anarchy, with all manner of props thrown and flung about, raised voices and heightened melodrama, resulting in an unrewarding and tonally confusing payoff. Regardless of the disjointed tone however, Sam Shepard’s world was well realised (with some great lighting effects utilised for the window and a simmering fire and a comprehensive ’50s style for the mother’s home), and the performance was beguiling and involving. S T UA RT G O L D S M I T H Stuart Goldsmith is a comedy explorer, a stand up comedian, a leading podcaster on the mechanics of comedy with his acclaimed The Comedians’ Comedian, and last year an experimenter with the world’s first crowdsourced set. He speaks with Victoria Nangle Hi Stu, what can we expect to see in 'Like I Mean It'? Bundles of silly, openhearted jokes about David Attenborough, bombdisposal robots and blueberries, and a secret theme about marriage, parenthood and compromise. PLUS a genuinely terrific bit about a French chef torturing a frog emotionally to improve the flavour.

150 people who turned up to see it, but to the material itself. It was incredibly funny and exciting and really stretched me as a performer to think on my feet and perform a sort of live re purposing of some of the ideas, into a joke that would work. And every so often there'd come along a belter of a gag that would make the writer shine and the audience cheer as well as laugh because they recognised the talent in that particular joke, and then I could just bask in all the reflected glory!

You've had some incredible comedians on the ComCom Podcast. How do you think constantly examining your craft (I'm using that word so that you don't have to) has affected your own comedy performance and writing? Thank you! The biggest lesson for me personally is to let go of the analytical lens when I'm being creative and just splurge it all out there, plenty of time to edit and secondguess later in the process! Weirdly, it took me a lot of analysis to realise that... It reads like an encyclopaedia of advice and experience. What are the three best hints or tips or downright instructions you've gathered from your interviews? My favourites include: Gary Delaney says, "talent is piss" (e.g. although talent exists, it's nothing like as important as hard work). Arthur Smith said: "think of the third idea", meaning that the first idea you have is so obvious other people will have thought of it and it won't be surprising; the second is what the clever kids will have thought of already; the third is where the gold is – it's about pushing your creativity to work harder. Sara Pascoe said that if you examine it honestly enough and with enough detail, anything can be funny.

You've hinted that there might be another project in the works off the back of that – any tips of exclusives you could share on this? I can't say anything about it, which might mean everything or nothing. But I'm very excitedly not saying anything about it...

You crowdsourced a show for Edinburgh 2017, in addition to your own fully written and polished show. What was that experience like?

If your beautiful child turned up from the future tomorrow aged 20 and said they wanted to be a comedian what advice would you give them? Haha, he's quite a dish isn't he? I'd be thrilled that there's still a planet in 20 years, and after grilling him on the future of Bitcoin I'd tell him to follow his heart. Always worked for me. Taking a cue from you… are you happy? Very. Part of that is the family, part of it is the love I receive from my listeners, and part of it is having learnt that travelling hopefully is always better than arriving. The stigma of one

I

live alone. I choose to live alone and I enjoy living alone. Solitude is a great luxury and one that for the most part I embrace. Okay, okay, I freely admit that sometimes solitude can dip into loneliness and loneliness is not fun. I haven’t always lived alone, I’ve lived with family, with friends, with lodgers and yes, with lovers. And yes I have enjoyed all of those states – well, for the most part. I mean surely we have all had moments when the person or persons that we have lived with have got on our nerves, driven us mad, mad to the point where we have craved a space of our own.

“ I’m talking frankly here when I say that I now have to recognise that I am getting old ” For years as a single gay man I wanted a partner, I fell for the belief that to be “complete” I needed to be a part of a couple, hands up who has been there? Coupledom is a dominating state that seems to frown on singledom. It can become oppressive – if you let it. In being alone I am sure that I am not alone. We are a nation with an increasingly large older population, we’re all living longer – even us gays! And as we get older we become more vulnerable,

our daily needs become more demanding of our physical capabilities and for those of us who do live alone there is a missing level of support that a partner can offer. I’m talking frankly here when I say that I now have to recognise that I am getting old. I can play the young at heart card of course but the body tells a different story. But it’s not the physical aspects of growing old that should be our concern, well not solely. Physical restrictions that come with old age are, of course, a major concern in our increasingly large older community. It is loneliness that can really damage a person’s quality of life and lead to the complications of mental health issues. So can I live alone and remain happy? Right now I think I can – but not everyone is as bloodyminded and stubborn as me. We all need to embrace the needs of our older gay community, a phone call could be a lifeline, costs very little but could mean the world.
