y mother thinks I’m 18 years old. I mean, she knows in her brain that I haven’t been 18 for quite a while, but she told me the other day that 18 is where she still thinks of me being. At least she realises I can vote. I do this too, with the age thing. My sister is much younger than me and I always think of her as being around ‘a very grown up 16’. She turns 28 this year. And I have friends who are younger than her that I have never confused with precocious teenagers. It’s like the people that we’re close to can only move forward in fits and starts. My grandparents – who died in their 90s a few years ago – are still only in their 60s to me, probably due to a memorable rendition of The Beatles’ ‘When I’m 64’ at my grandad’s birthday party. In fact we sang it several times. Well, perhaps I sang it several times. Likewise my uncle must be 25 years old as I clearly remember him having a birthday cake with all of the numbers of the clock marked with candles in their appropriate places, twice – and one more for luck in the middle. And I have to concentrate to work out that he passed double that a while ago. It’s like squinting at those magic eye posters to acknowledge a family member has aged at all. It’s interesting that it works in both directions, not just aged aunts swearing that you can’t be taking Alevels already, why it was only yesterday that Lego was your best friend. I know how old my mother is, but my gut will tell me to knock 20 years off that at least. So I won’t let her get older any more than I’ll allow my sister to. In having my family play the background to life, they have become an extraconstant. And I have in theirs. Maybe it’s time we all let each other grow up just a little bit more.

spend a lot of time smiling. I was told once that the physical act of smiling has been proven to be able to actually increase happiness. So I started smiling at myself in mirrors. And then eventually I started smiling at other people – people on the bus, people in the streets, the cashier and the barista and the bus driver. I found that even if the physical act of smiling making you happy wasn’t sound science, there was no disputing that the happiness of others definitely left you warm and content. And the more I smiled at people, the more smiles I got back. I realised I had stumbled upon a kind of magic; from the simple act of smiling I could turn faceless strangers into warm friends, and in turn it made the world a much friendlier place. Sometimes I’ll even get a “hello” or “good morning”, and that brief purely friendly connection between two strangers is all the sweeter for the way it touches on a world where all humans are default friends rather than default strangers. Eventually it got me thinking about the gaps between people. We live in a world structured around words. Although in one sense this is brilliant because it means we can communicate with each other in complex and in depth ways, it’s also a bit of a burden because it simultaneously means we’ve forgotten how to communicate with each other in any other way. Did you know that 60% of communication is non verbal? Everything from the clothes you wear to your body language, to the minor movements of your eyes, are ways we communicate with each other, let alone all the cutting edge science that suggests we are also susceptible to the energetic frequencies our brains emit. And our intuition is in fact us perceiving this emotional information from each other. That’s why smiling is so great. It’s the non verbal way to let people know you’re wishing them well, that you hope the best for them, that despite the fact you have no personal ties to them you love them for the very fact of their being, and the humanity that you share. A simple smile is the key to reconnecting humanity. Let’s be friends, not strangers. All we have to do is smile. LATEST 7/HOMES

GEORGE!
Chandni Mistry Interview – George’s Marvellous Medicine
T
he latest theatrical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story George’s Marvellous Medicine first hit the stage at Curve theatre, Leicester, to rapturous responses from audience members and critics alike. Ahead of its visit to Brighton, Chandni Mistry, who plays the role of the Chicken, talks about the production. “I’m so excited to be part of this show! Our production of George’s Marvellous Medicine shows how imagination is the most amazing thing, not just for kids but for adults too. All George wants to do over his school holiday is read a book but the adults keep getting in the way. To get around that, he finds the most ridiculously inventive ways to have fun again. “When I first got the part I really didn’t know what to expect. Obviously I play a
giant chicken but exactly how we’d make that happen on stage was a mystery to me! Our Director, Julia Thomas, has a brilliant eye for creativity and invention that keeps everything a surprise and a little unexpected. I’m certainly not your typical chicken!
“This is a kids’ show but it really is fun for the entire family. Julia Thomas and our designer Morgan Large have packed the production full of references to modern life that
“ This is a kids’ show but it really is fun for the entire family ” “One thing I’ve got to say about this show is how amazing the cast and creative team are. Everyone is giving their all behind the scenes and up on stage, I think that really shows too – you can’t get up in front of audiences as a chicken or a grumpy Joan Collinsesque Grandma and be even a little bit shy. It’s all or nothing!
keep it current and fun for all ages. Tasha TaylorJohnson, our composer, has also infused the show with this incredibly funky, hip hop soundtrack that you can’t help but want to move to. It’s a brilliant vibe. “We do have a strong ‘don’t try this at home’ message in the show but we’re also really inspiring creativity and entrepreneurship in our
audiences. A lot of our props are made from recycled objects and we actually spent hours when rehearsals first began just letting our imaginations run wild and making the props that you see on stage, from pigs to milkshake machines. It was great for us to get in that creative zone and the things we made from the most random objects absolutely work in George’s world. “This is the first time I’ve ever performed in an adaptation of one of Roald Dahl’s stories but I’ve always loved him as a writer. I remember reading his stories when I was younger and finding them so funny, there’s a lot of nostalgia for me in this production. That’s the great things about Dahl – kids are still reading his stories and are coming to the theatre with their parents who also read the books when they were children. They have this universal appeal that brings everyone together which is fantastic to make come to life on stage. “I think my favourite thing about this production (and there are lots to choose from!) is the reaction we get from audiences each performance. Hearing the crowd laugh and enjoy the show is just the best feeling you can have.” George’s Marvellous Medicine is a Curve and Rose Theatre Kingston coproduction. NO SUCH THING AS A FISH The awardwinning podcast No Such Thing As A Fish gets 1.2 million downloads a week, has been transformed into the spinoff topical BBC2 TV series No Such Thing As The News and was named one of iTunes’s top ten most downloaded podcasts of 2016. Andrew Hunter Murray and Anna Ptaszynski – half of the panel – speak with Victoria Nangle Working with QI seems to be a very organic environment, with branches like NSTAAF podcast, books, shows all fostered by curiosity. Is this the case, or am I just romanticising? Andrew: No, that’s pretty much it. We all love working on the different areas and they’re all satisfying in different ways. Our new book, The Book of the Year, is an AZ of the most amazing events in 2017 – but that was a spinoff from our TV show last year, No Such Thing As The News. Every project gives us new idea for the next one. Anna: It helps that we’ve always been given a lot of freedom at QI, and space to branch out from one thing to the next and try out new ideas. A lot of the branches lead nowhere, and the ideas often turn out to be completely stupid, but none of what we’ve done could have
happened if we hadn’t been given that opportunity to experiment. How do you select the topics that you'll be covering in each show? Anna: The choice is factled, not topic led, and we all have our different ways of finding new facts. It might be
been taught specifically to recognise the faces of Jake Gyllenhaal, Barack Obama, Emma Watson, and Fiona Bruce, so I suspect we’ll soon be covering the topics of sheep and facial recognition. Andrew: Yes, it really is as simple as us emailing our favourite facts to each other. James might find out, for
“ This year 2,000 bees were stolen in the town of Beeston ” something we’ve seen in a museum, or heard on the radio, or read in a book or magazine (and yes, okay, we occasionally use the internet too). Then whatever facts come from that process, the topics spring from those facts. For instance, today I discovered that sheep have
example, that this year 2,000 bees were stolen in the town of Beeston. Then we go off and do our own homework, and when we meet up we’ve all got completely different research on the same fact. How does the live recording compare to the regular podcasts in prep and interaction? Andrew: The live shows are much more raucous than the office shows, which is inevitable when you’ve got 500 people laughing along with you in the
room. So they get a bit more crazy. But the interaction between the four of us is pretty much the same wherever we are. Anna: Yep, although with the live shows we probably err on the side of lighter, funnier facts rather than interesting butserious. The sound of an audience’s eyebrows being raised in appreciation is not as encouraging, from a performer’s perspective, as the sound of people laughing. Will you be making more series of No Such Thing As The News? Andrew: We would absolutely love to – it is one of the things we’re proudest of and we think it was a really innovative new version of the oldschool panel show. It was brilliant fun to watch, cheap as chips to make, and dynamite in a late night slot. Tony Hall, you have our phone number. Anna: Does he have it? We should check that he has it. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t been in touch. What are your favourite questions that you've yet to find the answers to? Andrew: Where does our colleague Dan get his facts from? They are all about Yeti, Nessie, and the Mongolian Death Worm, and yet many of them have no sources whatsoever. That, I would say, is the greatest mystery of all. Anna: Will we ever crack time travel? What happens when we die? How do washing machines make socks disappear? Would Friends be a huge let down if they brought it back? The usuals. No Such Thing As A Fish, Brighton Dome, Sunday Thursday 1 March 2018, 8pm, £19/17

ANDREW KAY Dines Out Classy classics
B
righton and Hove’s food scene has never been better, never more exciting and never more acclaimed. But I bet that if I asked any one of the top ranking chefs in town what is at the heart of what they do it would be classic cuisine. As the late great AA Gill once described it, a lot of modern food is “Jabberwocky”, by which he meant fantastic invention. I love the work of our modern chefs, but there are times when what I want is classic, and on a big plate if you follow my drift. So where better to go than the city’s oldest and perhaps most famous restaurant English’s. It’s been around since the late 19th century and has always been focused on fish and seafood and the current owners have been at the helm, for probably longer than any other in the city – around 40 years I believe.
“ I had a hankering for a Dover sole
and settled on Colbert, the one I had never tried ”
So on a very dismal January night Mr L and I braved the cold wind and relentless drizzle and ended up sat at the oyster bar with a dozen very good oysters, Lindisfarne and Mersea Island and a glass of Laurent Perrier, followed by a rather good sparkling Albarino, yes luxury and history all rolled into one delightful experience. But that was only the start of an epic journey of classic delights. Once at our table in what has to be one of the nicest dining rooms in town I headed off on a series of food memories. I started with potted shrimps, long a favourite and recently simply not measuring up – too cold, too much butter and too small. This was generous, not fridge cold and actually rather light with the right amount of cayenne and mace to give it that traditional zing without drowning the sweet little crustaceans. Mr L had Coquille St Jacques, again a classic and again not messed with. His smile
said it all. Manager Nick Emmott, recently voted in the top four UK restaurant managers, also delivered an omelette Arnold Bennett, and next time I will order this delight unprompted. We opted to let the delightful sommelier steer our wine choices and a glass of English Bacchus from Devon was a great choice. The menu is packed with temptation, fruits de mer, a few modern dishes, fish on and off the bone… where does one go. I had a hankering for a Dover sole, but how? Meunière, bon femme? I finally settled on Colbert, because it was the one I had never tried. Oh my, what a dish, the fish skinned and boned then opened up, filled with a little garlic butter, not so much that it swamped the flavour of the fish, then breadcrumbed and fried. It was huge, it was tasty and it was a joy to eat, the fish in prime condition. I believe that a Dover sole needs to be left a day after being caught to achieve its full potential, and this was certainly perfect. Mr L was then persuaded to have the house speciality of lobster thermidor, a princely dish that I seldom choose and for two reasons: it hits my gout hard and my wallet harder. Mr L smiled at being persuaded to go that way and beamed when the dish arrived. I tasted it and I was not surprised, it was truly magnificent. On the side pomme Lyonnaise was superb, gratin dauphinois the same, and the spinach and green beans cooked perfectly – by which I mean cooked and mot merely made hot. We were presented with two Chardonnays, one new world and one old, and yes we worked out which was which and which we preferred. Smug maybe, but it is the job. I was beyond full by this point but easily swayed to try a dessert. I really wanted to go sticky toffee but common sense said panna cotta, lime with rum jelly and apple compote. It was good but not as stellar as our previous courses, a little too firm. And I would have taken that tropical idea a step further and replaced the almonds with shreds of coconut, picky me. English’s is living history, paying attention to fashion but not abandoning its classic roots, and for that I raise my hat. Kit Redstones play Testosterone at The Old Market challenges our perceptions of gender
H
ow do you perceive your own gender? Do you actually know what nonbinary means or cis? The world right now is at a massive crossroads when it comes to gender and particularly in respecting how any individual presents themself and their pronoun of choice. But this is only the tip of the iceberg, confusing for many of us but one that we certainly have to learn about and grasp, and for those
piece is much more than what Redstone wickedly satirises as another story about “brave little trans soldiers” which reminds us that transitioning is a beginning not an ending'. Drawing on autobiographical experiences, this is the true story of transgender writer performer Kit Redstone's first entrance into a male gym changing room at the age of 33. What first appears as a

man. However, with this triumph comes a crisis of masculinity: what kind of man is he? Testosterone combines storytelling, comedy and physical theatre to offer an intimate, lifeenhancing glimpse into Kit's unique perspective. It also tells a powerful story about gender itself, charting Kit's own experiences as a new man stepping for the first time into the world of masculinity. Irreverent and refreshingly honest, Testosterone explores the sometimes toxic world of men and looks at the benefits and restraints Kit has observed whilst becoming a man. At the forefront of the UK’s transgender theatre movement, Kit Redstone’s work is leading the way towards making more inclusive, respectful theatre. Testosterone won Best Theatre Show at the Pleasance Indie Awards 2017, was nominated for the Peter Brook Empty Space Award 2017, and was featured as part of the British Council Showcase at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017.

I
t takes two years’ training to join this ensemble and this dedication was apparent throughout a dramatic show. The troupe played a variety of Taiko drums from small to massive; a muscular performer, stripped to the waist, pummelled the largest drum placed on a wooden frame which produced incredible reverberations alongside timpani and a huge bass drum. An intricate piece that mimicked a scuttling ant colony and added echoes of a horror film soundtrack ended with a thunderous explosion. A more theatrical second half added extra instruments and clever choreography while the thrilling big drum finale was a real showstopper. The stigma of one
I
’ve spent too much of the past week listening to people prattle on about Britney Spears. Britney, pop princess, champion of Las Vegas and chart topper – well if you like that kind of thing then hoorah! I admire her success and dare I say it survival. She’s certainly been through the mill on her professional journey and seems to have come out the other side reasonably intact.
“ Pride knows how to put on a
good show – but it also has the community at heart” So why all the fuss? Well by now you will no doubt know that Britney will be headlining Brighton’s annual Pride festival this year. Hats off to Paul Kemp and Dulcie Weaver for pulling this off, and I mean this wholeheartedly. Pride is a monster machine that they have taken on and tamed. I suspect that for a lot of the year it dominates the Pride Organisation’s lives and I also suspect that it is, for much of that time, a pretty thankless task. Last year they delivered perhaps the most exciting Pride ever with the Pet Shop Boys headlining with their spectacular show – all good. But above all of this razzamatazz they have put back what I believe should be at the heart of Pride. Yes to celebrating,
yes to having fun, yes to dressing up and going a bit wild – but not at the expense of remembering that Pride is the opportunity for us not only to look at our successes but to remember those other LGBTQI people around the world, and still here in the UK, who have not found equality and respect. Pride knows how to put on a good show – but it also has the community at heart, and in the last few years they have generated close to half a million pounds of funding for local charities and organisations, LGBTQI ones and those from the broader field too. Some of you seem to think that Britney Spears is wrong, that the organisation is wrong and that you can do better. Many have tried – and failed, failed dismally and at times disgracefully. Could these detractors do better? I somehow doubt it but I would be happy to listen to people's ideas and suggestions to improve the present model.
