here's a stack of good books by my bed, waiting to be read. I know they're good because they've been recommended. I've even read the backs of all of them and thought I can't wait to get stuck into that! And like a stack of Easter chocolate they present themselves as such a treat I don't know where to start, and a pleasure starts to morph into a list of which goes first and what time will I baggsy to devote myself to it. Something to be savoured, anticipated, and so I begin to hoard anticipation. I have good films stored up in my mind to be watched for the first time, just when I will appreciate them most. I even have a pair of brand new brushed cotton pyjama bottoms in their plastic bag in the back of my wardrobe, saved for just such a time as when I really need newness and comfy softness against my skin. I am the queen of anticipated gratification. Which was why I was surprised when, upon taking the Gatwick Express back from a weekend in London, I had a really delicious urge to get off the train at the airport and just pick a random destination for a few days away. I even had my passport very handy – as it was the ID I'd brought to prove I was me when I picked up the theatre tickets earlier. (Booked months earlier so as to be anticipated). I didn't fly. But I am looking at my stack of books in a new light. Perhaps they should be put away, save for the one I'm reading. That airport twinge reminded me it might be lovely to have lots of treats planned out ahead, but there is also something to be said for the unfettered impulse. Who knows I might just end up in Casablanca next weekend. On a whim's pursuit of a piano bar. At the very least, I'll definitely have a clearer bedside table.

ake is somewhat of a dark area in the knowledge of the western drinker and most people just know it as that rice wine from Japan. The funny thing is it’s not a wine, it’s not called sake and it’s not even made from RICE ok it is actually made from rice, but the rest is true. First things first, in Japan, sake means all alcoholic beverages (think of the way we use the term booze) so the real name for sake is nihonshu. In its simplest form nihonshu is a fermented grain drink made form rice, so unlike the popular opinion that it is more akin to wine, it is really more like beer. In fact, there are a lot of producers that are using rice to make more traditional beers and if you can buy Asahi Black I strongly suggest you give it a try to see how rice changes the flavour of a dark beer. The main reason that nihonshu differs from traditional beers in flavour and strength is that where we use yeast to ferment, Sake uses a mould called Koji. I understand that sounds gross, but yeast is literally a fungus so let’s not get on our high horses too quickly. So why should you try this exotic tipple? Well it has a surprising amount of advantages over our western alternatives. For a start, it is much lower in acidity which causes reflux and is also lower in histamines for those who aren’t a fan of wine headaches and let’s be honest who is? It also has hundreds of aroma and flavour components like wine but with the bonus of being able to be served at more temperature points than any other alcohol. I would advise being careful if warming nihonshu however, while it is heavily popularised it can sometimes ruin the flavour. Finally, I would say if you do try nihonshu (and I strongly suggest you do) the best range I have come across is produced by Akashi tai, especially the plum and yuzu variations which are great for those new to the drink. PALOMA FAITH Paloma Faith speaks with Neill Barston about motherhood, her new album The Architect, and the forthcoming tour bringing it to her live audience
ecoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests. For Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music. “I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album. The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. “I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent which does have an impact. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family.” As she recalls her childhood in East London, the half Spanish artist says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. “Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60’s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from. “Later, when I was studying, I got into R and B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be a dancer. Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose me,” she explains of her formative years. As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very
much his loss, and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her memorable debut album. To her credit, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10, and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now? “Well, that was nearly 10 years ago, and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an oversaturated market. But as she enthuses, she is not one to rest on her laurels, and ‘likes to mix things up a bit’ which is certainly the case with her latest material.
“ I’m flattered
by comparisons to Amy ” While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with. “I’m flattered by comparisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different. “When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group. “I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, ‘Price of Fame’, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness. “The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little more to think about with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from enjoying every single moment. Paloma Faith – The Architect tour, Brighton Centre, Monday 12 March 2018, Doors 6.30pm, from £39.05

New Venture Theatre presents the blistering American comedy Bad Jews by Joshua Harman
I
recently saw again that hit Broadway musical Spamalot, penned by Monty Python”s Eric Idle, and was reminded that after the initial productions the lyrics of one particular number were changed or sanitised to protect innocent provincial audiences. The line “You won’t get far on Broadway if you haven’t any Jews” was changed, Jews altered to stars. A lyric now without any bite and frankly a change that was to some extent theatrical ethnic cleansing. Taking it away was denying the huge impact of the Jewish people on the quality of theatre and in particular American theatre and comedy. I saw it as being a line in praise of a great creative force and certainly not one used in any derogatory sense. A few years ago I was lucky enough to see the hilarious comedy Bad Jews when it came from the USA. I loved every minute of it, every jibe and slur and really loved its rampant “Jewishness”!

This is a supercharged comedy, ferocious, jaw dropping, thoughtful – and still immensely funny – all at the same time. From a small “off Broadway” launch it has rapidly rolled out into hundreds of productions around the world.
uphold faith and tradition. But the big battle, one so many of us will recognise, is about which of them will inherit a symbolic item of jewellery left by their grandfather. It’s a play which shocks, surprises and delights in equal measure. The more outrageously the characters start to behave, the more the comedy builds up.
“ The more outrageously the
characters start to behave, the more the comedy builds up ”
It is the story of three young members of a New York Jewish family, plus girlfriend, reluctantly forced to share a bedsit apartment for the night, after the funeral of a beloved grandfather. And as the saying goes, there’s nothing like a death in the family to bring out the worst in people. Arguments flare up over who has the moral high ground, whether that’s about being a good family member or a bad one – or a “good Jew” or a “bad” one who doesn’t
Directed by Bob Ryder, Bad Jews promises to be a huge hit for the ever adventurous New Venture team and the production is being performed in their newly refurbished Theatre Upstairs, accessed by a flight of stairs. Expect bad language, racial stereotyping and plenty of laughs as this cleverly constructed comedy descends into hysterical family trauma. 1624 March, £8/7, www.newventure.org.uk 01273 746118

righton has a new large scale comedy night, and if this debut outing is anything to go by it could be set to become a muchloved institution. recently interviewed Tony Nicholson about his biography of Larry Grayson. Grayson was an extraordinary comedian and TV game show host who was, well to be honest he was camp – the epitome of the limpwristed pouff. He was not alone, British entertainment was peppered with campery – John Inman, Charles
“ If we demand respect and
acceptance and equality in society then we need to show all of those things ourselves” Hawtrey to name just two, and limpwristed, soft voiced and effeminate was their stock in trade. It wasn’t perhaps the best showing for an emerging gay community but at least it was something. Strangely there still seems to be an aversion to anything that treads the delicate path of effeminacy. With the ever expanding number of LGBTIQ “tribes” and what I have seen as a strong emergence of hypermasculine gay role types, are we not internally marginalising the gentler manifestations of our homosexuality? I was prompted to think about this after reading online a story about a “man of god” whose wife had requested

that they were served in a restaurant by a waiter who was, in her words, “less flamboyant”. I ask you, was she for real? I like flamboyant, I love it in fact, but when the word is used to disgracefully mean queer it makes my hackles rise. I’m flamboyant in the way I dress, I’m not the butchest boy in the band and I never have been. I could never pull of that ‘clone’ look back in the day, I don’t do leather, or rubber either. I went to Pride with friends one year and someone suggested that I try on a rubber kilt. I laughed and pointed out that a man of my size in a rubber kilt would look like a hovercraft! The point I am trying to make here is that the way we walk, the way we talk and the way we dress is the expression of the real you, the person that you are – and as such deserves respect. Respect from the world at large but also from within our own community. If we demand respect and acceptance and equality in society then we need to show all of those things ourselves. It’s time to stop marginalising ourselves, time to embrace your inner sissy if that is who you are and brush your bushy bear beards if that is what you are, rub down your rubber, buff up your leather, squeeze into your denim and simply be anything you choose to be. And apologies for not naming the lesbian stereotypes, let me just say that I love them all, but perhaps not the derogatory names attached to them. As Tom Robinson says – “Sing if you’re glad to be gay, sing if your happy that way,” and he wasn’t prescribing how you do it!
