‘Conventional’ wisdom

Scary stories

I

I

was taught twentieth century history at school by a former cardcarrying Communist. An interesting perspective when studying Tricky Dicky, Reaganomics and the Cuban Missile Crisis. We were also taught the rise of the Nazis, the Civil Rights Movement, and a smattering of Fascists of Italy in the Axis and Allies overview of World War II. And everything seemed quite clear. How could people not see that segregation and persecution was wrong? Obviously people in the past just didn’t understand. And I was glad I was benefiting from the wisdom of the present. My copy of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History Of The United States textbook included first person diary entries from people running to the North of America using the Underground Railway, escaping slavery, songs sung in protests... and conventional wisdom had me asking my grandfather in genuine confusion as to how it was this had happened in a modern world that he could remember. ‘Conventional’ wisdom of the time also had my mother not allowing me to play outside for two years after the Chernobyl accident – if it was raining. Sounds paranoid now, but then terms like ‘acid rain’ were being bandied about with the same gay abandon as ‘mason jar’ and ‘moustache wax’ is now. Current ‘conventional’ wisdom advises us to check our sources so as to watch out for ‘fake news’, and to expect trolling when expressing anything remotely political on Twitter. Hopefully this will be seen as its own paranoia of the times. ‘Conventional’ wisdom is one of those riverlike things – always there but always changing. So not very conventional after all.

@Louisxmichael

am sick and tired of the news. And I know I’m not the only one. How often have you found yourself turning on the TV, flicking to the news, and being greeted with nothing but one reason after another to lose faith in humanity? We used to have a small TV in our kitchen. Every evening at dinner we would switch on the TV at 7 o’clock and turn the channel to the Channel 4 news. Then, while we ate our dinner and discussed our lives and argued and laughed and talked over each other, Jon Snow would report how many soldiers had been brutally killed in needless wars, or how a young child full of promise and life was murdered in a senseless act of violence, or how many times a young mother of two was stabbed. It’s cringeworthy to read, isn’t it? So why have we become so desensitised to hearing it? Why are we so used to the news telling us that we live in a horrible world? Is it because we believe it, and we see no reason to disagree anymore? I remember thinking even as a child how strange it was that the news only ever informed us of sad things. It made no sense to me. The world was scary, but it wasn’t only scary. Therefore why did the news only show the scary parts? It didn’t make sense. It felt as if they wanted to scare us. Because it does more than simply make us depressed. This perpetual stream of negative information makes it seem like the world is worse than it is. If we were to live our lives by the news we’d have to barricade ourselves indoors and say goodbye to ever stepping foot outside again for fear of the crime and danger that seems to lurk round every single corner, waiting for us to become another statistic on the news. But we know that’s not the case. We leave our houses every day. We smile at people on the bus. We say thank you to the cashier. We make small talk on the train platform. This world isn’t scary, it’s beautiful. Don’t believe the news. LATEST 7/HOMES

OF MICE AND MEN

A powerful story about friendship and holding on to your dreams

N

obel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s classic American novel, Of Mice And Men, will be live on stage at Theatre Royal Brighton for one week only from Monday 12 – Saturday 17 March. Based on his own experiences in the twenties, Of Mice And Men tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant ranch workers who dream of owning their own ranch. With nothing but the clothes on their back and a dream, the wily and bright George aspires to independence, to be his own boss and most importantly to be ‘somebody’. Gentle giant Lennie aspires to be with George and join him in his Eden, but as the saying goes – the best laid schemes of mice and men, often go awry.

Set in the trying times of the Great Depression, when millions were forced to travel in search of a job and their dreams, Of Mice And Men is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heart

tough times and a faceless destiny. A tale still relevant to modern times. Guy Unsworth, Director of the show says “Of Mice And Men is one of the great American stories that has

Considered a controversial play, this brand new adaptation promises to bring to the stage a magical and imaginative story about trying to hold on to your dreams and friendships during fiercely

stood the test of time. It’s not only about the Great Depression in 1930s rural America but a timeless tale of loyalty and the struggles for survival in a cruel and competitive world. For me it is also one of the most beautiful stories ever told – both heartwarming and

heartbreaking at the same time. I fell in love with it when I studied it as a teenager, so it's always been on my bucket list to direct and when I mention the title, so many people have a great fondness for it too. I can’t wait to bring it back to the stage.” Of Mice And Men is presented by the producers of Avenue Q, The Crucible, American Idiot and Flashdance. Don’t miss it. t’s 2018 and the modern world changes fast. When you think about the advances made in the last century compared to those made in the 1,900 years before it is remarkable – and yet in many ways we still live in the dark ages. We have technology that astonishes, arts that challenge and politics that sometimes terrifies and occasionally fills the heart with a little hope. But when it comes to human relationships we are as hopeless today as we have ever been.

“ How do we find out about the finer details of sex? ” Equality in the LGBTQI world has moved on, things are better, not perfect, but better. We managed to defeat the evil Clause 28 in all its terrible forms, we managed to finally get gay marriage, as opposed to civil partnerships, that flawed half way house that was as unequal as ever if looked at with a seeing mind. And there is certainly no room for complacency, whilst we have it “good”, the rest of the world is still riddled with vile and violent homophobia. But one area that we still have far to go with and that remains in the Dark Ages is the scarily hopeless way we deal with sex education. Sex education is not really about sex but in truth rather more about procreation. Whilst it is important that we teach that

element of the life cycle, it rather neglects the fact that sex is a source of great pleasure and excitement and in relationships often bondforming. But where do we learn about that? It’s all well and good to know the mechanics, but if we had all stuck to the mechanics life would be a much much duller place. Of course most of us would have been terrified at the idea that mum or dad would go any further than explaining the mechanics, because we nearly all find the act of sex taboo and embarrassing, something private and personal. So how do we find out about the finer details of sex? We learn it from others, often older others and we learn it from erotic art. The history of art is littered with erotica, some of it rather explicit and for centuries much of it locked away. So where else? Well it has to be pornography. Porn, where the camera invades the most private of moments, well perhaps not always private, but that’s another story. Of course pornography can be demeaning, can be exploitative and destructive, but for many of us, porn was the text book from which we leaned about sex and not always in a food way. Maybe there is a better way, but is anyone brave enough to do that? Only a few.
