his week I met some lovely people. I know, we all know lovely people, big whoop. These were people I’d never crossed paths with before, who had come into town to see the opening night of former Mansun frontman Paul Draper’s new tour. An old friend of mine (also lovely, but I already knew that) had invited me to go along with him to the show and to meet some of his fellowfans in the pub beforehand. Now, I’m not sure what I was expecting, with nothing in common but a single musical artist, but I had already heard tell of close friendships being formed in online fan chat rooms for Jared Letos’ band Thirty Seconds To Mars, so colour me curious here. When people are bonded by something that they love it’s special. I’ve never really thought it before, but when I do it’s clear that cancelled commuter trains and being a seagull bomb casualty is easy conversation to strike up to make a new friendship, but it’s certainly not positive. There’s a connection between a whole group of people over a complaint. Compare that to the one person who ‘gets’ you because they can name the same number of Doctor Who assistants as you can, and really we’re missing out on an awful lot of positive bonding. I wasn’t as familiar with the music as this new posse who had kindly welcomed me were, but I wasn’t greeted with judgement. I caught the odd sidelong look as the show continued, seeing if I was catching and realising the magic that had bonded them all together from their different paths in life and train stations in the south east. And I did. But not least because they did. It’s brilliant when you are allowed to share a precious magic, and super generous of them too. So I’m a fan of fans. I think there should be more of them. They’re fantastic.

s I write this I’m sat in the front of a campervan sandwiched between two of my best friends driving across New Zealand. Rain from cyclone Gita is pouring on the windshield, but it doesn’t dampen our spirits, and only adds to the view of the misty mountains that cluster round the endlessly winding panoramic roads that have been our view for the last week. At the moment we’re picking out signs of the storm that raged last night; bent sign posts, fallen trees, mud slides that have carved the sides of these colossal mountains into a wreckage of rocks and debris. Thankfully we found a surprisingly tranquil lake to park by during the night and we rode out the storm with bowls of soup and mugs of hot chocolate. But in the light of day it’s impossible not to be humbled by the sheer strength and indifference of Mother Nature. On an island dominated by nature She rules supreme here, and I get the clear impression that the humans are guests here on Her island paradise. And that’s what this country is: paradise. The cyclone was a 24hour long chaotic blip in an otherwise unparalleled world of tranquility. We’ve driven hundreds of kilometres (don’t get me started on the incessant confusion of metric conversion) and I’ve still yet to tire of the breathtaking vistas either side of our little house on wheels. The mountains here are covered in old forests teeming with native flora and fauna that put our common English oak to shame. We trekked through a forest alongside a river that was full of this amazing springy moss; at one point I voluntarily abandoned my shoes and literally bounced my way through the forest. One morning we parked by a giant crystal lake bordered by snow capped mountains, whipped out our camping chairs, and had cereal while listening to the lapping waves and feeling the sun on our faces reflected off the clear blue surface. This country is phenomenal. If the beauty of nature excites you, then there is nowhere more exciting than New Zealand.

SARA PASCOE Comedian, author, actress, singer, playwrite – Sara Pascoe is the quadruple threat. She speaks exclusively with Victoria Nangle about her new show LadsLadsLads, sisters, and Taskmaster

How are you today Sara? I'm great thank you! I'm recovering from flu and looking forward to seeing the outside world again. So – is LadsLadsLads the story of your own 'Eat Drink Pray' adventure? Exactly, it's like that book but with less pasta and sex on the floor, more white wine, football matches and worrying about getting murdered. Once you've started an epic adventure journey like that, trying out life classes and new things, isn't it difficult to stop? It's been really great for me personally, I have a much more 'yes' attitude and it is leading me to fresh experiences and to be a bit braver. And it's good for material too because suddenly I find myself in places that I shouldn't be. I think we can limit ourselves as we get older, its so easy to stay with what is familiar but we only grow when we push ourselves. That sounds too preachy. But there is life in novelty, in newness. What thing would you still love to do, if the laws of finance, gravity, and probability were all put to one side? I want to go to Vegas, I am gonna try and go this year.

I want to see the Magic Mike show and marry a stranger. How is your new book on masculinity coming on? There has been a lot of research so far, but I have learned so much, so that's the best thing about writing really. What is the most extreme example of Mansplaining that you've experienced, considering your extensive research for 'Animal'? I don't get much really. I don't tend to use that word either, it is quite inflammatory and I try

Your show in Brighton falls on the day before International Women's Day. What is your favourite thing about being female? Obviously I don't know what it is like not to be female, but my favourite thing is having sisters. They are both younger than me, and have children now and are married and I am so proud of them and the way they live their lives. Cheryl is a teacher, which I think is the most important job in the world. And they really make me laugh too, I feel very lucky to have them.

“ I want to see the Magic Mike show and marry a stranger ” to keep my frustration levels down. Lots of my book is a laying out of research rather than saying 'this thing is right' so I welcome other opinions as part of the discussion. There is a tendency to feel attacked by people who disagree with us, and I'm trying to get better at listening without affront. Mostly when people write to me with their opinions or experience it is useful and interesting.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every series of Taskmaster, but it does like to be a little brutal. Is there a task that you would like to set for Greg Davies and Alex Horne as a response to a series of their tasks? Yeah, the whole thing of that show is that Alex is going to make you look like an idiot and Greg is going to call you an idiot. It's horrible having to watch yourself back making terrible decisions when it

seems so obvious what you should do from the studio. The idea of Greg and Alex having to do the tasks while every contestant who came 4th or 5th gets to judge them, that is the only payback! Years ago I caught you in the musical Gutted, and then more recently in last year's Comic Relief singing and dancing. Would you ever perform in another musical or – and I think this would be awesome – write and perform in your own musical? Yes yes, I would love to. Either performing or writing one, I really hope I get to do that. What plans do you have professionally and personally for the next 12 months? Finishing my book and then starting my tour. My radio series started on 20th February on Radio 4 too. And off the back of LadsLadsLads… pint or yoga? Yoga first, pint after. Life is about balance. Yoga is literally about balance. Sara Pascoe: LadsLadsLads, Brighton Dome, Sunday Wednesday 7 March 2018, 8pm, £19/15

RAMBERT See Rambert perform in Brighton this March, with three dances that reflect the times we live in

T

he evening will feature Goat, a darkly funny dance theatre creation that dissects the pleasure and pain of performing in our imperfect world. Choreographed by rising star Ben Duke, it is infused with the music and spirit of Nina Simone, featuring some of her best loved songs performed live by an on stage band. “In the village where I was brought up there was a tradition on New Year’s Eve of writing on a piece of paper two things you wanted to rid yourself of – it could be something bad that had happened to you, or something bad that you had done. The pieces of paper were placed inside a can which was tied to the tail of a goat. The goat was supposed to disappear over the horizon and take our sins with it.

Usually it ran for five seconds or so then stopped to eat some grass. Some years it came running back towards us,” explains Ben Duke. The high speeds of Symbiosis echo the urban pulse created in our cities every day. This celebration of the Rambert dancers’ skills is

dynamic patterns of behaviour and energy created in cities each and every day in our effort to exist in this technological era.” Completing the programme is a special guest appearance from Julie Cunningham & Company with To Be Me, an expressive work exploring

“ There are different types of energy, different types of intensity ” by internationally acclaimed dancemaker Andonis Foniadakis, with a new score by BAFTA and Ivor Novello Award nominated composer Ilan Eshkeri. Andonis Foniadakis says: “Symbiosis is inspired by the

gender and identity. The work is inspired by the mythical character Tiresias, who the gods turn from man to woman for seven years. It is set to Kate Tempest’s rhythmic, hip hop influenced reworking of the Greek myth from her poetry collection Hold Your Own.

“I first saw Kate perform at Glastonbury Festival in 2015,” comments Julie Cunningham. “I was really amazed by the rhythm and intensity of her work. When I was thinking of creating the work, I wanted to see how I could use the rhythm of the voice and breath of the spoken word. I was interested in the story of Tiresias as someone who experienced life as both man and woman. More than thinking about gender in binary terms I wondered how we could inhabit multiple qualities of gender from a spectrum of possibilities that do not draw a line in the middle.” Theatre Royal Brighton Wednesday 21 – Saturday 24 March 0844 871 7650* atgtickets.com/brighton* *Booking fees apply. ANDREW KAY Dines Out On your marks…

S

o one week I am extolling the virtues of a classic plate of food and then here I am raving about something at the cutting edge of modern cuisine. Yes, I’m back at The Set and I loved it. Mr L and I have always been “ladies who lunch” and our favourite time to do it is Saturday. Back in the day we preferred dim sum, and we still enjoy that, but if you think hard, small plate dining is a contemporary take on dim sum, rather more so than it is tapas. The Set do it brilliantly but in a recent menu change their cafe offering, rebranded as The Set Bar, is more relaxed than ever and unlike the evening dining where a set menu, or three, is what’s on offer, here you can pick as few or as many dishes as you like from

“ Chocolate nuggets – a wickedly

clever confection worth a visit all of their own ”

a menu specially created for the bar and order drinks from the newly named bar The Fix, as chef Dan Kenny and his talented team has taken on the complete food and beverage operation at the Artists Residence Hotel. I trust chef Dan Kenny so left the choices to him. It’s a good ruse I admit because they are bound to show off. Mr L is purging right now so had a mocktail, a rare thing as anyone who knows him will recognise but one he raved about, how times change. I had a rhubarb spritz, a flamboyant delight that hit exactly the right spot. Food arrives as and when it is ready and the deal is to simply tuck in and share. So here we go with what will seem like a ridiculously long list. First out were some suckling pig and cheese croquettes, what a way to go, crisp outside and filled with an unctuous mix of tender piggy and cheesy bechamel. Our grins started to form and expanded on the

arrival of Alexander buds, wild flower with an extraordinary slightly bitter floral flavour that worked so well with the puddle of hollandaise. Creamy whipped potato and buttermilk was equally satisfying, speckled with herby oil and topped with crisp potato skins, it was a dish we kept going back to. In contrast a salad of beetroot, feta, mint and pear was crisp and refreshing, cool watery notes, sweetness and salty cheese in perfect harmony. Miso leeks with pine kernels had that delicious scorched flavour that so many get wrong. There’s a fine line between scorched and burnt and here it was just right. Squid bun with roast garlic aioli was a great big delight that we were happy to share, although next time I want my own. Squid can be such a let down, tough and tasteless, but here the lightly griddled beast was as tender as can be, the bun a scary black but sweet enriched dough delighted and the watercress and sweet garlic made it a wonderfully whole dish. I love charcuterie and Moons Green Farm’s boozy rabbit sausage was wildly exciting, full of gamey rabbit flavours but clearly soused in some heady booze – and served with a buzzy kimchi dip. I will be looking for that again. We rounded off our savoury delights with Mrs Bell’s blue and brown bread crackers – creamy, salty and very moreish. It would have been rude not to do desserts and we were wowed by blood orange madeleines with cream, a grown up take on the Jaffa cake – but far better, melted marshmallows, and finally chocolate nuggets with hazelnuts and salted caramel, a wickedly clever confection worth a visit all of their own. Brilliant food and brilliantly priced with most dishes at £4 and a few at £5, our cheese only £3 – well it all added up to about £16 each without our drinks, but we had for that price the equivalent of a very good tasting menu that would have cost as much as double elsewhere. We will both be back very soon I am sure. The Set, 33 Regency Square, Brighton BN1 2GG 01273855572 thesetrestaurant.com

I

have never had any interest in sport, which when you take even the briefest glance at my physique should come as no surprise. My body has never been a temple that’s for sure. As a teenager I would create projects that seemed so worthy that I would be excused football, cricket and gym. The only exercise I regularly indulged in was swimming, well not the only exercise but let’s not go into that here. Back in the last 1960s and early 70s I could

“ My body is a bit of a car crash,

feeble, chubby and… well let’s face it, falling apart at the seams ” often be found painting murals in children’s homes. I was the master of the fantasy landscape, a world of toadstools and fairies! In fact at school I was know as one of the fairies from the bottom of the art room. As a grown up I attended one football match, went to Wimbledon a few times and later grew interested in cricket, but not in any great way. As a result I am unfit, my body is a bit of a car crash, feeble, chubby and… well let’s face it, falling apart at the seams. In a forthcoming episode of AK Soufflé my guest is the chairman of the Brighton and Hove Sea Serpents Rugby Football Club, Ian

Chaplin. Ian has played the game, but these days manages the team and their match schedule, no mean task as it seems to be a rather demanding role. I find so many of the guests on my show an inspiration, not in the sense that I want to be them or do what they do, but because that they simply get on with it. Now that is inspiring. I’m sure though that many of you will be inspired and find that what they do is indeed something that you might want to do or to be. Perhaps you do have a hankering to hunker down in the scrum, if indeed Rugby League includes scrums? My knowledge of the game is entirely based on growing up in St Helens and The Saints play League and not Union. Anyway back to the Sea Serpents… Having made contact I thought it would be a good idea to have Latest TV’s sports editor Jamie Walker include reports on the Sea Serpents’ progress as a regular part of his coverage. Jamie was delighted to do so and it reminded me how passionate we all are at Chateau L’Atest about diversity and inclusivity. Jamie was in total agreement that primarily the Sea Serpents are a sporting side, and that they are made up mainly of players from the LGBTQI community was merely incidental. It’s heartening being a part of a team that thinks in this way, there’s no place for prejudice of any kind here at Latest. As Latest Bill says “we don’t think diversity, we are diversity!”.
