Snow Day!!!
T
I
he snow has arrived – we’ve made snow angels, thrown snowballs into the sea from the end of the pier to confuse the seagulls, and spotted how many houses have good roofing insulation in our area (it’s the ones where the snow hasn’t melted off). The Beast From The East has blown in and had the very British consequence of excessive queuing in Redhill. It’s also brought a new flu season. Or is it really the flu? It used to be that if you were off ill you had to have ‘the flu’, otherwise it was ‘just a cold’. I’m not quite sure where this idea that the flu was the big brother of a cold came from. The flu has a fever, the shivers, exhaustion, that kind of thing. A cold is an obvious virus that makes you sneeze, cough, have a headache and feel like rubbish. You can have mild flu or a heavy cold – who’s the one giving them a hierarchy, man? Viral conspiracy theories aside, it doesn’t really benefit anyone to get into a competition. The same goes for the concept of ‘man flu’ being an over reaction. Someone’s feeling crummy and that’s all you need to know. No need to use your on point toxic masculinity to dismiss someone else’s lurghy. That’s just multitasking high school meanness. I think what I’m trying to say through my germspattered words (I’m not naming it, I’ll not fuel the flu vs cold debate further) is that enough in life is a competition, feeling under the weather doesn’t have to be too. I’ll take the words of advice who think they had what I’m having. And after a few days of feeling like my head’s in a raincloud I’ll emerge with a croaky voice, in recovery, and seeing which blues and old school jazz numbers I can enjoy the most while I sound like Barry White. And he didn’t have a cold or the flu.
Victoria Nangle
s there anything more magical than the words ‘snow day’? Perhaps not as much for an adult, but for a child the only thing that ranks higher on the list of exciting phrases is the ‘C’ word itself (I was talking about Christmas, I hope you were too). So it’s with a happy heart that I think of all the children who are waking up this week and eagerly darting to their windows to tear open the curtains and see whether they’ve had their school sentence lifted for a single day of frozen fun. Across the country memories are being made that will be discussed with so much warm fondness for years to come, all thanks to some frozen water falling from the sky at an unexpected time of the year. Nature is funny, but we humans are funnier. I remember and treasure all my snow days as golden moments in my childhood. I was 12 years old when it snowed in April and I made my first ever snowman. I could not believe (and still can’t quite) that we had enough snow to even make a snowman (although I do remember the grass was exposed all round nearby by the time we were done!). And we didn’t even scrimp in size, it was adult size and taller than my little 12yearold self! We gave him all the trimmings, hat, scarf, and I think it was a peach nose, probably because that was the only thing in the kitchen. I remember standing there looking at something I never thought I would ever be able to make with the one inch of snow that we usually got at home, and being so excited to do it all again next year. Of course, English weather would never have the decency to be that predictable. We didn’t get another proper snow day for a few years after that, by which time the childish enthusiasm had been replaced somewhat by good old fashioned English grumbling, and it was more important that I talk about how cold I was rather than how tall a snowman I could make. But this time I’m meeting the Beast Of The East with that same childhood enthusiasm. So if you’ll excuse me, I’m late for my snowball fight.

VEGFEST Discover the joys of plantbased living at 10th annual VegfestUK Brighton on March 2425 at the Brighton Centre
P
lantbased lifestyles have attracted plenty of interest from a selection of celebrities, media and health professionals endorsing a diet free from animal products. In the wake of record number of signups for Veganuary – an annual monthlong pledge in living vegan for a month – you may be tempted to put in your diary one of the nation's biggest events for plantbased living – VegfestUK Brighton – on March 2425 at the Brighton Centre. A wide range of plantbased produce will be showcased by a selection of businesses based in or around Brighton at the event. Amongst these businesses are Katie’s Nuttery, who’re making their own artisan nut butters and nut mylks in Brighton. Happy Maki, a favourite in the street food catering scene, has recently launched a vegan sushi shop in Brighton to offer dinein options. Local ice cream parlour Boho Gelato will be offering their own dairyfree flavours to visitors at the show. To demonstrate that vegan options are not restricted to food and drinks, Surreybased companies Made By Coopers and Indigenous Beauty offer clean organic aromatherapy products and natural handmade deodorant creams respectively, whilst Brightonbased company Eden Perfumes has a large amount of flavours for their perfumes – all made without the use of animal ingredients and without animal testing.
“ Raw Cacao & Hazelnut Tarts and Raspberry Ripple NoCheese Cheesecake ”
A number of highcalibre musicians will be entertaining a big crowd with their acoustic songs at a talent contest to be judged by a group of celebrities within the plantbased living scene. Judges include singer Rozalla (renowned for her hit single ‘Everybody’s Free’), actor Peter Egan, actress Wendy Turner Webster, presenter Jasmine Harman, and vet Marc Abraham. Dozens of vegan comedians will be entertaining visitors to VegfestUK Brighton with their witty stories and humour. Headlining the festival on the Saturday is awardwinning comic, published author and mental health campaigner Dave Chawner, whilst on Sunday, attention turns to UK comedy circuit regular Chris Stokes. A dozen other comedians who follow a plantbased diet will be sharing a series of their own vegan stories on top of their own punchlines, with local comedians including the likes of Liam Cook, James Cartwright and many others. The festival also consists of 19 globally inspired caterers serving a series of mouthwatering plantbased cuisine, ranging from pizzas, curries, fishless “fish and chips”, to falafel wraps, burgers, hot dogs, ice cream amongst a long list of sumptuous food varieties, plus around 60 quality speakers hosting dozens of talks and cookery demos, on top of a series of panels and workshops on healthy living and ethical lifestyles, a kids’ area and an art exhibition. Tickets are available both in advance and on the gate. Advance day tickets are priced at £7.70 for adults and £4.40 for concessions (including 10% booking fee) – these are available to buy online at www.brighton.vegfest.co.uk/tickets up until the morning of the event weekend. Meanwhile, tickets on the gate cost £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. Kids under 16 can enter for free as long as they are accompanied by adults.

DANE BAPTISTE A regular on TV comedy panel shows, master of his own sitcom with Sunny D, and acclaimed stand up Dane Baptiste talks with Victoria Nangle about being pigeonholed, his sister, and Nando’s.
Hi, Dane how are you today? Hi Victoria; today I’m hungover, apparently sushi and copious amounts of French Vodka aren’t a good combination. Other than that and the continued threat of Nuclear War from the American President, I’m aiight. You've been touring overseas of late. Have you had to tailor your British experience observational humour at all? Gratefully; not so much. My experiences previously meant that I’m more aware of the nuance of different countries and so I do my best to not make references to Anglo centric. Also the influence of imperial rule means most people understand Britishness very well. You have a very intelligent and thoughtful perspective on many issues, but you've also said you don't want to be pigeonholed as a 'clever comedian'. Obviously everybody is a complex kaleidoscope of pigeonholes. Which of yours do you feel is most often overlooked when your comedy is being described, and why do you think that is? If I had to choose I’d say the surreal stuff. I always endeavour to balance the
serious and the silly, but a lot of critics overlook it. I think a lot of my detractors think my intelligence stems from an ‘icarus complex’; and so typically they’ll say I’m taking on too many subjects, I however think audiences can handle the depth, and also it means your creations can be read on a number of levels. 'G.O.D.' feels like it has a lot more of an overview of the big ideas – Gold, oil and drugs. What latest big idea is tickling your brain at the moment? They’re loads at the moment, but currently I’m working on a
I think that it’s broadened my horizons across all of these things! One of the best things about comedy has been learning about the varied and nuanced experiences from my contemporaries, as well as travel the world and learning about different cultures first hand. Can you give an example of how being recognised has affected your life in the last year? I got a free meal from a somewhat prestigious fast food restaurant. It made me feel like I’d arrived. Now if I

sitcom about the gig economy and interracial relationships, a podcast about the state of the world and ideas regarding romantic comedies. A lot of ideas in the foetal stages, but I’ll keep you all posted! This is your third successful solo show. How do you think that success may have changed your perspective on things – politics, relationships, finance?
can get a legendary Nando’s black card, (they claim it’s a myth) life would be made. Gastronomically anyway. You often speak about how different you and your twin sister are – what do you think each of you would take away if you had to live each others' lives for 24 hours? I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I’d make it. But really if I was
my sister for a day I feel like a lot of time would be spent apologising to me. Will there be any more sees or episodes of Sunny D in the pipeline? I’m hoping so; currently the show is on hiatus, but if we can get a movement for people that want it to contact the Beeb, I’m sure it could happen. In an ideal world, what would the major events of 2018 be for you? A friend of mine, whom is very much into astrology said that Saturn’s influence will reveal truths whether people like it or not. And I think that there’s a lot of global ignorance and apathy that can’t continue, so I’m looking forward to it. Also it’s the Age Of Aquarius, and we are seeing that sexual abuse in the industry won’t be tolerated anymore and I hope that the trend of weeding out abusers in all industries and walks of life continues. Also me being recognised as one of the best comedians of my generation. That would be nice, and stop my mum talking about Grandkids. Dane Baptiste: G.O.D. (Gold. Oil. Drugs.), Komedia, Thursday 12 April, 8pm, £12

A&E comedy bring their critically acclaimed and award winning social satire Enter The Dragons to the stage with a show that gives ageing a right ol’ kick up the arse. Winner of Best of the Brighton Fringe 2017’ Enter the Dragons comes from a place of frustration and returns fire with an irreverent, and at times absurd, show that pokes fun at the challenges facing women as they age. “We’re fed up with negative, caricatured portrayals of older women, and are giving a rallying cry of joyful dissent to all women. We hope that the show speaks to anyone who is considering ageing! There’s a common misconception that as you get older you are doomed to life of hot flushes, swollen ankles and cardigan wearing. REVIEW Robin Ince: Pragmatic Insanity
B
eing an avid listener of Robin Ince and Brian Cox’s Radio 4 podcast The Infinite Monkey Cage, and attending a number of their live Christmas Compendiums, I was interested to see comedian Robin Ince minus his science sidekick. Billed as a ninety minute show about art and science, Robin’s inability to stay on topic means it lasts 2.5 hours and includes tangents as diverse as knitting, suicide, canal boat TV shows and goats. Happily the space for spontaneity that his solo stand up allows for only further showcases and shares his enthusiasm and infectious wonder at the world. The Old Market, 28 February 2018 ★★★★★

Good neighbours?

rrrrrrrr!!! Yes BRRRRRRRR!!! It’s been cold, very cold, and pretty as a blanket of the white stuff can look, it does bring problems. A few weeks ago I was joined by Bernadette Ashcroft from Age UK and we talked about the issues that surround our ever growing elderly LGBTQI community. We’re all living longer, that’s a fact, and as the cost of living rises and elderly care is diminished there are bound to be issues.
“ I’m writing this in the hope that we
are a city that cares, a city with a heart and at that heart equality ”
Yesterday I was on the telly reading the news, yes you can see me now reading Latest TV News every Tuesday at 6pm. There was snow falling hard outside and I went in to talk to the team and suggested that I add a little to the script. I wanted to remind viewers that out there are many people who, for whatever reason, are less able to deal with the severe weather conditions. I mean I struggled on the snow getting in and I consider myself to be reasonable able still. But if you are infirm, or less able, or isolated or poor… well let’s face it, there are innumerable reasons why a person might need a little help when the weather gets rough and the going gets tough.
Now I know that this column is usually focused on gay issues, but right now I feel that it’s time to talk about a real equality. I want to live in a world where we are all equal, so equal that the word ‘equality’ is made redundant. I want us all to think about those around us and I decided to urge people to think about their neighbours, knock on doors and make sure that people are safe. You can ask if they have food, check that they have enough of their regular medication, if indeed they need medication, and check that they are warm enough – cold is a killer. All these are vital factors for people who might be less able to cope with extreme weather conditions. But in addition, why not offer a little company, stop and take a while to chat, make your neighbour feel cared for and valued, who knows you might make a new friend and in addition – who knows when you might be in need of the same kindness. What goes around comes around. I’m writing this in the hope that as a city we are a city that cares, a city without prejudice and a city with heart, and at the centre of that heart is equality. By now the snow may have gone, but the need to embrace everyone into a cohesive community will not have gone. Get knocking on those doors!
