Top trees For most of us, Christmas only really begins once we’re decorating the tree – although the trend over the last couple of years for artificial, pre-lit trees has put paid to this tradition for some. According to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA), around 30 percent of us opt for a fake Christmas tree – and this year, for those that want to fake it, the trend is for black or white. Best suited to contemporary settings, keep ornamentation as minimal as possible, and admire their rather stark simplicity. Many people think fake trees are a greener option, because they can be re-used and don’t leave a mess. Before you opt for one, though, remember that fashions change, many are manufactured in the Far East (using petro-chemicals in their transportation here), and if not re-used will end up in a landfill site somewhere. So if you choose a fake tree, make sure you re-use it. The strongest trend this year, though, is for a good, old-fashioned real tree: the remaining 70 percent of us will opt for the real thing. Most are crop-grown and sold to garden centres and shops, though it‘s possible to buy direct from the growers if you visit Christmas

tree plantations. Some growers (like Wilderness Woods near Uckfield) even allow you to choose and dig up your own tree. If you can’t buy direct, look for one labelled as grown in Britain by a member of the BCTGA, an indication that the tree is good quality and freshly harvested. Both rooted and rootless trees should be brought indoors at the last possible moment, kept away from radiators and watered regularly. Real trees are probably the most environmentally-friendly solution, as they can be planted out and reused, or recycled for wood chippings and mulch.

Shiny, happy Christmas As with trees, the key trend for tree and home decorations this year is natural: dried flowers, fruits, seeds, or shells sprayed in white or silver with festive ribbon; vases of painted twigs hung with tiny lights or dried grasses; eucalyptus wreaths and garlands of ivy and dried hops all sit happily among the glitter and sparkle. Glass and old-fashioned tin ornaments are also very in – anything for a homy, old fashioned feel. You could even think about making your own or bribing your/ someone else‘s kids – did you know that crafting is very in these days? Seasonal shapes in soft felt, snowflake paper garlands, white-iced starshaped biscuits, clove-studded oranges and painted bottle tops make for a very cheery, unique tree. What better excuse to get out the glitter and glue (and possibly a glass of mulled wine) and get creative?

Jamie on the SmartPhone market, a worm in Facebook and Adobe job losses Apple Tops SmartPhone market Apple toppled Microsoft in the third quarter from the number three spot in the smartphone operating system market. The success of the iPhone 3G propelled the Mac OS X past Windows Mobile for the first time worldwide and in the United States, according to the research firm, Gartner. While the latest SmartPhone market numbers from Gartner had good news for Apple, the industry as a whole, didn’t do so well recording its weakest year-on-year growth rate since Gartner began tracking the industry. Sales in the quarter rose by 11.5 percent from the same period last year to 36.5 million units. Apple saw iPhone sales soar more than 320 percent to 4.7 million units making the company the third biggest seller of SmartPhones and SmartPhone operating systems. Browser wars Mozilla’s Firefox has seen steady growth in market share this year reaching more than 20 percent as Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) has fallen below 70 percent. As of the end of November Firefox had a 20.78 percent share while IE had fallen to 69.77 percent. Throughout the year Firefox usage on the Web has grown steadily starting in January with a 16.98 percent share. Internet Explorer started the year with a 75.47 percent share. Also showing steady growth is Apple's Safari browser which rose to 7.13 percent after starting the year with a 5.82 percent share. Google Chrome topped one percent, when launched in September and soon fell below that mark. Facebook worm A worm, based on another discovered in August, responsible for sending Facebook users malicious code has appeared on the market. Known as Koobface the worm only affects social networking sites. Users receive a message in their inbox announcing “You look funny in this new video” or something similar. Users are then invited to click on a link to a video site where another message says an update of Flash is needed before the video can be displayed. The viewer is prompted to open a file called Flash_Player.exe. If the user approves the Flash installation Koobface attempts to download a program called Tinyproxy.exe. Koobface loads when the computer next reboots and then redirects internet browsers to malicious content. Green O2 In what it claims is the first such move by a UK operator, O2’s new Universal Charger has the potential to slash energy consumption by up to 70 percent as well as helping Britons to save more than £30 million a year, according to the mobile giant. The new charger will come with different leads so it will fit most mobiles and adheres to the strict criteria laid out by the US Energy Star rating guidelines, in addition to boasting a power control system to avoid energy wastage. The new Universal Charger is available now at a cost of £14.99. Adobe job losses Hit by the global economic slowdown Adobe has announced it will cut 600 jobs whilst also lowering its revenue expectations for the fourth quarter. The job cuts will be made worldwide and account for about eight percent of Adobe’s total workforce, which stood at 7,623 at the end of September. The economic slowdown led to lower than expected sales of Adobe’s new Creative Suite 4 software package, which went on sale during the fourth quarter in North America and Europe, the company said. Creative Suite 4 includes products such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver. The news caused Adobe’s stock price to fall seven percent to $20.95 per share in after-hours trading. On Saturday 29 October 2008, the Hilton Brighton Metropole was transformed into a land of Eastern promise and Asian mystery for The Rockinghorse Silk Ball (sponsored by RDF IT Solutions and Skerritts Independent Financial Advisors). The evening began with a drinks reception in the Japanese bar area followed by a three-course dinner designed for Rockinghorse by Michelin star chef and TV personality Atul Kochhar. The evening of entertainment was compered by GMTV’s Marcella Whittingdale and began with dance from K-Bis Theatre School. Following on and throughout the evening, there were chances to win some superb prizes, an auction and some great fundraising games were played. After dinner, there were free dodgems and great attractions in the Hong Kong Room with music from live bands. More than 450 people attended and £87, 000 was raised for ill, injured and disabled children. An amazing event and many thanks go to everybody involved. Gavin Fisher, overseeing his first Rockinghorse ball as chief executive, said: “It is a tribute to the people of Sussex that they continue to support our vital work in these difficult times.”

Almost every week, there’s breaking news relating to the King Alfred project, and frankly, it has been hard to keep up. Now the development in its Gehry incarnation has finally died, there really is a discussion to be had – and I have strong views on what should happen next. A referendum should be held. The people of Brighton and Hove are so disillusioned with the whole process, it will take years to heal the damage that has been done. Giving residents a proper say in what happens around them is the first step towards pacification. I am happy to leave it to our elected representatives to decide exactly what should be voted upon though it should be a major element. “But having a referendum on this might set a precedent for other important proposals.” Erm… That’s the idea, stupid!

Hove Marina was built in 1939 as a swimming centre to replace the nearby Medina Baths. However, it was immediately requisitioned at the outbreak of the Second World War as a training facility and commissioned as HMS King Alfred. 22,500 officers from all over the empire were trained in the building including my great-uncle, Robert Millar. After the war it was reopened as a sports centre in August 1946 by Admiral Layton – and its new name stuck. There have been calls for a new leisure centre for many years, but the competition which Karis/ING’s Frank Gehry towers scheme won wasn’t held until 2003. Karis/ING saw off designs from Wilkininson Eyre and Richard Rogers with a tall and colourful design that simply wasn’t suited to the surrounding architecture. It has bothered me that there has been much personal criticism of the three men who were perhaps most heavily involved – Josh Arghiros (the boss of Karis), Ken Bodfish (the council leader who initiated the project) and even Frank Gehry himself, perhaps the greatest living architect. Bringing world-class architects to Brighton and Hove is good news and it’s a shame that the previous administration got its brief so wrong. I’m sure that its aims were honourable though. If local residents are to connect with local politicians, it is important for them to have a much bigger say in and, indeed, an opportunity to work on, what takes place locally. Consultation is vital too but it’s not enough – a referendum would lead to that all-important sea change, which is so badly needed.
